All 5 AFL-listers out there: Ross, Dow, Bauer, Banks & Green.
-
Dow wins the HTB from the start. Gets to Ross who finds McDonagh 40m by the boundary. Across the face doesn't make the distance and poor play by our forwards to allow a uncontested mark by the Casey ruckman on the line.
We get a chance from the kick-in but a turnover allows Casey to rebound forward for a goal.
0 - 6
-
Good defensive mark/free to Bauer.
We get it to HF but the kick to runners (including Green) running to the open goalsquare goes over their heads and trickles for a point.
Casey goes coast to coast for a goal. We can't stop them defensively going the other way rebounding out of our F50.
1 - 13.
-
Ball-up 40 out. Casey pinged for a throw. Set shot by May from 45. Misses to the right.
2 - 13
Ross with 5 disposals already.
-
Bauer doing well on Ben Brown so far wins the free on the wing. Gets to Ross who goes across ground and it eventually gets to Cooper 45 out. Kick falls short again but Olden wins the free. Kicks the goal :gotigers.
Rich 1.2-8
Casey 2.1-13
-
We've had a couple of good chances out the back in the last 5 mins but basic skill errors and fumbles by our VFL-listers has cost us.
ps. You can't just drop the ball in the tackle, ump.
-
Nice run and poise by Ross finds Olden on the siren 48 out. Again, we can't make the distance. No score.
Quarter time
Richmond 1.2-8
Casey 2.4-16
Goal: Olden
Actually, done well enough in the contested footy/stoppages lead by Ross and Dow. Problem is we have too many VFL-listers who aren't clean or not strong enough in the tackle against Casey's AFL-listers like Hahms. Not sure if there's a breeze or not but we had 3 shots from 40-ish out that failed to make the distance.
El Nour went off with a knee. Not sure how bad. So that's another tall down in our VFL side by the sound of it :-\.
-
Stats to 1/4 time:
Disposals: 89 - 87
Clearances: 11 - 6
Inside 50s: 11 - 12

Dow 7
Bauer 5
Banks 3
Green 2
https://www.afl.com.au/vfl/matches/5142#player-stats
-
Green push forces the OOTF at HB. It eventually gets to McDonagh 45 out. Floats it out to the right but it doesn't swing back enough.
9 - 16
-
Throw-in deep in our forward pocket. Free to May in the ruck 25m out. Goal! :gotigers
Rich 2.3-15
Casey 2.4-16
-
Sheesh that was great play by us off the turnover :o. Street in the middle to Hicks on the run who goals :gotigers.
Rich 3.3-21
Casey 2.4-16
A lesson to our seniors that being undermanned doesn't mean you can't show effort in the contest.
-
Ben Brown misses his shot. We go coast to coast and get it out the back and Nathan runs into an open goal :gotigers.
Rich 4.3-27
Casey 2.6-18
-
Keep a eye on young May apparently has alot of talent.
-
We're feeding off Casey's missed shots. Another effective coast to coaster. Melville wins the free 40 out and goals :gotigers.
Rich 5.3-33
Casey 2.7-19
-
Throw-in on the wing. Ross then Street get it forward. Free for front on contact but the advantage is paid and Faimalo goals :gotigers.
Rich 6.3-39
Casey 2.9-21
-
Banks ping from 50 is OOTF.
-
Keep a eye on young May apparently has alot of talent.
Just saw it then. That was excellent gather below the knees and dummy.
Ends up in goal to Nathan.
Rich 7.3-45
Casey 2.9-21

Half-time

Goals: Nathan 2, May, Olden, Melville, Hicks, Faimalo.
Not always perfect but it's effective. What stands out is the effort, intensity and discipline across the team. As I said a lesson to the AFL side.
Ross is easily BOG so far.

Both teams struggling to kick straight at that end.

Seriously, ump! How was that deliberate?
-
To all you boys giving us the almost ball by ball coverage it’s magnificent .. much appreciated

Centre clearance and Ross nicely weighted kick finds McDonagh 20 out. We get it straight back. Goal! :gotigers
Rich 8.4-52
Casey 3.10-28
-
Bauer has been very good in defence but made a bad blue there. Went for the flying spoil and missed and gifted McDonald who stayed down an easy goal.
52 - 34
-
Here come the umps ::). That was not HTB. Charity shot on goal for Casey. Thankfully they missed.
52 - 35
-
Throw-in on F50. Ross through traffic and his weird floater goals through :gotigers.
Rich 9.4-58
Casey 4.11-35
-
Green one-handed juggling mark. Finds Ross on 50. Goes to the corridor 25m out. Melville roves and dribbles a goal :gotigers
Rich 10.4-64
Casey 4.12-36
-
Melville courageous mark under the high ball. To Olden in the centre who finds Ross 45 out. Kicks it. Goal! :gotigers
Rich 11.4-70
Casey 4.12-36
-
Nice rugby throw!
Goal to Casey.
70 - 42
-
Come on ump! Casey player drops ball in the tackle. Play on!
Goal to Casey.
70 - 48
The issue at the moment is Casey are on top in the centre clearances.
-
Downfield free to Casey. Another goal to them.
70 - 55
-
Bauer intercept mark in defence. Long to Green on the wing who bounces to 55. Scrubber kick inside 50 bounces through a bunch a people. Nathan grubbers a goal :gotigers.
Rich 12.4-76
Casey 7.13-55
-
Bad clearing kick out of D50 and Casey goal.
76 - 61
-
Panicking now. Making poor decisions. Need the 3/4 bell.
-
If only Green could kick. Had an open teammate 20m away inside 50 just before the siren and again scrubbed it.
-
3/4 time
Richmond 1.2 7.3 12.4-76
Casey 2.4 2.9 8.13-61
Goals: Nathan 3, Ross 2, Melville 2, May, Olden, Hicks, Faimalo, McDonagh.
What changed in the last 15 mins was Casey got well on top in the clearances and especially the centre clearances. That meant even when we got the ball we had to start from our D50 which boxed us in and opened us up to turnovers.
-
Stats to 3/4 time:
Disposals: 283 - 247
Clearances: 27 - 34 .... ( 7 - 18 in that 3rd qtr so it totally flipped and we got smashed :help )
Inside 50s: 31 - 47
Tackles: 21 - 27
Hitouts: 23 - 47
Frees: 17 - 10 .... ( 3 - 5 in that 3rd qtr )

-
Teal wanted to come out to the near side. Banks told him to go the other way. Teal slipped turning and was pinged. Lucky Casey missed.
76 - 62
-
Terrible defending. Asleep allowing that short pass inside our D50. Goal to Casey.
76 - 68
-
Not pretty. Ross does a Pickett turn in the middle. We get it inside 50. Loose ball. Tigers fighting against each other as well lol. Melville gets the handball receive and goals :gotigers
Rich 13.4-82
Casey 9.14-68
-
Melville quick kick forward falls into the arms of Bilston-McGillen on 50. Kicks it. Goal! :gotigers
Rich 14.4-88
Casey 9.15-69
-
Good switch of play on transition. But we only get a point out of it.
89 - 69
-
Goal to Casey.
89 - 75

Ball-up 35 out and Olden gets the free for too high. Misses.

Good forward pressure. Ross dodges and weaves but his trickling shot misses.
Then poor team defence from the kick-in. Casey goes coast to coast for goal.
92 - 81
-
Dumb at the centrebounce by the sweeper. Runs towards the ball and allows the easy centre clearance out the back. Lucky Ben Brown missed.
92 - 82
-
Green long to the pocket. Nathan slips over and it's rushed.
93 - 82
-
Scrap in our F50 and Bilston-McGillen gets the free for too high 40 out. Gives off to McDonagh who misses.
94 - 82
-
Ross bumped as he blazes away from 55 and kicks it OOTF.
-
SIREN!
Won by 12 points :gotigers
-
Thanks for the updates

Final Score
Richmond 1.2 7.3 12.4 14.10-94
Casey 2.4 2.9 8.13 11.16-82
Goals: Nathan 3, Melville 3, Ross 2, May, Olden, Hicks, Faimalo, McDonagh, Bilston-McGillen.
A win against the odds based on workrate as a team and taking your chances in front of goal. A lesson to our AFL side.
-
Terrific win
-
Ross was clear BOG.
Dow was solid. Better first half than second. Had 7 clearances (although the Dees got on top in the area in the second half).
Bauer gave Tom McDonald a bath and kept Ben Brown quiet when he was on him.
Banks was solid across HBF as a link up player.
Green fought hard but let down by his poor footskills.
VFL-listers:
Brindley did extremely well in the ruck despite being well undersized.
Teal was excellent down back. Best game by a mile he's played.
Bracher's best game for us too by a clear margin.
Only negative was El Nour going off early with some kind of a knee injury. So we're down another tall (defender).

RICHMOND 1.2 7.3 12.4 14.10 (94)

-----------------------------------------------------------------
Richmond survived a last-quarter onslaught by Casey, inflicting its first loss of 2023 with a meritorious 12-point win on the road on Sunday afternoon.
The Tigers set-up the win with a six-goal blitz in the second quarter, the final score board glowing in the golden sun, 14.10 (94) to 11.16 (82).
Richmond ventured south-east to Casey Fields where the undefeated Demons waited for their round five clash.
Casey was stocked with AFL talent, with twin towers, Ben Brown and Tom McDonald presenting imposing figures in attack.
The discrepancy of availability was like water off a duck’s back though for the unflappable Tigers.
Thomson Dow and Jack Ross led the charge from the opening bounce with their physicality and creativity by hand and foot.
The Tigers had poise forward of centre that had been missing at times in 2023, as Garrett McDonagh was found multiple times on the lead inside 50.
The Demons did kick the opening two goals, but then Richmond found its range.
The returning Brad Melville’s shot on goal dropped short where Cam Olden displayed the benefit of keeping your eye on the ball as he sprung and marked strongly.
Olden slotted the goal and got the ball rolling for the travelling Tigers.
Baby-faced tall, Archie May drew Richmond closer four minutes into the second term.
The Tigers scorching heat around the ball triggered an avalanche of goals, with the visitors rattling off five on the trot whilst constricting the life out of the Demons.
Richmond swiftly flipped the script and headed into half-time 24 points to the good.
The Tigers were ferocious and maniacal — their hallmark for over half a decade.
The third quarter was a goalfest, with 11 goals kicked between the two sides, which had fans casting their gaze to the timekeepers' box with the term running 36:51.
Casey gained an edge between the arcs, slotting 6.4 and dragging the margin back to 15 points by the final break.
Richmond managed to slot five goals of its own, two of them coming via the reliable right-boot of Ross.
The midfielder was incomparable, finishing with 27 disposals and two goals.
The Demons had their tails up in the last quarter, and the anxiety levels on-and-off the field reached fever pitch.
Richmond was able to withstand Casey’s surge, defending like their life depended on it.
The Tigers were able to control the tempo of the game, as they battened down the hatches in the frantic final minutes.
Melville bobbed up with his third goal, as Dow, Ross, Olden and skipper, Lachlan Street held firm in the furnace.
Jacob Bauer continued his upward trajectory as a bonafide swingman, standing Brown from wire-to-wire.
The 20-year-old has the enviable blend of athleticism, skill and smarts and is continuing to add layers and nuance to his defensive skillset.

Casey rolled by Richmond in the VFL today, and @ozrobbo tells us it was the Demons' first loss at home since Round 16, 2019, against Geelong - 1373 days. Good stat from Michael.

I like Bauer's reaction to the oppo kicking a goal in quarter one and at the end of the game.

VFL Report: Round 5
Richmond VFL coach Steve Morris provides a summary of how the Tigers’ players performed in Sunday's 12-point win over Casey at Casey Fields.
Jack Ross (31 disposals, 10 marks, eight inside-50s, six tackles, two goals)
"Standout performer on the ground. He stood out in every aspect, his attack on the footy was first-class and he finished with six tackles. He used the ball beautifully to hit the scoreboard heavily as well."
Thomson Dow (26 disposals, seven clearances, five inside-50s)
"He teamed up really well with Jack Ross to lead the way with seven clearances. I thought his lateral movement and use by hands was a real standout."
Jacob Bauer (21 disposals, 12 rebound-50s, five marks)
"He's been a revelation since going back. His work in the air is getting better each week and I thought he made some really good high-percentage decisions on defence and his ball use has been a highlight over the last three weeks."
Sam Banks (19 disposals, four marks, three tackles)
"He's a really promising young player who we've seen some fantastic work from in the last few weeks. His link-up play and defensive running has been a standout and it's great to see him get some reward for the work he's putting in week to week."
Steely Green (eight disposals, five inside-50s, four marks)
"Low numbers from Steely, but high impact. I thought his run, speed and energy were highly noticeable. He's a very exciting player for us and he's bought into what we're trying to achieve at VFL level as much as anyone has."
