AFL Round 22
RICHMOND vs Hawthorn
Sunday, 14th August 2022 @ the M.C.G.
Start time: 1:10 PM
https://www.afl.com.au/afl/matches/3993
-
I've always thought this year that Hawthorn are a difficult team to play against. They could have easily notched up a few more Ws.
That being said - if St Kilda could account for them , surely we can too .
-
And the word this week for Richmond is RESPECT!
Learn from the Suns and North losses where we got burnt by our own hubris, respect our opponent Hawthorn who been competitive in most of their games this year and have won 4 out of their past 5 (granted against bottom 8 sides), and turn up prepared to give a strong 4 quarter effort to win the game.
-
The Tiger Army will have a chance to farewell a host of premiership stars prior to Sunday’s match at the MCG against Hawthorn.
Former premiership stars Kane Lambert, Bachar Houli and Josh Caddy will commence a lap of honour from 12.40pm on Sunday, to acknowledge their outstanding contributions to Richmond.
** Please note, triple-premiership defender David Astbury is currently overseas. He will be acknowledged by the Club in front of Richmond fans at a later date.

Glad they're including Caddy. Dual premiership player and showed the way early in the 17 Grand Final, on which so much was built. Seemed to fall out of favour the last few years, but part of the resurgence.

For anyone who lives in or around blackburn and isnt going to the game a few Richmond supporters are usually at the Blackburn Hotel to watch games. We usually congregate just in a little lounge with a fireplace just beyond the kitchen area. Ill be going there on Saturday anyone else who wants to come most welcome to join us. Its usually a lot of fun but there has been one occassion I was the only one there and it was great just sitting having a beer and eating half decent food at pub prices.

You a Richmond family? My (large) family has been in the area for about 60-70 years.
Don't wanna go to the game or is it a bit much?

Seriously to anyone not going for whatever reason, if you live out near blackburn come down to the pub.
-
I reckon we win this by 5 goals.
-
I’m a bit worried that there’s a sense we will make finals. Nothing is guaranteed ! we still need to show a lot more desire.

I grew up in Stawell Street Richmond just off bridge road opposite cussons soap factory now its an officeworks. Moved to glen waverley now further east. Reason im not going to games is I had a kidney transplant last September and docs dont want any of us out in places like the footy. Covid the flu etc. I go to the blacky because its comfortable, warm you dont have to queue for drinks and you can get a decent size steak, chips and a salad for $25. Whilst I dont go the footy these days I buy my Richmond Membership always. Im on automatic renewal.
Half of us me and all my relos like cousins - are Richmond supporters the other half follow the pies.

Richmond v Hawthorn Preview
Nic Negrepontis
SEN
11 August 2022
Richmond and Hawthorn will clash for the second time this year in what looms as a defining game for the Tigers.
Given Carlton and the Bulldogs’ failures in Round 21, Richmond will likely only need one more win to play finals. Locking that away here would save them some stress heading into Round 23.
Meanwhile, Hawthorn has the chance to play spoiler for the Tigers, and then the following week for the Dogs as well.
It was a high scoring affair when they met earlier in the season, with Richmond winning 117-94. Tom Lynch kicked four, while Mitch Lewis and Luke Breust combined for six.
Their 2021 encounter ended in a draw as the Hawks farewelled Shaun Burgoyne.
Hawthorn has been up and down this year, but impressed last weekend, defeating Gold Coast in Tasmania.
Richmond, meanwhile, are also hitting their straps as they put a nail in the coffin of Port Adelaide’s season.
Sam Mitchell hasn’t been afraid to put a tag on this season – could this finally be the week where a team puts some defensive thought into Shai Bolton?
Finn Maginness restricted Touk Miller to 21 disposals last weekend and has proven effective in that role.
With everything at stake, it’s hard to tip against the Tigers.
Tip: Richmond by 19 points.

I don't see how the pub is any safer than the G. At least the G is outdoors which is much better for air changes.
If you wanna come along some time you're welcome to join my dad and I. We drive to east Camberwell and train the rest of the way, walk slowly etc. I have every N95 on the market too haha.

Tigers’ burning question: Can they finally cement their finals hopes?
Richmond was at some stages this season seen as a shoe-in for finals, but tight losses put them on the brink of a stunning collapse. Finals are so close now the Tigers can just touch it, but a win against Hawthorn would almost guarantee a finals berth and finally assure them of September action. From there, anything is possible for this side, particularly if they get Dustin Martin back for their elimination final, but a win this week is virtually a must.

The certainties for Round 22
Hugh stuff
SEN
12 August 2022
Richmond v Hawthorn
Nankervis to win hit-out battle
Toby Nankervis has been one of Richmond’s most consistent players this season.
With Ned Reeves ruled out of Hawthorn’s side for the season, it leaves Ben McEvoy to shoulder the ruck load and he’s not renowned for being a overly prolific hit-out winners.
In a crunch clash, expect Nankervis to continue his recent form and take care of business in the ruck.
Mitchell to have 25 or more disposals
The Brownlow Medallist is in the midst of his eighth-straight season averaging over 25 possessions a game, a fair stat!
Richmond doesn’t usually deploy a run-with player in their side, so the midfielder should have no worries in accumulating 25 touches.
If Hawthorn is going to throw a spanner in the works in terms of Richmond’s finals aspirations, expect Tom Mitchell to have his hands all over the football.

I thought it was at the G too, but turns out the 43 GF was one of three played at Princes Park during the war. I'm going to try to remember that for a pub quiz one day.

Tigers look to avoid final-round scramble
Justin Chadwick
AAP
August 14, 2022
The race to sneak into the AFL finals is set to go down to the wire but Richmond are keen to avoid the frantic last-round scrambling.
The Western Bulldogs' thrilling five-point win over GWS on Saturday means they are just half a win behind eighth-placed Richmond.
If the Tigers fail to beat Hawthorn at the MCG on Sunday, their final-round match against Essendon will become a nervy affair.
But a win over Hawthorn will guarantee finals action, and more importantly give star midfielder Dustin Martin ample time to get his hamstring right.
Richmond have beaten Brisbane and Port Adelaide over the past fortnight, and will fancy their chances against Hawthorn.
But the Hawks will be no pushovers, especially after captain Ben McEvoy announced his retirement during the week.
Hawthorn have won four of their past five games to improve their season record to 8-12 under first-year coach Sam Mitchell.

Need a professional performance today switch on from the get go and take our chances and no passengers let's lift the intensity up every week so we a peaking come finals bring that pressure and harassment.
-
This is a classic danger game. Hope everyone had their ticker checked before heading out this afternoon
-
Need to do what Geelong do. They just snuffed the Suns out early.
-
No late changes. So Floss is playing.
Castagna is the sub again.
-
Lynch is some sort of Greek demi-God. Like Achilles or something. Man mountain. He's looking in good nick!
-
How often. We dominate don't score. They score
-
That goal was sensational!
-
In the picture were: Lynch, Riewoldt, Cumberland, Bolton, MRJ. Pretty good players to have in F50!
-
Lol at the missed trip. Same old same old.
-
Liking it. Boys look "on."
-
I think we have the best key forward in the comp this year!
-
I'm reminded of 2017. We've accidentally found some players and configurations through necessity (injury). Miller stuff/BACK, Sonsie, Cumberland up forward. Looking really tight atm. Not sure if Grimes gets back in at this stage. Martin warm up next week?
-
Great pressure Tigers! Looking really, really good!
-
That was simply a terrific quarter of footy. Best quarter of the year. Wow!
-
They look very ON.
Gee Rioli surely should be pushing that AA 40 squad. After burner!!
-
Which way is the wind favouring??
-
That was simply a terrific quarter of footy. Best quarter of the year. Wow!
Fantastic quarter
They are being witches hats though , which is a factor
In saying that, we are getting the job done
-
That was simply a terrific quarter of footy. Best quarter of the year. Wow!
Hard at the ball and the man with the ball. This is what we have not done as well this year. There would be a few teams looking on hoping they don't have to play us in the finals if we play like this.
-
Wasteful to begin with but turned into a brilliant quarter. Geez we look good when Lynchy is dominating. Miller looking great, sonsie getting plenty of it and Prestia doing what Prestia does.
-
Haven't started the second with the same intensity
-
Bounce of the ball not with us last five mins.
-
In fact it's been really bad, wake up again
-
Skills right off here.
-
Aww that was vintage Edwards. :rollin
-
Tarrant looking good down back.
-
D Rioli really poor few hand balls.
Costs us another goal.
Game on here
-
Gee MRJ is building a reputation with smothers like that.
-
C'mon Beaker ...
-
Aww yes. There's a bit of Caddy about him.
-
Caddy meets David Bourke.
-
MRJ the spirit of this side atm. :clapping
-
Love to know what Jack said to the Hawthorn player there. :lol
-
Im here at the Blacky only 4 here today. Going beautifully the tigers.
-
Im here at the Blacky only 4 here today. Going beautifully the tigers.
Mine's a White Rabbit dark ale please. :cheers
-
Little sloppy in the last few minutes (Lynchy, go top of the square!) but still really good signs. I'm liking our ball movement today.
-
Honestly thought our last 5 minutes was pathetic there. Turnovers galore and poor tackling.
Should be 8-10 goals up and game over.
-
Copping goals late gives me the poos
-
First quarter excellent; second quarter mostly rubbish. Dropped away in the 50/50 contests and made too many mistakes often going for that one handball too many.
-
Nice crowd in today will be close to 50k here.
Quite a swirly breeze here looks to be causing some issues for the players.
Prestia a beast in the middle, killing it out of stoppage Cotchin has been very good but could clean up his kicking.
Lynch playing on a bunch of kids and looks to be having a very good day I’m not sure why he feels the need to short pass the ball hopefully he can just have slot them and finish his dominance.
MRJ is amazing with his pressure it makes everyone at the ground excited.
I like the work of Miller in the ruck and Nank has been good also.
Bolton has had been to deal with a pretty strong tag all half.
Overall has been a solid start but we could be doing better if our handballs were to have hit a teammate rather than hope for the best.
-
Captain Cotch!
-
Cumberland so clever. Playing with confidence.
-
First quarter excellent; second quarter mostly rubbish. Dropped away in the 50/50 contests and made too many mistakes often going for that one handball too many.
Agree getting to cute and fancy at times.
-
Cumberland is such a find. And he plays kinda tall.
-
Marlion Pickett. Switch on FFS
-
5 minutes of poo here.
-
Tigers looking the goods! :gotigers
-
You just love days like today. So much hope. Next three weeks are gonna be good fun.
-
MRJ a jet.
-
Everything coming up trumps today! :rollin
-
This reminds me of the Freo game late in 2017. Shades of 17 here boys. We can run the table in the finals playing like this.
-
That's what I'm thinking. :shh

-
Professional team win. Turned up from the start, didn't give them a sniff at any stage and then put the foot down in the third to blow them away. The last quarter was junk time as we didn't need the % thanks to the draw and no use risking blokes with bigger fish to fry. Top stuff, Tigers! :clapping
-
Pleasing this was second game in a row that we have won the clearances by 11 and contested possessions by 15 good signs.
Best 4 quarter performance this year. We have been building last 3 weeks even those close losses there we're sign's every week we a getting closer closer to our best.
No resting next week winning is the best
formula confidence up and fine tune our game further if someone's got a niggle rest him otherwise business as usual.

Report Card: Round 22
David Zita, Ben Waterworth, Catherine Healey and Ben Cotton
Foxsports
16 August 2022
RICHMOND
The Tigers are going to be a scary, scary side to face in September, which is a lock for them now after their win over Hawthorn. Some of their best players are hitting form at the right time and the games they’ve lost have been on their terms and by tight margins. There’s plenty of promise here and they’re hitting form at the right time. All without a bloke named Dustin Martin.
In the votes
Tom Lynch was enormous with eight goals, an equal career-best, to go with 18 disposals, 12 marks and a stack of score involvements. Dion Prestia and Trent Cotchin were big in the middle, Nick Vlastuin and Daniel Rioli were great in defence and Maurice Rioli Jr was fantastic with and without the ball.
Room for improvement
They didn’t come home overly strong as the Hawks won the final term, but it’s understandable given they’d already sealed the win with what they’d done prior.
