Buckley explaining what the Pies are doing.

A new position in footy

“We talk about quarter backs all the time and blokes that set up the play, but it’s specifically the sixth defender that plays closest to the midfield. I think that this position is redefining modern footy and the way we’re seeing the attack control defence in early stages of this year and last year.

“I think we’re seeing this position and the person who plays this be so important in any team’s makeup.

“But what Collingwood are doing with Nick Daicos or Jack Crisp or Scott Pendlebury is even playing that role periodically, they’re just another midfielder and they’re backing their back five behind them to get the job done.

Collingwood v Richmond preview

Lachlan Geleit
SEN
29 March 2023

What a blockbuster this game is.

Perhaps the competition’s two biggest clubs under lights at the MCG on a Friday night, with both rivals yet to cop a loss this season.

While both teams are technically unbeaten, the Tigers split the points with Carlton and had to fight to hold the Crows off in Adelaide.

On the other side of Melbourne Park, Collingwood have quickly become the AFL’s hottest team with scintillating wins over Geelong and Port Adelaide to rocket into premiership favouritism.

While last year Tom Lynch and the Tigers got a hold of the Magpies, Collingwood deserve to enter this game as favourites given their early season form and they’ll say they’re a drastically different team to Round 8, 2022.

With several injury concerns at Punt Road and Craig McRae’s side clearly firing on all cylinders, Collingwood should be too strong for Richmond if they’re able to get their game going as they have in the season’s opening fortnight.

Tip: Collingwood by 20 points.

Are the 2023 Tigers Ready for Broadway

guywholikessport
guywholikessport.wixsite.com
29 March 2023

I’m not quite sure if this year’s Tigers are ready for Broadway. We’ll find out on Friday night when they play a marauding, corridor centric, heavy scoring Collingwood outfit led by Damian Hardwick’s one time grasshopper Craig MaCrae.

After a 2022 season where the Pies had a statistical profile that more closely resembled Gold Coast but for an extraordinary record in close games, the 2023 Pies look like a juggernaut early in the year. They are clearly the heaviest scoring team in footy through 2 games despite having a forward line that is densely populated with second and third bananas. They sustain this by being third in score launches (Scoring chains launched by an intercept possession, free kick, hitout-to-advantage or clearance) and inside 50s while having a number of gifted forward half players who very seldom miss when they kick at goal. As a team kicking 20.10 on the year while leading the league in shots. Put simply, if a Daicos brother gets the ball inside 50, they shouldn’t even have to bother kicking it. Just run it back to the centre. Save the ball boy a jog.

They are middle of the pack in terms of points given up, but they are so explosive going forward that it hasn’t mattered yet. All they need to do down back is hold up. The Pies have won the clearance battle consistently while also taking Richmond’s chaos ball style to its logical conclusion, apparently asking himself “what if we just played as if the wings don’t exist?” Neither he nor his staff could come up with an answer. In that sense, they have the best of both worlds. They win the clearances, but then they also prioritise the territory war.

Watching Collingwood play last year was like watching the most wrenching, absorbing average movie you’ve ever seen – think Hostage with Bruce Willis. Watching them this year is like watching Die Hard. Perfectly executed all action all the time.

The only real concerns for the Pies this year are whether their cavalcade of mediocre forwards will do them in this season? And whether they are peaking too early? A tertiary concern is whether Jordan De Goey can go 6 months without committing another crime.

Richmond, on the other hand, are still very much a work in progress. I have no concerns that the Tigers have peaked too soon. Where McRae has taken the Richmond style to its logical conclusion, Hardwick appears to be looking to zag on it. While the Tigers still clearly emphasise generating turnovers and intercepts, sitting seventh and third respectively in those categories through the first two games of the year, there has been a renewed focus on the clearance game personified by the big money signings of Taranto and Hopper.

While Richmond’s clearance stats aren’t eye popping at 9th in the AFL in clearance, their’ clearance differential is +3.5 per game which sits 7th in the AFL and should improve as they continue to refine their midfield balance. In 2019, by way of contrast, the Tigers sat last in total clearances and 16th in clearance differential.

All of a sudden, everything has flipped and the Tigers are copying Collingwood.

The other interesting change that the Tigers have made is not really a change at all, but instead a second bite at Damien Hardwick’s number 1 (on reflection maybe number 2) fetish: a third key forward. The two incumbents are obviously Tom Lynch and Jack Riewoldt. Lynch is one of the two or three best forwards in the AFL and has started the season well. Riewoldt is not the player that he once was but, despite his severely diminished athleticism, still knows where the goals are and still knows how to kick them. He’s like a truffle hog. Ground bound but valuable.

After the failed experiment last season with Noah Balta as the third forward, Hardwick brought Sampson Ryan in for his chance to be that third tall. The fact that Ryan was successful against Adelaide is beside the point. Where the Tigers’ once primary focus was pressure and tackles inside 50, through two games Richmond sits below league average in both categories. At 206cm, Samson Ryan is unlikely to be mistaken by Jason Castagna in terms of ball pressure.

In large part, Richmond’s allocation of resources over the offseason and the way they played in 2022 telegraphed this pivot in game style. Most Tiger fans, myself included, expected this and also expect that it will only get better as the team starts to embrace the shift. The real worries lay behind the ball where Richmond appeared either too old or too young, and altogether too reliant on Dylan Grimes coming off another severe hamstring injury. Thus far, however, Richmond is holding up. Through two games they are second in goals given up to opponents even despite having played Carlton’s twin towers. It should be noted, however that Richmond are 9th in shots allowed, a more sustainable indicator of defensive success than just goals kicked by opponents.

The true test, however, is not early in the season when everyone is fresh. What happens if/when Grimes misses some time, be it through injury or management? Would it be Vlastuin or Balta who slots into Grimes’ role? Put simply, are the X’s and O’s going to be good enough when the Jimmy’s and the Joe’s start to get worse? I don’t know, but I am apprehensive to find out.

While Collingwood spent the offseason refining their tweaks to the Richmond style and chopping the wings off the ground at Gosch’s Paddock, Richmond spent theirs implementing a new style. Friday night is not, therefore, a referendum on much of anything other than who is better in round 3. I don’t expect Richmond to win, and if Richmond loses this week, I don’t expect it to matter all that much.

The key takeaway is that all of a sudden the Tigers are behind Collingwood in terms of development and refinement of a game plan, and that makes Friday night’s game between master and apprentice all the more enticing.

Luke Hodge suggested Cotch. Lewis liked that idea as he said Cotch has footy smarts. Still need to play Daicos goal side though.

Robbo said Baker but Lewis said that's still too negative. Lewis would go with Bolton hoping Shai kicks two early to force Daicos to defend and not just run into the middle.

How are we too young behind the ball.  If all are fit. Tarrant 34, Grimes 31, Broad 30, Vlastuin 28, Rioli 25, Balta 23.
The back ups have been Short 27, Baker 25, Young 24, Gibcus 20, Miller 23, Nyuon 21.Browne 19. Mansell 22, Smith 18.

Fair dinkum i reckon Grimes has been ordinary. Most of us are holding back because of how good he has been.

Operation Stop Daicos: Tigers to use team approach to quell Magpies ace

By AAP
30 March 2023

RICHMOND will resist trying to tag early Brownlow Medal favourite Nick Daicos in its crunch clash against Collingwood on Friday night.

Daicos is the talk of the town after the 20-year-old's blistering beginning to his second season with Tigers coach Damien Hardwick saying on Thursday he couldn't recall a better career start.

Coaching his 300th AFL game at the Tigers, Hardwick has his hands full with injuries to key men Dustin Martin, Jacob Hopper and Jayden Short, while Nathan Broad is suspended.

In some welcome news for the club, Hardwick expects superstar Martin, who has hamstring awareness, to only sit out one game while Hopper's injury was unrelated to his history of knee trouble.

Hardwick said Richmond would likely rely on a system rather than a tag to stop Daicos at the MCG.

"He's a very good player, but Collingwood have got a lot of very good players so we generally rely on the system to take care of it," Hardwick told reporters.

"We'll have contingencies and try and manage him as best we can - he's going to get the ball, no question, so, do we allow him to play his game and try and manage it and try and exploit him the other way? Probably."

Hardwick likened the early impact of Daicos to a young Chris Judd starting out his career at West Coast.

On the back of his two dominant performances this year Daicos is equal Brownlow Medal favourite with Demon Clayton Oliver and Carlton's Patrick Cripps.

"Back when I played Chris Judd came in with the same sort of pedigree," Hardwick recalled.

"He played against us when I was playing at Port and kicked four (goals) in a game, destroyed us.

"I don't think I've seen a better first year from any player and then you think, surely he couldn't back it up, but he seems to have got better again."

While Collingwood are unbeaten, Richmond has opened with a draw and a win.

Magpies coach Craig McCrae and his assistant Justin Leppitsch have both spent time as assistants under Hardwick, who said they knew each other's game style well.

"It's whose system stands up better, and who brings great intent," he said.

"We are both territory sides, want to try and get the game played in our half whoever does that will obviously come out on top.

"We probably have got an understanding of how they're trying to move the ball, what they're trying to do with the ball but it's easy to see that and trying to stop that is the next challenge."

Burning Questions for Round 3

Catherine Healey and Max Laughton
Foxsports
30 March 2023

Tigers’ burning question: Is it the former skipper to the rescue for Richmond?

No Dustin Martin and no Jacob Hopper for Richmond this week leaves the side “thread bare” according to Gerard Whateley and undermanned in the middle. But veteran Trent Cotchin looms as Richmond’s potential saviour. The former skipper can rotate through the middle, and four-time premiership player Luke Hodge believes there’s an even bigger role with Cotchin’s name on it – shutting down Nick Daicos. “(Play) as a defensive forward this week,” he said on SEN. “There’s a smart bloke who’s disciplined and who knows how to find the footy. (Cotchin) can play a serious role for them. All he has to do is limit (Daicos) to 12,13, 15 touches and if Cotch kicks a goal, they’d look at that as an even. There’s a role for him – limit (Collingwood’s) most attacking, best kick in the game and see if you can add value that way to the side.” Fox Footy commentator Gerard Healy agreed that a defensive forward role has worked against Daicos in the past, pointing to Swan Ryan Clarke.

Magpies’ burning question: Who can stop the ‘Flagpies’ run?

Craig McRae and his band of merry men are simply dominating after two rounds of AFL action. The Magpies have shown their preliminary final run was no fluke as the team has improved exponentially in areas that held them back last season. After being ranked 17th in contested differential, Collingwood is now sitting first. Statistics show the Magpies are ranked No. 1 for ball movement, second for ball use and third for contest and clearance in warning signs for their rivals. “Their first two rounds were amazing. Offensive weapons everywhere and a style of play making the most of what they’ve got,” Fox Footy’s Nathan Buckley said. “We love the way they play – it’s exciting. (McRae’s) come in clearly and given them confidence to just pull the trigger,” Jonathan Brown added on On the Couch.

Four recent moments that have further sparked the Richmond and Collingwood rivalry

Annie Ireland
zerohanger.com
March 31, 2023

Ahead of tonight's massive grudge match between Collingwood and Richmond, we've taken a look at some of the biggest moments between the two sides over the last few years.

From some thrilling contests to unprecedented outcomes, here are four moments fans of both the Magpies and Tigers might remember from recent seasons.

Grundy's match-winner, 2016

Saturday will mark seven years to the day since this iconic moment, as Collingwood stole the win from Richmond via a Brodie Grundy goal in the game's dying stages.

A second-year Darcy Moore sent the ball deep into Collingwood's forward half off a deliberate free kick, with nobody marking the pill before it spilt to the ground.

Somehow, Grundy managed to grab the ball out of the pack and kick a remarkable goal with four seconds to go and hand the Pies a one-point victory.

It was a big night for forwards at either end as well, with Tigers champion Jack Riewoldt kicking three in the final term and Alex Fasolo kicking six goals for the Magpies, including five in the second half.

The 2018 preliminary final

Richmond had won 22 games in a row, had built an MCG fortress and were searching for back-to-back premierships until Collingwood pulled off an upset for the ages, led by American Mason Cox.

The Pies won by 39 points, with Jordan De Goey starring to kick four, but it was Cox's efforts that had the MCG crowd chanting "USA! USA! USA!"

Cox kicked the first three goals of the second quarter to put the Pies 42 points up. His most memorable moment was his contested specky in attack before strutting back to kick a set shot and exposing Richmond's defence.

Another key story out of the game was Richmond's decision to play Dustin Martin. There had been talk of concerns about Dusty's corkie all week. Was he fit? Would he play? Neil Balme and Damien Hardwick had both shrugged off concerns, however, it was evident Dusty was under an injury cloud as he recorded zero clearances and was tagged by Levi Greenwood.

The 2020 season restart

The first game after the season originally paused in 2020 in front of what usually would've been 80,000 fans - except it was an empty stadium.

The strange atmosphere resulted in an even stranger outcome - a low scoring 36-36 draw was recorded, recording a tie for the second time between these two sides since 1917.

Richmond would've been wondering what could've been, leading the inside 50 count 43-32 and Tom Lynch kicking three goals.

Collingwood also had the potential to win the game, desperately rushing a behind in Richmond's forward half with two minutes to go, levelling the scores.

Higgins' 'snag' of the year

Jack Higgins won the 2018 Goal of the Year for a remarkable goal against Collingwood in Round 19.

Many had originally thought the goal wasn't actually a goal, instead suggesting that Higgins had thrown the ball before his boot made contact with it mid-air. However, the AFL confirmed it was a "clear goal."

Higgins tapped the ball upwards and somehow scissor-kicked it over his head to go through for a goal, with his teammates giving him the nickname 'snags,' delivering a memorable speech for the award at the 2018 Brownlow count.

Will a Tiger go to Nick Daicos on Friday night?

Jack Jovanovski

Three-time Richmond premiership coach Damien Hardwick, entering his 300th game as Tigers coach on Friday, has an array of headaches as he prepares his side for its blockbuster match against the in-form Collingwood, including forced changes at team selection, as well as whether he sends one of his disciples to rampaging Pie, Nick Daicos.

Entertaining the media on Thursday, Hardwick toyed with the idea of assigning one of his Tigers to attempt to curtail the damaging Daicos, surfacing the prospect of his side's "system" being the main combatant and forcing the son-of-a-gun to be accountable defensively.

"Well, he's a very good player, but Collingwood have got a lot of very good players, to be honest, so we generally rely on [our] system to take care of it.

"But, look, we'll have contingencies and try and manage him as best we can. He's going to get the ball, no question, so, do we allow him to play his game and try and manage it and try and exploit him the other way? Probably.

"So, a lot of sides have tried but not many have succeeded, so we're one of those that will give it a crack."

Richmond's forced changes, comprising of  Dustin Martin (general soreness), Jacob Hopper (knee), Jayden Short (calf) and Nathan Broad (four-game suspension), replaced on Thursday night by youthful trio Jack Ross, Hugo Ralphsmith and Judson Clarke, may impact Hardwick's decision-making pertaining to choosing a desired tagger.

To elaborate, Trent Cotchin, a candidate to run with the defensively-deployed Daicos due to the Brownlow Medal winner's sojourn to the forward line this year, could be shifted back to predominantly midfield duties on Friday night because of Hopper's absence. Richmond's ex-skipper, spiritual leader, and renowned contested-ball devotee may be the perfect run-with option to stick next to the Collingwood accumulator.

The Punt Road stalwart, while he doesn't possess the same foot speed as he once did, does still possess the acumen and nous for the game that fuelled him to lead three premiership-winning Richmond outfits.

Liam Baker and Rhyan Mansell, too, are viable candidates to put the defensive clamps on the father-son prodigy from a forward position. Baker, reputable across the competition for his tenacity when approaching a contest, would undoubtedly ensure physicality if he were assigned to Daicos.

Meanwhile, on the topic of aggressiveness, fringe best-22 utility Mansell presents as an alternative option. In previous seasons, Mansell has instigated frisky encounters when shadowing Melbourne goal-threat Kysaiah Pickett and Collingwood forward Jack Ginnivan, encouraging the notion that he could be the perfect option to frustrate an otherwise-composed Daicos.

Finally, an additional consideration is Maurice Rioli Jr. A fellow son-of-a-gun, Rioli has swiftly built a repertoire of applying forward-line defensive pressure. The youngster is virtually an ambassador of Hardwick's storied forward-pressure philosophy, accumulating multitudinous pressure acts on a week-to-week basis. In 2022, Rioli ranked equal-12th among forwards in pressure acts per game (19.2) in just his second AFL season. He's certainly an option Hardwick will ponder.

Ultimately, though, Hardwick could simply put a line through the entire idea of an individual irritant, instead potentially opting to rely on that "system" we continually hear about from the yellow and black mentor.

If so, the Tigers, without a bevy of guns on Friday night, will need all the 'systematic' help they can get if they want to let Daicos wander unopposed.

Labelling something a ‘certainty’ in any sport is fraught with danger.

But we’ll attempt to find some anyway.

Here is what we consider certainties for Friday night's blockbuster between Collingwood and Richmond.

Tom Mitchell 20+ disposals

Collingwood recruit Tom Mitchell has started the 2023 season on fire in his new colours.

While he’s not racking up the astronomical numbers he did as a Brownlow winner with the Hawks, he’s having a big impact for the Magpies who have been crying out for a clearance player like the 29-year-old.

Across two games, Mitchell is averaging 24 disposals and 1.5 goals a game while ranking elite in contested possessions, ground ball gets, centre clearances and clearances.

Against a Richmond side that aren’t afraid to let the opposition pick up plenty of footy, expect Mitchell to get his hands on and dispose of the ball at least 20 times on Friday.

Daniel McStay to kick at least one goal and take 4+ marks

With Mason Cox out and Brody Mihocek under an injury cloud/ruled out, Daniel McStay looks like he’ll be asked to play as Collingwood’s main target inside 50.

While he didn’t play that role often at Brisbane, McStay showed he could do it for the Magpies with a starring three-goal performance in the practice match against Carlton and he’ll hope to have a decent impact on this game for Collingwood’s forward line to operate successfully.

Expect plenty of football to head the recruit’s way inside 50.

Shai Bolton to have 15+ touches and kick at least one goal

Since Round 5 last year, Shai Bolton has remarkably gone goalless just twice in almost 20 games.

In those two games he missed out, Bolton kicked a combined seven behinds. He’s become a weapon forward of centre and has won enough of the ball in years gone by to consistently show off his tremendous talent.

In his last two games against the Magpies, Bolton has gathered a total of 47 disposals and booted three majors.

Being a player who thrives on the big stage – and there are few bigger than Richmond vs Collingwood at the MCG – it’d be a shock if Bolton doesn’t have a say on Friday night’s result.

Tom Lynch to kick multiple goals

Speaking of good records against specific teams, Lynch’s against Collingwood is nothing to be sneezed at.

Last time the 30-year-old played Collingwood he booted six majors to set up a strong victory over the Magpies.

There’s no doubt Craig McRae will do his homework heading into Friday night, but Lynch has got the runs on the board, booting 12 goals in his last three games against the Pies.

He’s also fired up at the right times so far in 2023 kicking six goals across the opening two rounds. He’s another player expected to thrive in front of the 85,000+ at the ‘G.

WHY COLLINGWOOD COULD “REALLY GET HOLD” OF RICHMOND

By Andrew Slevison
SEN
31 March 2023

David King is expecting Collingwood to beat Richmond comfortably on Friday night.

The Magpies are up and running in 2023, winning their opening two matches of the season and kicking big scores of 125 and 135 to boot.

They impressed against Geelong in Round 1 and Port Adelaide in Round 2 with a mix of defensive and attacking football that is pleasing on the eye.

King explained why Craig McRae’s Pies are so effective in the early stages of 2023.

“I’m in awe of the way they’re hand-in-glove defending and attacking,” King said on SEN’s The Picks.

“The way they defend is complementing the way they move the ball.

“If it’s a fast turnover, they’re off and gone through the corridor. It’s a slow turnover and the opposition are set, no matter where the ball is on the ground, they play wide.”

Sam Edmund added: “They’re breathtaking at the moment.

“The only query you’ve got is how long can they possibly stay this white-hot for? Because it’s an unbelievable tier of football they’re playing.

“It will be a real test for Richmond.”

King says it’s an exciting time to be a Pies fan due to the belief McRae is instilling in his playing group.

“If you ask the coach, this is just the start,” King added.

“This is the messaging. I keep coming back to the messaging. ‘Are we playing well are we? Ok, we still think we’ve got so much scope for improvement’.

“Instead of worrying about the last 20 weeks, he’s saying, ‘We’re not there yet, we are not at our best version just yet’.

“It’s exciting for a Collingwood fan.”

Richmond will be without Dustin Martin, Jacob Hopper, Jayden Short and Nathan Broad for the Friday night blockbuster which is enough to tip this fixture firmly in the favour of the Maggies, according to King.

“Just with the outs (at Richmond), I think Collingwood could really get hold of them here and put another show and kick another 120 points,” he said further.

“It could be 40-plus (points). There will be a point in the game where that (Collingwood by 40+) will be $2 instead of $3.45.”

K.I.S.S. principle tonight in the wet conditions. Hard in first at the contest, don't overuse the ball by hand (especially NO backward handballs), get the ball moving forward to win the territory battle, and our forwards need to play in front.

Quarter time

Richmond   1.0-6
Coll'wood   2.6-18

Well that was utter crap. Trying to play dry weather footy in slippery conditions. I could handle losing if they were dominating winning possession through their own doing but bloody hell we are making it so easy for them playing utter dumb footy gifting them the ball goal side. Where's the defensive basics especially from our smalls/crumbers, Tigers? Is being FRONT AND SQUARE at the fall of the ball such a difficult concept! Is kicking long in the wet a foreign concept too.

Our defence hasn’t looked good since the 2020 grand final. Both structurally and in terms of individuals. Balta having a ripper game so far but other than that they are their own worst enemies out there. Grimes 2 turnovers on kicks from def 50 and also left the ball behind him one other time, almost cost us 3 goals. Grimes’ form in particular has been worrying for a second season now.

Nothing wrong with a torp in fact I'd like to see more of them on a night like tonight but a professional footballer should be able to get one to go 40-50+ metres. I know he shanked it but damned he's been terrible by foot.

Only positive is we're "only" 19 points down. Should be 10 goals down. That first half was simply embarrassing. Apart from our backline who have stood up so far under immense pressure and a stack of Collingwood inside 50s, this has been miles from basic AFL standard. Time for a rocket for our mids and especially our lazy half-forwards and small forwards who are always out of position at contests.

Work rate in middle isn't matching Pies. Our forwarding is a mess. Cumberland just needs to play I don't want any replies. There I no dangerous option on lead except for Lynch. Too easy to defend. Jack is too slow, which is fine but we need a better number 2 so Jack can be 3rd key forward.

Nankervis can't be captain anymore. I'm sorry but his leadership is junk. I'd almost make Liam Baker captain.

Can't be having 34 and 35 yo dominating possessions in the wet. Unacceptable.

This in a nutshell.

I'm very concerned of our lack of forwards for some time. George went backwards. Maurice has a tick bag but is constantly confused. Cumberland burst on scene and throw away. We've thrown Balta up there, Baker, Graham, Cotchin. I'm honestly clueless as to what our forwarding stands for..

Balta backing up last week. Thank goodness.

Hugo in the last 10 mins was very good as that defensive sweeper/quarterback. Actually, one Tiger showing a steady head.

I didn't think Grimes or Floss were bad. Our back six have been under continually the pump thanks to the easy way the ball is coming into the Pies' forward line. Actually, think our back six have done reasonably well considering.

Sure the Pies have missed a few but we're not losing and playing crap because of our backline. If you said the Pies would only have 28 points at half-time you'd take it. It's our mids and forwards that have been headless chooks that need the rocket and criticism with and without the footy. Been pathetic! Amateur hour  :banghead.

Post by: TigerLand on March 31, 2023, 09:54:29 PM
Much better footy in 3rd but just too much unacceptable stuff.

1. Picking 3 slow tall forwards in the wet. With no Dusty why isn't Noah playing from start.
2. Laird and now Sidebottom have just absolutely carved us up in the middle.
3. Too many passengers tonight. Lynch was hopeless on a reject Crows defender and not in Pies Best 22. Pickett shocking. Maurice continues to look very lost when he has the ball. Compared to Cumberland who everytime had the ball knew exactly what he was doing, weaving through traffic to free himself up on his left and lowered his eyes every time.
4. No ball users. When Rioli isn't run and carrying we don't have anyone with good enough skills to hit targets so we kick to contests and we got absolutely smashed when ball hit the ground. Judson Clarke looks to be the next best, maybe Bolton but he too often doesn't use it well, but ge this is really disappointing to have an entire list of AFL players and not any elite ball users. Collingwood have an absolute plethora.

Yeah missed Tarrant, Broad, Dusty and Hopper but we are absolutely miles off the best. Need to change things if we don't want to just make up numbers like last year. If Pies can turn Sidebottom into a elite wingman again we can do the same but need be better in many areas.

This reminds me of the Melbourne Anzac Eve game last year. We've been just substandard and are only 'close-ish' on the scoreboard because the opposition were inaccurate. Only difference is we've won the clearances which makes tonight even worse. We are getting our hands on the ball first but just coughing it up so meekly or just plain butchering it.

Final Score

Richmond    1.0    1.3      4.5      7.7-49
Coll'wood    2.6    3.10    7.15    8.15-63

Goals: Riewoldt 2, Lynch, Bolton, Mansell, Clarke, Ross.

Only positive is we played crap and got smashed in contested footy but didn't give up and kept the margin low. Won the second half 6.4 to 5.5. Damage was done in the first 1.5 quarters when our mids were soft and uncompetitive. See how we go later in the year against them with Hopper, Dusty, Broad and Short in the side.

Cotchin needs to make a choice. Play at full pace as he needs to at AFL level or retire.

This 70 to 80% pace rubbish has to stop. Play a young Midfielder like Dow or Sonsie instead of an old bloke playing at half pace. Love him but it's over.

Goes back to my comment earlier. Does not know what to do with ball in hand. Majority of the time will either turn it over or hesitate and get run down. Even his assist to lynch was a bad kick to the defenders advantage, lynch just managed to beat him to it.
Title: Re: Richmond vs Collingwood @ the MCG --- Round 3, 2023

Agree that we stayed with probably the best team in comp at the moment, whilst playing awful and 4 from our best 22 out.

8.15 could have been 15.8 and we lose by 9 goals. Lots to work on, I'm still not happy with our forwardline. Not enough guys are goal kickers. Maurice doesn't hit scoreboard enough. Mansell set shot says enough. 3 talls I don't think works. I like Lynch Riewoldt and Cumberland. Graham up forward doesn't work he also doesn't hit scoreboard. So keep Lynch quiet and we won't score much. Gotta find more avenues to goal.

What's happen to our skills and disposal under 10 stuff sometimes not clean enough and will hold us back bigtime that and brain fades has been holding us back for the last 2 seasons to many players for my liking.

Dimma needs to do what's best for our club we are carrying to many veterans that are one paced now.

Please!

A little nothing push,  ::)

I think our blokes should have bigger things to concern themselves with than that

More wondering what the 50 was for

Riewoldt and Cotch are both spent. Cotch can’t get from contest to contest, has zero outside run and can’t close players down. He was so slow to react to a few balls that spilled out in the open and he was in the box seat. Riewoldt… don’t get me started: zero leads, can’t read the fall of the ball any more, wants to play volleyball or soccer more that footy. NEVER runs hard to provide a contest on the wing or even half forward. Defenders just sit all over Lynch because Jack can only get gift wrapped possessions these days.

Nankervis is a lazy plodder, as soon as the ball leaves his space he just walks everywhere. Doesn’t push hard forward or back and is never a marking option down the line.

Grimes has lost that electric closing / shutdown speed, he looks a real worry to me.

We served up hospital pass / handball time after time that got our players smashed as soon as the ball arrived. Also can’t remember how many handballs and kicks got smothered last night. We had zero run / options from behind the ball and I can’t recall us once taking a chance through the corridor.

Dow should be a mainstay in our midfield right now, same with Sonsie.

We are asking Maurice to carry too much load, he is playing high half forward and is chasing and tackling and pressuring his arse off in the midfield and can’t impact the scoreboard because he has spent all his petrol tickets by the time he gets forward. Plus, at the moment, he is a little slow between the ears / with vision and this gets him caught a lot. He’ll be a ripper in another 12 months.

I would have taken a 14 point loss pre game .

We are still tinkering with our best version.

RICHMOND

The Tigers were fortunate not to be “absolutely belted” by the Pies in a “messy” MCG blockbuster. Losing Nathan Broad (suspension), Dustin Martin, Jacob Hopper and Jayden Short (all injured) didn’t help heading into the clash, but it was a meek first half performance. The Tigers hit a 68-year low against Collingwood when they registered just 1.3 (9) to half time. But Richmond did rally in the second to mount two comebacks against the in-form Pies. Richmond won both the hit out (+17) and clearance count (+5) but couldn’t use it to their advantage in the 14-point loss.

In the votes

Liam Baker threw himself at absolutely everything against Collingwood. The ball was camped out in the Magpies forward half but Baker showed his class in the early wet conditions to rack up 32 disposals, a game-high 12 intercepts and seven score involvements. Noah Balta had multiple goal saving moments in the under-siege Tigers backline. Skipper Toby Nankervis gave his all as he finished with 39 hitouts, 20 touches - 11 of them contested and seven tackles.

Room for improvement

The three talls forward line just didn’t work for Richmond in the conditions. Jack Riewoldt, Tom Lynch and Samson Ryan didn’t have an impact in the first half before Ryan was subbed out. Lynch found the footy in the second half but his wayward goal kicking really cost his side. He finished the match with a disposal efficiency of less than 29% from his seven touches. He kicked just the 1.3 against Collingwood. Dylan Grimes was showing his age in defence as he struggled to have an impact. His night ended with 11 touches and just one mark.

SEN Breakfast’s Kane Cornes and Nathan Buckley went through each of the games and discussed which team the result said more about.

Cornes:Richmond, because we know everything we need to know about Collingwood.

“Are Richmond top four worthy? Probably not. Are they a bit sluggish through the midfield, are they a bit slow? Probably.

“And do they have the upcoming talent under the age of 24 that some of the other teams do? I’ll probably say no.

“I think the result says more about the Tigers.”

Lynch had only a goal and seven touches against the Magpies, while Riewoldt had two goals from his six touches and one mark. Riewoldt, in what shapes as his final season, has five goals in three games, and his form may be debated at match committee.

“We didn’t play very well at all, and we still only got beaten by 14 points. We are still confident that if we get it right, we will be pretty strong,” Balme said.

The Key Takeaway: Dimma knew his side’s limitations

Damien Hardwick knew his Tigers side was down on personnel so went about making it a tough night for the Magpies.

He set up to thwart Collingwood’s system which had kicked massive scores in Rounds 1 and 2.

The strategy worked for some of the night and gave the Tigers a sneaky chance when they got within a goal in the second half.

While it didn’t end in a win, and the Pies were inaccurate, it showed that the current (equal) flag favourites can be tamed within games.

The Positive: Baker brilliance

Liam Baker’s beginning to the season has been superb.

He was comfortably Richmond’s best player against the Pies, providing constant drive from the back half.

Baker finished with a team-high 32 disposals and a game-high 12 intercepts, plus 10 rebound 50s while impacting forward of centre with seven score involvements and three inside 50s.

He sets the tone with his attack on the ball and is frequently one of the Tigers’ most consistent performers.

Dimma gives 4 to Bakes and 1 to Nank and McCrae gives all his votes to his own players?  I didn't think I'd ever dislike McCrae after his time with our VFL program but FM the guy is showing his true colours now.

Richmond 'unrecognisable' from premiership three-peat

Altogether the Tigers had 81 turnovers and took just nine marks inside 50. Garry Lyon said the current team look "unrecognisable" to the one that won three flags in four years.

“It could have been a lot worse,” Lyon said of the 14-point margin. “I don’t think they are the Richmond of (the past), they’re not going to maintain the standard of when they won three premierships in four (years). Some of their guns, their most influential players are getting older and that’s just life.

"It’s going to happen to Jack (Riewoldt), it’s happening to Trent (Cotchin), Dylan Grimes. They’re not the players they once were.”
