Without spearhead Lynch up forward. Hardwick said he could try a “mosquito fleet” of smaller players close to goal, including superstar Dustin Martin, having seen Carlton do that with great effect against the Swans last Friday.
“We looked at Carlton last week and they played a smaller-type forward line and it worked well for them,” Hardwick said.
“They have given us a little bit of a template.”

Tigers ponder Lynch replacement options
By Anna Harrington
AAP
25 May 2022
Richmond will ponder fielding a smaller forward line as they attempt to manoeuvre through possibly two AFL games without spearhead Tom Lynch.
The in-form key forward suffered a hamstring strain in Saturday’s win over Essendon and is set to miss games against Sydney and Port Adelaide, with the bye in between, before returning against Carlton.
Coach Damien Hardwick was contemplating whether to deploy a smaller forward line or to throw ruckman Ivan Soldo forward to support Jack Riewoldt against Sydney on Friday night.
Going small could on the cards, with Hardwick pointing to Carlton’s success in using Charlie Curnow as the sole big man against Sydney.
Hardwick flagged Sydney Stack, fresh off three goals in the VFL, Noah Cumberland and young tall Samson Ryan as potential options.
“It (our forward line structure) is a great question, one we’re still grappling with at the moment,” he said.
“We’ll have a good look at training today, what it looks like – whether Soldo plays more forward or we go a smaller-type forward line with a (Dustin) Martin (or Shai) Bolton-type also.
“We’ve got some options, we’ve just got to work our way through what’s going to give us the best opportunity to win this week against the Swans.
“It could be (a smaller forward line) and that’s what we’re working our way through.
“Pressure is certainly evident, we look at Carlton last week, they played a smaller-type forward line and it worked well for them. So they’ve given us a little bit of a template to look out for as well.”

Please not Ryan. He's a ruck 100%
-
Just reading some news articles and apparently it's a season defining game for Sydney after 3/4 losses.
I tell you every week it seems we come up against the media pumping up the other team.
-
Yep the focus is on the Swans and most of the footy media is tipping them.

Round 11 Preview: Sydney v Richmond
Alex Zaia
SEN
26 May 2022
Sydney and Richmond meet in a Friday night clash that will shape the top eight come the end of the round.
The Tigers have come a long way since their last visit to the SCG.
Damien Hardwick’s job was hanging by a thread following a 113-point loss to the Swans in the final round of 2016.
Since that horror evening, Hardwick has guided Richmond to three flags and has his side in the mix for another finals campaign in 2022.
Four consecutive wins over West Coast, Collingwood, Hawthorn and Essendon has the Tigers in eighth spot and just a game outside the top four.
The seventh-placed Swans should provide a sterner test, although they’ve lost three of their last four games, including two defeats on their home deck.
In a quirky stat, both clubs share the same 6-4 win-loss record and identical percentages of 120.4.
Richmond will be without Tom Lynch (hamstring) and Kane Lambert (hip) for the club’s trip to the harbour city, while Jack Graham could return from a toe injury. Marlion Pickett is available after serving his one-match ban.
Sydney is at close to full strength with only Josh Kennedy (hamstring) and Harry Cunningham (abdominal tendon) currently on the sidelines.
The Tigers enter the Round 11 match in better form as they gun for a fifth straight win.
Tip: Richmond by 12 points.

In-form Tigers wary of Swans in AFL
By Anna Harrington
AAP
May 26 2022
Richmond coach Damien Hardwick has dismissed suggestions Sydney are vulnerable at the SCG ahead of their crunch AFL clash.
The Swans have won three and lost two games at their home ground this season and face a tough task against an in-form Richmond, who have won four games on the bounce.
"All I know is they're a really good side that if we allow them to play their way and control the footy, we're going to be in an enormous amount of trouble," Hardwick told reporters.
"They gave us an incredible touch-up here round three last year at the G and we allowed them to play their game.
"When they use the ball really, really well they're damaging, they get forward, they've got some really damaging forwards up there as well.
"So to me, they're a really good, well-drilled, well-coached footy side that is incredibly hard to beat on their home patch."
Hardwick is confident though Richmond's game style can stack up on the different SCG dimensions.
"I hope so (it suits us). It is a challenging ground. It's a little bit wider and a little bit shorter," he said.
"We spoke about it at match committee and end of the day, our training ground is relatively similar in size so we're used to that patch of grass.
"So we'll work our way through it and with good pressure, good contest work, we should be okay."
Richmond and Sydney are both sitting at 6-4 ahead of Friday's game, with the Tigers looking to cover the losses of Tom Lynch (hamstring) and Kane Lambert (hip) and further strengthen their position.
"This is a really important game for us and our footy club, especially going into the bye," Hardwick said.
"Everyone wants to win going into the bye, they want to have a nice enjoyable, six or seven days' break.
"But what we do know is playing away versus a Sydney side that haven't been quite at their best the last three to four weeks is going to be a tough ask.
"But we're up to the challenge and we'll just put our best foot forward and hopefully get the result."

does anyone know what section the visitors usually sit at the SCG? I haven't been to the ground in about 10 years.
Organized a work day up there so il head to the game.

This is it ....most important game of the year. Win this and I'm a believer.
-
I'm heading up too
Well I was going but a certain virus has just got in the way :banghead
-
I don't think we can do it without Lynch but I am encouraged by Carlton's win with mostly Curnow as their only tall. Just don't think we have the midfield grunt to compensate unlike Blues.
Big game tonight. Might even say it's an 8 point game.

MUST WIN GAME

THE 4 CERTAINTIES FOR SYDNEY VERSUS RICHMOND
By Hugh Fitzpatrick and Andrew Slevison
SEN
27 May 2022
Labelling something a ‘certainty’ in any sport is fraught with danger.
But we’ll attempt to find some anyway.
Here is what we consider certainties for Friday night’s clash between Sydney and Richmond:
Mills to have 20+ disposals
Callum Mills will have 20 or more disposals on Friday night.
Sydney will be desperate to get back on the winners' list having lost three of their last four games, and being their co-captain, Mills will be the one leading from the front.
He is averaging 26.5 disposals across 10 games this season and should continue that trend here.
Having accumulated 20+ possessions in his last three appearances against Richmond, Mills should consider it easy pickings again.
Lloyd to have 15 or more kicks
Jake Lloyd will accumulate 15 or more kicks with ease on Friday night.
The 28-year-old is a known ball gatherer, his 2022 season has seen him average 24.3 disposals, 16.9 of them being kicks at a disposal efficiency of 81.7%.
In his last four matches against the Tigers, Lloyd has accumulated more than 15 kicks, averaging a massive 22.75 in that time.
Such is his ability to cut up the opposition with his kick, he should get plenty of looks at it, especially as he often takes a lot of kick-ins which helps this prediction.
Vlastuin to have 15+ disposals, 4+ marks, 3+ rebound 50s
Nick Vlastuin has been in good form since returning from injury in Round 5.
The defender is averaging 23 disposals, 8.4 marks and 6.2 rebound 50s across five matches in 2022, and is yet to drop under 20 touches in a game.
In his last three against the Swans he has averaged 19 disposals, eight marks and 3.6 rebound 50s.
So on Friday night at the SCG, in the form that he’s in, Vlastuin should hit the 15-disposal, four-mark and three-rebound 50 threshold.
Nankervis to win hit-out battle and pick up 12+ disposals
Former Swan Toby Nankervis has been one of Richmond’s most consistent players this season, particularly of late.
In three of his last five outings, the co-captain has reached the 20-disposal mark on three occasions, while winning the hit-out battle in his last four straight.
With Tom Hickey out of Sydney’s side, it leaves Pete Ladhams and Sam Reid to do the ruck work, and neither are renowned for being overly prolific hit-out winners.
In a crunch clash, expect Nankervis to continue his recent form and take care of business in the ruck.
He should win the hit-out battle and we can also add at least 12 disposals into the mix.

Pickett a late out sick. So he misses out on wearing his designed jumper again.
Hugo comes in.
Cumberland is the sub.
LATE CHANGES
Sydney: Nick Blakey replaced in selected side by Colin O’Riordan
Richmond: Marlion Pickett (illness) replaced in selected side by Hugo Ralphsmith
MEDICAL SUBS
Sydney: Robbie Fox
Richmond: Noah Cumberland
https://www.afl.com.au/news/768265/late-changes-galore-tiger-handed-medi-sub-debut-key-swan-out-live-from-7-50pm-aest
-
Don't mind seeing Blakey not playing. The fewer fast linebreakers they have the better. Our small forwards need to apply pressure on their half-backs so we turn it into a forward half game and they don't have space to hurt us on the rebound like they did in round 3 last year.
The key to playing the smaller SCG is to remember there's no need for a CHF and that the team that controls the corridor wins. Obviously taking our chances (unlike last week) is important too.
A win tonight would be massive :pray :gotigers.
-
Here we go. Umps already in the game gifting the Swans a goal ::).
Got to love those 10m passes paid as marks too ::).
-
Didn’t take long :help

Floss having a shocker in terms of decision making so far :P.
-
Haven't started well
All over the shop
Already missing Lynch
-
Vlaustin can sure have some brain fades.
-
Now Baker with the poor kick not to his teammate's advantage turns it over.
Poor defending gifts them an uncontested mark 25 out :banghead.
Wake up Tiges and get you brains into gear!
-
We getting smashed in marking.
-
Dusty goals after an excellent spot up by Shedda

Sheds to Dusty 45 out. Plays on and slams it home :gotigers

-
What the hell is wrong with Vlastuin. Having an absolute shocker
-
Pathetic Tiges! :banghead
Just allowed them to get the ball moving forward and kick the goal. That's schoolboy stuff.
-
Ralphy going great
-
Ross very lucky that kick wasn't turned over.
Ended up good for us as Hugo ran onto it and copped a high tackle on the F50. Nice kick. Goal! :gotigers
Rich 3.0-18
Syd 3.3-21
-
Great goal by Hugo
But kick by Jack Ross was crap
-
Cotch hands off the ground to Sheds again out of the middle and Bolton playing in front marks it on F50. Passes it off to Dan Rioli 35 out. Goal! :gotigers

We settled in the 2nd half of the qtr
But have gifted them some soft goals
Our start was awful
-
I'm out for a burger and can't wait.
Does it look like we have their measure???
Had the better of the last 10 mins winning the centre clearances but too many brainfades allowed the Swans to have opportunities in their forward half. Did our best in the last couple of minutes to gift them a goal.
At times we look to be playing on an ice rink given how many times we've slipped over or fumbled the ball.
-
Leading possies:
Edwards 8
Dusty 8
Prestia 7
Cotch 6
Grimes 5
D.Rioli 5
Sheds backing up last week. Back in some form.
Grimes, Tarrant and Gibcus doing well so far in defence.
-
Poor kick inside 50 by Short but Graham nails Rowbottom. Kick from 50 drops short. Graham with another good tackle this time closer to goal. Kicks it :gotigers.
Rich 6.0-36
Syd 3.4-22
-
LOL. Good for us but what a joke of a rule dissent is.
-
Smart team forward play. Cotch hits up Jack 40 out. Goal! :gotigers

Syd 3.5-23
-
Ross to the hot spot. Sheds front and square crumbs the goal :gotigers
Rich 8.2-50

Junior beats two and kicks the goal :gotigers
Rich 9.2-56
Syd 3.5-23
-
Maurice! 1 kick = 1 goal! ;D
-
Jack Graham you idiot
-
Two dumb brainfades gifts them a goal when they couldn't buy one :banghead. Graham needless throw by the boundary on the wing and Bolts not giving the ball back :facepalm.
-
Shai Bolton is a very good player but he gives away too many 50's
That was disgraceful. Rule is clear. 2 weeks in row he does something really stupid
-
Very lucky
-
Another brainfade free off the ball (Hugo) :banghead.
Lucky Reid misses.
56 - 31
-
Shorty kicks a ripper
Gee we needed that
-
Short from 55 goals on the run to steady us :gotigers
Rich 10.2-62
Syd 4.7-31
-
Giving them too many easy centre clearances in the last 10 mins. That was a training drill goal.
62 - 37
-
Hello? Where was the advantage?
-
Dumb George. You didn't have advantage against two opponents.
Need senior players with cool heads.
-
Forward stoppage crumbing goal to Bolts :gotigers.
Rich 11.2-68
Syd 5.7-37
-
Reckon Buddy is in strife
Got sucked in big time
-
Too easy out of the centre
As per normal we give away a soft goal in the last minute of the qtr

Another easy centre clearance :banghead
Swans have won 8 of the last 9 clearances. Mids slacking off defensively :banghead.

We are missing Lambert imho.
-
Gibcus on Buddy for the first half! Who woulda thunk it? Gibby has done really well so far, hope he gets help if he needs it.
-
George 0 touches in a half. Surely we have somebody better?
-
George didn't have an official disposal in the whole first half.

We delivered our normal 5-10 minutes of pooness towards the end of the quarter.
C'mon lads bring it home.
-
George 0 touches in a half. Surely we have somebody better?
You must have missed what Richo said about George in the 1st half
-
Punched forward from the centre bounce. Hugo to Short who nails it from 55 :gotigers.
Rich 12.2-74
Syd 6.7-43
-
These brainfades :banghead
Soldo dumb free.
Tarrant missed the ball.
:banghead
-
George 0 touches in a half. Surely we have somebody better?
You must have missed what Richo said about George in the 1st half
Didn't miss it. I just think we must have somebody that can put on pressure and still get the ball sometimes.
-
Great smother by Bakes.
-
"Prohibitive contact" = BS! ::)
-
That was just dumb by Dusty
Easy clearance they go Coast to Coast
-
:banghead
Our small forwards aren't front and centre for those long kicks and the Swans are just sweeping it out :banghead.
Brainless footy this quarter :banghead.
-
"Prohibitive contact" = BS! ::)
What is this game becoming. What utter rubbish
-
Since when was a little bump against the oppo player was called “prohibitive contact” ?
When did this happen?
Is it even a rule?
-
Brave by Cotch.
Our small and half forwards are freaking lazy this qtr.
-
Since when was a little bump against the oppo player was called “prohibitive contact” ?
When did this happen?
Is it even a rule?
It most definitely a rule
Has been all season
A stupid one but one nonetheless
-
Poor kick by Gibbo but that should have been 50 against Buddy for being in the protective 10m area.
-
Poor option by MRJ
So bloody costly
5 goals up and now only 2 :banghead
-
Geez we've been dumb and sloppy his qtr. Just gifted them back into the game :banghead.
-
We've lost all dare here. Got to be bold
-
Since when was a little bump against the oppo player was called “prohibitive contact” ?
When did this happen?
Is it even a rule?
It most definitely a rule
Has been all season
A stupid one but one nonetheless
And they wonder why the crowds are down :rollin
-
Another brainfade :banghead
-
Gee as soon as I tune in we are dropping the game.
Loose swans everywhere etc.
-
Lot of panic
And now absolute stupidity from the co captain :banghead
Pathetic Tigers
-
What a BS call against Nank fmd
-
And another mindless brainfade :banghead.
I can handle the opposition being better than us but not this brainless undisciplined crap :banghead.
-
What a BS call against Nank fmd
It was there. Total brainfade.
-
Were gone mentally here. Late goals every week.
Stupid by the captain nank.
-
They’ve ruined the game. It’s too bloody soft now. Ridiculous :banghead :banghead
-
What a BS call against Nank fmd
No right call
If it was the other way we'd be demanding it
It was pure stupidity on Nank's behalf
Incredibly poor leadership
-
Netball
-
What a BS call against Nank fmd
No right call
If it was the other way we'd be demanding it
It was pure stupidity on Nank's behalf
Incredibly poor leadership
Should have tried to smother let's be honest
-
I cant see us holding on. Hope Im wrong but Swans seem to getting on top.
-
3/4 time
Richmond 5.0 11.2 12.4-76
Sydney 3.4 6.7 10.10-70
Goals: Edwards 2, Ralphsmith 2, Short 2, Bolton, Graham, Martin, Riewoldt, D.Rioli, M.Rioli.
Disgrace quarter. Dropped off our workrate and pressure and committed every brainfade in the book :banghead.
Ladhams is rucking alone against both Nank and Soldo and yet he is a key reason the Swans are winning the clearances. Just not freaking good enough. It all start in the middle.
Dimma needs to give them a rocket. Defence is doing okay but those upfield need a kick up the backside.
-
Reminds me of Carlton/Saints games
-
They’ve ruined the game. It’s too bloody soft now. Ridiculous :banghead :banghead
If prohibited contact was supposed to gut punches and the like not minor bumps or niggling off the ball. Ridiculous over adjudication.
They are making this game unwatchable.
-
Nank goes the man and gives away another dumb free. Baker goes the ball and gets a great smother… always smother instead of bump. That was really bad from
Nank
-
Hugo out of the centre and hits up Jack 45 out. Misses.
77 - 70
-
We really miss Lynch.
-
Prestia long. Bolton held but the ball bounces through for a goal anyway :gotigers
Geez we needed that one.
Rich 13.5-83
Syd 10.10-70
-
No one had a clue what was going but Prestia goals
-
Gibcus made a huge blue there
Buddy goals
-
Omg they let them score so easily
-
Soldo you don't go on the mark at HB. Just allowed Rampy to run past him and gain an extra 20m.
Then add poor defending.
-
First option Maurice.
-
MRJ should have had a shot
-
Good forward pressure turns it over 20 out. Graham snaps the goal :gotigers
Rich 14.6-90
Syd 11.10-76
-
Ross first option. You're not Dusty.
Gifts them another easy centre clearance and goal :banghead
-
Jack Ross back doing Jack Ross things :banghead
Rinse and repeat :banghead
-
Buddy just not missing this half. Gibcus too green for him I'd be trying Grimes.
-
Where is our sweeper at centre bounces? That loose ball is for the sweeper to clean up. You don't get sucked into the honey pot.
-
Ross back to his old tricks. :banghead
-
Jack Ross back doing Jack Ross things :banghead
Rinse and repeat :banghead
X2
-
Ross isn’t the answer
That simple
-
More panic
-
What the @#$% was that defending on the goal line?
-
Ugh pathetic on the line there.
I reckon that was the game.
-
Ross isn’t the answer
That simple
Get him off.
-
:banghead :banghead :banghead
How the hell was he allowed to mark and kick that goal
3 against one FFs
Defence 101 punch it through
-
Are they certain that ball wasn’t already over the line before mills grabbed it?
I’d like to see the replay
-
Done I think. Just too many turnovers and too many players with not enough of the footy.
-
We are in massive strife
The last 5 minutes has been embarrassing
-
Midfield being indecently assaulted
-
Out centre bounces :facepalm.
Another easy centre clearance out the front and goal to them :banghead
-
:help
-
Soldo has had a shocker. That high ball is for you to contest Ivan.
-
:banghead :banghead :banghead
-
Gibcus certainly won't be getting a rising star nod this week.
Embarrassing play there. 7 points.
Done
-
That Swan goal started from Soldo at HB/wing expecting a shorter teammate to take the contest.
-
Pathetic, disgraceful and just stupid
Baker dumb, Rioli shocking
Just disgraceful
-
Need a miracle
-
Disgusted
-
2.8 since half-time ::)
-
Dusty, Bolton, Edwards.
All gettable goals.
All night bombing it in high and long without Lynch.
-
Game over
Just pathetic
-
If you dont put the swans away you pay the price. Sern thid before.
-
Gave it up, no good lifting the effort now, should have worked harder to keep our lead
-
Really bad from Grimes there. Both he and Bank have done stupid things tonight.
-
It’s all over. Stupid stupid stupid stupid.
Don’t they know You can do these things anymore?
Are we the only real that has no clue of the rules?
It’s brainless. It’s like they want to lose.
-
Our 'captains' have been so undisciplined tonight and cost us goals
-
More poor discipline by the other captain
-
We've made Ladhams look like Simon Madden tonight :banghead.
Another two brainfades. Especially the 50.
Tonight was there for the taking and we've just coughed it up. Worst than the Blues and Saints losses as we've lost tonight via all our brainfades rather than the Swans win it.
-
Rioli & Castagna gotta be dropped after this.
I've had enough
-
see what he did to baker, he trapped his arm and pulled him forward as he fell forward and got a bs free. Very sly
-
Gibcus goals
-
Floss to Gibbo 40 out who has been moved forward. Goal! :gotigers
His first goal as a Tiger too :clapping
Rich 15.10-100
Syd 16.10-106
-
Rioli & Castagna gotta be dropped after this.
I've had enough
MRJ - I just can’t see it at all
-
What a waste
-
We should be so embarrassed by this result
-
"Commonsense"
Sorry that's 50!
-
Omg did you hear the umpire?
'he couldn't have heard it (the siren)'
Please explain
-
Deserved that loss. If that was us we would have been screaming if they gave a 50 for that.
-
Guarantee if that's us they get 50
-
Yes the umpire has got that so wrong but we should never have been in that position
-
so there really is two sets of rules one for us and one for everyone else
-
Omg did you hear the umpire?
'he couldn't have heard it (the siren)'
Please explain
Didn’t hear that excuse last week when Bolton kicked the goal
-
This has 2021 west coast game written all over it.
-
We were 14 points up
In our premiership years we don't lose from there :banghead

We should be so embarrassed by this result
Yep only got ourselves to blame as we had plenty of chances to win it anyway but a ridiculous number of brainfades cost us. Even Buddy just said they were lucky.
-
I didn’t expect to win this game. To see the pressure and tackling in the first half was amazing. Best it’s been all year IMO. Makes the loss that much worse. To know we could’ve won. We had chances. Dusty missed goal in the last minutes… we aren’t the 4qtr team we used to be but I still think there is improvement to come. I think our old list really struggles to run out games against top sides. Each week I try to focus on the positives and how the young guys go… gibcus will learn from tonight.
-
That was 50 every day of the week given how they are now strictly interpretating the rules. You can't kick the ball out of the ground after a free. The game wasn't over.
Gutless umpire to scared to pay it in front of the home crowd.
-
Great contest with too much umpire involvement favouring us earlier and them later.
We should have won regardless. Utterly disappointing
-

And top of the brain fade brigade are our co-captains. They directly cost us 2 goals. There's the game
-
Another fold. 4 of the 5 games we have lost have been folds when we should have won. Don't have the answer it's just seems to we lose all out footy brains when the other team gets a run. Panic maybe. We also played as if we had Lynch down there. Stupid really.

I’ve been a supporter of nank but his aggression obviously gets the best of him. Too often goes the man instead of the ball. Cotchin in his prime went hard but went hard at the ball
-
Poor loss. Lot of players down tonight.

stuffin disgraceful those 2 tonight.
Throw in Shai as well. Sick to the death of his lack of discipline.
Completely unacceptable that loss as we threw it away just like the 2 other losses earlier in the year.
-
3 match winning leads squandered this year .
-
Wait a minute!
Does that mean every time we had a goal disallowed this season because we kicked the ball after a free kick it wasn’t 50 metres because we didn’t know?
-
Also want a special mention for Ivan Soldo who think he’s playing soccer. Never play in the seniors again. He is honestly no where near the level of an AFL footballer. Can he run directly at another tall bloke for a small portion of the game to give nank a rest? Yes. Other than that anything you get out of him is a bonus. Convince me otherwise. He is stuffin useless.
-
Definitely start by saying we are so undisciplined it’s just not funny. Dimma must address this ASAP.
The non 50 at the end is an embarrassing error by the umpires. Never have i heard them say “use common sense”. The same situation happens all the time during general play, and it’s 50 every time. The game has never been in such a bad state :banghead
-
We were 14 points up
In our premiership years we don't lose from there :banghead
We had enough of the ball and chances inside 50 in the last quarter to win that. All their goals came easily from fewer opportunities while we butchered and wasted most of our clearances and F50 chances. 12.2 first half; 3.8 plus a couple gettable shots OOTF second half. That's the game. Bad kicking is bad footy.
Rot started late second quarter. 31 points up with all the momentum, Swans with just 3 goals and they didn't look like scoring. Graham low % throw then Bolton not giving the ball back gifted Sydney 50 and a goal. You don't give an sucker a even break. Gave them a sniff and they took it. It was the first of so many undisciplined brainfades. You don't win games against decent sides let alone interstate by being continually stupid. We got away with our brainfades against the likes of Essendon but we didn't learn to cut them out and it's bitten us on the backside tonight.
-
We get nutted by the umps yes, but we don’t do ourselves any favours and I’m sick of it. We need to pull our heads in :banghead
-
I think Gibcus up forward was a good move he’s got the athleticism to at least get the ball to ground.
He did ok on Buddy but watching it on tv it always looked like eventually Buddy was going to get some.
I would’ve had Gibcus up forward from the beginning. We don’t have forwards in reserve but we have an abundance of defenders. We need to allow one to be moved especially this week considering Reiwoldt was up against.
Not the best coaching but a good decision in the end but way too late IMO

This is a great call. I thought the same thing. We had em and let them back in.

You better get the 2017 GF out and have a listen. Stevic says "a bit of common sense" when he called for a ball up after a kick was touched off the boot, Vlastuin marked it but it was called play on (correctly), Vlastuin tackled. Crows wanted a free didn't get one
-
We handed them that game on a glittering silver platter. Umps were awful but nobody to blame but ourselves.
-
Bad kicking bad footy agree.
Got beaten in coaches box. Once Mills went behind the ball we got slaughtered in terms of efficient F50 entries. Had no answer. Gibcus on Buddy was arrogant with 2 All Aus defenders. Used Bolton and Martin poorly and wasted. Soldo decision was a stinker. What other team would out your 2nd ruck as a full-time forward. Huge issues up forward.
Apart from that first half pressure was excellent but threw it away in 2nd half. Similar to Carlton game, once they shifted the magnets we had no answer.
-
We lost this game!
How many more times are we going to give frees away in the D50?
Surely our experience defenders know this?
How many matches have we lost now after leading by 4-6 goals?
Exactly like the West Coast match last year in 2021.
Will this break our year?
2 weeks to sit on this loss which WILL hurt.
3 out on the fulls tonight - 2 from Martin and 1 from Bolton.
If we had ANY OTHER TALL FORWARD that wasn’t Soldo, that would’ve helped!
Soldo did nothing.
Horrible loss and we have to blame ourselves.
Nankervis and Grimes giving away 50s that result in goals. Horrible.
60 free kicks - just so good to watch this stop, start game. Soon it might be like NFL.
many things cost us tonight in particular the last 10 minutes of the 3rd quarter.
Tarrant, fresh airs a punch and Reid kicks a goal.
Think there was a free kick goal there.
Nankervis DUMB down the field free kick.
We gave them goals to get back in the match.
Sydney kicked 6.0 in last
we kicked 4.8 and 1 OOTF
Once again, how many times have we lost a match while being 5-6 goals in front?
Horrible.

2017 is ancient history in umpire decision terms.
We have a sample size of what’s happening and how the game is adjudicated this season and this season we are being screwed by the umps especially in 50’s. We haven’t been given any grace this season and goals have been disallowed.
The umpire said and it was clearly heard on tv, “I think it’s 50 to Prestia”. He then put his fingers to his ear and whoever it is that talks to them overruled his first instincts and the rule wasn’t observed.

You missed my point. The Machine said he had never heard them say "use common sense "
All I was pointing out was it has happened before. That's all
The umpires got it wrong. It was not over ruled by someone upstairs. Stevic said no 50. They got it wrong
But don't blame that for the loss.
Ill-discipline cost us the game.
33 points up you don't lose, simple as that
-
I just hope this is not a repeat of the Eagles game last year.
This should sting the club deeply.
Interesting to see which way this goes.
-
Not blaming that for the loss WP. Our ball use was rubbish.
I’m just venting that we don’t get the decisions the same way that have been adjudicated against us. It’s bloody frustrating.
The AFL will just make up a reason it’s different to every 50 decision we’ve had that’s the same.
The media won’t show the decisions and 50’s against us for exactly the same thing.
-
AFL will back the umps in because they're all about supporting them this year
-
Also need to be realistic if the 50 was paid having Prestia take a shot from about 40m out on a 45deg angle isn't a good place to be.
Would have to fake hammy tightness or something. Give it away..
-
Even Dimma said in his presser that ill- discipline cost us the game
-
Grimes and Nankervis what were you thinking.
The Umpires hate us are you dumb dumbs?
Any chance to give them a goal...
-
That loss is on us simple as that second half we couldn't kick a goal and wasted so many opportunities and played dumb footy at times no composure or smarts senior players didn't stand up.To many brain fades and undisciplined frees.Forward line was not existent second half.Coughed up 3 games in winnable positions.
Gibcus on Buddy kid battled hard Tarrant for me is the let down that's why he was signed.
-
Watching the game I thought Rowbottom was Sydney’s best player but I guess you can’t go past 5 goals by the Buddy and a dominant last quarter.
-
Damn a win would have been so good heading into the bye especially with most of the injured boys due back straight after.
Felt like we threw it away with so dumb dumb moves:
- the nankervis 50 for hit on ladhams
- the grimes 50 for shoving buddy off the ball
- the wicks goal on the line with nank and Gibcus right there to spoil.
- the damn triple comedy of errors which led to the joe the goose goal on the line.
Actually thought we played quite well for the most part. Pressure and tackling was there, mids played well, scoring was up even without lynch.
Lynch was a massive out especially in the second half where we more or less resorted to bombing it inside 50 at every chance. Jack had 2-3 defenders on him each time and just couldn’t clunk any of them. With lynch I think we win that game and win it comfortably.
Ah well something to build on for the second half of the season.

All of these I could have just headbutted a wall.
Terrible leadership from our captains. Nank should have tried to smother, Grimes just idiotic, the 3rd one there was disgracefully weak defending and the last one was... you know, the moment we died tonight.

Last one just needed some Benny hill music playing in the background.

Our discipline has been an issue for the last 2 years.
Club needs to fix it by setting an example of players by dropping them. Won't change until this happens

Pretty sure that's why caddy got dropped/career ended lol

According to Dimma we gave up 5 goals from free kicks.

This feeling like we're in complete control (Blues, Saints, Swans) and losing is going to take some getting used. 20-30 points up in 3rd quarters and looking like we're cruising to crumpling into a panicky heap. It's something that young sides do, I think it's not so much age but that we're very unfit. Geelongs old guys are still going ok.
-
On Fox Footy, they spoke about the Swans pushing Mills back as a 7th defender and Gulden running up and down the fat side from the Swans' forward line to the wing to support Mills. So Sydney in the 2nd half were playing a 7-6-5 set-up.
Buckley was surprised we didn't push a wingman onto Mills to even up the numbers forward of the ball and then use a defender to mind Gulden.
Garry Lyon said the Swans can only play a 7th defender if they're still able to win it in the middle with Mills not there. Pointed out that Warner and Rowbottom had 27 contested possies between them.

Warner was picked up by Sydney at pick 39 in 2019, already streets ahead of any of our young mids, seems that unless we recruit mids via top 10 picks we cant seem to find them with later picks, our recruiters have been good in recent years but this is one area I have to say they have missed the boat.

Bolton, Graham, Lambert, Short.
But yes there were a few lean years here and there.
-
Turning point no doubt was just when Graham stupidly flicked the ball play in play then Shai gave away 50. We had them absolutely on toast at that point
-
Turning point was when Jack marked on 50 and hand balled to Dusty who kicked it out on the full.
-
Lots of turning points last night. Making good choices under pressure used to be our one wood. We have the yips big time in that area of the game.

Buddy suspended for a week by the MRO for striking Cotch.
The Match Review Officer (MRO) graded Franklin's contact as intentional, low impact and high contact, resulting in a one-game suspension.

Good.
Wanker be is.
Good kick though...
-
He is an excellent set shot these days. But what I don’t understand is that in a day of age where the umpire will call play on anywhere else on the field just for thinking about stepping off your line, Buddy is allowed to run an arc as big as the 50m line when having a set shot for goal. Another hugely inconsistent and hypocritical rule.
-
Last night there were a few calls of play on when our players stepped backwards. :rollin

Great call. WTF was that by the umpires.

Bitterly disappointing loss. Failed to put them away in the third quarter. If had would have been game over.

Exactly! I've always hated Buddy's arc & I really thought the stand rule was going to do away with it ... stupid me eh? It is just so wrong for one player to get personalized rules with large servings of tolerance, while we get waved to play on for going back on the mark! :huh

AFL Report Card: Round 11
David Zita, Catherine Healey, Ben Waterworth and Ben Cotton
Foxsports
30 May 2022
RICHMOND
The Tigers were desperately close to getting over the line against Sydney, but at the end of the day, regardless of the controversy in the final moments, they let a five-goal lead slip and only had themselves to blame. There are still plenty of positives to take out of the game given it was in their control for the most part and they’re in good shape heading into the bye, but it is one they could look at as one that got away. Given how tight the race for the bottom spots in the top eight currently is, those four points could prove huge come season’s end.
In the votes
Dion Prestia was very good once again while Jayden Short hit the scoreboard with a couple of goals. Toby Nankervis didn’t exactly beat Peter Ladhams but both had impact and Nankervis finished with 21 disposals. Jack Graham, Shane Edwards and Hugo Ralphsmith all kicked a couple of goals.
Room for improvement
Clearly giving up a five-goal lead is not good, even in this season’s momentum-heavy season. Josh Gibcus was given a huge task on Buddy Franklin and was performing it quite well for a half, but Buddy’s class shone through as he willed the Swans back into the contest before ultimately having Dylan Grimes thrown onto him. Jack Riewoldt looked to struggle without Tom Lynch by his side. They gave up too many clumsy free kicks by their coach’s own admission.
