WHY WESTERN BULLDOGS CAN END RICHMOND’S SEASON ON SATURDAY NIGHT
By Hugh stuff
SEN
5 April 2022
Matthew Lloyd is prepared to put a line through Richmond's chances in 2022 if the Dogs beat them on Saturday night.
Western Bulldogs were back to their best in their Round 3 win over Sydney, and with last year’s Grand Finalists finding form, Lloyd is predicting them to beat a Richmond side that “lacks depth”.
Richmond has had a disappointing start to the year, losing to Carlton in Round 1 by 25 points while conceding 10 straight goals in a second-half blitz from St Kilda in their 33-point Round 3 loss.
Richmond has been the benchmark of the competition in the last five years, but the former Essendon great is forecasting them to “crash hard” this year.
“The Doggies got their first win on the weekend, and I think they can end Richmond’s season on Thursday night,” Lloyd said on Sportsday.
“I just want to see what the Dogs can do after winning that game, I thought they got their mojo back.
“I think the way they’ve (Richmond) lost, Carlton blew them away in the last quarter, it was seven goals to one and they were beaten up, it was 22 to 2 inside 50s in that quarter.
“On the weekend, conceding 60 points in a row against St Kilda in a quarter and a half.
“They lack depth, I’ve spoken about this a bit but when you’re a premiership side and you’ve been up for so long, when you crash, you crash hard.
“We’ve seen it with Hawthorn, we’ve seen it with Brisbane and I think it’s now with Richmond, I liked their pre-season so I snuck them in for eighth spot, I’m now concerned that they’ll miss the eight on what I’m seeing so far.”

Richmond v Western Bulldogs Preview
Lachlan Geleit
SEN
7 April 2022
Not many would’ve predicted these teams to be 1-2 after three rounds, but here we are, after both sides stumbled out of the blocks in 2022.
Like the Dogs, Richmond looked second-rate in their their two losses, but both teams have also shown that their best can match it with just about anyone.
The Bulldogs entered this year with loftier expectations than the Tigers and they’ll be desperate to even the ledger and make a tilt for the premiership, while Richmond will have to go the long road to finals if they start 1-3.
Last time out it was Richmond who got the win head-to-head, taking care of the Dogs by 22 points at the MCG in Round 7 last year, while they’ve also won three of the last four.
Despite this, the Bulldogs will be licking their lips knowing they’re coming up against a depleted Richmond midfield with the likes of Dustin Martin, Kane Lambert and Dion Prestia out - and that’s where this battle can be won by Luke Beveridge’s men.
While this looks like as close as you’ll get to a 50-50 on paper, the Bulldogs should simply have too much ball winning ability at the source via the likes of Jack Macrae, Marcus Bontempelli, Bailey Smith and Josh Dunkley, allowing them to dictate field position and generate more scoring opportunities.
It’s a must-win for both teams, but it’ll be the Dogs here, just.
Tip: Western Bulldogs by 10 points.

Western Bulldogs coach Luke Beveridge backs his players to overcome size disadvantage against Richmond
Marc McGowan
HeraldSun
April 8, 2022 - 2:42PM
Luke Beveridge will bank on the size of the fight in his Dogs to conquer Richmond’s “land of the giants” at the MCG on Saturday night.
Alex Keath (hamstring) and Zaine Cordy (concussion) are the Western Bulldogs’ latest tall timber cut down by injury, paving the way for ex-Hawk Tim O’Brien to make his club debut.
The Tigers selected eight players standing at least 192cm compared to the Bulldogs’ seven, with five of those standing 196cm or taller, but that’s only part of the story.
Ryan Gardner, O’Brien, Jamarra Ugle-Hagan and Aaron Naughton are the Dogs’ only key-position players in that group, while Tim English will go head-to-head in the ruck with Toby Nankervis.
Tall midfielders Marcus Bontempelli, Jack Macrae and Josh Dunkley will provide support but Beveridge said medium-sized defenders Bailey Williams, Bailey Dale, Ed Richards and Taylor Duryea must step up.
“It would have exacerbated it a little bit more if they kept Ivan Soldo in the team as well,” Beveridge said.
“On paper, there’s a theoretical advantage (for Richmond) in the air, so we’ll need pressure on the footy and to have wise heads going inside our 50, and make sure that we’re finding our teammates in space to advantage.”
The Tigers lost co-captain Dylan Grimes (hamstring) – replacing him with Ben Miller – but regained star duo Jack Riewoldt and Dion Prestia as they try to level their win-loss ledger and dump the Dogs in a 1-3 hole.
Beveridge’s men were favoured in their past two meetings with Richmond but went down both times, something he is well aware of.
“Backs to the wall, there are not many teams or clubs better in the competition,” he said.
“Our challenge will be to find that intensity that’s going to at least be able to match the ‘Tiges’ at the start of the game and be ready for an arm wrestle.”
Beveridge confirmed Bontempelli (shoulder/ankle) was good to go thanks to the nine-day break between games and that Tom Liberatore would receive more midfield time as his match fitness increased.
There were also encouraging signs in the past fortnight from No.1 draft pick Ugle-Hagan, but his coach refuted suggestions Richmond’s defence was ripe for the picking without Grimes.
“The challenge is more going to be for our medium-smalls and how we play that aerial part of the game, where we need the boys to compete in the air and at least bring some of those balls to ground,” Beveridge said.
“I think Aaron and Marra will do that reasonably well (but) I don’t anticipate that this Richmond backline is in any sort of state that we’re just going to rip them apart.
“There’s some very, very good players down there, but hopefully we get enough supply to give ourselves a chance in the first instance.”

Some really bad signs in the first 10 minutes. Can’t get our hands on the ball and when we do we have zero options.
-
Same undisciplined bullshite that was in the 2s today
-
Who's our tackling coach. VFL and AFL players are disgraceful.
-
Umps on fire in 1st :clapping
Tells a Dog's player to stand, they step backwards and he calls play on :banghead
-
How's that #20 ducking his head into the Riewoldt tackle fmd.
Dogs are the worst at it and the AFL needs to act if they want to reduce concussions.
-
And seriously what does Tom Lynch have to do to get a free?
Perhaps change his name to Tom Hawkins :help
-
Our midfield is shot. Im liking Dow and Gibcus and Miller are holding up but our midfield is for the tip at the moment.
-
Hilarious.
Back to back goals from 50m penalties for the stand rule.
First was legit but the second one was wonderful seeing Prestia suck them in with a fake hand pass haha.
-
Bulldogs have been trying to exploit the stand rule by moving back off the mark. It's come back to bite them. Stupid rule!which doesn't belong in our game.
-
Pickett has been very good.
-
The stand rule showing it is the worst rule ever
-
Rioli excellent at half back
-
Rioli, Dow, Gibcus, Short, Pickett all good. Graham finding some form too
-
Pickett has been very good.
Bog so far. Some have had more possession but he has had the greatest effect on the ground.
-
Jack needed to nail that last shot >:(
-
Castagna having an absolute shocker.
-
Let’s go lads!!
Dow gas been good again!
-
Fumble fumble fumble, then panic blind handballs and tap ons.
-
Jack needed to nail that last shot >:(
Like that?
-
Jack needed to nail that last shot >:(
Like that?
Hahahahahaha.
That must hurt them so much at 6.17 lol
-
Jack needed to nail that last shot >:(
Like that?
Yep like that ;D
-
So wrong. Those that said we users not for were wrong too.
-
Lots to like tonight
Gibcus - have really nailed our first pick here.
Miller to be retained IMO. Shown plenty of athleticism, composure and overall ability.
Dow - had my doubts but looks like he'll make it.
Prestia - getting through a game and looking good.
Rioli - looking good across HBF, very clean.
Ralph - see Dow.
-
The difference is Dion Persia. The most important part of in our machine.
-
The difference is Dion Persia. The most important part of in our machine.
:thumbsup
-
Yes Dion is hugely important. If he stays fit, we can compete with the best.
Good signs from some kids today.
-
Dow is a natural footballer in and under type.
-
Really impressed with Miller tonight, looks the goods! The new Dylan Grimes!
Loved Marlion tonight too & the overall effort from all. :clapping
-
Great win.
I hope they dedicate a whole training session to just hand balling and ground ball gets. Still super fumbly and missing 2m handballs.
-
Marlon, Short and Rioli coming of the back stuff. Not as bad as some bad judges think.
-
What a difference speed, tackling & shepherding makes....even Hugo got stuck in... :shh

Top win given it looked like it was going to be ugly early on when the Dogs were running rampant with their midfield spread. Fortunately, they didn't put it on the scoreboard and we made them pay across the rest of the game.
Great win.
I hope they dedicate a whole training session to just hand balling and ground ball gets. Still super fumbly and missing 2m handballs.
x2.
While there was a lot to like in terms of our intensity, pressure and harassing the opposition, our small forwards are still out of position when the ball hits the deck inside F50. We got away with it when Lynch, Jack and co. were marking it but too often the ball was cleared easily by the Dogs at ground level inside our F50.
-
great win, they stuck tough, showed some sublime moments and some frustrating ones. The dogs are a tight unit so it was a good solid win. Running out the four quarters, not dropping their heads THAT is more like the Tigers that win premierships. New players are looking great and are just gonna get better drilled and fitter. Good times on the horizon.

Report Card: Round 4

RICHMOND
The Tigers’ topsy-turvy start to 2022 continued on Saturday night, storming over the top of an inaccurate Bulldogs outfit. After they were thumped in the second half of both of their losses to Carlton and St Kilda, Damien Hardwick’s men flipped the script to kick seven of the last eight goals of the game and record a 38-point win over the Dogs. The Tigers got their season back on track with the victory, leveling their campaign at 2-2.
In the votes
Shai Bolton’s rise as a player is awesome to watch. He was at his damaging and efficient best against the Dogs, with 10 of his 20 disposals ending up in a Tigers score – including an early goal of the year contender – while he also had 13 contested possessions and five clearances. Tom Lynch kicked four goals, while Jayden Short (35 disposals) and Dion Prestia (30) found plenty of the footy. Marlion Pickett also played a cracker, booting one foal from 20 disposals, eight contested possessions and seven marks, while he had a kicking efficiency of 93 per cent.
Room for improvement
The Tigers lost the disposal (-47), clearance (-12) and inside 50 (-9) counts. If the Bulldogs (7.19) had kicked straight, it could’ve been a different story. Ultimately, the Tigers (15.9) made the most of their opportunities.

Misses and i away for weekend only saw game last night. Must admit gave us no chance going in. Still concerns me we lost c/p Clearances by so much and thus lost the I/50 count.
Still have issues with some players but i suppose if you win those issues are covered up.

Got to love our tackling pressure when it's on song like it was against the Dogs.
The Club even made a tackling highlights video:

Pressure Tigers back in business
By Callum Twomey
afl.com.au
11 April 2022
Key forward Tom Lynch said a focus had been getting back to their high-pressure form after dropping two games in the opening three rounds.
"They've been a great side for a long period of time and we knew we had to be at our best to try and match them. We focused on bringing that pressure as they've got elite ball-users all over the ground. At times they got away from us but we stuck at it and managed to turn it our way," Lynch told AFL.com.au.
The Tigers set up a 24-point lead at three-quarter time against the Dogs and were no chance of letting it slip after final-quarter fadeouts against Carlton in round one and St Kilda in round three.
"Last week and round one we played some pretty good footy, three quarters we felt like, and we dropped away in the last quarters when the opposition got a hold of us and we didn't capitalise on our opportunities, which was the game.
"We spoke about it during the week that we were playing OK footy, we weren't playing as bad as the results were but we lost to two good teams in St Kilda and Carlton so we knew we'd played some pretty good opposition," Lynch said.

Foxsports' Power Rankings:
7. RICHMOND (2-2, 104.5%)
Last week’s ranking: 10
The margin flattered the Tigers slightly but Saturday night’s exciting win over the Bulldogs was still a massive tick for this group, suggesting there’s plenty of fight in the AFL’s most recent dynasty side. Going equal in the contested possession count with the Dogs’ powerful midfield group is a positive sign. We’re still waiting to see some level of consistency before getting back on the Richmond bandwagon - after all, this was just their fourth win in their last 14 games - but in a year with an enormous middle class, this group is certainly good enough to return to the finals.
On Champion Data’s Expected Score, the margin should’ve been six goals closer (Tigers 80, Bulldogs 78), so the Dogs were unlucky in both directions.
