Yep. We're now without both of our first choice two key defenders given Cordner is already missing the whole season with an ACL.
-
Given the results so far this round, win tomorrow and we'll be inside the top 8.

Dropped poppy Kelly.
She has been a real disappointing player
I’m not sure why they picked her and didn’t find a ruck that can actually play footy.

In the AFLW's first ever Dreamtime Match, the established Tigers must face a bullocking Essendon side that is full of confidence. The Bombers are the highest scoring first-year side the competition has seen, averaging 56 points per game, while also piling on a massive 84 points last week. Much of this scoreboard dominance has come late in games, where they have kicked 3.2 (20) in each of their three final quarters and conceded just eight points in the same time period. This looms as dangerous for the Tigers, as final quarters have been their worst this season, kicking just 14 points – 13 of which were in last week's win over Hawthorn.
On paper Richmond's midfield group looks like it should easily take control of the game, with Monique Conti, Grace Egan, Sarah Hosking, and Ellie McKenzie running point, but they have averaged just 19 clearances per game to date, the fewest of any side this season, while the Bombers are getting first hands to it an average of 25.7 times. If Essendon continues that clearance work, the Tigers will be under pressure as the Bombers are kicking a goal from a quarter of their inside 50 entries.
Tip: If Essendon can protect its backline from too much pressure, it's in with a shot for a third win. Essendon by six points.

Need to get an early lead. Don't want to be chasing in wet conditions especially if it buckets down again.
-
Wakefield free in the ruck 40 out (even I admit that wasn't a free). Chips to Brennan who marks 20 out on a 45 degree angle. Misses though :P.

That was a great mark by McClelland :o.
-
Virtually every other team can kick set shot goals from 40-45m out except us. We struggle to kick them from 20 out :banghead.

Wow that was terrible by us. Lucky to only 8 pts down. Once again I have no idea what our gameplan is. We just look totally disconnected.

Should have been a free for a headlock to Brennan.
McKenzie kicks it off the side of the boot running into goal from 15m out and misses :P.

Conti brilliant feed under pressure at HB to Sheerin. Goes long to Brennan (free). Finds Jess Hosking at HF 50 out. Kicks to Wakefield who marks behind 10m out. Goal! :gotigers

From the kick-in we intercept. A quick snap by Sheerin also misses.

Great mark by McKenzie. Gets it to Conti 45 out. Plays on as the siren goes. No score.
Just like the men's team. Where's the communication from the bench and on ground to be aware it's almost the siren and if you mark it inside 50 DON'T play on :scream.

Shows there's a breeze and scoring to the right (on the TV) is difficult while you need to take your chances with the breeze.
Our midfield was better that quarter time. Got on top in the clearances. Sheerin and Shevlin have both played well off half-back with their rebound.

As the wins should be Chuck
That's why I keep saying we have a bloody soft draw. Majority of games are against newbies or teams that started the same year as us = no excuses this season
Have to say the weather out there today was shocking
One minute no wind, next torrential rain, the it's blowing a gale and then the sun's shinning
Thank goodness for Conti, Hosking and Brennan in the last minute.

Richmond held firm in the final quarter to notch its second win of the season over Essendon on Sunday afternoon at ETU Stadium.
The Tigers held out a surging Bombers by two points - 3.8 (26) to 3.6 (24) - in a clash that was on the line right into the final minute on a wet and windy Sunday afternoon.
In such difficult playing conditions elite players came to the fore, and that was certainly the case with Richmond on-baller Monique Conti, who continually inspired her teammates.
Conti had 15 possessions and laid nine tackles. And she kicked a telling goal from a brilliant snapshot near the boundary line early in the third quarter to what was the most difficult end to score, given the breeze.
It seemed the Tigers had done enough to win with a six-point lead at three-quarter time and kicking to the southern end with the wind in the last term.
But Essendon threw everything at them in a bid to snatch a late victory. When Bomber Amber Clarke's quick kick bounced through the unguarded goal, it cut Richmond's lead to just one point with 68 seconds left.
At the crucial centre bounce, significantly, it was Conti who won the ball and the clearance to spear a pass to Sarah Hosking that virtually iced the game.
Hosking had played a critical role in the Tigers' triumph too, limiting Essendon's brilliant midfielder Maddie Prespakis to just 11 possessions while collecting 14 touches herself.
Crucial to the contest was how each team would best use the southern end.
Essendon had the chance first and took an early lead when Bonnie Toogood goaled after a high tackle, but that was their only scoreboard success with the wind despite a lopsided 11-1 inside 50 advantage.
Richmond players made better use of the breeze at their backs, particularly with Conti bursting from the centre several times to drive them deep into attack.
Courtney Wakefield twice marked at the top of the goalsquare and each time converted from close range to propel the Tigers into the lead on an afternoon when goals were rare.
Richmond ruck Gabby Seymour's hit-outs set up centre takeaways, and the Tigers were well served by the rebounding work of Tessa Lavey and Eilish Sheerin across half-back.
Dreamtime at ETU
It didn't quite have the atmosphere of the MCG, but both Essendon and Richmond can be proud of their collective effort in putting on the League's first Dreamtime Match. Spectators defied the soggy conditions to pack into ETU Stadium, and were treated to an excellent display of fast-flowing and tense football. Both sides wore never-before-seen designs on their respective Indigenous Round guernseys, with Essendon assistant coach and proud Noongar woman Kirby Bentley painting the boots of many Bombers players. Both clubs have for years shown their commitment to Indigenous Round in the men's game, and look to have transferred that passion to the women's competition.
Up next
Richmond will take on Brisbane on Saturday morning at the Swinburne Centre ahead of the Toyota AFL Grand Final.

Conti the AFLW’s best ‘without a doubt’, sparks Tigers to thrilling Dreamtime win
Marnie Vinall
The Age
September 18, 2022
Richmond battled to a two-point win over Essendon at North Port Oval on Sunday afternoon in the first AFLW Dreamtime match on the second weekend of the Indigenous round.
In wet, windy and then sunny conditions, the Tigers won 3.8 (26) to 3.6 (24) in a clash that came down to territory and pressure in a scrappy, gutsy arm wrestle, with plenty of long bombs, fumbles and hard-fought wins of the ball.
Opening the celebration was a Welcome to Country by Boon Wurrung Custodian and Senior Elder N’arwee’t Aunty Carolyn Briggs, who spoke of the significance of the occasion and importance of celebrating Indigenous culture within the women’s game.
“This is women’s day, this is about the matriarch ... I celebrate all of you young women and your achievements to be here because it takes a lot of courage,” Briggs addressed the players and the crowd.
Essendon were dominant in the opening term, winning the territory and heaping on the pressure, with 11 inside-50s to 1, and doubling the tackling count 22 to 11.
Then in the second term, they were put under siege as Richmond gained the advantage of the breeze – which played a significant role all game – and had 13 inside-50s to 2 for the Bombers and won the possessions and clearances.
After the main break, both sides battled the downpour as well as each other in the wet. Each side tried to move the ball quickly and push forward at all costs, attempting to surge whenever in possession.
Richmond held a two-goal lead for the majority of the third term before Bomber Daria Bannister booted a late goal to reduce the margin to six points, setting the stage for an exciting fourth quarter.
The sun cleared for the final term, with Essendon claiming another late-quarter goal off the boot of Amber Clarke to reduce the margin to less than a goal, but Richmond held on. Courtney Wakefield finished with two goals for the Tigers, and Monique Conti the other.
The Tigers’ one-two punch of Ellie McKenzie and Conti was lethal, and Sarah Hosking did a good job on Maddy Prespakis, keeping the prized Bomber to 11 disposals.
Carlton coach Daniel Harford, declared on Fox Footy’s commentary, that Conti was “without a doubt” the best player in the competition right now. Her use of speed, bodywork and clean, crafty possessions does make a case that’s hard to argue with.
Conti, the league best-and-fairest favourite, also had an incredibly impressive one-hand gather and snap from the pocket to open the second half.
Grace Egan was also lively in the mid and ruck, while Gabby Seymour won the hitouts with 25 to 13 for Essendon’s Stephanie Wales. Tigers skipper Katie Brennan was also fierce in attack, back for her first game this season after being sidelined with a footy injury, but didn’t register a goal, ending her streak after 15 consecutive games with a goal.
Essendon co-captain Stephanie Cain was relentless, finishing with 16 disposals, five marks and six tackles, while Bannister applied constant tackling pressure and set up her side with scoring opportunities.
Essendon’s emerging star Paige Scott suffered a corky to her left thigh in the opening term after a tackle from Richmond’s Beth Lynch, but played the rest of the game with her leg heavily strapped.

Monique Conti can win the competition Best and Fairest award
Richmond midfielder Monique Conti is mounting a strong case for this season's best and fairest award after another stunning performance on Sunday afternoon in the inaugural AFLW Dreamtime match. Her 15 disposals, five tackles and nine clearances were vital in getting the Tigers moving out of the contest, but it was her superb snap on goal to put Richmond up by 15 points early in the third quarter that ultimately proved the difference in the game.

Backline newbies stand up for resilient Richmond
Alex Catalano
innersanctum.com.au
18/09/2022
Richmond’s newest defenders helped to weather the storm of a potent Essendon attack in horrid conditions at North Port Oval.
With the ever-important Rebecca Miller missing due to injury, the Tigers had plenty to worry about pre-game. It was first match she wouldn’t appear in since her debut in Round 1, 2020.
But after a first term controlled by the Bombers, those fears would be quickly allayed.
The second quarter saw the entire team come to life, led by the stone-wall that was the defensive duo of Eilish Sheerin and Libby Graham.
Miller, at 184cm, is typically tasked with the opposition’s most dangerous tall forward. Today, Graham often found herself with the responsibility of star Bombers forward Bonnie Toogood throughout the match.
With Laura McClelland also joining the defensive group, they were crucial in turning the game, giving the midfielders and forwards plenty of opportunity through their rebounding work.
The third quarter saw the Bombers dominate inside 50s by seven, also winning clearances by two.
But with Graham and Sheerin steady at the back, they were able to hold on in the final term and secure the win in a fierce contest.
Speaking to The Inner Sanctum post-game, Graham touched on how the group replaced the presence Miller brings week-to-week.
“She plays such an important role as that anchor and that calming voice back there,” Graham said.
“We’re such a solid unit now, we’ve developed. You take someone out and then you someone bring… we brought Laura [McClelland] in and she was fantastic. She played exactly her role, everyone played their roles.
“That’s all we can ask for, for everyone to compete, everyone to win their one on ones and work as unit.”
Graham has become a lock in the Richmond defence, after playing just six games across two seasons at GWS.
It’s easy to forget that the 25-year-old has very little AFLW experience. Her one-on-one work gave Sheerin the ability to play her intercepting and rebounding game.
Blanketing the mighty Essendon attack was a big positive for coach Ryan Ferguson.
“They did fantastically well,” Ferguson said post-game.
“From a couple of years ago we had Harriet Cordner and Bec Miller holding us up strong, and now without either of them to keep a team to three goals, I thought they fought really well together.
“There’s still lots to learn from it, and get better, but I think they’re playing as a really tough to score against unit. It’s impressive having Bec out of that team.”
Sheerin’s journey into the AFLW is unlike most, playing her first season at 29.
Plucked out of AFL Sydney, where she played for the Inner West Magpies, she had previously been a train-on player with GWS before she injured her ACL.
A versatile player, who plied her trade as an inside midfielder in her home state, Graham always knew Sheerin could be a valuable player at the elite level.
“I played a little bit with [Eilish] in Sydney and a little bit against her in Sydney AFL,” Graham explained.
“She brings exactly what she brought there. She’s really competitive, really strong. Her ability to execute skills in those conditions… she’ll break out of packs and hit great kicks.
“I think all of us bring different strengths to the backline. That run off half back for the kind of game we want to play is perfect.
“She’s always been very capable. I knew as soon as she got to this level she’d be exactly like that.”
Sheerin starred with 20 disposals and a mark, while also taking two shots at goal. She’s leading the competition in metres gained (393.6) and intercept possessions (10.8).
Grinding out victory
With storms lashing out across Melbourne all day, it was always going to be a tough prospect for either side to go home with the four points.
The momentum swung at multiple points, and while the Bombers had all the play early, the explosion of Mon Conti after quarter time coincided with the turning of the tide.
Well held in the first term, the midfield superstar was involved in everything thereafter, including kicking one of the goals of the season.
That attitude to shake off the tag and have an impact was something that rippled throughout the whole team.
“You might try and keep [Conti] down for a bit of time, and you might have success with that, but she’s got the work-rate to bust through at some point,” Ferguson said.
“If she sticks at it, which she’s becoming more and more consistent with it, she’s just hard to contain for the whole game.
“I thought we controlled the last quarter, but there were still some moments we could really learn from. Although losses teach you a lot, we like learning from wins.
“After the couple early in the season that we felt like we could have gotten a result, it was great reward for effort.
“I want them to take out how hard they had to fight for it.”
Ferguson had looked for a greater connection between his midfielders and forwards last week against Hawthorn, as they scored their season-high 44 points.
This was after poor conversion and wasted opportunities saw the Tigers kick 1.5 and 4.3, giving up a number of chances to pull ahead at important moments.
And while they still kicked 3.8 today, there was a noticeable improvement in the structure ahead of the ball.
Richmond finished the game with eight marks inside 50, with the return of captain Katie Brennan for her first game of season seven.
The coach was happy to see the next stage of improvement for his forward line.
“[Brennan’s] presence was helpful, and just her footy nous,” Ferguson said.
“Even late, to just take a couple of those nice marks and take the heat out of the game and take her 30 seconds.
“[She didn’t] kick a goal, but she was probably as important as if she kicked three in terms of her effect on the game, so it was great to have her back in.”
Courtney Wakefield also benefitted with her captain by her side, kicking another two goals in a day where the scores didn’t flow easily.
With five goals in her past three games, she’s leading well from the front.
“[Wakefield]’s in really good form,” Ferguson said.
“Her contest last week was unbelievable. Having KB next to her today, one of them might get you.
“And then having Ellie [McKenzie] floating around at times, just gives us that multi-pronged attack where earlier in the season we were struggling to find goalscorers.
“It certainly helps to keep the opposition guessing with who it’s going to go to and how they can stop them.”
Richmond faces a huge challenge next week against ladder leaders Brisbane at Punt Road Oval.
