Hawthorn v Richmond Preview

Seb Mottram
SEN
12 May 2022

The Hawks and Tigers bring two very different form lines into their clash fixtured for Saturday afternoon at the MCG.

Richmond are coming off two strong wins over the past fortnight, having smashed West Coast to the tune of 109 points before backing it up again when beating Collingwood in Dustin Martin’s return game.

Damien Hardwick’s troops have been able to move the ball with increased fluency in their recent wins, and Tom Lynch’s resurgence up forward is a prime example of Richmond getting some momentum into their season.

It’s an opposite record to the Hawks, who started the year well but have faltered in recent weeks, despite playing some solid footy.

They’ve lost three on the trot, the most disappointing coming against an undermanned Bombers side last week as Sam Mitchell’s men faltered in the last quarter.

When at their best, both sides are high scorers but have been prone to leaking big scores, while the makeup across the middle of the ground is also similar for the two teams in relying on a team brand of football.

Hawthorn hasn’t been that far off the pace in recent weeks, but the Tigers are on a roll and it will take an upset to derail their momentum in what should be a high-scoring clash.

Tip: Richmond by 11 points.

Aside from Razor barracking for Hawthorn that gifted them at least two goals  ::), we've dished up slop and been defensively poor on transition. All 4 goals to Hawthorn from turnovers (including thanks to Razor). Hawks hurting us on the rebound. Half-forwards and mids not working hard enough.

Title: Re: Richmond vs Hawthorn @ the MCG --- Round 9, 2022

Defenders need to wake up in the second half. Much better from the halfway mark of that qtr onwards but they are allowing too many fwd50 marks in wet weather conditions too. Even with hawks sleek transition it’s not like our key defenders wernt in position to spoil most of their marks, just not manning up or being caught flat footed.
Title: Re: Richmond vs Hawthorn @ the MCG --- Round 9, 2022
Post by: mightytiges on May 14, 2022, 03:08:01 PM
Half-time

Richmond    3.3     9.5-59
Hawthorn    4.4     8.5-53

Goals: Lynch 2, Riewoldt 2, Bolton, Graham, Martin, Nankervis, Soldo.

Woke up in the last 15 minutes, lifted our intensity and started winning the contests which turned the match into a forward half game.

Bolton lead the way. Just clean while everyone else around him was fumbling. Prestia important too.

Still a weird game for us. Strong in areas we're usually not so (centre clearances & stoppages) but ordinary in regards to the turnover/rebound game which is normally our one wood.

I don’t normally complain about the umps but this is pretty ridiculous.
Be interesting to watch this game on tv and see the close ups. In just seems very obviously one way umpiring as I stand here.
They get a free and are awarded a fifty for us playing on but the exactly same things happens with hawthorn and no 50.
Head highs. Throws. Dropping the balls not going our way at all but they are getting every 50/50 decision. It’s pretty frustrating.

It's the ones we don't get paid that is the problem Willy.

Hawk throws.

Lynch whacked high on the wing and Razor doesn't pay it. Lynch wonders why. Hello 50m for "dissent". Teams should not be penalised 50m for ump errors.

Nank is continually copping it over the shoulder at throw-ins/ball-ups yet no free.

Hawk players drop the ball in the tackle no free yet Dusty (rightly) is pinged for the same thing.

All we ask for is consistency and fairness for both teams.

Gets the smother, recovers from the shove and nails it.

Still had a gut full of him but the effort was 100% there.

Baker has almost been as bad as Castagna. Biggie has had some good moments but needs a lot of work. Id definately drop George.

Surely can’t be serious? A couple of silly moments aside thought he was excellent. Think he lead the team in contested possessions and intercept possessions.

Very inconsistent performance. Very good mixed with the very bad. Defensive transition was poor today aside from the 3rd qtr. Key backs were outmarked too often. At the other end goalkicking was ordinary too. Missed a heap of gettable set shots and shots on the run that kept Hawthorn in it.

Also a bit arrogant today. Didn't turn up for the first 1.5 qtrs. Then switched on, then off and then on again when needed. We can't do that against a top side.

We got little to nothing out of our small fwds today.

MRJ was good with his chasing and pressure but needs to get involved more offensively and be cleaner when he does.

Honestly didn’t know George was playing first half was absolutely anonymous. Much more involved second half (not hard) but still surely his form warrants a spell in the 2’s.

Baker every week does stupid things. Every week. Hes drinking his own bathwater. Needs to go back to the twos for a week or two to learn some discipline. As for George hes got photos on someone.. wrve got really good kids in the twos and this bloke is taking games of our kids.

Disagree with Baker big time. I think you’ll find most players do silly things every week but out of all the weeks you’d call for him to be dropped this isn’t one of them. His best game of the season and one of our best today.

Defensively yes.

Offensively non existent although his defence does lead to good offence for us. Just wasn’t involved in general play when we had the ball and was very fumbly when he was near - dropped chest mark as an example.

And I would think whether we like it or not, the above is the reason he is in the team

3 brilliant efforts that included the sealer

He was very poor today, extremely poor but that 30 seconds was vital

He's a gun. Really has the mental and physical tools to play above his size. I remember him giving Lynch a good run for his money despite conceding 12cm and 12kg.

Would be keen as.
