The lack of AFL-listed players is showing. Getting smashed in the clearances. Banks being trialed in the middle. And with Bauer playing behind the ball and Bradtke our only tall forward we're struggling to get it past HF.

Not sure what has happened to Maurice's ball use. Did all the hard work bursting away and around 3 Dogs but sprayed the banana right-footed kick from 25m out that it landed in the pocket. No left foot but in saying he should still have kicked it with his right anyway. It wasn't that hard.

Make that another goal to the Dogs from a stoppage  :P. Centre clearance in this case.

Green also playing in the middle.

Another goal from a clearance to the Dogs. Some dumb footy. Ball was effectively pinned but we coughed it up rather than seeking another stoppage.

A couple of repeat entries. Bauer to Bracher chips to Hicks 40 out. Misses.

Dogs go coast to coast. We give away a free kick and give them another goal.

McDonagh turns it over coming out of defence with 20 secs to go. Dogs set shot after the siren misses thankfully.

Quarter time

Richmond    1.2-8
Footscray    6.3-39

Goal: Banks

This could end up a 100 point flogging :help. Our structure and the quality really drops away when our number of AFL-listed players is low and they need to play out of their positions.

Playing: Bauer, Bradtke, Biggie, Miller, Ross, Maurice, Banks, Green, Tarrant (must be managed game time - haven't noticed him out there).

Bauer in defence
Banks and Green are in the guts.

Only "positive" is Bauer has shown some ability as a defender.

3 key talls down and getting thrashed across the park makes this a tough watch.

When we've got to play Banks and Green as centre square mids it shows we're lacking depth thanks to our outs. We are also getting thrashed in the hitouts, so the Dogs' mids are having a field day. We've had to turn the game into a scrap to deny them scoring chances.

Poor quality stream so I didn't see much but looking at the numbers it was a more even quarter. Sting probably gone.

VFL Tigers fight until the end against Footscray

By Richmond Media
8 April 2023 9:30pm

Richmond VFL suffered its first defeat of the season against Footscray at the Swinburne Centre on Saturday, going down by 23 points, 12.8 (80) to 8.9 (57).

The Bulldogs burst out of the blocks with the opening four goals, catching Richmond on its heels.

Foostcray was slick and potent in the first quarter, cashing in when conditions were at their prime.

The battle-hardened Tigers fought until the end, down three rotations for all the second half due to injuries to Robbie Tarrant, Kaelan Bradtke and Bigoa Nyuon.

The heavens opened in the second half, making it ever trying for Richmond to eat into the deficit, which hovered around five-to-six goals for most of the afternoon.

Coach Steve Morris prowled the boundary line after half-time, his voice booming and reverberating around Punt Road Oval.

Constant encouragement and instruction bellowed from Morris, “Good work ‘Steely’, I love it” as the tough midfielder pinballed from body to body.

“Keep stepping in boys”, referring to Richmond’s ability to exert manic pressure in the contest.

“Excellent Maxy!”, when praising a staunch defensive effort from debutant Max Clohesy the who travels the 384km twice a week to train at Tigerland.

Fresh off back-to-back wins to start the season, the Tigers entered the encounter in solid form whilst the Bulldogs were yet to register a win following admirable losses to Casey and Brisbane.

Sam Banks played in midfield role following time on a wing at half back, and the rangy Tiger showcased his class by foot with Richmond’s opening goal of the game.

Banks jagged two majors for the day, swapping between on-ball and wing.

Footscray fought back swiftly with two-goals-on-the-trot, securing a 31-point lead at quarter-time.

Richmond evened the ledger around the ball in the second term and slotted the opening goal via Cam Olden.

Olden was a welcome return, his neat skills handy through the midfield and up forward.

The Tigers injected speed into their ball movement, however, they were swimming against the tide due to their limited rotations.

Captain Lachlan Street’s iron will was on show for all to see. He gained reward for his unwearied efforts as he extracted a ball from congestion, and slid through Richmond’s third major on his trusty left boot.

As it had done for the majority of the first-half, Footscray quashed the Tigers’ momentum with back-to-back goals, as the Bulldogs extended their buffer to 40 points as the half-time siren sounded.

Jacob Bauer started his SANFL career as a key defender and showed that in his efforts in the first half against Footscray. The athletic big man’s piercing ball use by foot and pulverising spoils shone most in a mixed bag of conditions.

Bauer found himself forward of centre late in the final term, slid past a weary Ben Miller, who gladly handed the ball to his teammate, who pumped the ball through from just inside the arc.

Have been saying we really lack enough AFL listed mids on our list to mirror what we do in the Seniors for ages.
It was the same with Tall fwds but at least with Bauer mid season last year and Bradtke start of season this year we addressed that to some degree.

Been wanting people to do the exercise, list the mids in best 22 and look at what is left for the magoos. Just a couple of injuries and the magoos become bereft of listed mids with almost no big mids..

Depending on your best 22 this is the mids i think we have for the magoos. Names like Graham and Short i have named but that won't neccesarily be the case and if they are best 22 it wont neccesarily be mids who come out for them.

Listed mids for VFL TEAM.

Green 179/76 sml.
Dow 183/79 sml /med
Short 178/75 sml . Gotta ask is he a mid? or good enough to be named as a mid in the seniors. Imo no.
Graham 181/85. Powerfully built sml mid.Probably best 23 but is he a top line mid.
Ross 187/87. med. The only medium mid named because there are no others. Cannot call him an inside mid in reality. he just has not played there.

The last three in reality will play a lot of senior footy thru injury and form. they are the only mids we have with any sort of afl experience in the wings. The reality is there is only Green Dow and to a much lesser degree ross on the list developing as mids. There is Sonsie but he is already best 22 imo.

There is a huge need for us to find and develop some big mids .

VFL Report: Round 3

Richmond VFL coach Steve Morris provides a summary of how the Tigers’ players performed in Saturday's Round 3 match against Footscray at the Swinburne Centre.

Jack Ross (22 disposals, six rebound-50s, four clearances)

"Came back and had another good game at this level. He's a player that stands out when he plays VFL, and I thought in particular, his second half when he went into the midfield was of a high standard."

Jacob Bauer (18 disposals, nine rebound-50s, five marks, one goal)

"Played down back after hitting the scoreboard pretty heavily in the first couple of games this season, and he was outstanding in defence. He stood out with his aerial power when both marking and spoiling, it was a really good starting point for him down back."

Steely Green (17 disposals, seven inside-50s, six clearances, six tackles)

"Had six clearances and six tackles which is great to see from a young player. He played in the midfield for the first time and we're looking forward to him getting some continuity into his football."

Ben Miller (16 disposals, five clearances, 33 hit-outs, one goal)

"It was a pretty tough task for him in the ruck. Once Bigoa Nyuon went down, he was flying solo in that space. He fought gallantly up against Bulldog Jordon Sweet in the ruck, and I thought he gave us something around the ground. It was nice to see him have multiple shots on goal."

Sam Banks (14 disposals, five inside-50s, four marks)

"He got into some really good spots. He didn't get a heap of the ball, but I thought he was quite damaging. He had one particular contest late in the game that he can be really proud of, running back with the flight of the ball and putting a big spoil on."

Maurice Rioli (seven disposals, five tackles, five inside-50s)

"Had limited game impact, but we certainly saw his defensive pressure on show. We'd certainly be looking for him to have more of an impact, but I thought he turned up with the right attitude and hopefully he'll be able to start taking those opportunities."

Bigoa Nyuon

"Made a good start to the game but unfortunately went down with an ankle injury and was unable to come back on. It threw us out a fair bit in terms of our key position players and our team balance."

Robbie Tarrant

"Robbie didn't last very long in the match unfortunately. It was a disappointing day for him, with him not being able to get through with his hip injury."

Kaelan Bradtke

"Had a quiet start to the game but was unfortunately injured in a pretty heavy collision in which he broke his hand and played no further part in the game."
