West Coast v Richmond at Mineral Resources Park, 4.10pm AWST

When playing on bigger grounds, a game style is starting to emerge for West Coast. Focusing on speed, run and carry, emptying out the forward line to get the ball out the front into space. Playing at home again allows them a chance to find that style of play again, albeit in stifling hot conditions. The work rate of Richmond’s wings will be really important in ensuring the Eagles don’t get the ball out to the open side at will.

The midfield battle will be an interesting one. Richmond has relied heavily on Monique Conti to do the bulk of work around the ball, although Ellie McKenzie’s return has provided some relief. The Eagles, however, boast an impressive on-ball brigade, including captain Emma Swanson, Dana Hooker and Bella Lewis. Key for West Coast will be capitalising on the midfield dominance they often have, and turning that into scoreboard pressure.

Tip: Richmond is fighting hard despite key players missing, but this is a chance for West Coast to register a second win for the season. Eagles by two points.

Yellow and BACK: Tigers snag second win of the season

RICHMOND has secured its second win of the season in style, defeating West Coast by 23 points in a high-scoring, free-flowing affair at Mineral Resources Park on Saturday afternoon.

By Nathan Schmook
AFL Media
19 February 2022

RICHMOND'S midfield stars put on a first-half masterclass against West Coast as the Tigers snapped a five-game losing streak with a 23-point win in the Perth heat on Saturday.

In her third game back from a calf injury, Ellie McKenzie elevated to a new level early to set up the 10.8 (68) to 7.3 (45) win in a performance that helped the Tigers' rediscover a winning formula.

And experienced teammate Monique Conti finished the job as the Tigers kicked their biggest score for the season in an entertaining and high-scoring clash.

Conti (24 disposals and five clearances) and McKenzie (18 and three), combined for 26 contested possessions and 11 inside 50s, kickstarting an attacking game style that stunned the Eagles early.

Winless since the opening round of the season, there was much else for the Tigers to celebrate, with Tayla Stahl (three goals) giving them another option in attack and Katie Brennan (two goals) in great touch in stifling 34C conditions.

Meg Macdonald capped her rise as a replacement player from the VFLW to the top level, kicking her first AFLW goal from a set shot in the third quarter as the Tigers put the match beyond doubt.

Ambushed early, the Eagles recovered to make the match somewhat competitive for three quarters but were never able to bridge the gap on the scoreboard in a meaningful way.

When former Giant Aimee Schmidt gathered and snapped on her right foot deep in the fourth quarter, the Eagles surpassed their highest score of the season but remain with just the one win for the season.

Seymour was very good all game. Conti was excellent again.

McKenzie is all class and if we can make the finals she will be cherry ripe for some Dusty style heroics.

Some very good signs as we are still without two defenders and our key forward.

Up forward some good work by Brennan sometimes double or triple teamed could of ended the game with 4 but was a bit off with her finishing.
Stahl was lucky today to kick three I’m not her biggest fan but maybe she should forever ditch the headgear.
I liked the look of Lynch today, she competes hard which I really like but she needs to get involved a lot more because I think she’s got something.
Dempsey was a solid contributor all game.
Thought Sansonetti played her best game that I’ve seen her play. Some good things from Lavey and Kiely. D’arcy wasn’t as good as she was last week but is a hard contributor.

I’m not sold on Bernardi but she’s still a better option than Jacques.

Poppy Kelly has no skill nor has she got a football brain. Her hitouts are mostly useless unless your an opposition player in your forward fifty in front of goal she will most probably hit it to you  :banghead
Her only value is giving Seymour some options around the ground.
We really need to find a better option to help Seymour.
Could we try Makur-Chuot as Ruck option?

We should beat both Geelong and GWS in the next two games.

Tigers snap losing run with win over Eagles

By Ronny Lerner and Roy Ward
The Age
February 29, 2022

A first-quarter blast has helped Richmond emphatically snap their five-game AFLW losing streak with a 23-point win against West Coast in an entertaining contest in Perth on Saturday evening.

After winning the season opener convincingly against St Kilda by 38 points, the Tigers’ finals hopes took a big hit with consecutive losses to Melbourne, Fremantle, Gold Coast, the Western Bulldogs and North Melbourne.

But Ryan Ferguson’s team managed to stop the rot against the Eagles.

Richmond began in dominant fashion, booting the first four goals of the game, including two in four minutes from Tayla Stahl, to take a commanding 26-point lead at quarter-time after holding the Eagles scoreless in the opening term. It would prove to be the decisive quarter of the game.

In the end, the Tigers dominated the territory battle with 15 more inside 50s (40-25) and also enjoyed comfortable advantages in disposals (215-182), contested possessions (107-93), clearances (30-22) and scoring shots (18-10).

Former No.1 pick Ellie McKenzie was sensational for the Tigers, setting up the win in the first half and finishing with 18 touches (10 contested) and a goal, while her partner in crime Monique Conti was also influential with 24 disposals (16 contested), nine tackles, five clearances and a major. Stahl and captain Katie Brennan (15 disposals) booted five goals between them.

Emma Swanson and Dana Hooker were once again the shining lights for the Eagles with a combined 46 touches (24 contested) and 11 clearances. Swanson also booted two goals and laid seven tackles, while Aimee Schmidt snagged three majors.

The shell-shocked hosts came out in better shape after the first change, thanks to goals from captain Swanson and Schmidt, but they were cancelled out by star Richmond duo Conti and McKenzie.

By the time Brennan booted her second goal early in the third term, Richmond’s lead had ballooned to 35 points, and from there, the Eagles struggled to make significant inroads, despite the best efforts of Swanson and Hooker.

A strong final quarter from West Coast, in which Schmidt kicked two of her three goals, added respectability to the scoreboard from an Eagles point of view.

RICHMOND’S NEED FOR SPEED
Richmond’s speed was perhaps best illustrated late in the first quarter when a blistering chain of possessions featuring Conti, McKenzie, Tessa Lavey, Emelia Yassir and Brennan finished up with Christina Bernardi, who kicked the easy goal from the goal square to put the Tigers 26 points to the good.

CONTI ALL CLASS
Early in the second quarter Conti showed her considerable class when she received the handball from Maddy Brancatisano in the forward line, sidestepped West Coast’s Courtney Guard and dobbed a beauty from the pocket to swiftly restore her side’s four-goal advantage shortly after Swanson kicked West Coast’s first major.

STAHL THE PICKPOCKET
West Coast’s fate was sealed early in the final quarter when Niamh Kelly committed a critical error deep in defence by kicking it backwards to Ashton Hill. Stahl was wise to the plan and charged towards the ball before taking a courageous chest mark backing back with the flight while crashing into Hill. Stahl completed the brilliant play by slotting her third major from 15 metres out to put Richmond up by 36 points.

RICHMOND 4.2 6.5 8.7 10.8 (68)
WEST COAST 0.0 2.2 4.2 7.3 (45)

GOALS
Richmond: Stahl 3, Brennan 2, Bernardi, Conti, McKenzie, Macdonald, Makur Chuot.
West Coast: Schmidt 3, Swanson 2, Bullas, Gibson.

BEST

West Coast: Swanson, Hooker, Schmidt, Gooch.

"They've been brilliant. We've been so confident in what we've been doing and we're still so confident that we're improving. We've been thrown lots of different challenges and we’ve been really united. The ability to absorb some losses and stick the course and get some reward, it's important."

I have no doubt McKenzie will be the best player in the league if not next year the year after.

I am hoping the heat and the fast start resulted in the tired legs in the last quarter.

Ellie Mckenzie is still getting her match fitness back from her injury, badly faded out in the second half.

Good person aside Chout is useless, I thought she just started with us as a project player but cant believe she played with Freo five years ago.

Stahl kicking 3 goals from four possies totally over shadowed her lack of involvement in the match.
