Banks still in the rehab group. Bit concerning for the young fella. Hope he gets right soon.

A few in the rehab group or doing run throughs. Dusty Graham Dow Ryan Lynch. Don’t think I’ve ever seen Lynch in better shape. Looks ripped.

Black jumpers:

Riewoldt, Prestia, Caddy, Kmac, Miller, Aarts, Cotch, Mansell, Ralphsmith, Edwards, Castagna, Balta, Bolton, Biggie, Broad, Baker.

Yellow jumpers:

Soldo, Short, Martyn, Grimes, Gibcus, Vlastuin, Tarrant, D.Rioli, M.Rioli, Stack, Ross, Pickett, Parker, Sonsie, RCD, Clarke Cumberland.

Looks to be a couple of ring-ins. Commentary just said they are VFL players.

Not playing:
Dusty, Lynch, Lambert, Dow, Ryan, Colina.

Presuming Banks and Graham aren't out there either as they have been in rehab.

No Brown either.

Sonsie has done some nice things, he's showing good awareness.
Cotchin, outstanding first qtr.
Prestia similar to cotchin.

Cotch (BOG) and Prestia looked refreshed. Along with Bolton are our starting 3 mids in the centre. Yellow mids (RCD, Ross & Martyn) were on top for the first 5 mins but the Black mids took control after that.

Good battle between Soldo and Nank in the ruck.

Of the newbies, Sonsie is showing a bit so far. Gibcus has taken a couple of good defensive marks.

The Yellows have no reliable tall targets (Jorgensen and Street (VFL)). They look up and won't go long. Try to run it into F50 and turn it over.

Another goal on transition from the Blacks. Goal to Prestia on the end of the chain.

Bolton snaps from the boundary. Misses.

Dan Rioli by himself 70 out for the yellows but no one was leading into the space in the corridor  :P.

Cotch and Prestia doing as they please.

Baker 3 goals and killing it in the forward half.

Nank had a good 2nd quarter too.

Yellow forward line is dysfunctional. No talls to rely on. So the ball is being turned over whenever they go forward.

Mansell playing well off HB.

Given the amount of rebound attacks Gibcus in the Yellow defence is doing well on Jack.

Bests:

Blacks: Baker, Cotch, Prestia, Bolton, Nank, Mansell, Broad, Caddy.

Yellows: Hard given it was a one-sided scoreline and their forward line and structure was non-existent. RCD, Sonsie, Gibcus, Soldo and Ross were arguably the Yellows better players.

It was a typical training run, nothing meant much.
But there were a few pleasing stand-outs - RCD impacted against the odds, Gibcus & Sonsie both showed a bit, Soldo had a run & looked ok, Baker was fantastic at times.  Biggy did well.
Downers - D.Rioli looked bored & couldn't be bothered, Stack iffy, MRJ went missing too often, George could've had 10 (but kicked 1), Grimes should never wear a visor cos it makes his nose look bigger (even without the Hamburglar mask).    ;D

FORGOTTEN MIDFIELDER RETURNS TO FORM IN TIGERS INTRA-CLUB

By Seb Mottram
SEN
19 Feb 2022

Dustin Martin sat out Richmond’s Saturday intra-club game, but multiple other midfielders showed their prowess in the competitive hit-out.

It’s understood Martin has an adductor niggle, with the club opting to be cautious with their Brownlow Medallist.

However, that opened the door for on-ballers Dion Prestia and Trent Cotchin to be most impressive at Punt Road.

Cotchin, 31, hasn’t been at his brilliant best in recent years, but Saturday’s form could suggest he’s ready to get back to one of the competition’s top-echelon without the weight of the captaincy.

Meanwhile, Prestia has suffered a tough run with injury to manage just 14 games across the last two seasons.

The 2019 best and fairest winner has undergone a full pre-season leading into 2022 and may also be primed to showcase his best football in the coming season.

“He looked good today, Dion … the more we can have him on the park, the better we are going to be. He is a great leader for us and it was a great start for him (on Saturday),” assistant coach Andrew McQualter said, via News Corp.

Other standouts for the Tigers included Liam Baker kicking four goals and new defensive duo Robbie Tarrant and Josh Gibcus plying their trade across the backline, impressing the coaching staff.

“What a good guy to learn off for Josh … Robbie is such an experienced player and we are rapt to have him,” McQualter said,

“We think they are going to form a good relationship for a good period of time.”

The club’s eyes now turn to next Saturday’s practice game against Geelong at GMHBA stadium.

They hope that Martin and Tom Lynch – who also missed Saturday’s scratch match – will be both available to take on the Cats.

“Dustin was pretty close to playing, (it) was a slight hip issue and we expect him to be fine next week,” McQualter added.

“’Lynchy’ … was pretty much at 100 per cent running. He probably could have played today. But it was not worth running the risk for an intra-club at this time of the year with those guys.

“Both look like they will be available next week. It will be a first-game (of the preseason) for them. Over the years we have always built our guys up, and it will be the same for them.”

The Age's report on our intra-club:

Richmond looked sharp in the first half of their intra-club, with the only downside being a leg injury to mid-season selection Matthew Parker, who limped off late in the game. McQualter said the former Saint would have scans on his foot to determine the extent of the injury.

Their new defenders, veteran Robbie Tarrant and first-round draft selection Josh Gibcus, impressed, with McQualter saying Gibcus would learn playing alongside the former Kangaroo. He played down the prospect of Gibcus making his debut in round one, saying it was too early to tell, although he has not put a foot wrong in his first pre-season.

“We think they [Tarrant and Gibcus] are going to hopefully form a really good relationship for a long period of time,” McQualter said.

Midfielder Dion Prestia was outstanding after a strong pre-season as he looks to have an injury-free season following a frustrating couple of years. He has played just 18 games in the past two seasons, although he was a key player in the 2020 premiership when he returned for the finals series.

McQualter said he did not want to curse the best-and-fairest winner who is a critical player in the Tigers’ line-up, but he agreed that his performance was a highlight.

“The more we can have him on the park, the better we can be,” McQualter said of Prestia.

Richmond are trialling premiership defender Noah Balta up forward after recruiting Tarrant. McQualter said the Tigers can see plenty of potential in the 22-year-old, who played inside the forward 50 early in his career before being forced back when Alex Rance retired.

Ivan Soldo also played after missing 2021 recovering from an ACL injury. McQualter described him as “the forgotten man”, with Soldo having played in back-to-back premierships in tandem with new co-captain Toby Nankervis.

Competition for spots will be on, with Riley Collier-Dawkins and Jack Ross impressive as they attempt to break into the Tigers’ strong midfield.

Sydney Stack looked fit, and despite giving away two 50-metre penalties he has not lost his class in tight.

Tyler Sonsie stakes claim for early season debut

He had an injury-interrupted 2021, but Tyler Sonsie could debut early for Richmond after a scintillating performance in its intra-club on Saturday morning.

The aggressive ball-winner was dominant for the ‘weaker’ yellow team in the engine room, taking on a midfield including Dion Prestia, Shai Bolton and Trent Cotchin and providing an enthralling contest.

Sonsie moved through traffic and fed outside runners, and also showed off his burst of acceleration that had recruiters labelling him a top-10 talent at the beginning of 2021.

The Pick 28 is a beautiful ball user on both sides of his body, able to weight the football in front of leading teammates as he did on a few occasions today.

Playing purely in centre bounces, it was a terrific showing for the 181-centimetre midfielder.

He eased his way into training pre-Christmas after ankle and knee injuries curtailed his draft year campaign, but has hit the ground running in the new year and is now ramping up his training loads to the point of Round 1 consideration.

Sonsie’s done his chances no harm with a terrific showing in the clubs’ first hit-out.

Gibcus’ composure turns heads

It was a line-ball decision between Josh Gibcus and Ben Hobbs at Pick 9 for the Tigers, and the club will be delighted with the first showing from their interceptor. Gibcus was a wall time and time again, often taking up assignments on Jack Riewoldt and proving a tricky opponent for the veteran.

On multiple occasions he led Riewoldt to the ball, as he did so often in the NAB League. Gibcus reads the play superbly, and combining that football nous with his acceleration and vertical leap gives him every opportunity to chop off attacking forays.

The biggest positive to come from the performance was his composure with ball in hand. Gibcus didn’t rush his disposal and picked out right decision. He was used as the outlet on switches, and bit off corridor kicks when they were available.

He wasn’t the most prolific defender in his junior years, but he could yet become an attacking weapon out of the back 50.

Noah Balta was trialled up forward and looked impressive which could offer Gibcus an opportunity to feature for the Tigers early in 2022 alongside new recruit Robbie Tarrant and stalwarts Dylan Grimes and Nick Vlastuin.

Is this the new small forward fleet?

The Tigers have had an embarrassment of riches in the small forward department over their premiership years with Daniel Rioli, Dan Butler, Jason Castagna and Jake Aarts.

Now, it looks as though another fleet is coming through for the 2022 season with Rioli looking to cement a spot down back.

Liam Baker, Shai Bolton and Castagna were prolific for their side all day. Bolton will inevitably spend time in the midfield with his creativity and flare a huge bonus for the Tigers’ engine room, but Baker may prove to be a revelation as a forward.

Spending the majority of his career in the backline and even trialled as a centre bounce midfielder, the fiery utility had a day out on Saturday kicking four goals.

He crumbed packs beautifully and made repeat efforts when the opposition had the ball. If nothing else, Baker will be able to keep his spot in the side with his forward pressure and elite tackling ability.

Who was playing on Baker?
Each of his 4 goals were on a different opponent.

Goal 1:
Playing midfield at the time on one of our VFL-listed players. Baker ran forward and got on the end of a transitional chain.

Goal 2:
Floss gave 50 away on the wing to Baker (who didn't score) before Floss was caught well behind Baker on the lead from transitional play. The latter was something no defender could do anything about to be fair.

Goal 3:
Short wasn't tight enough on Baker at a forward stoppage and allowed Baker space to run and get corridor/goal side for Nank's perfect tap.

Goal 4:
Dan Rioli ran off to receive the ball but he turned over his kick at HB which left Baker free inside F50 to get on the end of the interception and mark and goal.

TRAINING NOTES: PRESTIA PRIMED TO HELP TIGERS RELAUNCH

WHO WERE THE STANDOUTS?

If Dion Prestia’s body holds together, it will be a massive win for the Tigers as they look towards pushing for the higher reaches of the ladder again.

Prestia managed only nine games last season, but track watchers have been buoyant about his preseason to date and he looks set to regain his mantle as one of the club’s most important players.

He was outstanding in the match simulation on Saturday morning, running out of the middle at full steam and distributing well.

At stages of the intra-club, Prestia combined well with Trent Cotchin, Shane Edwards and Shai Bolton, and it shows that the Tigers’ midfield will still have plenty of depth through it when Jack Graham and others return.

Liam Baker kicked four goals for his side and was lively throughout the session. He just keeps adding strings to his bow.

Bolton was good early, Riley Collier-Dawkins kicked two early goals, and the new skipper Toby Nankervis kicked two goals playing in the ruck against Ivan Soldo and also drifting forward on occasions.

McQualter praised the work of Collier-Dawkins and Jack Ross for the work they had put in during the preseason and said the competition for spots was strong.

RECRUIT/DRAFT WATCH

The Tigers have been super impressed with the way the club’s pick 9 Josh Gibcus has settled into Punt Road.

It may be too early to suggest he could be a Round 1 bolter, but he showed enough working alongside Tarrant in the intra-club to suggest he can be a serious player in the future.

He looks good overhead and has a solid game sense, with Jack Riewoldt saying recently he has been particularly taken with his talent and work ethic.

He was matched against Riewoldt on Saturday, and learnt plenty of lessons.

Another draftee Samuel Banks kicked two nice goals in the game :huh3 and looks a competitive player while Tyler Sonsie made a few nice interceptions.

Nup. Banks has been in rehab for a number of weeks. That HeraldSun 'journo' is an idiot. They must have thought Caddy was Banks :stupid  :lol.

Anyone know where Tom Brown was?
Not sure why Brown didn't play, pmac. He was training fine with the main group last week. If he picked up a niggle it must have been right at the end of the week. I was actually looking forward to seeing how he would've gone in the intra-club. So it was disappointing to not see him out there on Saturday.
