HARDWICK TO QUIT RICHMOND IN BOMBSHELL COACHING CALL
Tom Morris
SEN
22 May 2023
Triple premiership Richmond coach Damien Hardwick has decided to quit the club.
With 36 games remaining on his contract, it’s understood Hardwick will speak publicly as early as Tuesday to confirm his decision.
It’s unclear precisely why Hardwick has reached this conclusion or whether he will coach one more game or not.
Sources with knowledge of the situation believe general burnout is a factor.
Monday was a scheduled players’ day off at Punt Road and Hardwick was expected to inform the playing group on Tuesday morning.
The Tigers have won three of a possible 10 matches this season and look likely to miss finals.
Hardwick will be remembered as an icon of Richmond. After a mixed start and three consecutive elimination finals defeats, he was the key subject in a wide-ranging review at the end of 2016.
The Tigers decided to stick with him and it paid dividends with three premierships in four years and the creation of a yellow and black dynasty.
Though his win-loss ratio of 56 percent appears modest, it does not tell the full story. Hardwick’s chaotic game style defined an era and allowed Dustin Martin to evolve from a star into an all-time great.
Hardwick’s resignation could set off a chain of events around the country, with Stuart Dew’s position at Gold Coast not secure despite holding a contract for 2024.
Hardwick is a premiership player at Essendon (2000) and Port Adelaide (2004) and it’s the latter club which would surely entertain bringing him in.
Whether it accelerates Port’s August timeline to discuss Ken Hinkley’s future remains to be seen.
The Power are 8-2 but its president David Koche has consistently maintained there will be no decision on the out of contract Hinkley until the back end of the season.
The 50-year-old Hardwick is Richmond's longest serving coach, having overseen 291 games in a stint lasting 13-and-a-half years.

It has never been the same dynamic since he decided to renege on his vows to his wife.
Who knows how it effected the players (and wags).
Even if it’s on a subconscious level his personal integrity is compromised and his own words lose some of their meaning.
-
Jon Ralph just said he spoke to Neil Balme who doesn't believe it to be true. We'll find out tomorrow.
-
Whateley on AFL360 just said a text message was sent at 7pm to all RFC staff saying there will be a meeting tomorrow morning.
-
Tom Morris career is at the cross roads, if he has gone early and incorrect on this he is surely done for good. This is an enormous enomrous story if true.
Not many coaches just quit halfway through the year.
-
Stunned!!! I thought he would at least coach till the end of his contract.
-
It’s a shock but it also makes sense in a way. Had one last crack with some new recruits and it hasn’t worked, now he’s burnt out. Been at the helm for a long time. Always said he wouldn’t stick around for a rebuild and now that’s what we need.
-
Robbo on AFL360 saying Dimma quitting now allows the Club to make the tough decisions on the future of our champion vets. Dimma now avoids having to make these calls himself.

Damien Hardwick to quit Richmond in shock coaching call
By Caroline Wilson and Jake Niall
The Age
May 22, 2023 — 7.35pm
Richmond coach Damien Hardwick is set to quit Richmond, The Age has confirmed.
The Tigers will hold a press conference on Tuesday to make the announcement, which will be effective immediately.
Hardwick, 50, informed Tigers CEO Brendon Gale of his decision on Monday and has started calling players to tell them, according to a club source.
His departure will be immediate, with assistant coach Andrew McQualter expected to take the coaching reins for Sunday’s match against Port Adelaide at the MCG.

Honestly job well done - Guy deserves his statue out the front of punt road .
Change can be goood . Might reinvigorate a few .
-
Agree, can't coach and play forever. Statue is warranted.
I will say tho, having George quit just after the list lodgement and Hardwick quitting after 10 games. In hindsight these are more timely and we could have Clarkson instead of North.
-
At the end of 2016 Damien Hardwick was on 74 wins after 157 games as coach, the 4th fewest wins of any V/AFL coach after that many games in charge.
95 games later he lifted up a premiership cup as coach for the third time.

I’m shocked. I have a feeling this will be the start of a very down period of time for rfc

Who would still currently be on leave. The club he went to wouldn't change the Hawthorn situation, in fact being us rather than North it likely would've amplified it & made it even worse. :shh

Damien Hardwick won't quit until tomorrow so if we could keep this quiet until he tells his players that would be great.

“IT’S SO UNUSUAL”: HEALY’S IMMEDIATE REACTION TO HARDWICK’S SHOCK COACHING CALL
Seb Mottram
SEN
22 May 2023 7:45pm
Gerard Healy says he’s shocked by Damien Hardwick’s decision to walk out on Richmond mid-season.
SEN’s Tom Morris broke the news that the triple-premiership coach would leave Punt Road with an announcement to come tomorrow. It’s understood burnout contributed to the decision.
Reacting to the news on SEN’s Sportsday, Healy pondered how Hardwick made up his mind given he played an active role in recruiting high-profile midfield duo Tim Taranto and Jacob Hopper and the end of last year.
“It would be a challenging decision because he clearly would have been involved in convincing a couple of blokes to come to the club and sign long-term contracts,” Healy said minutes after learning the news.
“I think they would have assumed he’d be there for the ride.
“They’re all human stories and circumstances change. This is a shock to everyone in footy.”
The 1988 Brownlow Medallist now can’t see Hardwick joining a second club for the 2024 season.
“You wouldn't have thought so (that he’d have a year off),” Healy added.
“It would seem most unusual to be leaving a club with burnout and then taking up the reigns (somewhere else).
“The footy season starts in September. It doesn’t start in March next year, it starts in late September, the draft and the trade period is on, you’ve got to be appointed before then and then the circle starts again.”
But Hardwick’s decision comes at strange timing. The Tigers were only just edged out by Essendon in a one-point loss on Saturday night, a game they arguably deserved to win.
Richmond has still won two of its last three games and knocked off the reigning premiers in Geelong less than a fortnight ago. The club is less than two wins out of the top eight.
“It’s so unusual. It’s Round 10 and they’re still a mathematical chance to play finals. It’s an extraordinary announcement from Tom and it’s going to be interesting to the man himself (Hardwick) when he fronts the media tomorrow,” Healy stated.

No matter what happens Dimma is a true legend of the club. We all are indebted to him for what he did for the club.
But .. the game plan did look tired. Change is not always a bad thing.

I wonder how the players who signed and stayed on for this season feel ? Hopper, Taranto, Jack, Cotchin all joined in to play for Hardwick. Must be a strange feeling

Agree in many ways WP, but at in elite performance environment which famously was built around trust, embracing strengths no focussing on weaknesses, family first, good person first good footballer 2nd. I don't blame people having the opinion that this was a large catalyst of us falling from our peak.
Plenty of standards have dropped, from injury management, discipline free kicks and 50m penalties, decision making, failing to win close ones, giving up leads.
I don't think it's a insult to Dimma to suggest this ruined our club, it didn't and he is entitled to do what ever he wants with his life but as a father figure to many at the club this would have had a significant impact on his image, respect, and authority regarding meeting standards.
I hold no grudges about the impact it would have had it is what it is.

Apparently new girlfriend was up there working, doing different duties, which most of them found odd.
Mrs Hardwick flew up for a surprise visit and got a big surprise herself.
That's from the mouth of a player on the list during that period (now delisted).
Also the quarantine hubs were a joke, people throwing cocaine bags over the fence for them basically every day apparently lol.

There's a word that you've used in there and that's weaknesses. While you said that we don't focus on them, the Club does still embrace people's flaws and by extension weaknesses.
I can only go by the conversations I've had with the players I sponsor and I trust what they tell me and from that I don't believe it has had the impact that many seem to believe

TBH, I have no clue.
But I can only surmise from what I know of the impact (if true) of what infidelity creates and the reaction (if true) from Mrs Hardwick.
So worst case scenario, if true, would no doubt have at minimum a subconscious effect on the players and thus his own words lose influence.
Maybe deep down he knows his words aren’t having the same effect they once did.
That wouldn’t be a factor at a new club so maybe he cut his losses before the whole ship sinks.
-
Feel for Benny Gale during this time.
Peggy gone, Dimma gone. Cotch and Jack to go within a few months.
He was keen on AFL CEO gig that he would have got. Now he is such with an enormous task of repairing what he famously repaired all those years ago.
-
I've always liked the fact Damien Hardwick, even back when he was a player, had the courage of his convictions, wouldn't suck up to people for political reasons or his own advancement, but was still affable and smart. And whatever he does next, he'll always be a Richmond great.

Hardwick’s shock call a sign of the times
ByPeter Ryan
May 22, 2023 — 8.23pm
The AFL coaching landscape is getting madder every week but Damien Hardwick’s decision to step aside as Tigers coach after 10 rounds is the maddest development yet.
His decision took everyone outside the Tigers by surprise, and if anyone at Richmond saw the decision brewing they kept it well hidden.
It underlines what a tough, unrelenting job being a senior coach is, particularly if you are striving to find the motivation to scale football’s mountain for a fourth time, with a new group in the same jumpers, who you need to teach the same tricks all over again
Perhaps in the post-COVID world where evaluation of what matters is part of the zeitgeist, Hardwick is showing the side that endeared him to his players and staff.
Hardwick will be most disappointed he did not get to inform his players before the news broke because he was a players’ man.
He defended them to the hilt from start to finish, even when his defences sometimes seemed unreasonable to the real world. He had players board at his place. He invested his whole being, with even his marriage breakdown being a public event.
However, Hardwick lived by the motto never complain, never explain. He did not seek out relationships within the media but could be pleasant and humorous company if encountered in his downtime. He could also be direct and occasionally narky if he thought the bounds of basic decency had been breached. But he got on with things, away from the glamour and razzmatazz.
Under his tutelage the Tigers eventually became feared and ruthless and winners, winning three flags in four years in a golden run that gave long-suffering fans such joy.
The great irony is that the champion of that era - Dustin Martin - who battled with motivation in recent seasons is just regaining his desire, as the coach who handled him so well is losing his, either momentarily or beyond.
Hardwick will be in demand. If West Coast decide their time with Adam Simpson is up or if Stuart Dew is no longer the right fit for the Gold Coast, Hardwick is sure to get calls from them. But it would offend him to think he would seek another’s job, particularly ones he has played with or coached alongside.
We wait to hear from Hardwick for the reasons behind his decision. Perhaps the kick from Essendon’s Sam Durham that saw Richmond steal defeat from victory again convinced him it was best for the club and for him to take a break, reputation and relationships intact, the Richmond imperative to keep moving forward that Hardwick instilled alive in his last act.
Perhaps watching what the game had done to his great friend Alastair Clarkson made him reflect on what was being sacrificed in the pursuit of a game. Only Hardwick can say.
There is one thing for sure. The bombshell would sure do what he thought was necessary for media nowadays: get some clicks.
That the coach got to go on his terms shows how much he - and others such as CEO Brendon Gale - have changed Richmond.

anyone know what time the meeting is scheduled to be held? I am driving through and will drop in.

Robbo on AFL360 saying Dimma quitting now allows the Club to make the tough decisions on the future of our champion vets. Dimma now avoids having to make these calls himself.
For about the only time i agree with That imbecile.
It has been obvious for ages that the club has found it too hard to make the tough decisions. in that i dont just blame Hardwick.
Its clear he cannot make those calls and now they realise a rebuild is a must.
He has found a way to not make calls on players he has just got too close too and in recent years it has hurt us imo.
Personally i think in a lot of ways the style will still work well it does work look at the pies.
We just need to have more class and size. There has been changes to the game and our drafting has not changed to those changes imo..
I think if he does go then at seasons end we need to look at other areas as well. The two most important are List Management and as mentioned recruiting. Great development coaches are also needed.
That is if its the rebuild path which i think is the path we need to take.I also think we need to find someone who can keep evolving the way we play.
His legacy well the 2017 flag was one of the greatest moments ive been thru. To get two others as well thats an awful lot of cream on top. For that i will forever be grateful.
It sort of spoilt it for me though. the only thing that kept me going was the waiting to see a premiership.
Have for many many years been disgruntled with the way the game has gone and once we won those flags the disgruntlement has just increased to the point where yes i got my long awaited premiership but the game itself is hardly worth watching,The need to keep watching had been appeased.
getting some long needed success meant the focus went to the game itself and just how poor it has become.
Not sure how good a coach he is but the first step is to get the players onside believiing in you and playing for you and also backing those players in. that part no one can deny.
Personally i have believed for a fair while the coach is just the front man and he is just a cog in the overall wheel.

If they all knew and it impacted their respect for Dimma, it sure didn’t impact how they played winning 10/13 in the hub on the way to the flag…..
So if they knew, and were witnessing it first hand and couldn’t escape, why did it only start impacting them 6 months after the fact?

I think the fact we are now a leaky club speaks volumes where we are at and probably need a whole overhaul. Since 2020 things just haven't been the same as they were between 2017-2019. We aren't a mess we just aren't acting like an elite club and not playing like one. Time to review what is working and what isn't and get back to where we should be. Change can be positive.
Agree who ever had leaked this needs to go, absolutely shameful.

Oddly enough Wallace announced his resignation after round 10, 2009, which kicked all this off to begin with. Even he coached a farewell game in round 11 though.

Damien Hardwick quits Richmond: All the reaction after three-time premiership coach’s shock call
Craig McRae was stunned by Damien Hardwick’s decision to quit, but the former Tigers assistant coach, who served under him, has lauded Hardwick’s contribution to the game.

HeraldSun
May 23, 2023
Damien Hardwick coached with “courage” in the face of one of football’s most taxing jobs, current Collingwood coach and former Richmond assistant Craig McRae said on Monday night.
Just 48 hours after Richmond’s one-point loss to Essendon in the Dreamtime at the ‘G game, Hardwick sensationally revealed his decision to quit with 18 months remaining on his contract.
Richmond staff were on Monday night called to an all-club meeting scheduled for Tuesday morning.
McRae said coaching was “a tough job” and that he had been shocked by Hardwick’s call to step down after 14 years as senior coach.
“I’m not going to lie to you. It’s relentless,” McRae said on Fox Footy.
“You get tired. You’ve got to find energy sources. You’re constantly trying to find the right balance to find the right energy to get to your playing group.
“You find the energy for your players and then you get home and you’re exhausted and your wife and family want you to find energy, too.
“This is a tough job. But I’m grateful for it. I know it’s a moment of time in my life ... but you’ve got to find the balance. And he’s done it a long time.”
McRae, who served as Hardwick’s assistant coach from 2017 to 2020, said the timing of the announcement had come to his surprise.
“Having worked with Dimma, he’s an incredible coach and he’s his own person,” he said.
“I’m sure that Richmond footy club will salute him well.”
Richmond launched a full-scale review at the end of 2016 and ultimately backed in Hardwick, who delivered a premiership just 12 months later.
“(When I joined the club) one of the great things Dimma was doing was developing a list to make finals .. his ability just to back himself in and make strong decisions and play young players at the back end of 2016, it took a lot of courage,” McRae recalled.
“He copped a lot of flak for it.
“At that time, the ability for the board and other parts of the business to back him in...2017 was a remarkable year. He changed the game in a lot of ways.
“These memories (of our premiership wins) last forever. I’m so fortunate for my time at Richmond and grateful for having worked with Dimma. He’s an incredible coach.”
A decrease in hunger of as little as “one per cent” may have sparked Hardwick’s decision to walk away from Punt Road, according to former Collingwood coach Nathan Buckley.
It was reported on Monday night that burnout was a factor in the game’s longest-serving current coach’s call.
Ex-Collingwood coach Nathan Buckley, who left the Magpies in 2021, said Hardwick may have felt “not quite as hungry”.
“It’s a little bit about reading the curve and reading the trend, I suppose,” he said on Fox Footy.
“Every coach, especially if you’ve been as successful as Damien Hardwick ... needs to ask himself that question. Am I going to coach the dip?
“This game is so hard to stay up for as long as maybe it might have been 20, 30 years ago. It is cyclical.
“This might be a sign that he doesn’t feel like he has the energy to be able to put in, that he’s not quite as hungry. It might only be one or two per cent off.
“Only he would know exactly what it is. He’s the only one who knows how he feels internally.”
Buckley said “in the end, you are human”.
“You only have so much bandwidth. You nearly deny your own welfare at times to do this job.
“Only he would know what he’s presenting and whether he’s got the energy.
“It shouldn’t surprise us at all if this comes to fruition.”

I’m actually quite sad this morning. Dimma had been coach since I was 13. Shared so many frustrating losses together ( Gold Coast after the siren ptsd ). I went to school in Geelong and as the only Richmond supporter especially when we were poo it ducked. To win those 3 flags is truely something special and I certainly had my doubts whether he was the right man or not but he definitely was. To turn it around after 2016 is an amazing effort and he will be remembered as the best coach in our history. I hope he doesn’t go to another club.
Times they are a changing !

Excellent post. :clapping
For whatever reasons (and I have my opinion on this) our standards aren’t the same.
Craig McCrae when talking about his players last night commented about the high standards his players uphold.
He said to Robbo and Gerard last night,
“the players give us a lot of feedback. The standards they set themselves. You come to watch us train and you’ll see how high the level we apply for ourselves. There’s no reasons to have concerns or lack of trust in our preparations. So we rock up with a lot of confidence we are going to deliver a certain standard because that what’s we’ve seen during the week.
-
How this got out to the media is puzzling very poor and unprofessional. Without a doubt since our last flag club has dropped it standards on and off the field and rested on it's morals.
-
According to the HeraldSun, Dimma arrived at Punt Rd around 8.30am and now players & officials are arriving.

Let's be honest, this isn't a great look for the club. I left a job after Covid because of burnout but I only left quickly because the workplace was also toxic. If I'd been working somewhere I loved and felt supported I would have stayed a bit longer and done things in an orderly way. For Dimma to just up stumps and leave mid-season indicates to me that something else is wrong, because if it's important symbolically to support Cotch to 300 when he's not quite there anymore then it's just as important to get Dimma to the end of the season and have him leave in the right way.
Maybe I'm wrong and everything's great and he's just done, but I don't really buy it. Interesting to hear what everyone has to say at 10:30. Triple premiership winning coaches shouldn't really be leaving mid season in this manner. Even if 'it's time' I don't think anyone feels good about these circumstances whatsoever. Very bitter taste.

You know when you are cooked. Dimma looked cooked after the ARC fiasco last year and who could blame him. He wasn't delivering 100% this year and he has made the right call.
A new era is upon the club with Peggy, Dimma, Cotch and Jack all gone and Benny likely gone at the end of the year. Have to hope like hell they can convince Balmey to stay on a few more years to oversee the new leadership team.
In Balmey we trust.

It seemed like he has simply lost the playing group. Perhaps he realised this and decided the time was right to call it quits
If that is the case I applaud him for making the call now.

That's my suspicion too. Not that anything nasty happened, just that he realised he didn't have them on side anymore. Even in 2016 I think he had the group. That's always been his 1-wood -- his relationship with his players. If that had eroded I can see why he'd stop immediately. Otherwise I can't see how he'd leave immediately (personal circumstances aside, but even that would lend itself to time off rather than resignation).

Lots of emotions.
Very proud how far our footy club has come I grew up with. KB and the revolving door of coaches through the nineties. Dimma sold our place beautifully for any coach wanting a top top job. Made me think why leave but ge he looked happy in his decision.
A bit sad that it's the end of an era which will be capped off with Cotch and Jack farewells.
Benny G looked absolutely shattered.

Also I took away from that, that I'm very confident we will be OK. We aren't in crisis like many clubs are when a coach leaves. We will be ok in short and long term.
I still have an issue about the leaker. May have been Yoko Ono Alex who knows.

Really empty feeling.
Feels like everyone just left after Christmas and there's nothing but an empty house and washing up to do. But at least that's a measure that your really liked the ones you were with and the time you spent together.
I feel for B. Gale. Hopefully people get around him and support him like he has supported so many because unlike retirees and Dimma he has to go again.
Winning 3 from being a basket case -- the compromised drafts, Covid, the emotional nature of our footy program and the physically committed style of footy we played -- it's taken a lot out of everyone. The air just got let out of the tires today. Hopefully there's some good energy around to pump everyone back up.
I'm flat as a tack.

Agree 10000% on BGale. The guy deserved the AFL CEO gig, got stuffed around and now he's left to pick up the pieces of the place he built from nothing.
I think Jack leaving will be the hardest, I don't know why, as much as Cotch is our captain and leader, I feel Dusty and Jack are our X Factor face of the clubs success. That'll be on par with Warney's walk off the G. Probably worse actually.

Yeah I was thinking about that. Because he left with grace and good wishes I'm sure Dimma will be back refreshed after a few months away and be there as they leave the ground. That will be a bittersweet moment for sure.
I think for people of a certain age (I'm 34) this is tough in its own way in that we only know success at Richmond with Hardwick. I couldn't imagine being early 20s right now -- he'd be all you'd ever known!
Reflecting a lot on his time in charge at the moment -- all the ups and downs. I said in 2015 I'd always be grateful to him for restoring Richmond as a respectable club with back-to-back-to-back finals appearances. And then he delivered so much more.
Yeah, just really flat atm. Have to let it settle and the new hope and energy will come. Life goes on.

He's simply brilliant.

Damien Hardwick Statement
By Richmond Media
23 May 2023
Richmond senior coach Damien Hardwick today announced his resignation, effective immediately.
Hardwick, who was appointed as senior coach of Richmond in 2010, coached the Club for a record-breaking 307 games, winning 170 of those and steering the Tigers to three premierships (2017, 2019, and 2020).
Hardwick said he no longer had the energy required to continue as senior coach.
“Coaching is all-consuming, it’s relentless, and you must be totally committed. I have been thinking about this decision for some time, and I feel now is the right time to step away,” Hardwick said.
“I love this Club, the players, staff, and fans too much to continue to coach when I don’t feel like I’m 100% in – you can’t coach like that, and it would be doing the wrong thing by everyone.
“My time as Richmond coach has been the most fulfilling of my time in football. Richmond is an incredible Club full of amazing people. What we have achieved together is something I will cherish for the rest of my life.
“I will be forever grateful for the opportunity Richmond gave me and the unwavering support I have always had from John, Peggy, Brendon, and the rest of the Board. I also thank them for their understanding when I told them of my decision.
“I have been blessed to work with some great coaches and players, and I thank all of them. I have built some amazing friendships that will remain for life.
“I would particularly like to thank Tim Livingstone and Blair Hartley – wonderful football people who do a brilliant job managing our football program and will continue to set the Club up for future success.
“And to the mighty Tiger Army, thank you for your magnificent support. The roar of the Richmond crowd will forever ring in my ears.”
Richmond President John O’Rourke said Hardwick had made an extraordinary contribution to the Club.
“Damien is a giant of our Club, and we thank him for everything he has given us over the past 14 seasons,” O’Rourke said.
“While his three Premierships will be the headline, he has given this Club so much more. He taught us about genuine care, connection, and the power of storytelling. He loved his players, and they loved him.
“His decision came as a shock, but it is something he has given serious thought, and we need to respect the decision he has made.
“It is a measure of the man that he has made this decision in what he sees as the best interests of the Club. Selflessness is one of his great qualities; for that, Damien is and always will be revered as a Richmond man.”

It has never been the same dynamic since he decided to renege on his vows to his wife.
Who knows how it effected the players (and wags).
Even if it’s on a subconscious level his personal integrity is compromised and his own words lose some of their meaning.
I know you want to believe "he decided to renege on his vows to his wife" and that you base this on media reports regarding on the breakdown down of his marriage
But none of us know what really happened nor do really know what if any impact the situation had on the playing group
Fair to say I disagree with your commentary but you are most definitely entitled to your view
Even he knew his voice stopped having the same impact it once had.
I certainly have my opinion on why that is the case but I’ll just let Damian Hardwick speak for himself
“It was time for a different voice. I’ve pushed every button I can and I’ve tried to cook the sausages 1000 ways.”

HOW HARDWICK REINVENTED HIMSELF, REFINED COACHING AND REDESIGNED THE GAME
By Gerard Whateley
SEN
23 May 2023
Damien Hardwick’s time at Richmond will come to a close during our time together this morning.
A glorious era that will endure in so many Tiger hearts.
He will have been such an important figure in so many of your lives across the past 14 years.
I imagine there’s an overwhelming sense of gratitude and a debt of loyalty.
While we wait to hear from Dimma, I’d love to give you the platform to share whatever emotions you are feeling as the reality sets in.
Hardwick will leave Punt Road as the club’s longest serving and, alongside Tom Hafey, its most influential coach.
More broadly, he’s a profound figure in the profession and the game.
In his 14 seasons Hardwick reinvented himself, refined coaching and redesigned the game.
He made chaos not only attractive but desirable. Fast footy, forward momentum became essential.
He derived the mantra of embracing imperfection. Ushering in the notion now spoken of as being the goldfish or using the windscreen wipers.
For a club that had twisted itself like a pretzel for decades, Hardwick had the new age Tigers play with a smile, a lightness of being.
Hardwick came to understand connection off the field was more important than anything he could plot on it.
Vulnerability became a religion in the locker room. The Triple H sessions at the core of their being. The aspiration was to be a Richmond Man.
It wasn’t the Xs and Os that created the juggernaut.
In the Hardwick legacy is the powerful case study of a club staying the course.
He survived a much-publicised review in 2016 and an attempted board coup that ran on the platform of sacking the coach – a not unpopular view at the time if we honestly look back.
Hardwick eased his controlling and obsessive ways. His transformation triggered the reinvention of the team.
And sparked a glorious run.
The premierships of ‘17, ‘19 and ‘20 cherished by the Tiger faithful and admired by all who love the game.
Amid the shock I can’t help but feel this is a great way to go.
Sudden and swift rather the protracted way these things tend to play out.
Hardwick had a long running joke with colleagues of walking to the car at half-time and heading to the airport to jump on a flight to Bali.
Metaphorically he’s done something pretty close to that.
This story breaks in so many directions.
Will Hardwick coach again? Who would be the ideal candidate for Richmond? What does a vacancy do to the terrain?
Suddenly it’s a buyers market and historically that sparks a run.
All of that is in play.
But principally this is a chance to honour Damien Hardwick and what he’s done for Richmond.
I hope he coaches on Sunday. If he’d rather not, then I hope he’s there.
It’s hardly a stretch to imagine 90,000 members of the Richmond community filling the MCG to express their love and gratitude to a coach who has given them so much.
And when the battle is over and the arms laid down there has to be a moment to acknowledge who you were fighting for and what it meant to them.

Thank you so much Dimma. You brought premiership success to this club. You brought us out of a horrible drought. You brought enormous joy to supporters. It was the right decision to make. It was a selfless act. You will be remembered as a true legend of this club- a coach who was inspirational, fiercely loyal to his players and who brought the best out of his players.
-
25 years of being mostly a laughing stock and not coming anywhere near any success with only 2 finals appearances. Never in my wildest dreams did I think we could win a flag let alone 3 in 5 years. Dimma played as big a role as anyone in that. Thank you Dimma :bow :cheers :clapping

I appreciate what he said about it being time for a different voice. Makes sense. He clearly is burnt out and when it hits it hits bloody hard.
But you continue to suggest that the reason for this is because of his marriage breakdown and by extension his partner. Earlier in this thread you even suggested that his partner (and yes I saw the rolling emoji) was the person who leaked the story to Morris despite both Morris and Caro saying they got the info from "club insiders".
He paid tribute to her in his presser. Surely that tells us something
I will admit I just get frustrated that people continue to pot someone they don't know, make assumptions based on "apparentlys" and what a gossip columnist wrote on the HUN when as I've said time and time again we don't know what happened.
Time to move on
-
I’m almost certain we won’t have seen the last of Dimma. It’s actually going to be very difficult seeing him in an opposition coaching shirt which I think will most likely as soon as next season.
Probably why he wasn’t going beyond this season anyway. I have an inkling he might have something already planned.
Thank you for an unforgettable ride and thanks for making me eat my words when I wanted you gone at the end of 2016.
The resignation was a class act and a tribute to your love for our club and you will always be remembered as a legend of the Richmond football club (unless you coach Carlscum cheats)
On behalf of all my children and all the family members I made barrack for Richmond and never thought they would see a premiership,
Thankyou thankyou thankyou :cheers

The 48 hours that led to the end of Damien Hardwick’s tenure at Tigerland
It was not unusual for Damien Hardwick and Brendon Gale to catch-up after a Tigers game. However, this time it was different. Go inside the 48 hours that lead to Damien Hardwick’s departure.
Scott Gullan
HeraldSun
May 24, 2023
There was something about the text which set off alarm bells for Brendon Gale.
It wasn‘t unusual for his coach Damien Hardwick to reach out for a catch-up after a game but there was something in the wording of the Sunday morning text which had the Richmond CEO on alert.
The Tigers had suffered a heartbreaking one-point loss the previous evening to Essendon in the Dreamtime Game which meant they were languishing in 14th position on the ladder after 10 rounds.
Things certainly hadn‘t gone the way Gale had hoped for season 2023 and that was playing on his mind as he pulled up to Hardwick’s house in Elwood on Sunday night.
Despite that he still wasn‘t expecting what transpired when he got inside and sat down for a beer with his coach.
The pair had been joined at the hip since they started just days apart back in 2009 and had ridden a roller coaster journey which included three premierships.
Gale‘s concerns about the text were justified. Something was up. Hardwick was cooked. Done. Finished.
For the next couple of hours they shot the breeze, talked about how he‘d reached this moment, recalled the good times and funny times. Gale threw up the idea of a farewell game on Sunday against Port Adelaide but it soon became obvious that wasn’t going to happen.
That wasn‘t Hardwick’s style, he didn’t need a farewell lap and more pats on the back.
It turned out Richmond‘s longest serving coach had made up his mind at the start of the season that this would be it and he wouldn’t be fulfilling the final year of his contract in 2024.
He‘d watched the Michael Jordan documentary The Last Dance over the summer and that had put the idea in his head of putting everything into one last run at it this year.
The recruitment of GWS Giants midfield pair Tim Taranto and Jacob Hopper had given him confidence that he again had the list to contend but it became increasingly apparent in the early rounds that the Tiger train wasn‘t on its tracks.
Hardwick, 50, tried all his tricks to ignite his team but the spark was missing and the coach started to continually ask himself if he was still up for the challenge.
It turned out he no longer was.
After Gale left, Hardwick slept the best he had for a while and then spent Monday reaching out to his senior core of players who were all completely blindsided by the decision.
“I had no idea whatsoever which is a credit to Dimma,” Co-captain Toby Nankervis said.
Hardwick thought he‘d dropped a few clues on Saturday night after the game when got back to Punt Rd for his regular post-match debrief with football manager Tim Livingstone and list boss Blair Hartley.
“Tim and Blair have very much been my lieutenants and I think they picked it up after the game,” Hardwick said. ”Normally after a loss we come back here and have a few drinks and I am straight into the match committee room on the board trying to figure out what the next course of action is.
“I think they probably sensed something when I didn‘t go into that room, I didn’t start pencilling in what was the plan of attack for the review.”
By Monday night the word was out and on Tuesday morning Hardwick became emotional when he addressed the entire playing group.
An hour later he strode into the Maurice Rioli Room at Punt Rd with Gale and president John O‘Rourke for his final press conference. The room was at capacity with players, staff and media while the front row of seats were occupied by his three children, his mother Pam and new partner Alex.
“I sort of wish I wore a better jumper to be honest. I didn‘t realise there would be so many people here,” were Hardwick’s opening words.
For the next 30 minutes he held court, mixing up jokes with choking up on a couple of occasions as he spoke about his love for the Richmond Football Club.
He revealed the idea of walking away had manifested over the past month. He almost did it after the brilliant win over defending premier Geelong a week early but knew how important the Dreamtime Game was to the club plus one of his favourites Nankervis would also make his return against Essendon.
“As a coach you are always questioning yourself,” Hardwick explained. ”It is a lonely job, it‘s a great job and don’t get me wrong I’m incredibly grateful for the opportunity that I received.
“It becomes more apparent as you‘ve had more success, the losses become harder.
“I had a fair indication at the start of the year that I would like this to be my last year. Then when the season didn‘t turn out as much as I would have liked, I started to ask myself the question, `Am I the right man for the job?’.
“I kept asking myself the question more and more and if you keep asking yourself the question, well, you know the answer.
“It became apparent probably two weeks ago that the time was about right. In all honesty, I‘d rather leave too early rather than too late.”
He said the players needed a new voice and he needed a break to “decompress”.
“I pushed every button I can, I have tried to cook the sausages a thousand different ways and I couldn‘t find 1001.”

I really can’t see him coaching as soon as next season if at all.
Maybe when Tassie come into the competition. I’m sure he’d be an ideal hire by the AFL and he’d have a new list with top end talent to build from the ground up after having a few years off to refresh.

‘Tough 48 hours’: Danielle Hardwick on Dimma’s exit
HeraldSun
24 May 2023
Danielle Hardwick has made a sad statement on her ex-husband Damien's bombshell decision to quit as Richmond coach after being a notable absentee from his emotional resignation announcement on Tuesday.
The children she shares with the former Tigers boss were seated in the front row along with his new love, former Richmond staffer Alexandra Crow, who was seen beaming at him as he thanked her, his ex and his family.
'A tough 48 hours,' Danielle told the Herald Sun.
'A lifetime dedicated to D [Damien] and football. Wasn't meant to end this way.'
Hardwick made special mention of his family as he struggled to hold back tears on Tuesday.
'To Danielle and the kids, I'm forever grateful for what you've given me, the support you've given me,' he said.
'And Alex, thanks for the new journey, and obviously your support over the last couple of months has been phenomenal.'

Signposts to end of Hardwick era first emerged in 2020
Caroline Wilson
The Age
May 24, 2023
Damien Hardwick and Brendon Gale on Sunday privately closed their 13-year partnership and the end of Richmond’s first and glorious AFL premiership era.
It was a chilly Melbourne bayside afternoon punctuated by moments of the kind of emotional vulnerability that defined Hardwick’s astonishing 2017 team that started it all. There were beers and there were tears and for Gale a crash course in the seven stages of grief.
But the denial stage didn’t last long because the Tigers boss realised that a load had been lifted from the outgoing coach’s shoulders immediately after he had convinced Gale that his decision was final.
Having witnessed his friend and former football compatriot Alastair Clarkson overstay his welcome at Hawthorn, and having told Gale with every new contract that he would leave when the time was right and not when his signature demanded it, Hardwick told his boss: “I’m done.”
Privately, Hardwick had already decided 2023 would be his last season at Tigerland, and as the losses mounted and the pressure grew, there were plenty of signs his love for the job had deserted him.
Internally and externally, there were mood swings and inconsistency.
But as recently as the Tigers’ unrecognisable loss against the Gold Coast, a Richmond board meeting had doubled down with its support of Hardwick, his coaching team and football strategy.
Throwing himself into the mini-crisis at hand after missing out on the top AFL job, Gale declared that when the Tigers failed “we fail well. We turn in on ourselves and find a way”.
Successive victories in the first two weeks of May and a glimmer of hope were halted by Richmond’s Saturday night Dreamtime nightmare and Hardwick’s football lieutenants noticed a glimmer of a withdrawal as the coach shut up shop for the night.
On Tuesday, the Tigers’ longest-serving coach – unsurprisingly given what he has achieved – described the club as “the love of my life” despite having played in premierships for Essendon and Port Adelaide. Gale seemed visibly moved by that sentiment.
The Richmond boss explained to a group of players who had known only Hardwick as their AFL coach that during his 12 years as a Richmond footballer he had witnessed six coaching departures. Gale’s arrival at Richmond in 1990 coincided with the Save Our Skins campaign at a broke and struggling football club. But then the Tigers’ last grand final was still tangible.
Hardwick came to Richmond in 2010 during the worst losing era in the club’s history. It was a brutal time to be a cellar dweller as the introduction of Gold Coast and GWS removed young talent generally afforded to the game’s biggest losers.
That he rebuilt the team during that time into a dynasty will forever cement him as one of the game’s all-time greats. That he redesigned the game plan – and his man management style – over a three-month pre-season remains another crucial piece of his legacy.
It has been said that Hardwick almost lost his job at the end of 2016 when the hybrid Hawthorn-style game plan of possession at all cost failed him, and he seemed imprisoned by that failure.
In truth, Gale and former president Peggy O’Neal searched for other remedies and the results of their faith was demonstrated in the manic impenetrable new style in Hardwick’s first practice game of 2017 against Port Adelaide at Mount Gambier.
It has been said that Hardwick’s premiership era could have been extended to four flags but for Collingwood in the 2018 preliminary final, but equally it was that failure that perhaps drove the side to the successive flags that followed.
The signposts to the end first emerged in 2020. Hardwick famously struggled with the rigour and restrictions of COVID. He was by no means the only coach to do so, but his outbursts became more frequent as discipline broke down on and off the field.
His marriage to Danielle, his much-vaunted “Mrs Hardwick” and mother of his three children, also broke down that year and the revelation that he had started a relationship with a club staffer caused ructions within and beyond the club.
I wrote at the time that he had tarnished his image and was in danger of tarnishing his legacy. The first was true, but the danger well and truly ultimately averted, although it remains regrettable the difficulties he created for Gale and his team.
It seemed apparent by early 2021 that the Tigers under Hardwick had squeezed every last drop out of their talent, their faith in each other and their system in achieving that third premiership. Dustin Martin stole the show, but the roles played by the likes of Kane Lambert and Bachar Houli and Shane Edwards were a credit to the brilliance of Hardwick and his team.
As the roles broke down, players raised their hands and admitted they’d lost the hunger. Notably David Astbury at the end of 2021 and then early last year Martin left the game for a period and briefly considered quitting. Hardwick coached the team back to finals last year but the reliability that marked 2017-2020 was only sporadic. Not only did he start to doubt himself but also his connection to his players.
Hardwick has walked away from at least $1 million, but will almost certainly coach next year.

Lol, it's such a beat up. She spoke 17 words, possibly under duress outside her front door, and it's a "revelation" that the ex-wife wasn't at the press conference beside Danielle 2.0 -- as revealed by exclusive photos of her ... not being there. She's hardly "not letting it go."
Anyway, I wouldn't begrudge her 17 words on the matter.
I might add that there's some real high quality journalism on show in that piece.
"Danielle had been by her husband’s side through an incredibly successful career in football that’s included premierships as a player with Essendon and Port Adelaide — and also four flags as coach of Richmond."
Looks like they put everything they had into the photo revelation and just had "nothing left in the tank" to research the rest of the story.

Damien Hardwick will be the coach of Port Adelaide next season, according to Fox Footy’s David King.
Fellow SEN panellist Kane Cornes questioned how Richmond fans would respond if Hardwick were to return to the game so soon after his exit, describing it as a potential “bitter taste”.
“Would you be a little bit disappointed if in 12 weeks time he’s got another job?” he said.
“There’ll be job offers everywhere.”
“(Richmond fans could say) he said he’s burnt out and we’ve given up on the season 10 weeks in, but then he’s gone and coached Gold Coast or Port Adelaide a couple of months after.”

Drawing a long bow with Dimma coaching another club, that would intimate he knows RFC is gone, his ego can’t stand it so he has decided to move on to another club who has a premiership window.

It’s not his side anymore, but Damien Hardwick is itching to see Richmond in action.
Just five days after calling time on his illustrious coaching career, Hardwick was decked out in his Tigers gear … only this time he will be watching on as a fan.
The three-time premiership coach had a beer in hand next to his dog on the couch in the post as he prepares to watch the Tigers — led by interim coach Andrew McQualter — up against Port Adelaide at the MCG.
“How long to go?! Carn the Tigs.” Hardwick said in the post.
Richmond goalkicker Jack Riewoldt was quick to point out that Hardwick was getting some early preparation in, given the photo was posted at 10:07am.
“Beers at 10am!!! Haha,” Riewoldt tweeted with a laughing face emoji.
An upset win for the Tiges against the third-placed Power? Dimma will drink to that.

Cotch in the HeraldSun talking about Dimma quitting:
As Richmond skipper, Cotchin raised three premiership cups alongside Hardwick and said he would “never underestimate” the impact of his long-time coach.
“Clearly, he has been a huge part and massive figure of our footy club, but also for our playing group for a long period of time,” Cotchin said.
“Whilst we probably know it’s right and, even after seeing after he announced what he was up to you could just see a sense of relief in the way that he was present, really.
“We will never underestimate the impact that he has had on our lives, not just in footy, but in life. But in saying that the group was really energised and excited about the opportunity that it presented for ‘Mini’, our other coaches and our group.”
Cotchin revealed Hardwick broke the news to him he was stepping down as coach early on Monday in a meeting at his house.
“He contacted me earlier in the morning on Monday and I shot over to his house and sat down with him to hear the news,” Cotchin said.
“It was a relatively brief meeting, obviously he had so much to get through contacting as many people as he could before it broke.
“I’ve always loved Dimma and respected him. Not just him, his family has been a huge part of my family’s life and that will never change.
“Naturally, he is one of those characters that will fight for everything and anything that he is passionate about. I know that the passion was still there, it was just a matter of, as he said in his press conference, feeling like he was not 100 per cent committed which at the end of the day is why he made the decision that it was the right time for him and we totally respect that.”

Asked if he could see himself following in the footsteps of the likes of great coaches Sheedy, Matthews, Mick Malthouse, David Parkin, John Kennedy, Ron Barassi and Allan Jeans to be successful coaches at their first club and move to another, Hardwick said he wanted to stay at Punt Road.
"I'd like to end at Richmond," he said.
"It's hard to say but I think the fact of the matter is I just enjoy our environment so much. Footy clubs are a by-product of their people and I'm very lucky to work with wonderful people who make it what it is. You love coming to work every day. We work incredibly hard but we have a lot of fun doing it.
"Win, lose or draw we've had people come into our organisation and you wouldn't be able to tell if we've won or we've lost. We want you walking in with a smile and out with a smile. As soon as it becomes not fun, that's the day I reckon we'll be leaving the building."

‘Where’s Dimma?’ Hardwick toasts Tigers on his world tour
Peter Ryan
The Age
June 6, 2023 — 5.13pm
On the day Damien Hardwick announced his surprise move to finish up as Richmond coach mid-season, so he could smell the roses, players and staff headed to the nearby London Tavern for lunch.
It was the perfect location to pay tribute to their premiership coach as the pub has Stone and Wood Pacific Ale on tap, so they could propose a toast to ‘Dimma’ with his favourite beer and, as Dylan Grimes said, “turn the page on a chapter of the Richmond book”.
Then it was back to work.
For everyone but Hardwick of course, who spent his first unemployed Sunday on the couch holding aloft a Stone and Wood as he settled in to watch the Tigers take on Port Adelaide.
Last Sunday he was a world away in Denver, Colorado but the party was only just starting as he raised a glass to Tiger fans and club CEO Brendon Gale as he settled in at the perfect time of 9.10pm Saturday to watch the Giants play Richmond.
His timing was good with the Denver Nuggets – which features Traralgon’s Jack White on their roster, the same country town current Tigers coach Andrew McQualter hails from – in between NBA play-off games.
After a bit of digging, Snap Shot had a tip suggesting the bar may have been the old Three Lions Bar on Colfax Avenue (now the DNVR sports bar), but that’s not confirmed. Snap Shot is sure it wasn’t the Dew Drop Inn on 17th Avenue in Denver.
Hardwick may have found 40 people pledging to become Tiger members, but these postcards – which brilliantly break the old rule of don’t be photographed with a beer in your hand – can’t go on, surely.
Richmond’s next match is on Saturday night in Perth and starts at 7.25pm Eastern Standard Time, meaning it will be 3.25am in Denver, 2.25am in Los Angeles or 5.25am in New York or Miami.
Now we’re talking.
Of course, if he shot over to Ibiza on his hold your beer high world tour, it would be a much more pleasant 11.25am.
We look forward to the next instalment of “Where’s Dimma?”

Tigers’ burning question: Did Dimma depart a week or two too late?
Catherine Healey and Jono Baruch
Foxsports
15 June 2023
After the one-point Round 10 loss to Essendon, many critics thought Richmond’s season was done. And with that came coach Damien Hardwick’s resignation as long-time assistant Andrew McQualter stepped in as caretaker coach. While a narrow 10-point loss to the high-flying Port Adelaide immediately followed, the Tigers have shown some grit and determination in the back to back wins over GWS and Fremantle in WA. Sure the five-game losing streak earlier in the year hasn’t helped their plight as finals smokies, but Garry Lyon says he’s impressed with the way Richmond has turned it around under McQualter. “Andrew McQualter has looked at it and said back to the future,” he said On the Couch. “He said let’s get rolling again. It’s not to say they weren’t (invested). He walks in ... and says I’m going to swing some magnets back.” Those changes include sending Liam Baker from defence under Hardwick forward, Shai Bolton as a pure midfielder, Jayden Short from midfield to defence and Trent Cotchin from forward to midfield. It’s worth noting, Richmond are now currently just one and a half wins outside the top eight.

Former Richmond coach Damien Hardwick linked to AFL coaching role
Mitch Keating
zerohanger.com
June 23, 2023 - 7:15pm
Speaking to Triple M, Browne has reported that Hardwick's chances of landing the Suns job are only likely to increase if the club's form under Stuart Dew fails to see them reach the top eight.
"Murmurings in football are absolutely increasing this week that Damien Hardwick will end up at the Gold Coast," Browne said.
"You can debate me whether that's fair on Stuart Dew all you like, but that's what's being discussed in high-level football circles.
"The Gold Coast were uncompetitive against Carlton last week. They were good in the first 20 minutes and then sort of gave up in the way other Gold Coast sides have done in the past.
"That's what frustrates people because they've got so much talent. So I can't place enough importance on this game against Hawthorn, as far as Stuart Dew is concerned.
"Off the back of COVID, it's fair to say a lot of coaches who like living on the Gold Coast would happily go there, good (coaches).
"It could be an active coaching market at the end of the year. There could be interest in the Suns position if it becomes available, including from Damien Hardwick, but the ball is in Stuart Dew's court and the Suns have to beat Hawthorn."
The Age have reported that Hardwick will open discussions with his manager Paul Connors next month after returning from a trip to Europe. It is understood the pair will discuss what the triple premiership coach's aspirations are for the near future.
The Suns job could become one of the most tantalising in the AFL this year given the club's riches of young stars and potential, coupled with the trio of Academy players that are touted as potential first-round draft prospects.

Damien Hardwick declares he wants to coach again
Just weeks after stepping down at Richmond, Damien Hardwick has revealed he misses coaching and wants to return to the hot seat. But when?
Lauren Wood
HeraldSun
June 26, 2023
Damien Hardwick has declared he wants to coach again, admitting “I miss it” just weeks after quitting Richmond.
But he remains unsure when he will step back into any hot seat.
Hardwick stepped away as senior coach at Richmond late last month but said – after a couple of months travelling in Europe from next week – he would be keen to return to the game that he loves.
“I’d be lying if I said I couldn’t see myself doing it,” he said on the Dyl & Friends podcast.
“I love it. I miss it. I’ve been out for two weeks and I wanted to miss it, if that makes sense?
“I need to decompress for a while, I need to go away, I need to reflect. And figure out things that make me good and things that I can sit there and put me in a dark place, as well.”
Hardwick said he needed “a bit of time”.
“But I just love the game … like everyone, I’ve known it for a long time,” he said.
“I’ll go overseas and I’ll still watch the Tigers and watch as many games as I can.
“At some stage I will probably step back in, when that is, I’m not too sure.”
West Coast is under pressure following a 171-point loss to Sydney on the weekend that compounded pressure on coach Adam Simpson.
Hardwick travelled to the United States in the wake of his decision before recently returning to Melbourne to celebrate former skipper Trent Cotchin’s 300th game.
But he conceded a lack of routine had troubled him.
“The one thing that footy does is really (put you in a) routine,” he said.
“All of a sudden you take that away and it’s amazing how quickly (you miss it). You enjoy the first couple of days but then it’s like, ‘Oh, what am I going to do now?’.
“I had a couple of days (when) I sort of decompressed and relaxed and then I said, ‘OK, I’m not very good at this’.
“Footy was such a big part of my life and it sort of defined me.”
In the wide-ranging interview, Hardwick spoke of his emotion in driving to Tallarook to tell his parents of his decision to leave the club, and Richmond’s now-famous backing of him following a challenging 2016 campaign.
He “made the fatal mistake of returning to golf”, which he said had been returned to the backburner after a disastrous solo round, and said that “it’s been a little bit challenging learning how to relax”.
“I need to find out what my next purpose is about moving forward and getting stuck into something,” he said.
“Otherwise I’ll drive myself insane.”
Basking in a European summer in the lead-up to the AFL finals series is a bucket list item that Hardwick is champing at the bit to tick off.
“I’m just going to see as much as I can … European summer, I’ve never had the chance to do it,” he said.
“I’ve got this ridiculous backpack I’ve bought that I’m sitting there regretting … (I’m telling myself) ‘you’re not 23 anymore’. I’ve got to do it, but come on.”
“I thought, god, I’m going to feel like a real tosser over there catching trains … my kids are over there at the same time, so I’m trying to give them some space.
“It’s going to be quite cool to see them and catch up over there.”

Dimma ain't worth it, he was only great purely because he had a great team around him. He was the voice but not the brains. Did he really step away, or was he told to step away?????

LMAO
-
I think dimma was blessed with the best of the best of top end talent in Jack, dusty, cotch, rance. Some really good solid players in grimes, vlastuin, edwards, lambert. But he got the best out of the lesser players like Castagna, butler and the likes which is what makes him such a good coach. I think he could take Carlton to a premiership, they have all the top end talent like we did.
-
Caracella And Leppa were instrumental. And as a player at the time Grigg was vital , due to the fact he has a super intelligent footy brain.

Like I've said before but hey I'm just a troll. Within the four walls they are happy he has now gone. They appreciate all that he has done but happy he has gone. Notice the smiles and spirit within the playing group has lifted.
As for Cornes.. who listens to him anyway.

Gosh I hope not.
Really think they should stick with Dew myself. He's been doing good work. Don't think they're approaching a flag window but definitely think this is the 2015-16 era at RFC where they need to back in their coach and not cut him
-
From Caro:
“My equally firm view is that Damien Hardwick will ultimately be the coach of the Gold Coast Suns and that if there is a caretaker appointed at this stage, it looks like being Steven King.
“I think Damien Hardwick softened the public up to where he’s at with coaching.
“I think he was stale at Richmond, I don’t think he was burnt out with footy.
“I do think that the week Damien Hardwick announced his shock resignation from Richmond was a very difficult week for the Gold Coast Suns and Stuart Dew.
“No one can convince me that the timing of both decisions are not linked. Certainly a lot of people believe that.”

Damien Hardwick will be hard for the Suns to ignore
Damien Hardwick couldn’t have positioned himself better for the Suns coaching role if he had tried, and Gold Coast will find it difficult to ignore him for 2024, writes Jon Ralph.
Jon Ralph
HeraldSun
July 5, 2023
As always, Damien Hardwick’s sense of timing is impeccable.
As a player and coach, he won a Port Adelaide premiership (2004) and two of his three flags at Richmond (2017 and 2020) with perfectly timed grand final second-half surges.
As Richmond’s departing coach, Hardwick could scarcely have orchestrated a better timeline to set himself up if there becomes a vacancy on the Gold Coast throne.
Hardwick is adamant he was burnt out at Richmond and had known this would be his last year for some time.
He is nothing if not brutally honest, and those around him scoff at suggestions he has artfully positioned himself to seize upon premiership teammate Stuart Dew’s role.
But if Gold Coast eventually loses faith that Dew is the man, Hardwick can find a way to eventually take over as Suns coach while having plausible deniability for what’s happened to his mate.
Even if he has casually tossed the hand grenade into the Gold Coast camp by declaring he was keen to coach again.
It was categorically stated in 2021 and ’22 that Dew would be sacked, only for the Suns to back their man.
The backings are the same again, though this time the situation feels different.
The Suns haven’t improved year-on-year, haven’t minimised the seven-goal losses, haven’t thrived despite the return of star forward Ben King to straighten up their attack.
Gold Coast’s public narrative has been carefully worded and clever – continually backing in Dew without ever guaranteeing his contract for next season.
And yet if Dew can’t pull off a coaching miracle and drag the Suns into their maiden finals series this September, the decision ahead would be easy.
Especially given a payout to Dew for his 2024 contract might be $300,000 at best.
Hardwick has jetted overseas on his latest holiday for seven weeks and will be able to return with a decision already made on Dew’s tenure.
He can position his podcast comments last week as a throwaway line even as they made the public aware of what the Suns already knew – he was desperate to coach again next year.
And here is where the Hardwick timing kicks in again.
With three adult kids that don’t require him to endure the Melbourne fishbowl any more, he and partner Alexandra get to move to the Gold Coast where he inherits a list that is easily capable of securing him a sixth AFL flag.
Dew might feel stabbed in the back – especially after premiership coach Alastair Clarkson sniffed around the Suns last year – but Hardwick will be able to claim a clear conscience because he can deny his interest in the job until Dew’s position is decided.
How many coaches in recent memory have been part of a premiership dynasty then found a landing spot so full of potential?
Alastair Clarkson (four flags) was happy to do the hard yards at North Melbourne, Kevin Sheedy (four flags) went to the wild west of Sydney, Leigh Matthews favoured the media game.
The Suns are not the finished product but who wouldn’t want to coach this array of talent?
In the last five drafts alone the Suns have secured Bailey Humphrey (pick 6), Mac Andrew (pick 5), Elijah Hollands (pick 7), Matt Rowell (pick 1), Noah Anderson (pick 2), Sam Flanders (pick 11), Jack Lukosius (pick 2), Ben King (pick 6).
They will bring in a trio of Academy stars who are all considered possible top 10 picks – No. 1 contender Jed Walter, top 5 pick Ethan Read and small-statured but brilliant midfielder Jake Rogers.
And Hardwick is able to inherit the same elite talent that saw him able to coalesce Richmond’s list into something brilliant with its top-end talent in Alex Rance, Trent Cotchin, Shane Edwards, Jack Riewoldt and Dustin Martin.
There have been enough curve balls in the Gold Coast-Dew journey in these past few years but if push comes to shove it is hard to see how the Suns could ignore Hardwick given he seems so open to a move north.

Brandon Ellis and Chol would be loving this.
I think it happens. Unfortunately it will leave a bad taste in the mouth but can't have our cake and eat it too. He is bound to be coaching again soon. If he gets appointed before the season out I'll say that's too soon but is what it is.

“THE MOST PREDICTABLE STORYLINE”: WHY HARDWICK TO THE SUNS ADDS UP
Andrew Slevison
SEN
11 July 2023
Whateley added: “It would be the least surprising development in football if Damien Hardwick was the coach of the Suns in October.”
Morris continued: “He’s got so many connections at that club as well from Richmond.
“Craig Cameron was at Richmond, he’s now the list manager at the Suns, Wayne Campbell is there, he’s got a connection with Mark Evans as well.
“There’s players like Brandon Ellis who was very close to Damien Hardwick at Richmond.
“Without wanting to say that it’s done, because I’ve got no idea whether it’s done or not, I’d be surprised if he’d agreed verbally or officially.
“It just seems like the most predictable storyline in football that Damien Hardwick will take over at the Gold Coast Suns for 2024 and beyond.”
Whateley pointed out that Hardwick would have had no interest in the Suns if Dew was still at the helm.
“The only way for that to happen was for the job to be vacant by the time he returned from Europe, because there’s no way that Damien Hardwick would have undermined Stuart Dew while he was actively in the job,” he added.
Morris replied, suggesting talks with Hardwick’s camp would have already been underway as Gold Coast’s Dew decision became clearer.
“Exactly right,” he said further.
“Gold Coast needed to make the call, maybe with a nod and a wink from Damien Hardwick’s manager. That’s the sort of thing that happens rather than Hardwick himself (holding talks).
“So the Suns saying they haven’t spoken to Hardwick is accurate, but it doesn’t mean the Suns haven’t got a nod and a wink from his manager Paul Connors or someone else close to Hardwick, which allows them to make the call on Stuart Dew knowing that Hardwick would be keen for that role.
“I’d be surprised that hasn’t happened here.”

Yeah they were bother here for a little while when Dimma coached.
Graig Cameron is the worst List Manager in the history of football. Wasn't surprised we improved after he left. Helmut

I hope to god it’s just gcs imploding and they fired dew to lure Hardwick (think Essendon and Rutten with trying to get clarkson) and it doesn’t eventuate
Purely speculative but there’s love between Dew and Hardwick right? Like I’m assuming he won’t take it out of respect?

The whole thing could well be premeditated. Although I’m not overly concerned either way. I think it was time for us to part ways with Dimma regardless.

I agree with this part, unless maybe the Melbourne fishbowl had something to do with it and the relatively low attention he'll get in GC is a factor.
Otherwise I believe he was trying to stay competitive, traded our picks for ready made players to address our biggest deficiency in 2022, and honestly burn out creeps up fast and quietly I know from my own experience as a worker and manager.

Gold Coast expected to offer Damien Hardwick five-year deal
Gold Coast are a step closer to confirming Damien Hardwick as their next coach, with club chief executive Mark Evans planning to jump on a plane to talk to Hardwick on his European vacation.
A senior club source, who was not authorised to speak publicly on the issue, has confirmed to The Scoop that the club reached out to Hardwick via phone last week to enquire if the three-time premiership coach at Richmond was interested in continuing his senior coaching career at the Suns.
Following that conversation, the club devised a clandestine plan to send a senior representative to Europe to meet Hardwick face to face.
A senior industry source, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, said Hardwick was expected to be offered a five-year contract.

CORNES REACTS AS REPORT SUGGESTS SUNS ARE SET TO OFFER HARDWICK FIVE-YEAR DEAL
While Cornes understands how good of a coach Hardwick is, he questioned whether he was the right coach for the Suns after he cited burnout as a reason to leave Richmond after nine rounds this season
“I'm just not going to quite get my head around this just yet,” Cornes said on SEN Sportsday.
“So, Hardwick leaves nine games into the season. He’s burnt out.
“He gets a payout from a club, presumably for the rest of the year.
“He goes away, he comes back, he attends some footy and does some stuff and he goes away again.
“Stuart Dew, his good mate, his premiership teammate gets the sack whilst he is away.
“I'm just sceptical that someone who is burnt out after Round 9, is ready to go again a couple of weeks later, according to him on the Dyl & Friends Podcast and now he’s ready to take over.
“Is he the right man for Gold Coast? I know what his resume says. I know what a great coach and football person he has been.
“But coaching is a job where you need energy. You need to be all in. You don't want to come back in January. You don't want to be having time off. You don't want to be burnt out.
“This club needs to play finals, it needs to play finals next year.”
Cornes also added that if he were a Richmond fan, he’d be annoyed at Hardwick if he signed on at another club for 2024 after listing his reasons to depart the Tigers.
“As I've said, a couple of times this year, if I was a Richmond fan, I'd be absolutely filthy,” Cornes said.
“He's traded all their (Richmond’s) draft picks.
“He's bolstered the midfield, he was contracted until the end of 2024.
"He lasted nine games in 2023, citing burnout and now he's going to coach a rival a couple of weeks later.
“It's a bizarre story to me and I love Damien Harwick and I love what he's done.
“But I'm sceptical of the whole thing.”

Of course it was. The tired , need time out was always a lie and bull 💩. As I've said , we thank you for being there for 3 cups but we're as dusty has shown are happier without you.
Richmond and the players were too nice with their words , but even blind Freddy could see it was all scripted. Dimma as a man is t a great bloke , he is far from it

What I don’t like is that he sold our future of on the promise of having a crack at another premiership but when it clear we won’t get there he gives up and says he is burnt out
But now it’s a miracle he is rejuvenated and can coach a developing side , but not our developing side
I will always be grateful but it might have been better if he just said I have a better offer from the AFL

Yep pretty clear as soon as he worked out we were off the pace and not going to compete this year he looked around. Got a nod and a wink from GC and then pulled the pin citing burnout. He has pulled the wool over the clubs eyes just as he did his ex missus.
If he took a payout knowing he had the GC gig then Benny should be asking him to repay it

DAMIEN HARDWICK WON RICHMOND EVERYTHING, AND OWES THE CLUB NOTHING
By Andrew Slevison
SEN
3 August 2023
So, Damien Hardwick is going to coach Gold Coast, is he?
Good on him.
The reports indicate that a five-year deal could be on the cards.
There have been suggestions in the media that Richmond supporters should be annoyed by the situation after he up and left the club midway through the 2023 season.
At the time there would have been many different feelings around ‘Dimma’ and his decision.
Read below:
WHY THE FIRE OF HARDWICK’S LEGACY BURNS BRIGHTER THAN THE DISAPPOINTMENT OF HIS DECISION (https://www.sen.com.au/news/2023/05/23/why-the-fire-of-hardwicks-legacy-burns-brighter-than-the-disappointment-of/)
But after almost four hapless decades in the wilderness, Hardwick led the Tigers back to the promised land.
Three premierships in four years and an era of success gets you a few brownie points. If it weren’t for Hardwick, Richmond may still be in the doldrums.
If he was burnt out at Punt Road, he was burnt out. That doesn’t mean he was, or is, burnt out with coaching. At some point in the next year or so, he was going to finish up at the club anyway. So why not rip the Band-Aid off now.
People leave jobs all the time. Sometimes people pull up stumps mid-year and move on to other industries. More often than not they go and work for a different employer in the same industry. So be it, that’s life. You’ve got to look out for yourself in this world, because most of the time nobody else will.
While this is different to a player leaving a club - as that never happens during the season unless it’s retirement - it’s not too far off.
Players switch clubs every year. Some probably because they were burnt out at one place and wanted a fresh start. Being burnt out doesn’t mean you want to retire.
The difference with this is, both the Tigers and the Suns had to plan for the future so both parties would have wanted to get the business done as early as possible. If Hardwick didn’t want to go around again with the Tigers, then make a change. That they did.
If the Suns didn’t see Stuart Dew as the man to take them forward, then make a change. That they did.
If the Suns believe a three-time premiership coach - who happens to be available and reportedly keen to coach again - can take them to the finals for the first time, then good on them for pursuing that man.
Richmond has won six of nine under Andrew McQualter, and while he may not necessarily win the job full-time, you could safely say that the Tigers wouldn’t have done any better under Hardwick.
The move appeared to reinvigorate the players and they have been playing with more freedom than they did in the first half of the season.
All Tigers fans can’t be spoken for in this instance, but you’d suggest the vast majority would be fairly comfortable with the situation.
Hardwick felt he couldn’t take the club forward any further, that maybe a change will be good for all involved. That happens from time to time.
The man won THREE premierships. He was burnt out after spending more than a quarter of his life at the one place. That’s understandable.
And if the wants to pursue a different lifestyle out of the Melbourne bubble and guide an underperforming club, then good luck to him.
The reported meeting with Suns chief Mark Evans in Cinque Terre is not quite Ibiza, as Dustin Martin suggested, but it is a small taste of what could be ahead on the 'Goldie'.
A more relaxed working life awaits.
Nothing can take away what he achieved at Richmond and nobody can begrudge him if he feels the need to revitalise and re-energise his life.
That’s not bizarre. That’s human nature.
Good luck on the Gold Coast if you happen to go there, Dimma. You owe Richmond nothing. You go with the blessing of every Tigers supporter we’ve quizzed on the situation.
The reality is, he will always be a Richmond person.
Just don’t go poaching any beloved Tigers…

It’s been about 2.5 months since he resigned and will be another month (atleast) until he would maybe take charge. So let’s say he will have been enjoying 3+ months of time off before he would have to start up work again. Not sure why people think that would validate the notion that him being burnt out was just a smokescreen. It’s the equivalent of taking long service leave in every other industry after working somewhere for 10+ years.
-
Yep, just argued against yourself , had long long service leave before the new job , :lol
-
How so? He claimed he was burnt out, he’s now had 3 months off - is it not possible to become refreshed after 3 months travelling the world and to then be ready? Besides being burnt isnt always as simple as someone has been working too long. Sometimes just need a change in environment as opposed to going to the same place everyday and working with the same people.

Sure. Or I’ll just continue to post on a forum for discussion…….

I think he was clear.
He referenced the last dance and we recruited for it. Yes, makes sense.
We were in front in all games last year into the last qtr bar 1 or 2. Adding midfield grunt in an increasingly midfield friendly game (thanks to rules) made sense.
We rolled the dice and it was clear it wasn’t going to work by round 9.
So he quit.
Yes, it all makes sense.
He earned the right to have a crack - he’s not Terry Fn Wallace.
Same circumstances and I would have backed him in again.
On paper it made sense.
He left when it became apparent it didn’t work and I’m applauding him for not stringing this out like Adam Simpson, Alastair Clarkson and Luke Beveridge are doing.
He won’t be at Gold Coast until November 1 so let’s not make stuff up. Coaches all start back then.
6 months is heaps of time to recharge the batteries.
Let it go and leave him be ya miserable sods.

Well said HRT :clapping

Excellent post HRT
Summed it perfectly

Never been a Dimma fan boy but jeez some people here are carrying on like he's Bomber Thompson... :shh
-
He's turned into a bit of an odd dude for the moment I think. Probably will fit right in on the Gold Coast.
-
He is pussy whipped, thats what i gather :shh
his mrs is probably running the show.
That said i couldnt give a stuff what he does now. My issue is the state of the list and he was involved in that.
-
I don’t care what Dimma does moving forward. I agree it’s not a good look for him and I think it’s pretty obvious discussions were had re Gold Coast before he pulled the pin. That’s life and the AFL industry these days.
But, can anyone explain why we’d need to pay him anything when he quit on us?
-
Crazy things happened on the Goldie. :lol
-
But, can anyone explain why we’d need to pay him anything when he quit on us?
We won't be paying him for the last year of his contract as you said he quit. We didn't sack him so there is no payout
Club and Dimma made it clear they had negotiated a deal when he quit around how he'd be paid for this season
Nothing to see here

Dimma is back in Melbourne and will be at the MCG tomorrow to farewell Cotch and Jack.

Great post HTR.
-
Honestly done care if Dimma and the GC already had a deal.
He delivered for us. That’s it.
It was time for a new voice. Let’s see what that brings.
-
Respected him when he coached us , but now can't stand the sight of him
-
Respected him when he coached us , but now can't stand the sight of him
You’re a bit extreme in your views Don Sicily.
It’s not all black and white.
-
I thought he said all the players lost respect for him and want nothing more to do with him??? I think he was just projecting his own feelings on Dimma.
-
If he’s rejuvenated why doesn’t he coach us next year?
*not what I actually want

Burnout my arse
6 yrs for the Gold Coast isn’t the actions of a man that is burnt out
-
As he sits there spruiking how excited he is for the next 6 years it puts a bit of a stink on how this came about.
-
Burnout my arse
6 yrs for the Gold Coast isn’t the actions of a man that is burnt out
Maybe it was the environment - I recently changed hospitals and feel very rejuvenated - was probably going to quit otherwise.
But yes it's hard to believe especially when he's committing to a huge 6 year contract lol
I think we're probably better off though anyway. Time had come
-
Apparently only starting thinking about coaching a week before they met in Milan. What a crock of horse........
-
I think the burnout comment is obviously in regards to coaching Richmond and not coaching in general which is fair enough. Will be interesting to see how the suns go
-
Apparently only starting thinking about coaching a week before they met in Milan. What a crock of horse........
Yeah
He’s FOS no doubt
Just be honest ffs
Owes the club nothing ..
All he had to say was that we were rooted and the message wasn’t getting through and he needed a change of scenery
Instead he’s spun nonsense the entire way (and done a nice job on one of his best mates in the process)
Loyalty is very important to Dimma, until he sees a shiny new toy
Mrs first
Richmond second
And who cares about the collateral damage like poor old Stewy Dew
Would love Dew at the club in some capacity BTW
-
We’ve been played by a bloke that had turned out to be a liar and a cheater.
Burnout - what a load of BS
The only people to be burnt were the players, club and supporters
Sod off u prick.
-
Have to laugh, some of the loudest who wanted him gone are now the loudest bagging him out that he has left
-
Blind Freddy can see that this current player group requires rejuvenation and a new voice .
I wouldn’t be surprised at all if we got a quick bounce- similar to the Giants , with the right appointment.
-
His lady friend is high maintenance :shh
-
Good luck to him..Richmond coaching job was a poisoned chalice when he took over and GC's is even more of a career killer...not that he'll care... :shh
-
Some need to chill around these parts.
Or go buy a voodoo doll. :lol
-
Not me - glad to see the back of him tbh - hope GC also invest in good assistants because he's only ever been as good as they are... :shh
-
AT can you confirm the main reason he went up there was because he missed coaching BEllis? :shh
-
Dimma clearly doesn’t like anything too old or slow. Jumps ship at first sign of aging.
Likes them young and vibrant with a tinge of carrot. :shh
I think he’ll be at Gold Coast next season. :rollin
I thinks I tipped this correctly. :clapping :rollin :clapping

I'm really disappointed how it's all transpired.
I'll always love Dimma for what he did for us. How can you not.
Do I respect the way he's gone about it, absolutely not.
Did he lie about thing, probably. Does it matter not really.
Do I wish him luck, absolutely not, in particular at the expense of us.
Will it overshadow or ruin out dynasty, absolutely not.
I can't see it working to be honest. No coach has two successful stints. You can count them on your hands. Malthouse and Matthews only ones. And they had success over generations. The game evolved and successful coaches keep continuing the ways of the past. Dimma chaos ball is done. The stand rule, 666, bigger goal square all was for that purpose to evolve the game away from it. It's why we've dropped away. Unless Dimma comes up with the next latest trend in AFL and makes GC players more elite at it than others, can't see it working. It's also probably last roll of dice for GC. If Dimma can't get them finals in 6 years they may as well fold em.

each to their own, i personally dont gaff. Good luck to him. We wont be competing with them the way we are going.
The only exception to this would be if he prized dusty over there and we got dudded somehow
Thats just me.

Burn out my butt.. Dimma was a great coach for us, but as a man he isn't so great. His actions over the past few years have proved he is a man that cannot be trusted.
He is a liar and full of 💩.
I hope karma gets him

....those who live in glass houses...........

Dimma is just a man nothing more nothing less. We all have our good and bad points
I’m soo grateful for the absolute delight he’s given me the past few years, watching his team go about it’s business in what I thought was a wonderful way , in the manic way they played and the way they honoured each other. All of society can take something from the “Richmond man”
Who by the way will live on and prosper judging by what is coming out from Gale, Balmy etc
-
Great full for the flags , but his bs burnout and conduct last couple seasons been not so good for me jumped ship no doubt about it.
-
Dimma is just a man nothing more nothing less. We all have our good and bad points

And he can never fail
No one but the pure at heart
May find the Golden Grail
Oh-oh, oh-oh

No issue with what he has done. I don't believe he ever said he was burnt out, he said he couldn't find a new way to 'fry the sausages' or whatever - ie he wasn't able to motivate the group any longer - and he was right, we were looking flat, disinterested and unmotivated.
The 'burnt out' narrative came from others as far as I recall and morphed into him being 'done'. I don't think he ever said that, in fact I got the distinct impression he would be coaching next year no matter what. He was definitely done at Richmond and made the right call, even if there was a fair degree of self interest in the decision.

Would argue that he did the right to thing by the club as well. Gave us plenty of time to get the process right.
-
Well, trading all our draft picks combined with poor drafting has left us in a difficult position. Not saying it was all him but he must have made a call on the last tilt at glory.
When it became obvious it wasn’t working CYL.
Mind you if Lynch and Gibcus had been fit it may have been a different scenario

Let's put it in simple terms he jumped ship once he seen the writing on the wall where the side was heading no doubt about it and that doesn'sit well with me. The club was blindsided with this decision and that tells you. The part about not able to cook the sausages was all bs he and the club went all out to get Taranto and Hooper for this last flag opportunity and once it turned sour he jumped ship.
-
Fronting the media on Monday, Hardwick said his decision to leave Richmond remained the right one.
“I think there‘s narratives that gets thrown around. The fact of the matter is I’d been in that organisation for 13 years and given everything to that group of players. The fact of the matter is they needed a new voice,” he said.
“I still love coaching and it will always be in my blood, I’m a career coach.
“I’ve got a great bunch of players now that I’m very much looking forward to going through. Brandon (former Tigers player Brandon Ellis) will have to listen to a couple of old stories that he’ll have to sit there and bear and grin and laugh, but I’ve got a great new bunch of toys that I’m really looking forward to working with and I couldn’t be more excited.”

Although I didn't think he'd be coaching next year . Then Dew got sacked and here we are. Really feel for Stewie Dew.

Wrong order WP
Hardwick was sorted , then Dew sacked
NO WAY was Dew sacked before they had something in place with Hardwick

Fair call Damo.
Personally, I didn't think he'd be coaching next year. Perhaps foolishly I thought the Suns would make finals this year. So based on that I didn't think Dew would get sacked
-
One aspect not discussed is lets not forget Dimma had Gale , Balme and Peggy in his corner the rock foundation won't have that at the sun's big disadvantage for him he struggled without them.
Come on WP you can't be that naive this was done long ago everything in place. There was talk of him meeting Port and the Sun's at rd 5.

Changing of environment can absolutely refresh someone. Not to mention he will likely start around November which will mean he would have been off galavanting around the world for 5+ months. How long does everyone think you need to refresh? I’d be happy with 5 weeks off work let alone 5 months.

When I was made redundant (happily I might add) I took 10 months off before I thought about going back to work

It was clear that his time with us was coming to an end.

i'm sure others have met him here, he is truly a gentleman.
I personally met him for the first time recently when out with my kids.
I did say to him dont you leave us to and he said where am i going to, im staying for good. :thumbsup
Yep a gentleman and always willing to have a chat about anything
Now without wanting to sound like a smart behind, you should have asked him about the soft cap and how we work it and about how we structure our assistant coaches. You might then get a better understanding as to why we don't pay overs. They way je explains it is forst rate. :shh

Why don’t you do your best at paraphrasing

Never met the legend , can only try to understand him from his book. With him and Benny running the show I have no doubt our coaching decision and anything else for that matter is in the correct hands.
It’s a shame these two aren’t running the country they’d get my vote hands down

So just so I'm clear if Balmey gave you the similar responses that I posted would his be "idiotic"?

From Barrett's 'Sliding Doors' column:
IF ...
Tim Taranto and Jacob Hopper happened to roll their eyes upon hearing Dimma Hardwick saying: "I likened it to waking up on Christmas Day and walking out to a set of brand new toys" upon this week publicly accepting the Suns' six-year coaching contract
THEN ...
that would've been understandable and justified. Taranto and Hopper were Dimma's "new toys" this time last year, when he convinced them to leave GWS and head to the Tigers.

Hope Mabs enjoys his last game for the Suns today.

The Suns must have been celebrating all week to lose to Norf.

And Dimmo reckons their list is 80% there.
And they can't beat what was the 18th placed team
Hmmmmm.

And they beat us so does that make us the worst team in the Comp. Their future is bright imo but I’m not sure if you’ll ever get the buy in from the players up there.
-
Tend to agree Sim.
They've been paying big $$ to their young players before they've really earned it simply to hold onto to them
Which makes you question how committed they are in chasing the ultimately prize

Probably just making sure they don't slip down the draft a spot

Mick Malthouse on Damien Hardwick
Coaching legend MICK MALTHOUSE says no one should be surprised by Damien Hardwick’s move to Gold Coast, but Richmond fans are entitled to feel angry.
Mick Malthouse
HeraldSun
August 26, 2023
It’s not surprising that Damian Hardwick has ended up at Gold Coast.
The initial surprise was that he chose to resign at a critical moment in Richmond’s season.
However, it now appears that he had concluded that the Tigers would struggle this year, and perhaps for the next two or three years until they could re-emerge.
And the thought of mounting losses and rebuilding clearly didn’t appeal to him, having already done it at Tigerland.
His early days at Richmond were ones of struggle, where his methods were questioned and there were calls for his demise.
He’s lived through that pain and that innuendo and maybe the mind didn’t want to go there again.
He has the luxury of three premierships under his belt, so he was in high demand.
No one really thought it was going to be anyone other than Hardwick to coach the Suns once Stuart Dew was shown the door.
Hardwick has stated that 80 per cent of the Suns’ current players will play in the club’s first premiership. It’s a big statement but probably true. So, for Hardwick, it seems like he has made the right move.

80 percent of next Premiership lost to a team trying to rank and head lost 20 games in a row. Good luck.
King is 23. Don't make finals by year 2 and he will look to come home. End of GC.

'You owe the Tigers': Caroline Wilson grills 'disrespectful' Damien Hardwick after inconsiderate Richmond comments
Anna Pavlou
Nine
5 September 2023
Caroline Wilson has grilled new Gold Coast Suns coach Damien Hardwick's "disrespectful" behaviour towards Richmond after his "generous" exit from the club back in May.
Hardwick signed a monster five-year deal with the Suns despite stepping down as Tigers' coach, citing a "burnout" mid-season.
"Some of Hardwick's recent behaviour has not sat well with Richmond people," Wilson said on Nine's Footy Classified on Monday night.
"Disrespectful, Damien. And you didn't even rule out having a crack at Dusty (Dustin Martin) either.
"Surely you owe the Tigers a bit more than that after they released you pretty generously, one and a half years early from a lucrative contract."
Hardwick spoke openly at the Suns' press conference announcing him as their new coach at the end of August, likening his new playing list as a "set of brand new toys".
"I'm waking up on Christmas Day to a set of brand new toys," Hardwick said in the press conference.
"I've got a great new bunch of toys that I'm really looking forward to working with."
But the comments didn't sit well with Wilson, who took them as a stab at the playing group he left behind at Richmond.
"I think it was this comment that was a bit too much for some Tigers," Wilson said.
"A three time premiership coach earns you a lot of meal tickets ... but I think when Richmond people saw the comment about 'Christmas Day' and 'all the toys' ... I think that was a little bit too much.
"I think Richmond should remain a no-go-zone."
Despite Wilson grilling Hardwick's inconsiderate behaviour, Essendon great Matthew Lloyd applauded the new Gold Coast coach's forward approach in attempt to sell the club and its dream.
Footy Classified is now available as a podcast! Subscribe/follow via Apple, Spotify or Google Podcasts
"I think when you've got 30 or 40 players standing behind, in a way it's selling yourself to them and telling them ... that they can be the next premiership players," Lloyd said on Monday night.
"Richmond people should just move on. It's a good thing that he's moved on, so they can move on as well."

“He’s one of ours”: Tigers advisor Neil Balme responds to ‘made up’ reports of Richmond unrest with Hardwick
“The fact that she’s relying on ‘Robbo’ for information means that I reckon she’s making it up.”
Jack Jovanovski
zerohanger.com
September 6, 2023
Richmond senior club advisor Neil Balme has responded to reports of the club's unrest with Damien Hardwick departing Punt Road for the Gold Coast.
The Tigers missed the finals this season as three-time premiership coach Hardwick departed his Punt Road post in the middle of the season, leaving assistant Andrew McQualter as the interim man at the wheel.
With the club's off-season having officially begun, Richmond is in the process of sourcing its new full-time senior coach, with McQualter, along with a host of others, throwing his hat in the ring.
Balme joined Daniel Harford on RSN Breakfast on Wednesday, addressing recent conjecture surrounding Richmond's coaching vacancy.
"That's the challenge, how do you cope with it (missing the finals)? You're not supposed to win them all, so you've got to accept that a bit, and it's sometimes a bit of a rebirth," began Balme on Wednesday morning.
"That relates then to the fact that we're making a decision on coaching as well, which in its own way is probably a great opportunity for us to say 'Okay, what do we really need? Where are we with this?' and start again.
"Whether it's (Andrew) McQualter or someone else, that will be worked out over this month, but we're in a reasonable position from that point of view; we can at least make a decision on that, not that we'd probably love to sell out 'Dimma', but that's what has happened, and he's been brave enough to tell us how he felt, which is not always the way in footy."
During the week, veteran journalist Caroline Wilson reported on Footy Classified that some figures at Punt Road haven't been particularly pleased with Hardwick's recent dealings.
"Now the dust has settled on that extraordinary timeline between quitting Tigerland — burnt out at the end of May — to turning up as a rejuvenated and regenerated man in Gold Coast red at the end of August, some of Hardwick's recent behaviour has not sat well with Richmond people," Wilson detailed on Monday evening.
Balme responded to that report before delivering a dig to fellow travelled journalist Mark Robinson, who regularly appears on Fox Footy's AFL 360.
"I heard [her report] just before because I don't rely on those shows for my football information," laughed Balme.
"I do know 'Caro' very well and she's a terrific person and we're good friends, but I feel sorry for the media people at times because they've got to come up with a story, and that's kind of what that is.
"I mean, what does Richmond really think? We think Damien's one of us, he's been wonderful. Would we prefer that he was still coaching us? Probably, but you know what we're most proud of? Is that he was able to come to us and say 'I reckon I've puffed out, I reckon I'm done, I've been here for a long time and I think I'm not getting the point across and I'm not sure that I've got the energy to do it, and I'm going to tell you that'.
"The fact that he's finished up at Gold Coast, well he's one of ours, and we're not necessarily barracking for him when we play them, but footy's better off with people like Damien Hardwick in it, so we're happy he's there.
"It's a bit like who's the coach at Collingwood? He's (Craig McRae) one of ours. Who's the coach at GWS? He's (Adam Kingsley) one of ours. They've come through our program and we're really proud of that, and we love to see that.
"Now, I kind of get what 'Caro's saying, but the fact that she's relying on 'Robbo' (Mark Robinson) for information means that I reckon she's making it up. Have you ever heard her say "'Robbo' said" before? I don't reckon she has that often."
Balme also voiced his opinion on the concept of succession planning with coaches, noting its rare success and maintaining his confidence in Richmond's handling of its vacancy.
"To say that we didn't have a succession plan, can you have a succession plan while someone's your senior coach? I don't reckon you can," Balme continued.
"What's he going to think? It's rare that it happens and, really, what would you do is what we're doing now. The coach, finally, has had enough and we start again and see what we can find, and in a lot of ways it's a really positive thing for Richmond that we've got an opportunity to reset ourselves.
"We need to find the coach that we need ... You get to start again. So, it's not so negative as it's Damien's been wonderful for us and we love him ... But we've also got to listen to what the people say, and what he said is he's done, and we've still got to make a decision, but I think it helps us rather than hurts us."
The Tigers are expected to come to a conclusive head-coaching decision after this year's finals series winds to a close.

What a ridiculous argument we have here
-
Broad: "I take Caro's comments with a grain of salt to be honest. At Richmond, internally, we don't see it like that at all. Dimma was burnt out. He needed to get out of Melbourne and away from Richmond. Internally, the way we see it is he was amazing for us, gave us three flags and we're so grateful. But, you could see it in Dimma as he said that he couldn't look a player in the eye and give his full commitment. Change is as good as a holiday. Jack and Cotch left as well as Dimma which is sad but it wipes the slate clean so we can move forward. I'm not disappointed with Dimma leaving and Dimma's comments. I know he loves us and this footy club, but everyone needs a change at some point. People change jobs in the real world. It's all good internally."

* No conservation when Dimma departed warning him if he leaves then don't raid our club.
* Knew he would coach again but there was no floor or ceiling on when. Didn't think it would be so soon.
* Only considered returning to coaching when Gold Coast approached him.
* His manager, Paul Connors told Dimma, 3 or 4 days before, that Evans and East from the Suns wanted to come to Italy to talk. Dimma initially said tell them no, but they persisted in coming to present what they had to say. Dimma started googling about their players and the talent that was there which pricked his interest. On meeting Evans and East, they all connected, and he agreed to coach the Suns.

Hardwick on why he left Tigers, feeling reinvigorated and the Sun with potential to be ‘special’
After more than a decade as Richmond coach, Damien Hardwick has begun a new chapter at Gold Coast. He talks to Michael Gleeson about being reinvigorated by his new club, the young Sun with a licence to do a “Dusty” and why he doesn’t regret being open about his family life to build connections.
Michael Gleeson
The Age
February 26, 2024
In his last years at Richmond, Damien Hardwick now recognises he was simultaneously over-coaching and barely coaching at all.
The two seemingly contradictory observations help explain the fugue the former Tigers coach got into when he left midway through last season. The team had come to know his game so well he managed people but barely instructed them how to play. He can see now that as he strived to find that extra edge, he added more layers to their game when fewer would have been better. He overloaded them.
His first senior AFL game as coach of the Suns will be against Richmond, a team that knows the game he is trying to instil in the Suns better than the Suns players do.
Ahead of that clash, this masthead spent two days embedded with the Suns in team and recruiting meetings, at training, and interviewing staff and the triple-premiership coach.
The clear impression now is of a club being moulded in Hardwick’s image. The Suns are looking like Richmond II. Which is a good thing.
In a candid assessment of the last year and the job ahead, Hardwick:
* Dismisses the idea that his new job at the Suns was a done deal when he left Richmond, saying “that’s society. I think we always look at the conspiracy theory, whether it’s COVID, JFK (the US president’s assassination) or whether it’s landing on the moon, there’s always going to be people that lend itself to that side.”
* Has been re-invigorated on the Gold Coast by being “back on the tools” actually coaching a game plan.
The Tigers
After his long stint at Richmond, Hardwick is able to see what happened towards the end of his time as senior coach.
“I think when you’ve been in an organisation for like 13 or 14 years, you become more of a man manager. So you’re allowing other people to step up. What is happening now is I’m more on the tools,” Hardwick said.
“Where you play a style of game over a number of years the majority of your coaching staff and your playing group have got a really good understanding about role execution and system. Right now, it’s more hands on.
“You’ve coached for a long time and you start trying to add layers and layers and layers, and yes, you end up probably making the game harder than what it has to actually be sometimes.
“The game is incredibly complex so let’s simplify that. Let’s not over-coach during the week. And I think, if I’m being completely honest with myself, that’s probably the way I tended to go towards the back stages [of my time at Richmond]. I tried to over coach a little bit, which I think happens from time to time because if things aren’t going too well you feel like you’ve got to step in.
“I think I’ve become a little bit more relaxed and I’ve got a greater understanding about the players. Give them a framework, give them a system and then just let them play the game.”
Mrs Hardwick
Hardwick was the coach who most embraced the trend of being open and vulnerable to build connections with and between his players. An emotional man, he is a “giver” who would often personalise stories and invoke his wife Danielle – “Mrs Hardwick”. It was jarring then for some – former captain Trent Cotchin spoke of this in his recently published book – when Hardwick subsequently split with Danielle and began a new relationship with a then Richmond employee.
With time and space for reflection, Hardwick says he does not regret the narrative he created from personal stories and references and will not change his style.
“No, I don’t [regret the family references] because, Danielle and my kids have been an enormous part of my life for 25-30 years. And Danielle will always be a part of my life. She’s a mother to my three wonderful kids, and we’ve still got a reasonably solid relationship, but things change and that’s the reality.
“Could things be done a bit better along the way and not played out in public? Yeah probably, but you can’t go back, you can only forge your way forward. The way I coach and the way I approach things I’ll always be open, I’ll always be honest, and I might be too much of a sharer but I’d rather be that than the opposite way.
“I want the players to know that I’m emotional and that I’m vulnerable at stages and I am struggling because the fact of the matter is, we all do it.
“One thing I’ve learnt, and I’ve learnt a lot of great lessons from a lot of great people, Trent being one of those and Dustin and these type of people, is that you’ve got to have conversations where you do feel uncomfortable, and you do share things that are going to put you a little bit not at ease, but that’s helped people and clubs and organisations.”
