I need to stop my negativity. This is a game we absolutely should be expecting to win. If it was in Adelaide they would be expecting the same.

Can't see how we could possibly lose this game. Port struggled to beat the Bummers at home and got smashed by the Cats the week before. If we bring our effort from the past 3 or 4 weeks (with the exception of the 4th qtr v Swans), we should be a shoe in.

I'd doubt there will be any trouble finding a seat given it's a Thursday night in winter against an interstate club with few members in Victoria.

For some reason when we play Port in Melbourne not often we struggle.

Richmond v Port Adelaide preview
Laurence Rosen
SEN
8 June 2022
Thursday night football is back and with it, comes a clash which promises plenty of intrigue.
Both Richmond and Port Adelaide are fresh coming off their mid-season bye and enter the opening game of Round 13 on the back of contrasting fortunes in their last game – Richmond went down to Sydney in a nailbiter at the SCG, while the Power beat Essendon last time out.
Ken Hinkley’s side will relish another chance to play at the MCG, after their close to Carlton at the home of football earlier in the season.
Richmond will regain Noah Balta, Marlion Pickett and Kane Lambert in a big triple boost ahead of the match, with Balta a good chance to head to Charlie Dixon on the night.
This is one of several games coming up for the Tigers which they’ll need to win as the race for the top eight heats up.
Heading into what should be a tight battle, Richmond is favourites but after resurrecting their season in the last month, Port Adelaide shouldn’t be taken lightly.
Tip: Richmond by eight points.

Tigers retain AFL fear factor: Hinkley
Steve Larkin
AAP
Wed, 8 June 2022 12:30PM
Port Adelaide coach Ken Hinkley describes playing Richmond at the MCG as a "scary proposition".
Hinkley is adamant the Tigers retain a fear factor forged from winning three flags from 2017 to 2020.
"They do," he told reporters on Wednesday.
"They're a fantastic football club and incredibly well coached.
"And they have got their personnel back, I think bar Tom Lynch, I'd say they're close to full strength.
"I would suggest everyone is watching Richmond at the moment and I have certainly been watching Richmond over the last two or three weeks very, very closely.
"And they're a scary proposition at the MCG. Your best is the only way you have got a chance."
... Hinkley was demanding improvement in Port's contested possession output to continue their upward trend.
"Every team in the competition, when you drop off in any part of your game, it's quite simple, you have just got to keep working at it," he said.
"For us, we are not the only team in the competition when you get beat badly in contested possession you lose games.
"It's a pretty accurate stat."

Surprised Port know what playing us at the 'G is like given we've only had 6 actual home games against them in the 25 years since they joined the AFL. In Hinkley's time at Port (since 2013) we've only played them twice (2016, 2019) at the 'G.
Richmond home game (MCG): 6 (W3 L2 D1)
Docklands 'home' game: 4 (W2 L2)
Other (Darwin): 1 (loss)
Port home game (FP/AO): 24 (FP W5 L10 ; AO W4 L5)

Another thriller on the cards? Unlikely rivalry keeps delivering
Richmond and Port Adelaide have delivered some classic matches in recent meetings
By Sarah Black
afl.com.au
8 June 2022
WHEN traditional footballing rivalries are spoken about, it's safe to say Port Adelaide and Richmond usually doesn't feature.
But the two sides have built up an unlikely history of late, with four of the past five games going down to the wire.
While the pair are sitting a little further down the ladder than in recent years, Thursday night's battle at the MCG shapes to be another blockbuster affair.
Round four, 2021 – Port Adelaide 11.13 (79) def. Richmond 11.11 (77) at Adelaide Oval
Robbie Gray continued to build his reputation as a cool-headed match-winner, kicking the winner with four minutes remaining. Port had taken an 11-point lead into the final term, before the Tigers clawed their way in front. It took some Gray magic to seal the win for the Power. Aliir Aliir earned the three Brownlow votes for his 23 disposals and six marks, while Kane Lambert kicked two goals to go with his 24 touches.
Preliminary final, 2020 – Richmond 6.10 (46) def. Port Adelaide 6.4 (40) at Adelaide Oval
The biggest margin of the match was just two goals, in an absolute armwrestle of a preliminary final. The Tigers kicked 2.4 to Power's 2.0 in the final term to just clinch victory. Lambert was once again vital with two fourth-quarter goals, Toby Nankervis (19 hitouts, 13 touches) almost dragged the Tigers over the line through sheer willpower, while the magic touch of Connor Rozee (14, two goals) was dangerous throughout.
Round 11, 2020 – Port Adelaide 13.15 (93) def. Richmond 11.6 (72) at Adelaide Oval
Don't let the final margin deceive you – this was a closely fought affair. Port Adelaide consolidated its spot at the top of the ladder with the win over the reigning premier. Richmond had been statistically outplayed for the majority of the first three quarters but was grimly hanging onto a one-point lead at the final break. Three quick goals from the Power sealed the victory, having previously held a 26-point advantage in the first term.
Round 18, 2019 – Richmond 15.11 (101) def. Port Adelaide 9.9 (63) at the MCG
The one rare blowout in recent times between the two teams. Richmond jumped out to a three-goal lead at quarter-time and were never headed from there. Dustin Martin polled the three Brownlow votes for his 30 disposals and five clearances, while Tom Rockliff (26 and seven) was a battering ram in the middle for the Power.
Round four, 2019 – Richmond 15.9 (99) def. Port Adelaide 14.8 (92) at Adelaide Oval
Yet another thriller at Adelaide Oval, the 2019 clash was a see-sawing affair. The lead changed four times in the last quarter after the Tigers had taken a two-point advantage into the final term. Port Adelaide held Richmond at arm's length until halfway through the third term, then the battle was on. The Tigers were without Martin, Trent Cotchin, Jack Riewoldt and Alex Rance, which, at the time, was unheard of, with debutant Jack Ross finishing with 25 disposals.

THE FOUR CERTAINTIES FOR RICHMOND VERSUS PORT ADELAIDE
By Nic Negrepontis & Andrew Slevison
SEN
9 June 2022
Labelling something a ‘certainty’ in any sport is fraught with danger.
But we’ll attempt to find some anyway.
Here is what we consider certainties for Friday night’s clash between Richmond and Port Adelaide:
Grimes to have 4+ intercepts, 3+ marks and 6+ pressure acts
Richmond co-captain Dylan Grimes has always given his heart and soul.
In his 200th game on a Thursday night at the MCG, you can expect much of the same from the gun defender.
Grimes is not a huge ball winner, but always puts in with the little things like pressure acts, tackles, one percenters and spoils.
He is also an important intercept player for the Tigers, averaging 6.5 intercept possessions across his seven games this season.
We have Grimes having a solid impact against the Power where he should amass 4 or more intercepts, take 3 or more marks and provide 6 or more pressure acts.
Martin to have 18+ disposals, 1+ goals and 3+ inside 50s
Dustin Martin has been in decent form without setting the world on fire in his four games back since personal leave.
Across the season, he has averaged 20.2 disposals as well as 4.8 inside 50s and 1.4 goals.
He has a fairly good record against Port of late, averaging 25.4 touches, 4.8 inside 50s and 1.2 goals in his last five outings.
While he hasn’t been as prolific this year, Martin should knock off at least 18 disposals, kick at least one goal and have at least three inside 50s.
Port Adelaide will lose the hit-out count
Port Adelaide has dropped their only recognised ruckman in Sam Hayes, with Charlie Dixon and Jeremy Finlayson set to carry the load.
They will do so against a pair of rucks in Toby Nankervis and Ivan Soldo.
It’s hard to imagine a world where the Power pair even get close in terms of raw hit-out numbers.
Wines for 25+ disposals
It’s been a bit of a down year numbers wise for the reigning Brownlow Medallist, but tonight presents a great opportunity for Ollie Wines.
Richmond don’t tend to put a whole lot of defensive work into opposition inside midfielders. Luke Parker, Darcy Parish, Zach Merrett, Jack Crisp, Pat Lipinski, Taylor Adams and more have all exceeded the 25-disposal mark in recent weeks against the Tigers.
Expect Wines to find plenty of the footy at the MCG tonight and pick up 25 or more touches.

Cornes is backing Richmond to get the chocolates on Thursday night given the Power are going in without a ruckman.
“They may pull something out of the box, but you’re going to go to the footy as a Port Adelaide fan and Charlie Dixon and Sam Powell-Pepper are going to be doing the rucking,” he said.
“How does that happen? How does a list management error of that significance happen?”
https://www.sen.com.au/news/2022/06/09/why-cornes-doesnt-have-much-confidence-in-port-adelaide-ahead-of-season/
-
No late changes.
Lambert is the sub.
-
4 qtr effort tonight no fades out cost us big time and no sill6 undisciplined.
-
Free kick 1 second into the game for nothing.
Switched it off already.
Thanks AFL, now I can only stand to watch 1 second of your "game".
-
Disgraceful first 5 mins
No pressure whatsoever
-
Low intensity so far
-
Another rubbish rule
That 50m penalty is absolute garbage
-
Port are there for the taking .. this can be a % booster if we remove a digit
-
Juddy! Instant legend! 2 kicks, 2 goals! :clapping
-
This is beautiful footy so far
-
Juddy already elevated himself above basically every small forward on our list bar Bolton.
-
A very underwhelming 2nd quarter by us. Poor ball movement and some poor attempts at goal.
-
Move Balta back. Alir is killing him.
-
Brain fades and getting to cute at times keep it simple midfield needs to work harder.
-
Riewoldt and Balta cost us 3 goals through stupidity
-
Jack R missing that goal lost all our momentum
-
Saw this movie 2 weeks ago. Too soon for a re-run.
-
FFS just kick a drop punt. Seriously.
-
Move Balta back. Alir is killing him.
Yep, not a forward's a-hole.
Not a good night to be playing Soldo when their first ruck is Finlayson. Should have played Balta ruck relief and swingman, maybe Gibcus forward.
In fact I would sub Soldo out with a toe strain or something stupid and do that for the second half.
Jack's pathetic shots on goal honestly he should retire if that's what he's fishing up. Edwards looking cooked again too.
-
We are a pretty average outfit. A middle of the road team. 8-10 at best
Dusty is not even 50% of the player he was.
-
By the way, how easy is it to be a commentator.
When Richmond are on top you laud every little thing about them.
When Port get on top, you laud every little thing about them.
5 minutes play validates a season.
When Richmond are on top you say something vacuous like "it's up to Port to respond now."
When Port are on top you say something fatuous like "now it's up to Richmond to respond."
Thanks, jerk-off, but I get the basic principle of sport.
-
Had them on toast in the 1st 10 minutes of that quarter then...
We just played stupid footy.
The Riewoldt miss was unforgivable
And as for 2 HTB not paid :help
What do you have to do?
-
We seem to go into coast mode. We cant afford that. Our best footy is beautiful to watch when we start to bludge we get ourselves into trouble.
-
must switch Balta to defence and Gibcus forward
-
lost count of the amount of times we kicked to 2 on 1
-
Look what happens when Jack kicks a drop punt! :gotigers
-
See what happens when Jack kicks a drop punt. :-[
-
Boy we have some passengers tonight
-
No one man’s the mark after the 50 and we gift them a goal. Short was right in front and instead of manning the mark he stood by his man. Selfish and stupid footy.
-
Snore
-
We will lose because we are lazy..
-
Soldo… that will do me. Useless and terrible footballer.
-
Best ruckwork of the night goes to McIntosh
-
Wallace era football
-
Bit hard to win when you forget how to kick properly. Auskick kids have better skills than we did that quarter :banghead. Dimma needs to give them a blast. Amateur hour! :banghead. Bloody pathetic!
-
Oh man we went from looking like Geelong circa 2007-2011 to absolute garbage.
I'd prefer to play without Soldo. I swear big ole Andrew 'Ranger' Browne could have played just as well. Big clumsy tall guy who gets a tap ... sorry ... gives a "chop out" in the ruck. Liability.
-
Pressure we built our dynasty on is still there but it’s only in patches these days.I still think their tummys are full
-
How come we don’t get htb in front of our goal but they do
-
Build a team around that kid. Hell, make him captain.
-
The players flop over like soccer players these days instead of staying on their feet and winning the football.
That's what happens when you introduce a million new rules and adjudicate them with the officiousness and panache of a parking inspector who has had his imagination gene surgically removed.
You encourage soft, poo behaviour.
In another 10 years, Grima Wormtongue will be the ultimate AFL footballer.
-
Can someone punch Soldo so we can sub him off…. Brutal.
-
Please, please! No more Soldo!
-
Neither of those Port boys need a concussion test????
-
There are three teams out there these days.
And one of them is very very self-important.
-
Neither of those Port boys need a concussion test????
Spot on.
In fact the Port bench might have lost their heads in the heat of the moment and it could develop into a big story.
-
Clever from Riewoldt. Come on now Bolton, kicking this one will lift he boys and almost seal it. Do it.
-
God damn you can have all the tricks in your bag but if you can't kick a drop punt from 40 on a slight angle what does it matter.
Bread and butter.
-
You’d almost swear we are trying to lose this game.
-
Well done to Hamish for immediately moving to pre-emptively defend the AFL.
Slurp slurp slurp. He loves the gravy he gets from the trough.
-
Tiger pride!!!
-
Butters strapped up and back on--immediately has his head driven into the MCG turf.
If he develops CTE in 17 years at the age of 38, will the AFL reopen the concussion case?
-
Bolton needs to pull his head in. This is turning into Castagna's 2019 GF.
Not stuffing good enough. All flair no care. Do the basics son.
-
That was one of the most concerning wins I've seen.
More wrong than right.
-
Yep, Bolton and a few need a big boot in the arse.
No more Soldo, Lynch back next week and Balta to second ruck.
-
Should of won by 40 points. Lots to work on.
-
Nothing game
Pushing it up hill to beat that cheating scum next week on that effort!
-
Thank god for Fridge, Bakes and Pickett and maybe McIntosh….the rest :help
-
Take the 4 points and run. Was a crapfest for the most part. Not many players I’d give a passing mark to tonight.
-
What a crap game to watch.
Thermals on and freezing my anus off.
Thankfully not leaving angry!
-
Did our best try and lose the game :help. Should rename us the butchers :help. Our backline saved us from ourselves. Too much casual lazy crap from those forward of the ball :banghead.
-
The best and worse of Richmond tonight .
That final Bolton miss was very very poor.
-
The players flop over like soccer players these days instead of staying on their feet and winning the football.
That's what happens when you introduce a million new rules and adjudicate them with the officiousness and panache of a parking inspector who has had his imagination gene surgically removed.

:lol :rollin :clapping

Bank the win move on after quarter time we we're totally different team horrific our skills and composure school boy stuff we would been blown away against a top side.Thought selfishness crept into Bolton and Jack at times and sometimes we we're to cute.Besides Baker who stepped up out of our core group the rest went walkabout.Fade outs happen again and is a big worry.
Coaching was great and selection committee The move of Gibcus and Balta should have come early ,Soldo playing was a mistake and both him and Nank getting beaten by part time rucks ,Tarrant was horrible for 3 qtrs better last qtr , but gez he looks a liability at stages rather Miller get games .Not seeing the love for Hugo poor skills at times.
-
Gibcus is an interesting one. With jack unlikely to play on next year it seems like one of gibcus or balta will move forward to take Jack’s spot. It’s almost like they’re both getting trialled now but both need a few pre seasons training forward me thinks. Then a couple years down the track they could both very well be required in the back line again with Tarrant and grimes towards the tail ends… recruiting will be key next few years.
-
Bank the 4 points and move on
But like thet next week and we will get smashed
-
We are a middle of the road team. Our ladder position is fair. There is a faint glimmer of hope that, if the stars aline, we could do some damage in September. But everything would need to go our way. Injuries, playing at the G etc.
One stark difference from our flag years is that we are very leaky when the other team has momentum. We seem to give up 4-5 goal runs every week, whereas a couple of years ago teams were lucky to get 2-3 on the trot. I think the 6-6-6 rule and our relatively thin midfield play into this.
-
Castagna must play every week. I don't care if he gets a kick or not. His closing speed is essential on our forward line. We looked slow without him!
-

And Im flying to tbe moon in 15 minutes from now :lol
-
Tough conditions and not much of a spectacle.
Have to say we want to hope Prestia stays fit and playing well.
Thought Soldo laughable at times. Thought Gibcus size was shown up thats not a knock thats just him being a first year player.
Thought Tarrant was good cmon credit where its due.
Was livid with Short and his half arsed efforts and panic kicks
Who said we missed Castagna they have to be kidding.Got more out of a first gamer and some needed polish than what Castagna has given all year.
But your right as Hardwicks love child hes bound to be back next week.Sheesh
Still believe Miller should be the second big kpd with Tarrant. Gibcus is not there yet and it Allows Grimes to shut down highly dangerous small medium types like Gray.
And last have to say while Dusty is going okay he is nowhere near his best and may not get back there.
-
Claw -
Wouldn’t you want Balta as the second KPD?
Or did you forget him?

Nope have said all year with both Tarrant and Miller we have BIG kpd covered. Really need Balta getting as many games as possible as a forward. There are good reasons why we should be persevering with this.
-
My gut tells me putting Balta as a forward will end up like the Harry Taylor as a forward experiment. I don’t think he’s a good enough contested mark (seems to run under the flight of the ball a lot like mason cox) and he also doesn’t get his hands on the ball in the offensive half enough when deployed there.

Aliir is a decent defender and made Balta look like a debutant. Baltas true strength is probably he athleticism, not his skills or footy smarts. He will only kick goals when Lynch and Jack are there to take the best two defenders I reckon.

Report Card: Round 13
Ben Cotton, David Zita and Max Laughton
Foxsports
13 June 2022
RICHMOND
The Tigers of old are back! Led by a desperate Liam Baker, Richmond fought off Port Adelaide’s comeback to keep their finals dream alive in 2022. But it was the way the Tigers got the job done in the slippery conditions - with no Tom Lynch (injured) and just two goals coming from tall targets Jack Riewoldt and Noah Balta. Richmond showed they have scoring options across the ground, dominated in the air and “embraced the chaos” as Leigh Montagna calls it. The Tigers finished +23 in hitouts, +5 in contested marks in a win described by coach Damien Hardwick as “ugly”.
In the votes
Liam Baker threw himself into every contest, especially late in the match. He finished with 26 touches - a team high, five clearances, nine score involvements and a goal. Judson Clarke stepped up on debut to kick two first quarter goals and finished with 11 disposals and three tackles. Defensive quartet Nick Vlastuin, Robbie Tarrant, Nathan Broad and Dylan Grimes had a combined 35 intercepts between them to stifle Port’s push forward. Dustin Martin may have had just 13 disposals, but he continues to be a game changer - kicking two last quarter goals when the match went on the line.
Room for improvement
Shai Bolton could have easily kicked a handful of goals against the Power but had a wayward radar on Thursday night. The West Aussie finished with five behinds from his 19 disposals and three frees against - including a costly holding the ball that gifted Port Adelaide the lead just one minute into the final term. The slippery conditions weren’t ideal for big men, but Noah Balta struggled to get into the match. He finished with just 11 touches - and was chased down by Port’s Aliir Aliir when he opted against giving the hands to debutant Judson Clarke who could have potentially strolled into goal.

RICHMOND V PORT ADELAIDE – THE GOOD, BAD, AND UGLY
HB Meyers
themongrelpunt.com
June 10, 2022
I’ve looked forward to Richmond v Port Adelaide games over the last couple of years, mainly based on the two belters they had in the 2020 season.
Let’s be honest – 2020, unless you’re a Tigers fan, doesn’t hold too much of value. Not just in terms of footy, but life, in general, was pretty crappy that season, so the two clashes between these teams – one in Round 11 that saw Port get up by 21-points, and a pulsating Preliminary Final, that saw Richmond win by a kick – were a rare highlight.
Suffice to say, this was a game I was anticipating all week, and in terms of intensity, it did not disappoint. Sure, it disappointed on other levels – there were skill errors aplenty – but the endeavour was there and the players were hard at it… with a couple of exceptions I’ll get to.
It wasn’t a classic Richmond game of footy, yet it felt like a classic Richmond win. It was close, it was contested, and the surge mentality of the Tigers on turnover remained, despite Port being able to turn the tables at periods during the game.
It was Dylan Grimes’ 200th game, and it was Judson Clarke’s first. The Tigers got up, and the yellow and black army sang the song loud and proud as Richmond bullied their way back into the top eight…
… and nobody will want to face them in week one of the finals in around three months.
Let’s jump into The Mongrel’s Good, Bad, and Ugly.
