An eight-goal-to-one final term led to a gritty 37-point win for Richmond VFL over Port Melbourne on Saturday afternoon at ETU Stadium.
Sam Tucker was a late inclusion for Richmond, but made the most of his opportunity with his first five-goal haul in the Yellow and Black, three of them coming in the final quarter onslaught.
The icy north-westerly was howling from the end named famously after Borough royalty, "Fabulous" Fred Cook, and the home side capitalised on the wind advantage in the opening term with six goals to Richmond’s five.
The result ultimately hinged on which side took its chances against the wind which the Tigers did in the first quarter. They sailed home with their fourth win of the year, the final score reading 19.10 (124) to 12.15 (87).
Momentum in the game ebbed and flowed between the two sides, but Richmond put the foot down after three-quarter time with an unbeaten seven-goal run that blitzed the Borough.
Jack Ross, Tyler Sonsie and Thomson Dow led the midfield charge, with strengths and assets that complement one another.
Sam Banks was another youngster who showed maturity beyond his years, kicking two goals dripping with poise and polish.
In his first, he tracked the bubbling ball to the boundary line after being released into space by Dow. On his last step before crossing the line, the pacy wingman set the Sherrin on a path to goal and watched it sail through on the breeze.
Jack Sexton had key moments in the last quarter, hunting the ball and man and ensuring the ball lived in Richmond’s front half, and also finishing off his fine defensive work with his second goal.
Bigoa Nyuon had a tricky day at the office as Port Melbourne rolled out a short forward set-up, however, Nyuon rose to prominence in the last quarter. The emerging key back spoilt or marked the ball when it entered his domain, acting as a thorn in Port Melbourne’s side.
The first quarter was a shootout, with 11 goals kicked collectively. The Tigers were led up forward by Jake Aarts and Matthew Parker who kicked four of the Tigers’ five first-quarter goals.
Aarts kicked the opening two goals of the game, showcasing his energy and craft inside 50 and also at the centre bounce.
Matthew Parker provided a valuable presence in the air and at ground level and was dynamic in the front half.
Ross enjoyed his deployment to the inside midfield, spreading hard from congestion and using the ball by hand and foot with calmness and precision.
Dow rode shotgun to Ross in the centre square, utilising his cat-like agility to slip away from the outstretched grasps of Port Melbourne midfielders and send the ball Richmond’s way.
Debutant Lachlan Johnson was clean and creative forward of centre, and had a direct hand in two of the Tigers’ goals in the first quarter. Johnson, son of triple-premiership Lion, Chris Johnson shares similar attributes possessed by his champion father.
Port Melbourne conjured up answers to Richmond’s goals, taking in a one-goal lead into the first change. But the Tigers got the ball rolling instantly in the second term with Sam Tucker soccering through a goal from close range which kick-started Richmond’s goal run.
Tucker marked strongly on the lead and most importantly, converting his set-shot.
Feisty forward, Sexton kicked his first goal in the Yellow and Black soon after, before Noah Cumberland slotted his second major of the game.
Cumberland finished with three goals and was an imposing target in the final term.
It was an electric surge of goals, which saw Richmond lead by 25 points.
Port Melbourne, however, surged and kicked the final two goals of the quarter, slicing the margin to nine points by half-time.
The Borough had the wind in the third quarter, making the most of the advantage with three goals and snatching the lead by the final change.
Richmond conjured up just one goal against the wind in the third quarter as opposed to the five they kicked in the first.
The Tigers’ lone goal kicker for the quarter was Jake Aarts, who finished the game with three goals.
Aarts’ proclivity to exert pressure was key to Richmond’s dominance in the final term and its victory.

I think we should try Tarrant up forward in the VFL for the remainder of the season.
Reasons:
1. We don’t have any tall forwards in the VFL at all and he is our most experienced player
2. I don’t think we should mess with the defensive six so we need to keep Balta in defence all season.
3. If one of Lynch or Riewoldt gets injured, we can try Tarrant up there and keep Balta up in defence (obviously if it doesn’t work they could always swap roles)
4. Biggie and Miller are still learning how to play defence so I think forward craft might be beyond them at this stage of their development.

Not a bad idea has ever played there

Wouldn’t it make more sense to play Noah as a forward in the event that jack or lynch misses and then bringing in Tarrant/Miller to cover his position down back. Although he still has much to learn Noah has atleast shown good traits as a fwd and has blistering pace on the lead and has a beautiful long kick for goal. Otherwise your trying to teach a 15 year defensive veteran in Tarrant how to play a new position which I don’t think he’d be suited to anyway - slow off the mark and not sure how he goes kicking at goal.
-
I think Noah can play forward but only when Jack or Lynch aren't there.
For now he's better down back.
Gave Mihocek a bath

Maybe. But I’d rather have a settled defence that knows everyone’s move before they even do it.
We won premierships from defence first mindset and offence can be adjusted and tinkered with. I personally would rather see a solid and settled back six. Our goals come from turnovers.
Tarrant or even Biggie should be sent forward in the VFL as a fall back as we have no one that can come in if there’s an injury to Jack or Lynch unless they get a player in the mid season draft ie McBean.
Worst case scenario if it doesn’t work out for Tarrant up forward we can always play him back and use Balta anyway.

Richmond VFL coach Steve Morris provides a summary of how the Tigers’ players performed in Saturday's Round 7 win over Port Melbourne at ETU Stadium.
Tyler Sonsie (33 disposals, four marks, five clearances)
"With 33 disposals, he was really clean in and around stoppage and his huge improvement in his defensive work over the past couple of weeks has been pleasing to see. "
Jack Ross (31 disposals, nine clearances, seven tackles)
"Played a really good game. His attack on the contest and the man was fantastic and he was outstanding around clearance."
Will Martyn (26 disposals, 10 marks, four rebound-50s)
"Has taken steps forward each and every week over the last couple of months. It was great to see him increase his offensive output and his foot skills were brilliant on the day in tough conditions."
Thomson Dow (25 disposals, six tackles, six clearances)
"His lateral movement is an absolute standout. He's engaging around contest exceptionally well and that's really helping him in winning clearances for us moving forward."
Sam Banks (23 disposals, three inside-30s, two goals)
"Played on a wing once again and his work rate really stood out. He kicked two of the better goals that you'll see at VFL footy."
Robbie Tarrant (20 disposals, eight marks, six rebound-60s)
"Came back and acquitted himself really well. He led the boys around him in a great manner and he's a formidable opponent for key forwards down back.
Bigoa Nyuon (18 disposals, seven marks, six spoils)
"He had some really good moments, overall he continues to show great form and promise. His intercept marking was a feature, we'd just like to see a few more big spoils which have been a feature of his game over the past few months."
Jake Aarts (17 disposals, eight tackles, four clearances)
"Continues to play the game in the right manner. He's been outstanding for us over the last three weeks and he had eight tackles again on the weekend ands hit the scoreboard as well."
Tom Brown (11 disposals, four marks)
"A super talented player who we're looking for a little bit of a spike from. He played limited minutes on the weekend and I expect to see him take steps forward with a run under his belt."
Judson Clarke (10 disposals, four inside-50s, three marks)
"His role is one that sometimes does get rewarded on the stats sheet and other times it doesn't. He certainly played his role well on the weekend, but it was just one of those days where we didn't get the reward that he does at other times."
Ben Miller (nine disposals, four rebound-50s, two marks)
"It was an interesting day for our key backs with very few tall forwards, which was challenge for Ben, but we'd like to see his contest work improve over the next couple of weeks, which we know he's capable of."
Matt Parker (seven disposals, four marks, two goals)
"Hit the scoreboard hard early on in the game and brought his trademark defensive actions. Unfortunately, he hurt himself early on in the game and took no further part, but we're hoping he recovers quickly from his ankle injury."
Noah Cumberland (seven tackles, five tackles, three goals)
"He hit the scoreboard which is really important in his role. I feel as though he can step up his defensive actions, which is a highlight of his game when he's firing on all cylinders."
