Collingwood replaced Richmond in the eight with the victory, which sets the stage for an important clash against the Tigers next Saturday at the MCG.
McRae, who served his apprenticeship at Punt Road as a senior assistant to Damien Hardwick, is mindful the Tigers are likely to be strengthened by the return of Dustin Martin.
He joked, with tongue firmly planted in cheek, about the timing of Martin’s return given the Brownlow medallist’s brilliance. “That is awesome,” he said.
McRae noted Richmond, who tested reigning premiers Melbourne before trouncing West Coast in Perth, are in strong form and said he has a lot of respect for his former colleagues.
“I am not sitting here without my time there. There are a lot of people who are still there who I love. Players included. But we have a job to do,” McRae said.

Power Rankings after Round 7
Max Laughton
Foxsports
3 May 2022
11. RICHMOND (3-4, 114.4%)
Last week’s ranking: 11
We’ve said it before and it’s worth repeating: the truly great teams demolish bad opposition. It’s telling, and while this year’s version of Richmond isn’t a truly great side, it’s still a pretty good one. They did themselves a major favour by growing their percentage so much against a woeful West Coast outfit, as it feels pretty clear that the Tigers are fighting for a spot in the eight, meaning percentage could matter a lot. With six teams at 5-2 and Geelong just behind them, for now it feels like the bottom ten teams are all racing to knock Collingwood out of the eight. So lose to the Pies this Saturday, and suddenly the Tigers will be two games out of the finals mix - it’s an important game. (And exclusive to Fox Footy!)
7. COLLINGWOOD (4-3, 110.3%)
Last week’s ranking: 7
Sunday’s win was pure ‘good team gets the job done against worse team at home’ areas - for the second week in a row - and if the Magpies make it three in a row, they might even open up a two-game gap over the pack chasing their spot in the eight. We have Collingwood seventh on current form above Carlton, but the Blues’ win-loss advantage (and a couple of easier games coming up) means the Pies are still the shakiest member of the current top eight. Of the chasing pack, the Bulldogs have the pedigree (get it?), the Tigers have percentage and the slightly-less-recent pedigree, and the Hawks have looked pretty dangerous too, so there are certainly contenders to ruin a dream first season for Craig McRae. But knock off Richmond and the finals dream is well and truly alive.

I'd back us in the wet. Slow them down a bit
-
Wet? Get on the phone to A. Miles and J. Townsend.
"G'day boys, I know it's short notice, but how do ya feel about being this week's homecoming heroes? Here's ya boots--the presentation's out in the middle now. It lasts 120 minutes usually."

Is this the quietest build up to a Richmond vs Collingwood game?
Haven't heard boo in the media about the game despite a top 8 spot being on the line.

Four players away from @CollingwoodFC today due to the flu, after gastro issues last week. Nick Daicos, Brayden Maynard, Taylor Adams and Reef McInnes. Club hopeful they will all face Richmond on Saturday.

Richmond easily locked the ball inside forward 50 against a dismal West Coast side, but will face a much tougher challenge against the Pies. Collingwood are ranked third for the least opponent inside 50s per game - frustrating their opponent into mistakes. Last week the Pies managed four goals from their defensive half in just a quarter of football - to highlight the strength of their defensive run when the ball does eventually go in. “I think that’s too easy,” Fox Footy’s David King said. Richmond will need to find a way inside forward 50 and lock it in if they are to get the four points.

THE CERTAINTIES FOR THE REST OF ROUND 8
Andrew Slevison
SEN

Richmond v Collingwood
Rioli to have 15+ disposals and a combination of 5+ rebound/inside 50s
Daniel Rioli has been in solid form for Richmond this season.
Playing a vital role off half-back, Rioli has averaged 19.3 disposals as well as 3.4 rebound 50s and 3 inside 50s, using his dash out of defence to rebound as well as set up attacking forays.
The Magpies are no strangers to getting the ball forward, evidenced by the fact they currently hold the fifth best inside 50 average per game (55.7) in the competition.
That suggests Rioli may get some opportunities in the Tigers defence and with the form he’s in, 15 or more disposals and a combination of 5 or more rebound/inside 50s is very possible for the triple premiership player.
Adams to pick up 20+ disposals and lay 4+ tackles
Taylor Adams loves getting down and dirty and that could be the case on Saturday if the forecast rain in Melbourne does in fact come.
In 2022 he is averaging 22.3 disposals and 5.2 tackles, and if it does happen to be wet, he will be very busy in and around the stoppage.
He has a pretty good recent record against the Tigers, with 31 touches and 10 tackles last season, 21 and 5 in 2020 (shortened game), 36 and 5 in the 2018 prelim, 30 and 7 in the home and away meeting that year and 25 and 7 in 2017.
Adams has been impacted by the flu this week, but he’s been passed fit to play and should be picking up at least 20 touches and laying four or more tackles.

Hardwick, McRae ready to match wits in AFL
Anna Harrington
AAP
Fri, 6 May 2022 1:12PM
Former colleagues Damien Hardwick and Craig McRae will embrace the opportunity to face off as opposing AFL senior coaches for the first time when Richmond take on Collingwood.
McRae worked as Richmond assistant and VFL coach under Hardwick from 2016 to 2021, including winning the 2019 VFL premiership, then had a stint at Hawthorn before landing the Collingwood head coach role.
But don't expect any banter or cheeky texts in the build-up to Saturday's match at the MCG.
"We've always been very, very funny like that. The week leading in and the week after we probably steer away," Hardwick said.
"But they're going really, really well. I think Fly (McRae) is a terrific young coach, and he's got Leppa (Justin Leppitsch) there as his assistant as well.
"So they've certainly got a good understanding of what we do and how we operate but in fairness so have we on the way they're going about it.
"With both sides playing a similar style of game, we look at our our metrics and KPIs and they're very similar the way Collingwood are playing.
"He's got a good blend of experience and youth, exciting youth as well.
"He's got them playing what we feel is a great brand of footy and a sustainable brand of footy so they're only going to learn and get better."
Richmond were bolstered ahead of the clash by Jayden Short re-signing until the end of 2027, a day after the Tigers confirmed superstar Dustin Martin would return to action.
That was negated somewhat by losing important defender Nick Vlastuin (illness) and midfielder Dion Prestia (illness), who withdrew on Friday, with Marlion Pickett and Rhyan Mansell recalled.
McRae reminisced fondly on his time at Richmond but stressed the Magpies needed to be ready for the Tigers to be fired up off the back of regaining Martin and former skipper Trent Cotchin.
"I can't speak highly enough of my time there. I'm just so grateful for the opportunity," he said.
"The five years were really special and I've got some great memories from that and clearly I'm not here without that opportunity.
"They played extremely well against West Coast.
"If you look at their line-up, there's a lot of premiership players back in this week and I know them well enough to know they're gonna bring their best.
"We've just got to make sure we're ready for what comes."
Collingwood will hope Nick Daicos, Taylor Adams and Brayden Maynard all prove their fitness after missing Thursday's training with the flu.
The Magpies have recalled youngsters Ollie Henry and Trent Bianco.

Tigers, Pies in old-school AFL blockbuster
Anna Harrington
AAP
Sat, 7 May 2022
Richmond's AFL clash with Collingwood has all the ingredients of an old-school blockbuster.
Two fierce rivals: tick. A Saturday afternoon first bounce at the MCG: tick. Plenty at stake: tick. One of the game's biggest names making his AFL return: tick.
Damien Hardwick's Tigers sit 3-4 while his former assistant Craig McRae has Collingwood sitting 4-3 ahead of the game, which also marks Richmond dynamo Dustin Martin's return.
"They're all big, obviously. I think the games become more challenging and more even as the season goes on," Hardwick said.
"But it is a game where we're probably evenly placed, these sides.
"So I know people will call it like an eight-point game, as such.
"But to get back to level pegging's really, really important.
"We think if we get our process right and we execute roles, we're going to be OK, but we're coming up against a really well-coached, well-drilled side that is improving every week.
"So the challenges are going to be there. They have a great blend of experience and youth so they're going to be a challenge to beat."
Hardwick believed there was plenty to come from Richmond, who also welcome back Trent Cotchin but are without Nick Vlastuin and Dion Prestia through illness.
"Where we are now is probably where we are. We feel we can play a hell of a lot better.
"Some sides out there are going really, really well. We're probably below that at the moment. So we've got some work to do."

Wet games are about territory. Just keep it simple and aim to turn the match into a forward half game which suits the conditions as well as our gamestyle. Important to grab an early lead if it's not raining early on. Very hard to play catch up footy in the wet.
ps. Please Dimma don't let Sidebottom run around unmanned :P.
-
Lynch honestly how the F do you miss that you giraffe
-
The amount of times Castagna gets in the way in a marking contest. Soldo had that !
-
Our big guys have cost us 3 goals. Lynch and Jack peeweak misses and Balta fmd what a horrendous turnover.
-
It there was a stat for late goals each quarter we would win it.
-
It there was a stat for late goals each quarter we would win it.
Never has truer words been typed :banghead
-
We're not the same selfless team that was so successful. Castagna has photos on people for sure. Our key forwards are unprofessional. Theres a few issues here to deal with.
-
That’s why he’s in the side Craw
-
That’s why claw !
-
All it takes is some forward pressure ( from Rioli ) and our game looks completely different. Plays every game going forward for me !
-
We should be 8 goals up here
-
Getting smashed turning it over.
Danger signs here. We've switched off as we do most weeks.
Simple errors like slipping over. Back to one goal lead
-
Embarrassing last 10 minutes
-
Tom Lynch my goodness
-
Having fun with a few young Collingwood imposters in M51 getting on the tinnies haha.
-
That’s why he’s in the side Craw
That’s why claw !
Doubt it will be acknowledge :help
-
Maurice deserves a goal or two
-
Maurice has made huge strides. Once we get sonsie, banks, brown and clarke in the side everyone will see the future. Its pretty exciting.
-
3 goals in a row to them. Only 28 points. Should be looking to bury these teams.
-
Make that 22 with 4 minutes left. This is laughable
-
Disappointing to concede a few junk time goals but otherwise great performance from the boys across all lines.
-
Its a good win guys. A really good win.
-
29 points beating a mortal enemy , happy days
-
I was wrecked from work and slept most afternoon. Geez how did we win? How was dusty’s return? Can I get The forum summary of tthe game as opposed to a dodgy AFL.com report which is just half arsed narratives revolving around stats please?
-
Disappointed giving awy junk time goals. Should have been a 45-60pt win by I'll take it.
Lynch could have had 7, Jack 4 at least.
-
We played well. Collingwood are a good team. We got opened up a few times but most importantly our tackle pressure was there and we look hungry. Good win to build off
-
Okay like that and we can win the next 3 going into the bye
-
Bar a few games like Freo at Marvel I think we're a chance to win most of the rest of we stay fit and hungry.
Cats at the G, Lions at the G, Swans at SCG maybe danger games.
The rest are all very winnable.
-

Positives:
- Thought it was our best game of the year in terms of gamestyle. We were on top in general play for most of the match and should have won by 10+ goals.
- Forward half pressure (thanks mostly to Maurice).
- Our transition from defence to attack was very good today.
- Lynch is in awesome form (minus the early game yips).
- Cotch was brilliant today in traffic. Clean as and his vision to spot an open teammate was spot on.
Negatives:
- Centre clearances. Should have won this easily given the hugely lop-sided hitout count but our post-clearance work still isn't up to scratch and the Pies were a lot cleaner with their exits and we gave up soft goals.
- Still too many unforced schoolboy U10s errors that cost us soft goals and kept the Pies in the game. Fumbling at crucial moments, getting first hands only to cough it up, sloppy disposal under no physical pressure and missed gettable set shots. It's why we didn't win by 10+ goals when we should have. It was frustrating to see us do the hard stuff well while screwing up straightforward elements. It's why we've fallen back to being a middle of the road side.
ps. Dusty was solid IMV. As a first game back after missing 6 weeks his output stats were better than expected. He was bit rusty at times though where his decision making was off (I can recall 3 turnovers). He'll be better for the run. Credit to Jack for dishing one off to Dusty. That goal boosted Dusty's confidence. Dusty was much more influential after that goal.

Yep that's holding us back our skills in general to sloppy at times we drop our level to low and it costs us bigtime.
-
The fumbling is a major concern and we can’t be doing this if we make finals.
Also team hand-balling skills are way below standard and hopefully improves as the season progresses.
What has improved is our forward 50 entries :clapping

AFL Report Card: Round 8
Ben Waterworth, David Zita, Ben Cotton and Catherine Healey
Fox Sports
May 9th, 2022
RICHMOND
Jason Dunstall labelled it an “old style” Richmond game and that’s what it was - relentless pressure in the forward half and scores from turnover aplenty. Dustin Martin’s return was the story heading in, but by half-time it was all about Tom Lynch, who put in one of the more extraordinary first half performances in recent memory. It was a classy Richmond outfit that looks to be hitting its straps and still has Dion Prestia and Nick Vlastuin to return next week. Good signs after a shaky start to the year.
In the votes
Tom Lynch, take a bow. A whopping 18 disposals and five goals in the first half, with a couple of other golden opportunities going begging. It was a sensational, match-winning performance from the key forward. Jack Graham and Jayden Short racked up the footy, with Short continuing his stint in the midfield. Trent Cotchin was great on return, while it was awesome to see Dustin Martin back and kicking goals.
Room for improvement
They never really put Collingwood away until the end of the game despite having several chances to do so. Again, dominance in the hitouts didn’t necessarily translate to clearance dominance even though they came out on top in that department. More than a couple of easy goals went begging throughout the match - sometimes Shai Bolton moves too quickly for his own good!
