The AFL confirms Devonport Oval will host Hawthorn vs. Richmond in a tribute match
In December last year, the league announced the Hawthorn and Richmond football clubs would participate in a tribute match for the families and communities of Hillcrest Primary School following the tragic accident in Devonport.
Further initiatives surrounding the tribute match include:
• AFL players from the Hawthorn, Richmond and North Melbourne Football Clubs will run football clinics and engage with the local community on Friday, March 4.
• Post-match at Devonport Oval will see a special music act by local Tasmanian artist Luca Brasi, followed by interviews with Hawthorn and Richmond players and other special guests.
• Healing for Hillcrest: Supporting the Hillcrest Primary School Community fundraising dinner will be held at Devonport’s paranaple Arts Centre on the Saturday evening following the match. Club Presidents, CEOs, footballers, and special guests including prominent Tasmanians will be in attendance at the dinner with items from AFL Clubs and other sporting memorabilia to be auctioned.
• All funds raised from the tribute match and activity surrounding the game will go directly to the Hillcrest Community Public Fund.
AFL Chief Executive Officer Gillon McLachlan said it was important for the game to play a role in supporting those impacted in the Tasmanian community.
"On behalf of the AFL, our thoughts are to those impacted by the terrible accident, including the families, first responders, the school community, and the close-knit North-West community of Tasmania,” Mr McLachlan said.
"Together with the Hawthorn, Richmond and North Melbourne football clubs, we continue to work closely with the Devonport Council and the Tasmanian Government to best support the local community.
"A fundraiser and a game of football cannot change what has happened, but it is one way for our game to wrap our arms around the North-West community and show our support."
Richmond CEO Brendon Gale said:
"We were all deeply saddened by the tragic events at Hillcrest Primary School. As a Club with deep connections to Tasmania, we look forward to playing in a game that we hope can in some small way support the local Devonport community."
Hawthorn President Jeff Kennett said:
“The events that occurred in Devonport last December were truly heart-breaking.
“The club is honoured to play a role in helping re-build this community, and we hope this game provides the Tasmanian people with some light and joy after what has been a challenging time for the state.
“Hawthorn has a long-standing connection to Tasmania, and we will continue to assist and offer our support to its community in any capacity possible.”
North Melbourne Kangaroos CEO Ben Amarfio said:
“The Hillcrest Primary School community have remained in our thoughts since that tragic day in December.
“We’ve had a decade-long relationship with Tasmania. Some of our senior staff and twelve players across our men’s and women’s teams are from Tassie, so it’s an extra special place for us. We are honoured to be involved in this initiative.
“While we can’t heal the pain, we hope to offer some support, a little respite and hopefully put some smiles on the faces of those affected.”
Tasmanian Premier Peter Gutwein said:
“The Tasmanian Government is very pleased to be working with the AFL and the Hawthorn and Richmond football clubs on hosting this important tribute match and associated activities in Devonport in early March.
“Footy is a game that brings communities together and I commend the clubs and the AFL for this initiative which will help with the community recovery process from the heartbreaking Hillcrest tragedy late last year.”
Devonport Mayor Annette Rockliff said the Healing for Hillcrest AFL match would be a good opportunity for the community to come together to continue to support those still reeling from the December tragedy. Cr Rockliff said Devonport City Council was appreciative of the efforts by all involved in creating a special event that will see all funds raised help to care for the Hillcrest community, through the Hillcrest Community Public Fund.
“So much generosity has come from all corners of the globe over the past two months and this AFL match is another opportunity for that support to continue to help our community heal,” Cr Rockliff said.
“Council has been working with organisers to ensure Devonport Oval is match-ready as the city welcomes the return of AFL. We’ve been told the ground is perfect for AFL playing requirements and it’s exciting for Devonport to host these two AFL powerhouse clubs.
“I’m sure this game will generate a great deal of interest and excitement as both teams have very passionate supporters in Tasmania and strong connections to the North-West region.”
Hillcrest Community Public Fund | Devonport City Council
The tragedy that occurred at Hillcrest Primary School in Devonport is truly heartbreaking. Funds raised from the Healing for Hillcrest event will help deliver a series of initiatives in support of the Hillcrest Primary School Community and will be administered through the Hillcrest Community Public Fund that has been set up specifically to provide ongoing care for the community.
For supporters wishing to contribute to the Fund, the AFL together with the Hawthorn, Richmond and North Melbourne Football Clubs, will communicate further details closer to the match. Read more here (https://www.devonport.tas.gov.au/hillcrest-community-public-fund-launched/).

RICHMOND USING HAWTHORN MATCH AS “DRESS REHEARSAL” FOR CARLTON OPENER
By Brahden O'Connell
SEN
Richmond's 18-point practice match win over Geelong last Saturday saw many senior Tigers in action and the expectation is that it will be much of the same this weekend.
The Tigers will tune up for their Round 1 clash with Carlton by taking on Hawthorn in Devonport on Saturday.
With newly-appointed co-captain Dylan Grimes entering the line-up, GM of Football Performance Tim Livingstone revealed that the AAMI Community Series meeting with the Hawks will be a likely preview of the 22 that will suit up for the Blues in a fortnight.
“It is a dress rehearsal this week as far as we’re concerned,” he said on Sportsday.
“It’s your last chance before round one to get your crew playing together.
“You’ll get a fair indication of what the round one team will look like come Saturday.”
The off-season retirements of three-time premiership defenders Bachar Houli and David Astbury left Richmond with two gaping holes in their back six coming off last season’s disappointing campaign.
The acquisition of North Melbourne’s Robbie Tarrant was the club’s solution to the Astbury void, but Houli’s spot on the half-back stuff will be covered up by someone already in-house.
Livingstone believes Daniel Rioli - who struggled to find form as a forward in recent years - is one of the leading candidates to step into the rebounding role.
“In terms of Bachar, it’s hard to replace anyone of that ability,” he added.
“We’re really excited by Daniel Rioli’s shift down back last year and what he was able to produce.
“We think his game can go to another level.”
Among the other candidates are youngsters Hugo Ralphsmith and Rhyan Mansell, who have both turned heads in pre-season.
“Hugo Ralphsmith played some terrific footy on Saturday (against Geelong),” Livingstone said.
“Rhyan Mansell has been good in his first year.
“So we’ve got some options there off half-back and some guys that are playing good footy.”

-
Would have liked Miller in that side.
-
Same here georgie. I would've thought Miller is ahead of Biggie at this stage.
Rapt to see Brown named but really surprise Maurice jnr is there. As much as Livingstone said this would be a dress rehearsal for round 1, we must be wanting to give some of the young cubs experience in travelling interstate.
No RCD despite Burge saying he was right for selection. Either we are just being overcautious due to his ribs or he's playing VFL tomorrow.
Those missing:
Injured: Floss, Lambert, Graham, Banks.
VFL: Caddy, RCD, Dow, Mansell, Cumberland, Sonsie, Clarke & Stack.

I marvel at courage of 12 yo Declean Brown and his family. He survived the Devonport jumping castle tragedy ..but was in a coma for a week with fractured hip, spine, neck ,dislocated pelvis. He met his Tiger heroes at a footy clinic prior to tomorrow’s tribute match.

-
I know caddy isn’t exactly considered best 22 anymore but not being able to crack a squad of 26 is surprising.
-
Sun out in Devonport.
Kate Ceberano singing 'Brave'.
Coverage on Kayo.
-
Game started.
-
What was that kick Dan?
-
Great mark by Bolts on the wing. To Sheds at HF who chips to Kmac on an angle 35 out. Centres it. Hawks clear temporarily.
Hawk throw. Dusty finds Balta 55 out. Big bomb for a point.
1 - 0
-
Wasting F50 chances.
Not sure why Hugo would pass to Baker playing behind the taller Sicily.
-
Jack kicks the first.
Grabs the jumper.
Rich 1.2-8
Haw 0.1-1
-
And they wonder why we complain about how we get treated by the umps ::).
A clear whack across the earhole and no free! :banghead.
-
Throw-in deep F50. Baker crumbing goal :gotigers
Rich 2.2-14
Haw 0.1-1
-
Bolton long. Soldo almost takes a great mark in the goalsquare. Baker front and square soccers the goal :gotigers.
Rich 3.2-20
Haw 0.1-1
-
Cotch intercept. Dusty from 55 to the hot spot. Soldo almost the speckie. Jack crumbs but snaps a point.
We get it back from the kick-in. Dusty misses too.
22 - 1
-
Good use of the body by Gibcus at HB. We get it forward. Dan Rioli to Balta 55 out. Noah nails the long shot :gotigers.
Rich 4.4-28
Haw 0.1-1
-
Training drill so far.
Out of the middle. Prestia hands to Bolts. Grubbers one inside 50. Lynch hands to Bakes to George in the goalsquare = goal! :gotigers
Rich 5.4-34
Haw 0.1-1
-
Ill-disciplined 50 (Nank/Prestia knocking the ball out of the hands after a free).
Then another free to Hawthorn 10m out.
Stupid goal to give away. Only way the Hawks looked like scoring.
34 - 7
-
We get it back straight away.
Kmac outside 50 by the boundary in board towards Balta 40. Beats his opponent at ground level, gathers and goals :gotigers.
Rich 6.4-40
Haw 1.1-7
-
Lynch marks 45 out but didn't know what option to take. Just kick the goal Tom.
We get it back and Bakes finds Sheds 25 out. Goal! :gotigers
Rich 7.4-46
Haw 1.1-7
-
Free to the Hawks in the centre. Then they get a contested mark and goal with 12 secs to go :banghead.
Quarter time
Richmond 7.4-46
Hawthorn 2.1-13
Goals: Balta 2, Baker 2, Riewoldt, Edwards, Castagna.
-
Hawks minus Mitchell & O'Meara = wooden spoon.
We're dominating the game across the park. Tarrant and Gibcus solid down back. Ball movement slick on transition. Bolts on fire. Winning clearances. Finding targets inside F50. 3 tall forward line working. Balta has 2 already.
Just need to cut out the dumb stuff which has gifted them their two goals against the run of play.
-
Another ill-disciplined free (by Lynch off the ball) causes a reversal.
-
Grimes off being looked at by a trainer :-\.
Bolts spins on the wing and hits Baker. Off to Jack. To Lynch in the pocket who takes a good mark against Sicily. Misses.
47 - 15
-
Sloppy handpass Broad when we were out. Killed the momentum.
Around the perimeter to Kmac who chip short to George 40 out. Across the face. Throw-in.
Dusty to Cotch. Too cute Trent. Just take the set shot.
-
Fantastic transition from defence to inside 50. Jack great goal from the boundary :gotigers.
Much better Tiges.
Rich 8.5-53
Haw 2.3-15
-
Grimes landed awkwardly flying for a mark earlier. They're checking his foot.
-
Dumb 50 again. Jack you know the new rules. Actually the ump was lenient. Allowed Jack to have two goes pleading before pinging him for the third.
-
Another dumb 50. Mouthing off again (not sure who - Lynch?)
Gibcus almost the speckie in defence. Hawks crumb a goal.
53 - 22
All their goals have come from dumb stuff by us.
-
Short hits up Balta 30 out but it's a free for a block off the ball.
FFS Tiges! Another costly un-disciplined free again :banghead.
-
Grimes back on. All good.
-
Baker in board to Short. Bombs it long. Falls to Sheds out the back of the pack and he slides it through for the goal :gotigers
Rich 9.5-59
Haw 3.5-23
Prestia off after getting crunched twice. Hand/Wrist? :(.
-
Soldo blocked out of the contest 10m out. Goal! :gotigers
Rich 10.5-65
Haw 3.5-23
-
Repeat of the last 15 secs of the first qtr. Give them a goal with 10 secs to play :banghead.
-
Fantastic transition from defence to inside 50. Jack great goal from the boundary :gotigers.
Much better Tiges.
Rich 8.5-53
Haw 2.3-15
I really hope people paid close attention to McIntosh in that play. The gut running, transition etc. That is his role, he plays it perfectly week after week, not just about possessions for KMac
-
Half-time
Richmond 7.4 10.5-65
Hawthorn 2.1 4.5-29
Goals: Balta 2, Baker 2, Riewoldt 2, Edwards 2, Castagna, Soldo.
Frustrating quarter. Lost focus once we got out to a big lead at 1/4 time. Dimma will be ticked off the ill-disciplined frees and 50s given away mostly by our senior players. Plenty of nappy changes coming up.
The main issue is if Prestia is injured (hand/wrist ?). The result doesn't matter but key injuries do :-\.
-
We need hawthorn to be better than this. We need to have pick 18 and pick 19 in the draft. We need Norf to finish last.
-
Speaking of frustrating, Ross is working hard to win his share of the footy across the ground but his foot disposal lets him down too often.
On the positive side, Tarrant is now jelling with our defence. That was a great thumping spoil back into the centre square for a teammate to run onto. Gibcus solid which is all you can ask for a first yearer.
Bakes very good after a quiet game last week.
I really hope people paid close attention to McIntosh in that play. The gut running, transition etc. That is his role, he plays it perfectly week after week, not just about possessions for KMac
Kmac is playing well. He ran hard into space just before that goal too but Broad handballed to his bootlaces and stuffed up the transition.
-
A hospital pass by Ross by Lynch :help.
Lynch still good enough to take the mark. Goal :gotigers.
Rich 11.5-71
Haw 4.5-29
-
Prestia on after half-time ... phew!
-
Soldo now off. Ankle or knee. Wasn't much in the contest. Hope it isn't the latter :-\.
Edit: Replay shows it's an ankle.
-
Balta kicks his 3rd :gotigers.
Rich 12.5-77
Haw 4.5-29
-
Id have Dow before Ross in the team.
-
Hows our defensive structure this werk?
-
Soldo in the rooms getting his ankle restrapped. So hoping that is good news if we are trying to get him back on the ground.
-
Hows our defensive structure this werk?
Much better in that we're not getting split open on defensive transition like we did last week against Geelong. Tarrant jelling well with the rest of our backline now. However, Hawthorn aren't much chop so we're playing inferior opposition who are easier to defend against.
-
Goal to Jack :gotigers.
Rich 13.5-83
Haw 4.6-30
-
Broad needs to practice his handpasses to Kmac. At his feet again. Kmac then fumbles. Gifts Hawthorn a goal.
83 - 37
-
Soldo back on the ground .... Phew!
-
Poor defensive pass by the Hawks. Bakes flies. Lynch gathers the crumb and chips to Jack 35 out on the boundary. Misses.
84 - 37
-
Did Biggie just bump into Tarrant so he could change direction? :lol
-
George poster.
85 - 38
1 min to go in Q3
-
Almost gave them a third goal in the last 30 secs of a quarter :facepalm. Lucky they missed.
3/4 time
Richmond 7.4 10.5 13.7-85
Hawthorn 2.1 4.5 5.9-39
Goals: Balta 3, Riewoldt 3, Baker 2, Edwards 2, Lynch, Castagna, Soldo.
-
Any word on Grimes?
-
George set shot from the pocket ends up a centred kick :P. Rushed through.
86 - 41
-
Any word on Grimes?
He came back on but I haven't noticed him since.
-
Junk time.
Kmac ping is touched on the line.
Soldo misses running into goal 15 out.
88 - 42
-
Maurice jnr and Will Martyn on for their first runs.
-
Hello fatigue. Sloppy by foot this qtr.
-
Crowd: 8412
Tarrant hopefully just winded.
Goal to the Hawks.
88 - 50
-
Speaking of frustrating, Ross is working hard to win his share of the footy across the ground but his foot disposal lets him down too often.

Kmac is playing well. He ran hard into space just before that goal too but Broad handballed to his bootlaces and stuffed up the transition.
Ross biggest issue waste the footy.
-
Ross long to the hot spot. Lynch had 3 on him and they blocked him. Free kick 20m out. Goal! :gotigers
Rich 14.10-94
Haw 6.15-51
-
Cotch and few others on the bench. Cue in the rack.
Dion's handpass intercepted. Goal to Hawthorn.
94 - 57
-
Another to the Hawks.
94 - 63
Alastair Lynch reckoned Hugo got a touch but they don't review goals in the preseason.
-
Our F50 entries this qtr have just been long bombs. Ball coming out too easily.
And we make it the complete set by giving Hawthorn a set shot inside the last minute of each quarter.
94 - 69
-
Siren. Won by 25 pts.
-
Final Score
Richmond 7.4 10.5 13.7 14.10-94
Hawthorn 2.1 4.5 5.9 9.15-69
Goals: Balta 3, Riewoldt 3, Lynch 2, Baker 2, Edwards 2, Castagna, Soldo.
Touchwood we got through without any injuries :pray.
-
Watched the game. Honestly very worried about us after today. Very ordinary after quarter time, hope it's just because it's a pre season game.
Daniel Rioli kicking out of defence was horrendous.
-
It's always been hard to tell with us as we've never been a team even in our premiership years that goes out to smash the opposition on the scoreboard. Once we gain a decent lead we often just go through the motions and only lift our intensity when we need to.
Our first quarter was dominant and high intensity aside from a couple of dumb frees + a 50.
2nd quarter was ill-disciplined.
3rd quarter was meh and sloppy forward of centre.
4th quarter we put the cue in the rack and threw on some of the cubs - Biggie, Maurice, Martyn.
The way we were desperate to get Soldo re-strapped and back on suggests we were focussing more on getting miles into the legs. In the 2nd half there was a lot of circle work with just long bombs into F50. We didn't try to control and maintain possession or lower the eyes.
-
Stats may say otherwise but it looked like they smashed us in the contest...also looks like we're still not wrapping up the ball in tackles and allowing opposition players to get rid of it ..even with two & three blokes on them....mind you the umps quite often seemed to be giving them a fair bit of time to do so... :banghead

Tigers tune up in style, Hawks draftee locks in R1 berth
By Brandon Cohen
AAP

HAWTHORN 2.1 4.5 5.9 9.15 (69)
RICHMOND 7.4 10.5 13.7 14.10 (94)
GOALS
Hawthorn: Lewis 2, McEvoy, Gunston, Breust, Wingard, Phillips, MacDonald, Koschitzke
Richmond: Balta 3, Riewoldt 3, Lynch 2, Baker 2, Edwards 2, Castagna, Soldo
BEST
Hawthorn: Ward, Worpel, Phillips, Nash, Newcombe
Richmond: Short, Cotchin, Baker, Balta, Martin, McIntosh
INJURIES
Hawthorn: Nil
Richmond: Nil
Reports: Nil
Crowd: 8,412 at Devonport Oval
----------------------------------------------------
HAWTHORN draftee Josh Ward appears to have sewn up a spot for round one after a superb performance in a 25-point loss to Richmond in the AAMI Community Series.
Taken with pick No.7 in last year's NAB AFL Draft, Ward was clearly his team's best player with 29 disposals, four marks and six clearances in a mature showing through the middle.
Despite his efforts, the experienced Tigers were far too strong, running out 14.10 (94) to 9.15 (69) winners in the 'Healing for Hillcrest' tribute match at Devonport Oval.
Richmond made a blistering start to the game, booting seven goals in the opening term to lead by 33 points at the first change.
With Noah Balta and Jack Riewoldt (three goals each) in top gear, the Tigers extended that margin to 46 points at three-quarter time before the Hawks fought back with four goals to one in the final term to reduce the gap.
Balta, whose 2021 was derailed by an ankle injury, appears set to be pushed forward by Richmond this season from his usual spot in defence.
The 22-year-old slotted two goals in the opening quarter and finished with seven marks, two of them contested.
"His ability to compete, bring the ball to ground, bring our crumbers into play was really strong," Richmond assistant coach Adam Kingsley said.
"Obviously he's made an AFL name for himself as a backman.
"But we feel we can stretch an opposition with the three keys, Jack (Riewoldt), Tom (Lynch) and Noah. His aerial stuff is really important.
"I'd imagine he's locked in for a start (in round one) and I'm presuming that's as a forward. But we'll discuss that as the week ... wears on."
Richmond's Ivan Soldo sent a scare through his camp when the ruckman came off limping after twisting his ankle in a third-quarter contest.
He had it heavily strapped but returned to the field not long afterwards.
Teammate Dion Prestia spent time off the field with ice on his hand after a collision but also returned to the paddock, while Tigers co-captain Dylan Grimes appeared to cop a knock but also returned.
Hobart-born Jack Riewoldt finished with three goals in front of a sold-out crowd of 8412.
The match acted as a fundraiser for the families affected by December's Hillcrest Primary School jumping castle tragedy in which six students were killed and three others badly injured.
Fantasy watch
As coaches are on the hunt for the most profitable cash cows, maybe it's time to lock in Josh Ward (MID, $278,000). Hawthorn's first-round draftee averaged 108 Fantasy points in the NAB League and showed he could do it on the big stage, spending bulk midfield minutes in the absence of Tom Mitchell and Jaeger O'Meara. Ward scored 91 from 29 disposals, of which 19 were contested possessions. Richmond's top scorer was Jayden Short (DEF, $783,000) with 126. Is he a pre-season specialist? Last week he racked up 133 points in the practice match and in last year's AAMI Community Series game, the 26-year-old was the best performer for the entire series with 171. Hugo Ralphsmith (MID/FWD, $258,000) has a Fantasy-friendly role playing behind the ball. The defender took a game-high 10 marks to help him to 86 points, a lot higher than his breakeven of 31.

Richmond's ability to score off turnovers was the difference in the end with the Tigers outscoring Hawthorn 9.6 (60) to 3.8 (26) from the source.

Watched the game. Honestly very worried about us after today. Very ordinary after quarter time, hope it's just because it's a pre season game.
Daniel Rioli kicking out of defence was horrendous.
I agree with Rioli. I would’ve had Mansell ahead of him from what I saw in our practice game but that’s all I’ve seen. Just think he wants it more and Rioli looks as though he’s not interested. Obviously Rioli has the tricks and x-factor and it’s probably just a perception of mine but that’s the feeling I got watching.

Richmond tune-up for season in style as Tigers, Hawks support Devonport community
Peter Ryan
The Age
March 6, 2022
RICHMOND 7.4 10.5 13.7 14.10 (94) d. HAWTHORN 2.1 4.5 5.9 9.15 (69)
The Tigers showed they will be a premiership contender once again after they outclassed Hawthorn by 25 points in the Hillcrest Primary Tribute match in Devonport played to support a community reeling from the death of six primary school students in a jumping castle tragedy last December.
Richmond raced out of the starter’s gate with the first five goals while Hawthorn mentally prepared themselves for a long year more focused on development than wins.
Although the result was decided early, there was plenty for both sides to get out of the day as they tune up for round one with Richmond to face Carlton and the Hawks playing North Melbourne.
Noah Balta played his best game forward for the pre-season kicking three goals to be the game’s dominant forward while the Tigers dominated centre clearances through Dustin Martin - who had 10 disposals in the first quarter - and former skipper Trent Cotchin. Toby Nankervis and Ivan Soldo exploited Ned Reeves’ inexperience in the ruck. They improved when Max Lynch played in the ruck late.
The Hawks’ pressure was not what it needed to be as the Tigers moved the ball too easily from one end of the ground to the other in the first half, with their new-look defence looking good as Hugo Ralphsmith continued to press his claims to play round one. Josh Gibcus is set to play, although he was quiet.
On the bright side for the Hawks was the performance of midfielder Josh Ward, who took advantage of the absence of Tom Mitchell (groin soreness) and Jaeger O’Meara (hamstring tightness) to play in the middle. Chosen with pick No.7, Ward won the ball courageously and used it well to give Hawks supporters their player to watch in 2022.
Connor MacDonald was quieter, but he kicked goal while Finn Maginness is ready to take another step as a defender.
“We’re looking to find our best mix. Will we have that perfect mix for round one? Probably not,” Hawks coach Sam Mitchell said. “We are still going to be evolving.”
The Tigers will be without Kane Lambert for round one while Jack Graham is in doubt as Richmond chase a fourth premiership in six seasons. It’s essential Mitchell and O’Meara return to the midfield for the Hawks in round one. Tigers assistant coach Adam Kingsley said they expected Nick Vlastuin to play in round one.
The Tigers took the foot off the pedal late, allowing Hawthorn to build respect on the scoreboard. Hawthorn’s pressure around the ball and willingness to use the corridor showed that Richmond had a few things to tidy up before the season opener.
“We’re feeling pretty good about ourselves at the moment but watching Carlton’s game on Thursday night, they were terrific, and we’re expecting a tough game. They look like they have improved and gone another step,” Kingsley said.
Optimism surrounds Tasmania’s bid
Premier Peter Gutwein told Fox Footy he was optimistic the AFL would grant the state a licence to field a standalone team in Tasmania saying “the opportunity had never been better” as the building blocks were all in place. The bid received a boost this week with plans for a stadium in Hobart released. Club presidents will vote on the issue in the middle of the year. When asked about the possibility of club bosses voting for expansions, Richmond president Peggy O’Neal said: “Where there is a will there is a way.”
Umpire respect
Jack Riewoldt, who plays the game with skill and passion, gave away his second 50-metre penalty for disputing an umpire’s decision in successive weeks. The rule is reasonable as carrying on after a decision adds little to the game but affects the respect shown to umpires at community level. However, it is sure to impact more heavily on players such as Riewoldt, who are known to gesticulate and become emotional when a free kick is paid against them.
Community spirit
The AFL arrived in town to make a contribution that respected the needs of the community, with Richmond’s Riewoldt leading a group of players from the Tigers, Hawthorn and North Melbourne in a school clinic that was low-key but significant. The league also helped raise money for the Hillcrest Community Public Fund with 8412 supporters attending the match.
Sore spots
The Tigers’ new co-captain Dylan Grimes missed the practice match against Geelong with COVID-19 and did not play in the last quarter after he appeared to hurt his thumb in a marking contest late in the second quarter. It may have been just a precautionary measure but Dion Prestia (hand) and Soldo (ankle) returned to the field after knocks. Gibcus copped a blow to the face late in the game.
RICHMOND 7.4 10.5 13.7 14.10 (94)
HAWTHORN 2.1 4.5 5.9 9.15 (69)

Watched the game. Honestly very worried about us after today. Very ordinary after quarter time, hope it's just because it's a pre season game.
Daniel Rioli kicking out of defence was horrendous.
I agree also. It was only Hawthorn who won"t make the 8, they were also without their two most productive mids as well. If i said we won't make the 8 most people will howl me down.We lost clearances again and i/50 was pretty even.
Geez Jayden Short our biggest possesion getter which is nothing new yet heres people talking him up. I thought it was just another Short game there is not a lot of substance despite the fact people go crazy over the crazy metres gained stat and ke stats.
Jack Ross had a good game numbers wise but geez he is ineffective not a lot comes from his involvement in the game.
Castagna and his skills remain laughable what the hell are we doing playing him. Aarts i thought had a go all game but cmon he is not an answer and not the way fwd. The way fwd is to find a classy goal kicking fwd and find a mid who can have an impact like our aging mids have in the past.
Rioli well it seems no one at Richmond wants to criticise him. no way he should be getting a game in front of others. Some club will be stupid enough to trade for him next yr i hope, its all about the name it seems.
While on the name Rioli, i know he had limited game time but it seems he is always where the ball aint and always chasing an opponent.
So far what ive seen i dont think he will make it.At best its another development yr in the two.s for him imo.
We basically broke even in the ruck is there really a need to play both especially with Balta capable of giving one a chop out. Imo the answer to that is no. Imo Tom Lynch is one who should be thrown in there to help free him up a bit in games.
Martyn got just under a quarter and had just the two touches
Brown who i wish we had started at h/b or on a wing never got a run.
On wingers McIntosh had one of his better games but am i the only one who see's the fumbles and it cost us a few times again.
FFS its a preseason game and my attitude is if you can not get a kick in these games you never will.
Nyuon looks terribly undersized still and Gibcus in the same boat has already gone past him. In the real stuff would hate to see either have to play on a big key fwd.
Ralphsmith imo has done enough to get a gig rnd one would still like to see him locked in the gym with a side of beef.
Balta well the old saying always harder to find a key fwd than a key back. We have found a key fwd he was always there. Just hope when he has quite games we don't cop people coming out demanding he go back. He will have his share of quite ones.
Finally if Carlton go with Tom DeKoning stuff, Mckay and C Curnow then i hope we play Miller instead of Gibcus for the opener.
Bottom line is it was a practice game but i don't see the players coming thru to improve us this year there will be a heavy reliance again on not getting many injuries

BUCKLEY’S “BIG WINNERS” AND LYON’S “BIGGEST STORY” FROM THE WEEKEND OF FOOTY
By Andrew Slevison
SEN
7 March 2022
Nathan Buckley has praised Richmond after the weekend of AAMI Community Series action, suggesting their hunger for success remains.
The Tigers beat Hawthorn by 25 points in Devonport in their final tune up before the 2022 season kicks off next week.
Damien Hardwick’s side was irrepressible early on, kicking seven goals in the opening quarter courtesy of slick ball movement, as well as their renowned hunt and pressure which helped deliver three premierhips in the past five seasons.
Former Collingwood coach Buckley spoke highly of the way the Tigers played, outlining some of the areas in which they shone against a developing Hawks outfit.
“I thought Richmond,” Buckley said on SEN Breakfast when asked if there was one team that stood out.
“The way they went about it, some of the positional shifts.
“I thought the Tigers were the big winners.
“I don’t think they were playing much, to be honest. Hawthorn have got a lot of work to do and they are a young group that are going to come through.
“I really like the way the Tigers are setting up and they only recently had a lot of success. I still think they’re a really hungry unit.”
Hardwick has made a couple of positional moves this pre-season, including Noah Balta shifting from his role as a key defender to the forward line.
The 22-year-old kicked three goals, took seven marks, had five inside 50s and 10 score involvements in an accomplished performance in a forward line also featuring Jack Riewoldt and Tom Lynch.
Garry Lyon was full of praise for Balta’s move, describing it as the “biggest story” of the weekend.
“I thought he (Balta) was the biggest one of the weekend and I saw about 70 per cent of the footy played,” said Lyon.
“Going forward to back is a soda compared with going back to forward. If you can get a back to forward as we saw with Balta, I thought that was the biggest story of the weekend.
“(He was) crazy good.”
Buckley added: “He is enormously athletic. He was really good as a defender, came on in the last 18 months.
“That will be a watch.”
The addition of Balta makes it a potentially top-heavy attack, considering one of Toby Nankervis or Ivan Soldo could also spend time deep, but Buckley believes the Tigers have enough balance with their dexterous smalls, including Jason Castagna.
He added: “That’s some real height there. Whether they can run with all those guys?
“Castagna’s been a player who has played in the middle (at times). He’s given them pressure but he’s also given them a little bit of aerial. He struggles to finish off his work, but in their system he brings heat that they can’t do without.
“I think aerial is just going to be an even more important part of the game as team defences improve.
“If Balta, Lynch and Riewoldt, plus a ruckman, are down the line for Richmond and they’ve got ground level players to speed up from or (apply) pressure - and that’s largely what they built their premierships on - it’s going to be pretty damaging.”
Liam Baker, who is a two-time premiership defender, returned to the forward line late last season and was again busy in attack on Saturday, even spending time through the middle.
Buckley lauded the hard-nosed 24-year-old while indicating that he believes the Tigers could return to contend in 2022 with players like him in full flight.
“The other one that went from back to forward was Baker,” Buckley said further.
“I think what they’ve identified is we’ve always done this on our hunt and pressure, raise the fight, and he’s one of the best (at that). He cut his teeth as a small forward, went to the wing, went back and played really good footy.
“They clearly need his hunt and pressure in the front half.
“There was a five-minute period where he laid three tackles and I thought, ‘Wow, this is going to be good for them’.
“I reckon they’re going to be real good again.”

3. Positional shifts
Buckley: “The fact that when coaches see traits in their players and understand the balance of their best teams, because that’s what they’re looking to do, preparing to produce a team, to develop a team, that is going to beat the best on the big stage.”
“(Noah Balta) was really good as a defender, came on in the last 18 months, but (him moving forward) will be a watch.
“The other one who went from back to forward was Baker. What they’ve identified Richmond is, ‘we’ve done this on our hunt and our pressure’ and he cut his teeth as a small forward.
“Went to a wing, went back, and played really good footy, but they clearly need his hunt and pressure in the forward half and there was a five minute period where he laid three tackles and I thought, wow, this is going to be good for them and I reckon they’re going to be real good again.”

Dimma said he was mostly happy with what he saw on the weekend. Got some good work into the players. He did admit he actually was a little bit angry at the end of the game as he wanted us to go on with it after half-time but he understood we were 50 points in a preseason game and subconsciously the players may have taken a little but off with the game won.
