The run home: Your club's chances, fixture for final three rounds
Gemma Bastiani

11 October 2022
6. Richmond
20 points (five wins, two losses), 136.2 per cent
Similarly to Geelong, the Tigers have a final three games that open the door for a top four push. They should bag wins against Carlton and GWS, but the real challenge comes against North Melbourne in round 10. Still more than 20 per cent behind Geelong, they not only need to win at least as many as the Cats but also make up percentage if they are to leapfrog into fourth.
The run home
RD8: Carlton at Ikon Park
RD9: GWS at Mildura Sporting Precinct
RD10: North Melbourne at Arden Street

How uneven is the draw?
With 10 games and 18 teams, it's always going to favour some teams over others.
But, if you look at the top 8 right now, we will have played 5 of the top 8 (there will be two we won't play and we are the other team). We will also have played a few in the top half of the bottom 8 and none of the bottom 3 (including Sydney who have yet to win a game and have a % of 28%). Incidentally, Geelong play Sydney in the last game so we are never going to make up the 20% and make up the % that Geelong should get from that game

Double header today WP. Lions v Crows straight after.

Getting dominated early. Didn’t pass our half back line from the first bounce to that goal.
-
Atrocious umpiring as usual :facepalm.
Conti penalised for going back into the marking contest after Mckenzie took the mark ::).
Tiger defender then has her legs taken out by a Blue diving in low to smother. No free ::).
Carlton get the first goal. The game has been in their F50 so far. 8 Inside 50s to our zero. We haven't got it past the centre.
0 - 8
-
Getting smashed in the contest and lost our structure forward of the ball so we're trying to handball our way through rather than kicking long to targets. Turnovers galore.

This is the worst we've played all year. So soft! Haven't turned up to play and just getting pushed aside so easily.

Game over and we're only in the first quarter.

Making Carlton look like a top side.
-
I’m calling it. Not sure we can kick 5 goals in 3 quarters to win but would be good to get it in our half once for a start.
-
Finally get it past centre. J.Hosking to Reid 35 out. Plays on with the goalsquare empty but misses to the right.

We get through Carlton's press at HB. Reid to Brennan towards Yassir. She gathers to Egan who kicks it and Sarah Hosking marks 10m out. Goal! :gotigers

The Carlton ruck has been the issue all game. Too big and tall. Hitouts 10 - 30. That's really been the only threat since QT.
Needs to make the most of our F50s too. Wakefield has but others need to take their chances too.
As for the umps ::) :facepalm.

---------------------------------------------------
RICHMOND has extended its winning streak to six games with a hard-fought 10-point win over Carlton at Ikon Park.
After a slow start where the Tigers conceded 26 points, they ultimately won 6.8 (44) to the Blues' 5.4 (34) on Friday evening to open Pride Round.
The Blues controlled the opening term, dominating territory and really challenging the Richmond defence, but it took eight minutes to break through for their first goal, a beauty from the pocket by way of Mimi Hill. From then, it was a first-quarter onslaught as the Blues went on to kick their highest ever opening quarter score.
It was a different story in the second, however, as Richmond found space through the middle of the ground, began to hit targets and, importantly, Monique Conti started to have her say with ball in hand. It became much more of an armwrestle, and each team exchanged impressive running handball chains and strong intercept marks, and Richmond slowly pegged back that early deficit to trail by just three points at the final break.
As the Tigers found more meaningful possession and repeat forward entries, Courtney Wakefield became the most dangerous forward on the ground, taking two contested marks and finishing the game with four goals.
The Darcy Vescio defender experiment continued for the first three quarters, but as Richmond surged and Carlton were found wanting in attack, the competition-leading goalkicker was switched forward to provide an option. With the switch, Gab Pound moved from attack to her home of defence.
Richmond was able to create space in its forward line, and then bear down on Carlton's defenders with immerse pressure, forcing worried disposal when they looked to exit the back 50.
Sarah Hosking's grunt around the ball was a welcome addition for Richmond's midfield, while Katie Brennan added another tall target in attack which forced Carlton's defenders to play accountable footy even if she wasn't quite racking up the stats.
Carlton's dynamic duo of Mimi Hill and Abbie McKay excelled once again, combining for seven clearances and 39 disposals, but it was McKay's ability to drive the ball forward that was particularly valuable. Because of her impact, McKay had Richmond tagger Meg MacDonald to contend with in the final quarter.
It becomes near on impossible for the Blues to make finals from here, still a game and percentage out of the top eight, while the Tigers have a sniff at a top four spot.
Carlton on fire
With pride in the air and a celebration of captain Kerryn Peterson's 50th game, Carlton came out with a bang and kicked its highest-ever opening quarter score. Goals came through Mimi Hill, Peterson, Gab Pound and Taylor Ortlepp as the Blues controlled territory and piled on the pain for the Tigers defence. Ortlepp's goal, her first in AFLW footy and Peterson's, to complete the club's set of 50 gamers kicking a goal in their milestone game, were particularly special.
The 'hot girl hot streak' extends
As coined by Richmond midfielder Grace Egan earlier in the week, Richmond's "hot girl hot streak" has been extended to six games with this win over the Blues. Across its first three seasons in the competition Richmond won a total of six games. They have now done that in the space of six weeks and are finals bound for the first time.
What's next?
Carlton must travel north to take on Gold Coast at Metricon Stadium on Friday night, where the Blues kicked their highest ever score against the Suns back in 2021, meanwhile Richmond continues its push to finals against Greater Western Sydney in the first-ever AFLW match in Mildura on Sunday afternoon.

That Carlton ruck is a beast. We should try and poach her for next season. Gabby can play forward/second ruck.
-
Great to see the girls fight hard for the win it really shows the belief is sky high and they really play for each other.
Good on the coaching staff for the turnaround too.
I’ve got to say i thought Seymour battled well against the odds to be the better player on the day.
She was a better mark and better around the ground after quarter time. :clapping
Wakefield was awesome up forward as was Brennan. My girl McKenzie was impressive at stages if she can take out her stupid nothing handballs to no one and just back herself in she has the ability to be one of the best players in the game.
Conti was BOG and should be leading the Brownlow what a player, just a leader out their that brings other players into the game too.
Egan continues her impressive work inside.
Sarah Hosking is so impressive with her attack all game she just doesn’t give up and gut runs to create options all game.
We have some great tacklers in our team.
The pressure after quarter time was very impressive.
Our defence held up after a disastrous first quarter. :clapping
-
Conti another 10 coaches votes. Absolute freak!
Wakefield's hands tonight was brilliant. Was just clunking them and best of all she finished off her good work with 4 goals straight.
Egan was a contest beast after QT tonight. Unlucky not to earn frees as there were a few times she copped tackles around her head or in the back.
Sarah Hosking lifted as well after QT. It's a shame her footskills can be a bit hit and miss. Jess is the better kick of the twins IMO but Sarah wins far more of the ball so that's why she plays in the midfield.
Loved McKenzie's burst on that ball on the wing which set up the goal that put us in front in the last qtr. She wanted it more than anyone else. Had a good game too.
Thought Reid had some influential moments tonight as a high HF. 7 disposals still doesn't sound great but I thought she took a couple of telling marks and turned most of them into scoring opportunities for us. The last couple of weeks have been decent for her role. Hopefully, she is slowly picking up the tempo of senior footy. We do need our midsized and small forwards - Reid, Kiely & Yassir hitting the scoreboard more. Courtney's not going to snag 4 goals every week.
Sheerin is lethal with her footskills. That long laser pass to Conti in the 2nd qtr was sublime. It seemed tonight like Carlton were trying to limit Sheerin's impact as she didn't have as many bursting runs off HB as she's had in previous weeks.
Lavey had a bit of a shocker on the wing IMO by her standards. Seemed very fumbly tonight.
If Miller is right to go next week touchwood then she'll probably comes in for Woods.
That Carlton ruck is a beast. We should try and poach her for next season. Gabby can play forward/second ruck.
Yep, she was our only real threat. Gabbie has had to ruck against taller girls every week and done well to at least nullify them but that Carlton girl was not only taller but strong in the core as well.
-
Incredible win considering how bad they were in the 1st quarter
They may not have huge stats but I was impressed with MacDonald and Jacques. MacDonald's tackling is elite and Jacques just gives so much more defensively when down back.
Also, want to mention Woods. Stats say only 1 disposal but her 2nd and third efforts in the ruck around the ground when giving Gaby Seymour a chop put was crucial. Sometimes it is the small things that deliver important moments
Nice to see Tom Lynch there tonight supporting his sister
-
Surely that’s a first finals appearance locked in now with the suns loss tonight. 8 points and 50% clear with 2 games left.
-

Pretty sure it was a lock after last night with our % being so high
I know I've banged on about it all season and even before this season started but there were no excuses in not making finals this year. With our draw, we had to make finals

Tigers claw back to win in “mature performance”
Peter Williams
central.rookieme.com
October 16, 2022
RICHMOND coach Ryan Ferguson has praised his side for another “mature performance” after getting “jumped” in the opening quarter against Carlton before coming back to win, 6.8 (44) to 5.4 (34) at Ikon Park on Friday night. In another strong AFL Women’s clash, the Tigers found themselves down by 19 points at the first break, but from that point on, kicked 5.7 to the Blues’ 1.2 to run over the top of them and continue their six-game winning streak.
“It felt like it was a really good game of footy and the composure and the patience of the team… they did jump us but in saying that they had the wind and they converted really well and they just outplayed us in the first quarter,” Ferguson said. To wrestle momentum back and do it bit by bit, and to stick to task, it was another mature performance and really proud of how they handled that situation.”
Richmond is now guaranteed a finals spot, sitting to wins clear inside the top eight, with a heathy percentage of 134/9 compared to those in the bottom 10. Ferguson said matches like the tight win over Carlton helped the side further mature for “whatever” comes next.
“It’s just part of our growth in trying to become a good team and just understanding how to handle all sorts of situations, whether that be in front and challenged or behind and trying to work your way back,” he said. “The more experiences we get and if you get the good result at the end of the day it definitely adds to that belief. I know at three quarter time they were just oozing real genuine belief. They really thought they could outrun the opposition and outwork them and get the score on the board and that sets us up for whatever’s in front of us.”
When asked what the key reason behind Carlton getting on top of the Tiers early, Ferguson said the navy blue side was far better at the centre clearances – a stat the Blues won 9-2 – and they translated that into four goals with the breeze.
“I thought they were a fraction sharper and just a step ahead of us, and because they were able to dominate clearance with the wind,” he said. We started winning the ball okay but it was in the back half and probably didn’t take territory enough and overused the ball, their pressure was so hot early. I just thought it doesn’t take much, I thought they were a good team working their way into some good form. They’ve had their own challenges but I thought they were a tough team to play against tonight.”
Sarah Hosking returned to the side with captain Katie Brennan to bolster the stocks, with Hosking having 18 touches, five marks, six clearances, seven tackles and booting a goal, while Brennan kicked a major from eight disposals and four marks. On this particular night, she played the support role to Courtney Wakefield who slammed home four majors, while Ferguson praised the aerial strength of Gabrielle Seymour and Ellie McKenzie.
Another one who had a big game was former Blue, Grace Egan who racked up 18 disposals, eight tackles and two clearances, and Ferguson said the match was business as usual for ‘Greg’.
“I think she was excited to play the game but it was very low fuss,” he said. She’s one of us and obviously wants to get the win, but so do we all. We didn’t really focus on that at all to be far. We’ve never beaten Carlton, we’ve come close, but that was another good one to tick that one off off. We’re still working out way through, there’s plenty more we’d like to be able to get at, but that was a good one to get a win against the Blues who we respect.”
Richmond is now not only in a guaranteed finals spot, but still in with a chance for top four. Though their percentage is lower than their rivals, the Cats take on Adelaide next week, whilst the Pies have both North Melbourne and Brisbane in the final two rounds. Richmond faces bottom four side GWS in Round 9, before a bigger challenge against the Roos in Round 10.
“We aim for finals, we set ourselves at the start of the season. But since then we haven’t really talked about it because that’s not really how we operate,” Ferguson said. We’re going to have a really big challenge against GWS next week and that’s what we’ll focus on and just keep trying to ingrain our play and our method, and a consistent brand of footy and good things will come from that. Proud that we’re in the situation but in terms of our focus, let’s just play another good game of footy next week.”

Sarah Hosking lifting, and bringing teammates with her
Alex Catalano
theinnersanctum.com.au

Richmond has found itself going from strength to strength across its club record six-game winning streak. But on Friday night against Carlton, the side had to dig deep to get the game back on its own terms.
The first quarter of the back-and-forth tussle was entirely on the Blues’ terms. They managed to lock the ball inside 50, as the Tigers entered their opposite arc just three times.
Daniel Harford’s side was also clinical at winning the ball from the source. They were winning clearances nine to five, led by youngster Abbie McKay to see the Blues up by 19 points at the first break.
But after a slow start, experienced midfielder Sarah Hosking helped to provide the spark her teammates needed to all but lock in a first-time finals berth.
In her first game back after three weeks on the sidelines after suffering a hamstring injury, she came to life in the second term, having five disposals and four clearances.
Alongside Mon Conti (three clearances to half-time), Hosking helped to create opportunities for the Tigers in a game where they didn’t come easily.
The last time she played, she had a defensive role on Essendon’s Maddy Prespakis, placing a hard tag on her and restricting her to just 11 disposals.
But on Friday, she did all her work on the offensive end, including kicking a goal and generating six clearances and four inside 50s.
“She just jumped straight in and was really hard and tough,” coach Ryan Ferguson said post-game.
“Probably a bit rusty with her ball use, but got better and better as the game went on. Thought she worked through that really well.
“Sometimes you can get complacent [with having] a couple of good players back.”
This match was the first time the Tigers had beaten the Blues, in another milestone for the club.
Season seven has been one of broken records, as they now continue into the final two rounds with confidence higher than ever.
After dropping their first two matches to Adelaide and Geelong, they’ve held their nerve in down-to-the-wire games every time they’ve been faced with the challenge.
“The composure and the patience of the team… they [Carlton] did jump us, but they had the wind and converted really well,” Ferguson explained.
“To wrestle momentum back and do it bit-by-bit… it was another mature performance. Really proud of how they handled that situation.
“The more experiences you get where you get a good result at the end of the game, it just builds belief.”
Working with Conti and Grace Egan, Hosking’s drive out of the middle brought the forwards into the game, particularly in the second half.
Stella Reid took four marks, providing a handy linking option between the higher-up and deeper forwards. Emelia Yassir also added four tackles and two inside 50s.
But it was Courtney Wakefield who stole the show in front of the sticks, kicking a career-high four goals.
“She was amazing. She’s had games where… I think it was last week or the week before, she played a bit higher up the ground and gave us a real contest. Didn’t kick any goals and was huge,” Ferguson said.
“Tonight, with Katie [Brennan] back in the team, she was able to work really well and get dangerous. I’m glad for her to be able to get a little bag.”
Sitting 6-2, the Tigers have all but locked in finals. Barring a disastrous end to the season, they’ll appear post-season for the first time in the club’s history.
With two rounds left to play though, the coach says they’ll be looking at getting the results first before thinking beyond that.
“We aim for finals, we set ourselves [that goal] at the start of the season, but since then we haven’t talked about it,” Ferguson said.
“We’re going to have a really big challenge against GWS next week, and that’s what we’ll focus on. Good things will come from that.
“Proud that we’re in the situation.”

Brennan allows Wakefield to get off the chain
Katie Brennan might be the biggest name at the Tigers, and captain of the club, but the role she is playing when able to hit the field this season is an underrated one. Although she has only played three games this season as she manages a foot issue, Brennan forces defenders to spread their focus between both her and Courtney Wakefield and the latter took advantage of that on Friday night. Wakefield took two contested marks and kicked four goals, playing a significant role in Richmond's sixth win on the trot.
