Half-back stuff — Jayden Short (Richmond)
There’s a reason Short was recently rewarded with a five-year extension from Richmond. The dual premiership Tiger and 2020 best and fairest winner has been building his game in recent years, and in 2022, has gone to yet another level. Averaging a personal best 27.4 disposals and 6.1 marks per game as one of the best accumulators in the competition, the raking kicker on both sides of his body has also shown a capacity to play more through the midfield.
Full-forward — Tom Lynch (Richmond)
The brute full forward has returned to his absolute best form of years past, currently leading the Coleman Medal with 31 goals through nine rounds. It’s come off the back of a dominant four weeks from Lynch, kicking seven goals against West Coast, six against Collingwood and then four against Hawthorn. Good kicking is good football, and Lynch has provided just that for the Tigers. Also ranking first in the competition for contested marks and fourth in marks inside 50, Lynch is primed to cause major headaches for opposition defences for the rest of the season.
Forward pocket — Shai Bolton (Richmond)
Bolton has gone to another level again after his breakout 2021 season. As damaging as ever before, the 23-year old has averaged 19 disposals per game and booted 18 goals in a brilliant campaign, ranking fifth in the competition in score involvements and sixth in goal assists and centre clearances. His recent form has helped the Tigers surge back into the top eight, going at 23.6 disposals and 2.3 goals over his last three contests.

HOW THE ALL-AUSTRALIAN FORWARD LINE IS SHAPING AFTER 16 ROUNDS
By Andrew Slevison
SEN
6 July 2022
SEN’s The Run Home crew have named their All-Australian forward line after 16 rounds of the 2022 season.
Former Adelaide forward Josh Jenkins picked his six forwards as well as a seventh who would be named on the bench.
Jenkins’ All-Australian forwards:
HF: Christian Petracca (MEL) / Charlie Curnow (CAR) / Shai Bolton (RIC)
“Petracca has contributed to a lot (of goals).
“I’ve got Charlie Curnow at centre half-forward and Shai Bolton on the other half-forward stuff.”
FF: Charlie Cameron (BRI) / Tom Hawkins (GEE) / Jeremy Cameron (GEE)
“I went Cameron of the Charlie variety, Hawkins and Jeremy Cameron.”
7th forward (bench): Aaron Naughton
“I did pick him last year to be the All-Australian centre half-forward. He may not get that, but he won’t be far away.”
Regarding the selection of midfielder Petracca at half-forward, Jenkins said: “We’ve got the typical (messages) that ‘Petracca is a midfielder’.
“Well, he is, but we’ve got to be realistic that the selection panel, they’re going to pick a midfielder forward. You’ve just got to concede the fact that there’ll be a midfielder who plays forward.”
Julian De Stoop’s All-Australian forwards:
HF: Christian Petracca (MEL) / Jeremy Cameron (GEE) / Shai Bolton (RIC)
“Petracca is the number one score involvement and number one goal assist player in the competition. He’s only kicked 12 goals, which is a surprise to me.
“Jeremy Cameron is an absolute lock for centre half-forward and on the other half-forward stuff, Shai Bolton.”
FF: Tyson Stengle (GEE) / Tom Hawkins (GEE) / Charlie Curnow (CAR)
“It was a battle in two between Charlie Cameron and Tyson Stengle. Stengle has had far more score involvements than Charlie and only four less goals.
“Tom Hawkins at full-forward. Big score involvements and 42 goals. Charlie Curnow in the other forward pocket.”
7th forward (bench): Liam Baker
“It just came to me, Liam Baker. He’s on the bench as my seventh forward. Forward pressure, versatile, he’s a very good player.”
Jenkins, De Stoop and Andrew Gaze floated more names, with some help from the listeners, that could be considered for the All-Australian forward line.
See the consideration list below:
Tom Lynch
Izak Rankine
Mabior Chol
Mitch Lewis
Toby Greene
Zac Bailey
Bayley Fritsch

Really, no Lynch?
-
Hawkins has not been better than Lynch this year.
-
The thing that Hawkins does better than any other kpf is his goal assists and score involvements. Tom ended up kicking more goals than him but think Hawkins is well clear and AFL#1 in score involvements and goal assists. That’s not to say Lynchy doesn’t have him in other areas i.e. contested marks and marks inside 50 which he is both AFL#1 I believe. I just think that’s what they’ll point to when they inevitably go with curnow, Hawkins and Cameron as the kpf in the AA team this year.
-
More goals/game than curnow or Cameron too tho TK
-
Yeah but another easy cop out they use is that he missed too many games
-
Yeah but another easy cop out they use is that he missed too many games
Lids was AA with 18 games in a year. Very doable! Plus I'm biased
-
Rioli should be in, Saad showing his true colours today.
-
So in the squad of 40 I think D.Rioli, Lynch, Bolton and Prestia (debatable) get in. In the actual 22 I think bolts is our only lock and they’ll probably overlook Rioli and lynch.

What would Josh Jenkins know?
-
There was a Coleman year Riewoldt had where he. Didn’t make the AA based on not having enough impact from memory?
I would make the same argument of lynch over curnow for that reason. Pure and simple Lynch has delivered more this year in critical moments when compared to curnow.
-
Yup one of his Coleman years, Riewoldt was laughably not included in the AA team however I don’t think it’s been done since then.
I don’t think that argument will work in Tom’s favour as Charlie has more score involvements and goal assists.

Not as ridiculous as rising star

Talk that there might be a first team and second team named this year NBA style which would explain why they increased the squad from the usual 40 to 44.
They asked kane Cornes on footy classified tonight and he said he couldn’t confirm it.

I don’t think they’ll name 4 kpfs even if 1 is on the bench. Could be wrong but I don’t think they’ve had that many in the past.
-
Petracca on the HFF yep lol. Kicked 19.29 this year pffft
-
KEY FORWARDS (according to Luke Hodge)
“I could not split them.
“I’ve looked at goals and goal assists … it was that even I went down to top eight teams and who had impact against top eight teams.
“I’ll start at centre half-forward, I’ve gone for (Tom) Lynch.
“Played 18 games, kicked 60 goals, so he was only four off the Coleman playing four less games than (Charlie) Curnow.
“You go back and look at what he did against top eight teams, he averaged 3.8 goals a game against top eight teams.
“You can split them, one will be full-forward, one will be forward pocket. I’ve gone for (Tom) Hawkins and Curnow and unfortunately left out (Jeremy) Cameron.

I'd take Lynch over Curnow any day.
Petracca at HF lol. He's a good midfielder but '22 has been underwhelming compared to '21 and he's a terrible shot for goal IMO.
-
The final side just highlights why I don't care
Hawkins captain?
Petracca as a HFF?
What a joke
-
contrived & laughable.
-
Deliberately knock a player out off the ball and cop the longest suspension for the year.
AFL: Here you go, have an All-Australian jacket.
::)
How the hell did Rozee make the AA team? He had an ordinary year :huh3. Looks like the AFL wanted one token player from the SA sides.
The AA side should be held after the finals anyway. That's how you determine the best players. We play for premierships not H/A points.
-
Half back line is three guys from bottom 10 sides...
Blicavs, Hawkins captain, Stewart missing 5 games and sniping a player, Chris Scott must have been selector.
-
Selectors lazily just looking at their fantasy footy favourites and their stats rather than those that actually impact heavily on games. That's why Tiger players are continually overlooked even during our premiership years ::). It's still a disgrace that Floss has never been AA.
The selectors didn't care about who played in what actual position either. Wingmen have once again become keys to how modern footy is played yet not a single genuine wingman was picked.

Saad would be a better player if he didn’t bounce the footy every two strides, ridiculous!
I’d have Rioli before Saad if I was picking a team.
-
Lynch omission is crazy.

Foxfooty.com.au assesses and ranks the ‘unlucky 22’ that didn’t make the 2022 All-Australian team.
1. James Sicily
2. Tom Lynch (Richmond)
Selectors opted for Tom Hawkins, Jeremy Cameron and Charlie Curnow as the key forwards over Lynch, who can consider himself unlucky. He finished second on the Coleman Medal table, but probably would’ve topped it if he’d had a full season as he only managed 18 games. Lynch was ranked first for both contested marks and goals per game.
3. Marcus Bontempelli
4. Jarrod Witts
5. Tom Barrass
6. Rory Laird
7. Charlie Cameron
8. Angus Brayshaw
9. Daniel Rioli (Richmond)
Was pipped by Adam Saad and Jack Sinclair for a half-back stuff gig. Was one of the great stories of Richmond’s season as he continued to reinvent himself as a rebounding defender.

Lynch managed less than 17 games.
One with 62% game time and a hammy, another with 7% game time and a hammy.
Factoring those in he probably would have kicked 75-80 goals had he played all year.
