Title: Injury updates 2022
Post by: one-eyed on March 03, 2022, 07:49:55 PM
Physical performance manager, Peter Burge's latest injury report.

Kane Lambert, hip - See Lambert thread.

Jack Graham, hamstring

"Jack's going really well. Jack resumed footy skills this week. Jack's had a number of complaints over the pre-season, he's had a hip, a back issue, a glute issue, and then a little hamstring issue on the camp. So, he's missed quite a bit of football skills training, but he's done quite a lot of conditioning. It's that transition from the conditioning to the football training now that we're trying to get a bit more rock-solid, get back-to-back football sessions, and then ultimately some game time. He's not going to play this week against Hawthorn and then we'll be assessing closer to Round 1 what his match play return looks like. But at the moment, he's just working really hard doing the football sessions and we're doing some extra work this weekend, he won't be playing so he'll be doing a pretty big session with a few other guys this Saturday."

Nick Vlastuin, hamstring

"Nick had an incident in the practice match against Geelong last Saturday in the last 30 seconds of the game, where he got a shove in the back and in the same motion within a few steps, kicked the ball quite long and just came to the bench after the game and said he felt a little bit of an issue with his lower hamstring. He started running against last Tuesday, and today he was running and kicking the ball again. It's pretty minor but it's just enough to rule him out of this week (against Hawthorn). I expect he'll be back to full training next week and have a pretty smooth transition into Round 1."

Riley Collier-Dawkins, ribs

"Two days before the Geelong game during our main training session, Riley copped a knock to his ribs and was quite sore the next day. We just made the decision that he would miss the game on the weekend. We weren't too sure if he had a little fracture or broken ribs, but it's turned out that it wasn't too bad and he's recovered quite well. He's trained all week and is available for selection."

Sam Banks, quad

"He's had a couple of niggles since being drafted and we've just taken the time to give him a longer conditioning phase and return to football training phase. He had a little bit of a quad niggle about four weeks ago. So, it's really more of a long-term conditioning focus given he's a draftee and is young, and setting him up for the year. He's been back at training this week, he's done two sessions and we'll give him another couple of weeks of skills training and then we'll look at when he can return to playing in some games.'

Matt Parker, ankle

"'Parks' in our intraclub had a little bit of an ankle issue. He just missed last week and has returned to training this week. He's available for selection this weekend."

Confirmed Mansell has been out the past week due to covid protocols. Returns to training tomorrow and can play on Saturday if selected.

Peter Burge's latest injury report:

Jack Graham (hamstring)

"Jack's available to play this week. Jack's been back training with the main group for the last two weeks after an interrupted pre-season. The last two weeks have been really good. During his rehab process prior to that, he'd done a heap of running, covered a heap of distance, a heap of high-speed running, so his conditioning base is really good and the last two weeks he's been able to participate in skills. So, he's a little bit ahead of schedule and he's available for selection this week. Where he plays, we'll talk about as a match committee and make that decision."

Dylan Grimes (thumb)

See Grimes thread.

Kamdyn McIntosh (calf)

"Kamdyn played against Hawthorn in the game down in Tassie and pulled up with a sore calf, and it's taken a little bit longer to recover than we would have anticipated from the game. So, he's going to be unavailable this week. If the game had been a couple of days later on the weekend, he probably would have been available, but like with most soft tissue injuries, we'd prefer to take the week to make sure he's absolutely right for Round 2."

Nick Vlastuin (hamstring)

"Nick's, unfortunately, had a little bit of a setback. He had a fairly minor incident in the Geelong practice match and we had scans the following week which cleared him of any damage, and we just put him through a short rehab phase of running and kicking. Kicking was the actual original injury, he did it on a kick in the Geelong game. So, he had three rehab sessions where he kicked and felt pretty good and we put him back into the main group late last week, and just at the very start of his warm-up, on one of his kicks, he didn't feel very comfortable and sustained a little bit of further damage. Not major damage, but enough for us to say he's not ready to go. We're just going to have to take a little bit of a longer approach with his rehabilitation. It's a really tricky one, you've got hamstring injuries that you get running really fast, and you've got these hamstring injuries that occasionally occur with kicking, and they can be very tricky, and the rehab and the return from those needs to be carefully progressed. We're going to need to take a bit more time and care with his rehabilitation. We're thinking he'll miss a couple of weeks, it's very hard to put a time frame (on it), but hopefully not too long."

Kane Lambert (hip)

"Last time we spoke, there was all sorts of talk out there around surgery and surgeons. As I said last time, we were consulting various different specialists and he was undergoing some other therapies that we've just completed. The decision with Kane is that he's not having any surgery, he's increasing his training load and progressing his training. If he can stand up and train at that higher intensity and get a number of weeks under his belt, we'll then explore match play. What's important to note with Kane with his hip injury, is that he's had three previous surgeries on this same hip and also one on his other hip. The one we're dealing with at the moment, he's had significant management issues with it in the last year to two years. The last five years really...he's played in three Grand Finals with this hip injury, albeit that it wasn't as bad. But, as he's gotten a little bit older and played more games, it's become more of a management issue. So, we've spoken to all the specialists and got the best advice, and amongst Kane, the specialists, and our medical team, this is the plan that everyone has agreed upon and that's what we're going to progress forward with. So, Kane's increasing his training and we're really looking forward to seeing where that takes us over the next couple of weeks."

Sam Banks (quad)

"He's completed now a full week of football training. 'Banksy' has had a couple of niggles over the pre-season. What we'd like to see is another week or two of full football training, given he's a young first-year draftee. What's important to remember with these first-year players, is the last two to three years, they haven't played a lot of football because of COVID. So, we're taking a more careful approach with those young guys, we want them to have long careers and we want them to have the best chance to finish this season injury-free. He won't play this week in the VFL, but we'll look at it for the following week."

Injury Report: Round 2, 2022

Physical performance manager, Peter Burge's update from the RFC website.

Kamdyn McIntosh, calf

"Kamdyn ran today at top speed and he'll resume main training on Thursday this week. If he gets through that, he'll be available to play."

Nick Vlastuin, hamstring

"Nick's injury is a little bit more complicated. Nick's actually running flat out right now, he's pretty much close to top speed and he looks really great running. But, it was a kicking-related injury and the injury is quite low on his biceps muscle in his hamstring group. So, we're progressing his kicking in a very structured and specific manner, he's kicking a light football at the moment, short kicks, and that will be progressed stage by stage, increasing the distance and the size of the football to a point where hopefully he's kicking the full-size footy over a long distance in the next week or two. In terms of timewise, he's certainly not playing this week, and I'd say he's doubtful for the following week. But if we see some progression in the next week-and-a-half with his kicking, and then we can look at return to play. In the meantime, we're progressing that part of his rehab."

Kane Lambert, hip

"Kane stepped up his involvement in football last week and we're going to look to step it up again this week. He's doing most things in our training except our match play. Match play requires all forms of physical movement; laterally, bending down, picking up, top speed running, all those things. There are a number of things that he's now been able to do, we just need a body of work in those things. The final thing we need him to do is participate in a little bit of match play training which we're going to assess for Thursday. Once we get to that point, we're going to need a couple of weeks of backing up and doing that, and then we'll talk about match play. In the short-term, it's trying to get him to a point where he can participate in a little bit of match simulation at training, so we're going to assess that this week and see where we end up and we'll have an update next week."

Update from the AFL website:

Jack Riewoldt required thumb surgery after the Tigers' round one loss to Carlton and sat out the win over the Giants at the MCG on Sunday, but has made a strong recovery and is likely to line-up in the annual Maddie's Match at Marvel Stadium.

"Jack's going to train and he'll be available if he completes training this week," Richmond's physical performance manager Peter Burge told AFL.com.au.

"He saw the specialist yesterday and got the tick-off and he said to him he could train and, if he was comfortable, he could play, so I'm expecting that will happen. Jack's pretty tough so I'm expecting that will be the case."

Dylan Grimes was a late withdrawal for the win over the Giants after pulling up sore from training ahead of the game, but Burge said the Tigers' co-captain should be back to take on the Saints.

"It was pretty minor and a bit of a frustrating one. He slipped over at training the other day and pulled up sore and it's just an area that he's had a problem with in the past. The smart thing to do was not to play and he's settled fine. He will train on Wednesday and if that's fine then he'll be playing," Burge said.

Dion Prestia Prestia looks likely to play in round four against the Western Bulldogs as the Tigers take extra time on the important midfielder, with coach Damien Hardwick getting back some of his senior stars after an injury-hit start to the campaign.

Nick Vlastuin is participating in training as he takes cautious steps in his hamstring recovery, having not yet progressed to long-kicking drills. The Tigers are careful not to build his training up too quickly as they take a "very conservative" approach with the triple premiership defender.

Thomson Dow - see Dow thread.

Josh Caddy - VFL report says he has done a hamstring.

The club is giving Martin as much time as he needs as he considers his next move, while Lambert is a long-term proposition with his hip injury. - Cal Twomey

Latest injury report from Peter Burge:

Watch: https://www.richmondfc.com.au/video/1096062/injury-report-riewoldt-prestia-vlastuin-lambert

------------------------

Dylan Grimes, hamstring

"Dylan will be sent for scans today (Tuesday) to check the severity of the injury. It's a fairy stock-standard type hamstring injury, running at reasonable high speed. He noticed it in the third quarter and came off the ground. It's really unfortunate for Dylan and for us. The last two months, Dylan's training has been interrupted quite frequently with various things. In January, he had a calf injury off the Christmas break and then he hurt his ankle in training, then he had COVID in the pre-season, then hurt his thumb... It's fair to say he's been very interrupted. His preparation hasn't been perfect, and there's no doubt that's probably played a bit of a role in this. It's just a really difficult situation, he was available to play and trained all last week, and it's not a great result for Dylan. But, we're going to do some good work in his rehab going forward and make sure we get him right and give him some consistently at training and then when he's back, we want him to stay back."

Jack Riewoldt, thumb

"Jack completed most of training at the end of last week but it was deemed by the match committee that he wasn't quite ready to go. He's training this week and if he completes training this Thursday, he'll be available for selection."

Dion Prestia, hamstring

"Dion's been really good. He's had a really good last two weeks. So, he's going to end up having only missed two games. He completed a huge session last Saturday and he's ticked all the boxes. He's worked really hard, as he did the previous couple of months, with his preparation. So, he trained today and he will train our main training on Thursday, and if that goes to plan, then he's available for selection for Saturday night."

Nick Vlastuin, hamstring

"Nick's going very well. He's now kicking the footy further with more intensity. He looked really good today... We feel like we've got over the hump there, and now it's just about consolidating and making sure we get a couple more back-to-back sessions...He won't play this week but it's looking pretty good for next week."

Kane Lambert, hip

"Kane, the last two weeks, has done our main training session. He's doing one main session per week and a light running session earlier in the week with his longer-term hip management. He'll repeat that process again this week. He's ticking a lot of boxes and it's going really well for Kane. He's getting some back-to-back sessions together and is going great which is fantastic for him."

Early prognosis
Grimes returned last week against the Saints but ended the game with ice around his hamstring and will miss the next block of games after a strain. Off-setting that for this week is the fact Prestia is likely to return from his own hamstring problem and Riewoldt should also be back after narrowly missing last week's loss to St Kilda after a skin infection in his thumb. Vlastuin looks more likely to be available in round five. - Cal Twomey

Latest Pilot Medical Update ahead of Friday night's Round 7 match against West Coast at Optus Stadium.

Dylan Grimes, hamstring

"Dylan's going really well. Dylan's had a fantastic last week and a half. Last week in our main training session, he completed most of our drills and a fair bit extra to try and simulate match conditions. This week with the short turnaround and the five-day break, we only have one main training session which is not quite a normal week for us, and that session will be a bit lighter, given the turn-around so we're going to have to do a little bit extra. So at this stage, we're still going to go through the session with Dylan and we'll make an assessment after that whether he's absolutely ready to go, so we'll have more of an update after tomorrow's session."

Thomson Dow, quad cork

"It's unfortunate, if you go back a week he had a pretty significant corkie in the Adelaide game, which took a while during the week to progress. But we got him through main training and he actually felt really good. So, we decided he was available to play, and then he's got another knock in the Melbourne game in a similar area. It's not as sore at this stage compared to last week, but the five days is going to make it pretty difficult. So, right now he's probably more doubtful than probable. We'll know a bit more after tomorrow's session."

Kane Lambert, managed

"Kane will full train tomorrow (Wednesday) and if he gets through that, he'll be available. He did do our main training session last week leading into the Melbourne game, but he just flagged with us that he hadn't quite recovered from the VFL game and his long-term hip injury was not quite where he needed it to be. It's just going to be an ongoing management thing for Kane, given the nature of what he's dealing with. But, I'd be pretty optimistic that if he gets through tomorrow, then we might see him playing his first AFL game (of 2022) this week in Perth."

Ivan Soldo, toe

"Ivan, similar to the others, will do the full main training session tomorrow and if he gets through that, he'll be available. He had a pretty badly infected toe which actually got worse during last week after his game in the VFL and he had to go to hospital for antibiotics and minor surgery to clean it up...That was pretty late in the week and ruled him out of the Melbourne game...Providing (training on Wednesday) goes well, he's up for selection."

Hugo Ralphsmith, ribs

"He's feeling a lot better. In the Adelaide game, he had a pretty nasty collision and got three cracked ribs out of it and some bruising on his lung. He wasn't up for selection last week and won't be up for selection this week given the short turnaround. Moving into next week, it's resuming non-contact drills and then the doctor making an assessment on whether he can take that contact and return to play. In a week's time, we'll have a better idea of what that looks like but right now, he's working on the things he can do."

Noah Cumberland, knee

"Noah had a bit of a knee issue out of the VFL game prior to last weekend, but he's pulled up pretty well and he'll be back training this week. There's no VFL game this week, but he's up for selection for the AFL."

Marlion Pickett, hamstring

"Marlion's got a very small hamstring issue which he sustained in the Adelaide game. He played the game with it and did a fantastic job, but pulled up a little bit sore last Monday. He did some training last week but we just took the decision to play the conservative option with him and with five days into the West Coast game, it's line ball whether he'll be right for that, so we've ruled him out for this week as well and we're confident that going into the Collingwood game, he'll be back at main training."

Josh Caddy, hamstring

"Josh is progressing well. He's had some issues with his hamstring over the last month and has been a little bit stop-start. He also had to go into the Health and Safety Protocols last week which made his rehab a bit more challenging. He's back today (Tuesday) and has been running again but we'll take this one a bit slower and make sure we get it right."

Tom Brown, calf cork

"Tom had a pretty nasty calf cork in the VFL two weeks ago, and it actually got worse during the week after the game before it got better. Tom also had to go into the Health and Safety Protocols. So, he's back this week and has started running again. There's no VFL game this weekend, so he'll have a longer preparation into the next VFL game."

Early prognosis

Lambert will have to get through training this week in order to play on Friday night, having been held out of the VFL due to the short turnaround. The Friday night game could also count against Dylan Grimes, who is closing in on a return. Soldo has undergone a minor operation on his toe, but is a chance to return. Dow has now received corkies in the same spot on his thigh in successive weeks and looks set to be rested. Pickett is aiming to return against Collingwood, while Caddy’s rehab has been delayed after he was under health and safety protocols last week. – Sarah Black

Missing Grimes a lot.

I hope Caddy retires before MSD and stays VFL.

I think Caddy would only go if they paid out his contract .  I think he has another year or two after this one.

Medical Update: Round 8, 2022:

Dion Prestia, ankle/Achilles/illness

"Dion had a couple of things going on the other night. There was a bit of an issue with his ankle and his Achilles and his lower calf as well, obviously all linked. Halfway through the game, he reported this to our medical team and we made the decision to sub him out of the game. And he's actually crook today (Tuesday), he's at home, so we haven't had a chance to look at him on the track. We have our main training session this week on Thursday so we'll assess him then to see where he's at, see if he can do some running or participate in any skill work, so we'll have an update after training on Thursday."

Dustin Martin, personal leave

"Dustin's been training with us now for a week and a half. Last Friday, he completed quite a big session out here with the other guys who didn't have a game last week and he did a huge workload in terms of total kilometres, some intensity, some handball games, match simulation type training. And he's trained today with us as well. He's looking really good to potentially be available for selection this week. We've got another main session on Thursday and all being great in that, then I'd anticipate he would be up for selection."

Marlion Pickett, hamstring/personal leave

"Marlion had a bit of a hamstring issue after the Adelaide Crows game which was two weeks ago, which had settled reasonably well. Then Marlion also took some personal time and got back to Perth last week, he hadn't been back in Perth since late 2020 with all the restrictions. He didn't play in the game last week but he had a really good session today (Tuesday) and he's going to resume with the group on Thursday in our main training session and we'll make a call on  selection after that, but it's looking promising at this stage."

Hugo Ralphsmith, ribs

"Hugo's going really well. He's done all of our training the last few weeks, albeit non-contact. Today, we did a little bit of work with him around the contact side of things which didn't go too badly, but we need to probably have another look at it again on Thursday with full contact in our drills. At this stage, it's a little bit of a questionable one for us, we've got to make a decision after Thursday as to whether we move forward into match play on the weekend or whether we take another week."

Tom Brown, calf cork

"Tom was dealing with a significant calf cork and we had the VFL bye last week which gave him some extra time to recover from that. He resumed training today and he'll be in train with the group on Thursday so I expect he will play on the weekend."

Thomson Dow, quad cork

"Thomson was pretty close (last weekend). If we go back to the Adelaide game he had a significant corkie and with the five-day turnaround into the Melbourne game, he didn't quite have time to recover. And just with that previously corkie the week before, it was just a safer option with the younger player to miss last week. He actually trained last Friday with Dustin and the rest of the guys and did quite well, but is a little bit restricted still. He trained today, he'll train again on Thursday and be available again this week."

Samson Ryan, Achilles

"'Samson has a little bit of Achilles tendonitis. We had the bye last week from the VFL which certainly helped settle that, but we've just taken the safe often to miss a game this week, given he's one of our bigger games and plays pretty big game time playing in the ruck at VFL level. The safe option is to make sure we get this right and don't have a lingering Achilles issue. He felt good today so I'd say next week we'd be making a decision on his availability."

Early prognosis
Richmond's injury room is set to be a lot freer this week, with a host of players – including possibly Martin – available for selection. Given Prestia's lengthy injury history, the club is likely to be cautious with the important midfielder, especially as he has been unable to come into the club due to illness. Richmond's VFL side had a bye last weekend, giving the likes of Dow, Cumberland and Brown an extra week to recover. Ryan has minor Achilles tendonitis. – Sarah Black

So based on the afl and vfl teams named it looks like we only have 2 players unavailable out of our whole senior list. Gibcus out 1 week in H&S protocols and Mansell out 1 week suspended.

If that’s correct then that’s a fantastic spot for us to be in.

Medical Update: Round 10, 2022

Noah Balta, hamstring

"Noah had an incident later in the (Round 9) game kicking a long kick inside-50. He changed his kick at the last minute, which probably contributed a little bit to the injury. He's got a typical hamstring strain, but a kicking-related hamstring strain. He's already moving quite well, he's had three running sessions this week already and he's feeling pretty good. I think the Sydney game will be a stretch, so it's more after the bye that we think his return will be. So, he's in a rehab process now and we'll progress his high-speed running, his sprinting and his kicking progression to make sure we tick that off. So, we're looking at after the bye."

Josh Gibcus, AFL Heath & Safety Protocols

"Josh is good, he's back training today (Thursday) and he's freshened up a fair bit. He's had a week in isolation which limits what you can do obviously, but we have a number of things that we try to get the players to do in that confined space... strength equipment, on the spot-type conditioning, skipping and even some drills... It's probably a little blessing in disguise for him being an 18-year-old who hasn't played a lot of footy over the past two years given COVID... So, he's pretty fresh, he trained really well today and he'll come into consideration for this weekend."

Jack Graham, toe

"Jack had a bit of an issue with his big toe during the (Round 9) game. He got forced into a position where a player fell across his foot but his big toe was pretty sore towards the end of the game last week and impacted his running a little bit. So, we had some scans earlier in the week and it was good news in a sense that some of the soft tissue tendon is in tact and there's no real damage there, it's just the big toe joint that we're dealing with. He was barely able to walk the first two days of this week, but was walking much better yesterday and today he had a jog and even did some light strides and is feeling a lot better. So, we're going to assess him again tomorrow and we'll make a call on his selection."

Peter Burge's injury update 23/05/2022:

Tom Lynch, hamstring

"Tom had scans on Sunday that showed a mild strain in his lower hamstring area. It's in a similar spot to the issue he had in the pre-season, it's not in the same spot, but given it's in close proximity we need to take a bit of extra care. It's actually pulled up really well, he's running today (Monday) and we feel like it's going to turn around pretty quickly... He'll get moving pretty quickly this week and I anticipate he'll be doing a fair bit next week. He's obviously not playing this week, but post-bye we'll have to make the decision as to how quickly we return, if we give him an extra week or how that plays out. But we're certainly doing a fair bit of investigation and looking at his program. But it's not going to be a long injury, it's just how we calculate the time-frame and when he's safe to return so that he stays returned and we don't have another problem."

Kane Lambert, hip

"Kane's hip is really sore. He's played four games in a row now and with his long-term hip issue, we kind of expected we would have a situation where he would have to miss games. He did unbelievably well to play four in a row. We didn't expect it to be as sore on (Saturday) night (because) he trained last Thursday and was feeling quite good, but it's a little bit unpredictable. But Kane himself flagged that he was struggling and it was getting sorer. So, really now it's a situation where he needs a little bit more recovery time for that hip to settle over the bye, and I would anticipate that he'd be back training again leading into the Port Adelaide game. So, we'll assess as we go as we usually do, and we will then look at how many games optimally he could play in a row. The longer breaks certainly help, the eight or nine-day breaks, and the six-day breaks make it tougher for him. So, it's a little bit disappointing for Kane that he didn't complete the game but we'll reload and we'll go again."

Jack Graham, toe

"He ran today and ran much better than he was at the end of last week. He was relatively close (to playing) last week, but we just took the decision that the turnaround was a little bit too quick given the joint issue that he had. But, today he was much better and I'd expect him to be training with the main group on Wednesday and all that going well, he would be available for selection."

Noah Balta, hamstring

"He's really good. Today, he was running out here and was running quite fast. We're just progressing his kicking progression given it was a kicking-related injury...He won't be available this week, but I would expect after the bye we'll hopefully be in a really good position for the Port Adelaide game. But, we will take a measured approach and make sure that we go through those kicking progressions carefully to get a really good result for Noah, but it's looking really positive."

Pilot Medical Update: Round 16, 2022

Peter Burge's injury update:

Dion Prestia, concussion - See Prestia thread.

Trent Cotchin, clavicle

"Trent had a plate put into where the crack was in his clavicle to reinforce it. Now, there's just a period of time for that to heal and the bone to heal. So, we're really under the surgeon's instructions with this. He's probably going to miss a couple more weeks. As to exactly what his return game will be, we're not too sure at this stage, he certainly isn't playing this week or next week. But, he is back doing some non-contact training, he can actually run and move quite well and he feels pretty comfortable. He's actually going to get a good little block of training in and it's really down to the surgeon and our doctor as to when it's safe for him to play again, but it gives us a good opportunity in the meantime to tune him up a bit and get him ready for the final stages of the season."

Kane Lambert, hip

"It's a week-to-week proposition with Kane with his chronic long-term hip injury... He didn't play last week but he did do our main training session. We're leaving it in Kane's hands to flag with us if he thinks a full game is possible, and last week he just didn't think he was quite ready to go. This week, he's feeling a little bit better, he did a little bit of training today and he'll do our main session on Thursday this week, and then we'll make a decision for his availability on Sunday, keeping in mind that the game the following week is six days later."

Noah Balta, hamstring

"Noah's progressing through his hamstring rehab. Today, he ran at a really good speed, probably about 90 per cent. We've introduced some ground balls and the various football actions where he got injured in the game. That's what we try to do, replicate the type of injury and how it was caused. Hitting top speed and his football actions are what we're working on at the moment, so he'll be in a pretty strong position by the weekend and then we have to make a decision next week as to how this looks into the Gold Coast game or the North Melbourne game the week after that. I would say the North Melbourne game is the most realistic."

Piling up?

I honestly think we've been very lucky (touchwood)..
Take a look at Carlton as an example

Providing we don't have any new injuries, our list will consist of Sydney Stack in two weeks time

Blessed to this point

Easy there Damo, I said the same thing a few weeks ago and we’ve been getting a new (albeit short term) injury each game since  :help

Updated: July 5, 2022

Early prognosis
The Tigers confirmed Martin has a "small hamstring strain" and will miss the Gold Coast clash. It’s unlikely they will rush him back the following week against North Melbourne and he can expect good mate Cotchin to keep him company on the sidelines for the next fortnight. Prestia looks to have recovered well from concussion and should be available to face the Suns. – Howard Kimber

Pilot Medical Update: Round 18, 2022

Update from Peter Burge:

Toby Nankervis, knee - See Nank's thread.

Tom Lynch, hamstring

"Tom, early in the game in the first five minutes, was accelerating to chase and had some awareness in his right hamstring, the opposite leg to his injury from a couple of weeks back. He took the shot at goal and then came off and flagged with us that he didn't feel comfortable. Some scans today have shown that he's got a little bit of signal. So, he's going to miss this week and we'll put him though a short rehab phase. Hopefully it will be a very short-term injury, but we'll wait and see."

Dustin Martin, hamstring

"Dustin's progressing well. He didn't play on the weekend with his injury from the West Coast game, but he's progressing his speed and some kicking and agility. He won't be available this week, and given next week it's a short turnaround on the Friday night, it's going to be touch and go. Dustin's missed some footy earlier in the year as well with some time off, so it's really important that we maximise his preparation and make sure that when he comes back, he's safe and he can finish off the year strongly."

Ivan Soldo, hand

"Ivan had an incident during the game where he's broken his thumb. He's having some surgery tomorrow (Tuesday) and he'll miss this week, but we think it's a very short turnaround and we're hopeful he'll be available next week."

Jack Ross, knee

"On our main session last Thursday we had a little bit of match simulation and he was involved in an incident where he twisted and tweaked the medial ligament in his knee. He came out at the end of that session and did some running and was actually feeling not too bad, so we took him up to the Gold Coast to give him every chance... But in our Captain's Run he wasn't 100 per cent comfortable, so we took him out of the squad... Right now he's in the doubtful category, but we'll wait and see how the week pans out."

Josh Gibcus, illness

"He was ill last week and just needed the week to recover. He started training with us today (Monday) so he'll get the full week of training in and will be available for selection this week."

Noah Balta, hamstring

"Noah's coming off a hamstring injury and he will do full training this week and be available for selection, providing he gets through the full week of training."

Trent Cotchin, clavicle

"Trent had that clavicle surgery a fortnight ago. He's going to resume training with us this week. He's seeing the surgeon tomorrow and our doctors will hopefully give him the tick off to be available this week, but we'll have more news on that later in the week."

Kane Lambert, Achilles/hip

"Kane has been managing his long-term chronic hip injury. He wasn't feeling good enough last week during training and he's also developed a little bit of Achilles tendonitis out of the previous game he played where he was the sub. It's a difficult one with Kane, because he's missed a little bit of football now and a little bit of training with the hip. So, we're going to put a couple of weeks of preparation back into Kane and let things settle a little bit and try and tune him up for the last part of the season. Hopefully we'll see him back out there again soon."

Sydney Stack, fractured cheekbone

"There was an incident in the VFL game where he has an undisplaced fracture in his cheekbone. No surgery needed, so now it's just healing time. He had a little bit of a concussion episode with that, so he's in the 12-day concussion protocol, but he also needs a couple of weeks for the cheekbone. He won't be playing this weekend and I don't think he'll be available the following week, we'll keep everyone updated over the next few weeks."

Early prognosis
The loss to Gold Coast was compounded by injuries to key players, but Richmond is confident none are too serious. Nankervis is a chance to face North Melbourne and Soldo may miss just one week. Lynch will also miss but his hamstring injury is on the slight side. The good news is Josh Gibcus, Balta and Cotchin are all expected to play, while Nick Vlastuin returns from suspension. – Howard Kimber

Medical Update: Round 20, 2022

Peter Burge
RichmondFC.com.au
26 July 2022

Tom Lynch, hamstring

"He's had a pretty good week-and-a-half. Initially, the injury against Gold Coast (Round 17) in the first five minutes of the game, there wasn't too much in it, but it was enough for us to withdraw him from the game and put him back into our rehab group after some scans. He got going pretty quickly in the first seven days, then last week he progressed and was running quite fast by the end of the week. So, we've pretty much started full training this week and he completed full training today. We've got another session on Thursday... And I anticipate he'll be selected for Sunday's game."

Dustin Martin, hamstring

"Dustin initially had the incident against West Coast (Round 16) and it was determined as a minor hamstring issue. Based on Dustin's previous history, he's recovered quite well from these sorts of things. But we found two weeks in that it was moving a little slower than we would have liked, and last week he was doing some strides at about 50 per cent and felt a little bit of a grab in that same tissue. He had some scans which showed what we thought had happened and we've just had to take back a step and slow his running down. He's had two running sessions since and got through those, but we've had to go back a little bit in terms of his rehab program in the gym environment as well. It's going to extend his timeframe which is unfortunate and disappointing, but we want to make sure when we get players back, they're back and they stay back."

Jack Ross, knee

"He had a little bit of a medial ligament strain in his knee from a training session a few weeks ago. Last week, he participated in full training but still didn't feel quite right. But he's full trained today and feels a lot better and I'd expect he'll be available for selection this weekend."

Samson Ryan, concussion

"He copped a knock in the game and at the time there weren't any symptoms that needed attention. But, he reported some headache symptoms on Monday morning and the doctor has made the call that he needs to sit out this week. It's a bit of a delayed effect from a knock in the game. As we know with concussion, we take it seriously and it's really important for the player welfare that we make a smart decision."

Grimes has suffered a high hamstring strain, in the same area that caused him significant grief around 10 years ago. The Tigers have said he's doubtful to play in the remainder of the home and away season, and there'll be a further update to come in the next few days. Yep did it again 19 days ago and still listed as 2-3 weeks. Should be playing this weekend even restricted minutes to get fitness for finals.
Club's soft tissue management is disgraceful the last two years.

Noone is playing 21 days after redoing a hammy. Even Peter Burge wouldn’t allow that ::)

So just so we are clear - you guys wanna rush dusty back but think our soft tissue injury management is rubbish ?  :clapping

you guys? who actually said that?

i said the diagnosis is FOS, as it has dusty listed as 2-3 making it a potential 6 weeks after a second hammy is not normal for a guy who has no history of soft tissue injuries.

I would understand 1 week which means limited game time next week.

Also there may not be a next week after the bombers game.

Will be 23 days on Sunday when we play Hawks. Still listed as 2-3 weeks away though.

Glad you asked to clear it up - nobody is suggesting that at all from what I can see. Just stating that if he was recovering on schedule then his 2-3 week lay off should be ending and he should be returning to the team on Sunday, but either his recovery is going poorly and this isn't communicated by the club or something else is going on.

Don't want to rush him back, just want to know why it's behind schedule.

He gets it!

Heck I'd even let him play VFL just 50% game time so he has some sort of run around without compromising the health of the AFL team or his own hammies by playing too hard/long.

They did communicate last week that it wasn’t progressing as they’d like. They also said they’re hopeful he could play some part in the bombers game which is in a fortnight hence the 2-3 weeks that is listed. Not sure what all the fuss is about.

Peter Burge's latest injury update:

Jack Graham, foot

"Jack's in a situation now where he's had a turf toe type issue for most of the season and we've been managing it as well as we can. Jack's been unbelievable in his ability to train and to manage that problem, but he started to feel some awareness and soreness on the outside of his foot on the weekend which caught us by surprise a little bit, and we had some scans on Monday which showed he's got a little bit of a stress issue, a stress reaction, in his third metatarsal. Jack's in a moon boot at the moment and he'll be offloaded for seven days. It's on the minor end of stress-type injuries, so we're hopeful that in the backend of next week we'll be running again. In terms of the finals series, he's certainly at this stage questionable for the first final, but we're optimistic that we'll have him in a position where he'll be hopefully training and available to play that week."

Shane Edwards, ankle

"Shane just had an incident with his ankle where he fell on the ground and someone fell across him and it just jammed his ankle into the ground. So, he was a little bit sore at the time, came off the ground and reported it and got re-strapped and went back onto the ground. So, there's no issue there and he'll be playing this week."

Dustin Martin, hamstring

"He's certainly progressed in the last week and even what we saw today was really promising. Dustin's barely had an injury, let alone a soft-tissue injury, in his whole career, so sometimes these things can be tricky and the player can be a little apprehensive, and given we had a little incident a few weeks ago, it's just taken us a little bit of time to build some confidence and make that progression. But, in the last seven days there's been great progress, and we're running at a speed now and changing direction, kicking, all the things we need to do to tick off. So, I would expect in the next seven days there would be more progression and then we can talk about return to skills. At this stage, things are looking really good. Obviously he won't be playing this week, but we've then got the bye week into the finals, and whenever our first final falls we'll make a plan hopefully for Dustin."

Dylan Grimes, hamstring

"Dylan had surgery around 12 days ago. He had a bit of work in his upper hamstring tendon, proximal tendon area, a bit of reinforcement to give it some real strength. Given the issue we've dealt with in the past, that was the decision that Dylan and the surgeons made... He's had that surgery, he's now recovering from that surgery, and we're planning the next steps in terms of how we get him moving again and what that looks like. Obviously with the finals series coming up, he won't be playing in our first final. If we're fortunate to move deeper into finals, there is some chance that Dylan can get back, but right now it's more on the less likely side of things. But, we'll never say never... He's one of our captains and we'll be doing everything we can to prepare him to play in the later part of the season if we can progress and perform really well."

Thomson Dow, concussion

"He'll go through the final stages of the concussion protocols with the doctor, he's done everything he needed. So, I expect he'll pass that and will be playing this weekend."

 Dustin Martin    Hamstring    2-3 weeks
 Dylan Grimes    Hamstring    3-4 weeks

Early prognosis
Graham has been managing a "turf toe-type injury" this season and it flared up against Hawthorn. Scans have shown a minor stress reaction in his foot, and he's set to be a test for the first final. Edwards should play this week after tweaking his ankle, while Martin is progressing well and is hopeful for the elimination final. Grimes has definitely been ruled out of the first final.

Does sound like it although I’d still bring him straight in for a prelim or even a granny if we make it that far.

That would have some Phil Davis 2019 vibes about it.

Agreed. Though Davis declared himself right to play when he clearly wasn't. I'd like to think Grimes would declare himself not right to play in similar circumstances.

Correct. Davis was never actually fit to play. I’m assuming grimes gets cleared to play and gets through training. Given the calibre of the player coupled with the fact I don’t think Gibcus is providing much atm I think it’s worth doing.

It's a short list, but some fairly big names to say the least. Lynch is all but certain to play in the elimination final against Brisbane, while Martin and Graham are listed as "questionable", rather than Lynch's "probable". – Sarah Black

Peter Burge's latest medical update - August 29

Dustin Martin (hamstring)

"Dustin had a really encouraging session today (Monday) and he fully trained the whole session, on top of fully training on Saturday. He's ticked all the markers that we wanted him to in terms of full return to training and for his availability. So, at the moment he's completed everything we've asked of him and now it's just a matter of taking it to match committee, and the coaches and us as a match committee deciding if he's available for selection or not."

Jack Graham (foot)

"Jack, in a similar situation to Dustin, was modified last week and had some boxes to tick just with recovering from his foot injury. He did most of training on Saturday and today he fully trained, so he is available for selection for Thursday night."

Dylan Grimes (hamstring)

"Dylan has started running in the last week and has progressed actually a little quicker than we'd expected. So, today he was running at about 60 per cent pace and he started changing direction and doing some low level agility movements. His progression has been really encouraging. As I've said previously, the deeper we go into the finals, the better the chance Dylan has of returning. But certainly today, the speed he was able to get to was really encouraging for us."

Tom Lynch (groin soreness)

"'Lynchy' is really good. He fully trained today off the back of training on Saturday, so he'll also be available for selection this week."

Noah Cumberland (foot)

"Noah had an incident last Thursday. We had a pretty strong hit-out with the whole group, some match practice, and he just had some direct trauma onto his foot. He kicked another player's leg and at the time it didn't look so good, but he pulled up really well within 24 hours, it was just a really bad bruise on the top of his foot. He trained on Saturday and fully trained today and he's fine, he'll be ready to go Thursday night."
