HRS cannot play as sub again, he has had no impact about 3 games in a row. MRJ is a good sub type. Thought he was great in first half and faded.

HRS stank

MRJ I thought should have done more and that the conditions should have suited him but happy to play him while Mansell is out suspended and reassess later.

We really need a different sub option...Cumberland? He had a big impact when subbed on last time.

I think Ryan being out will mean the return of soldo, which I really don’t like but oh well

Play Coulthard in front of MJ. Least he's a goal kicker.

Hope not. Nank has been rucking 90% of the time anyway. Just throw Miller in when Nank needs a break.

INS: Pickett, Hopper, Banks

OUTS: Ryan (inj), Cotch (managed - deserves an extra week off), Young (although he was better last night), HRS (sub - enough already)

MRJ was putrid again.  Not many want to say it, though I will.

I'd like coultard from the VFL tried. He looks good so far, and has scored in both games. We may have find someone here.

Perhaps another week in the Vfl, unless they are playing next week which I would then consider for the gabba.

I'm with you.  He can tackle but struggles to get on the scoreboard.  Back to vfl level.  Play Coulthard

Richmond to recall Marlion Pickett after the bye as midfield squeeze looms

Jon Ralph
HeraldSun
June 20, 2023

Marlion Pickett has been assured he will slot back into the Richmond side to take on Brisbane on Thursday week as the break gives him time to overcome a nagging hip pointer injury.

Richmond’s players will continue their charge towards finals against Brisbane next week but have the week off with the bye to gather themselves before a final nine-week charge.

Richmond has won five of the past seven games, with their only losses a one-point defeat at Dreamtime at the ‘G and a plucky 10-point loss to Port Adelaide when they kicked 9.13.

The Tigers would need to win at least six of those nine games and will need to do so without Tom Lynch, whose post-bye return date has again eased back.

Richmond is determined not to rush his return and put him in a position to reinjure his broken foot so his return date is still uncertain.

The Tigers got a positive update that his broken foot was healing from a specialist last week but he is yet to make any ground towards being reintegrated back into the football program.

Fitness boss Luke Meehan said last week Jacob Hopper (calf) would be ready after the bye, so the club has to decide whether to risk him against the Lions.

Pickett missed the victory over St Kilda after he was bailed on burglary charges after a decision between club and player that he would be better served sidestepping the contest.

He had been battling a minor hip issue that will have fully resolved itself by that Brisbane clash.

The 31-year-old will slot straight back into the Richmond side given strong form before his arrest.

He needs only two more games to hit a trigger clause under his contract to secure a new deal for 2024.

Under the terms of his bail Pickett must attend the Reservoir police station every Tuesday before an August committal mention via video-link for his charges.

If the Tigers also select Hopper there will be a selection squeeze given there were no fresh injuries in Trent Cotchin’s 300th game.

Maurice Rioli (six possessions) would be a chance to fall out of the side, while Hugo Ralphsmith started as the sub and had three possessions when brought into the game.

There is no VFL game this weekend so all Tigers listed players will have a break up until the weekend, when they will begin ramping up for that Brisbane contest at the Gabba.

Cotchin was squeezed out of the midfield by the Tigers because of Hopper and Tim Taranto’s recruitment and managed amid quiet form.

So coach Andrew McQualter’s challenge will be to bring Hopper back into that side without completely sidelining Cotchin, who has been excellent playing increased centre square minutes in the past three weeks.

Ryan is injured so our forward talls are stretched again.

I know it's a bone break but my word it's frustrating that Lynch is still a while away. 10 weeks almost to the day the Lions game will be since the Dogs game when he broke his foot. I scratch my head and question how Danger can have a broken rib and nearly play the following week. Stewart can strain his medial ligament and play in 2 weeks yet Lynch breaks his foot and is out what looks to be about 16 weeks.

I'm no doctor so my opinion is nothing but my god it's frustrating.

Cotchin imo has been good whenever we have played him on ball.
Just play him onball from the bench. There is no need to create a role for him. Plenty of mids he can rotate with. Might mean they all spend 5% less time there.

It won't happen but if Ryan is injured just throw a tall in to the team to play fwd.

While my opinion on Miller playing KPD has not really changed next week id like to see them play wMiller as a second ruck third
tall forward, and  bring in Bauer/Nyuon  as the other  tall to play alongside him and Jack as a permanent fwd.

Surely our talls are not that poor that we cannot play em at all. Still maintain the obligation has been there ever since Lynch got hurt to get games into them.

Richmond midfielder Jacob Hopper is on track to return next Thursday night against Brisbane.

Providing he gets through the Tigers’ main training session on Monday, the 26-year-old, who suffered his soleus injury in Round 9 against Geelong, will be back in the line-up.

Exciting young Tigers Noah Cumberland (soleus) and Samson Ryan (ankle) are also a test to face to the Lions following the bye.

Pickett also expected to return.

Jack and Prestia among those on light duties.

Samson still dealing with his ankle concerns.

Dion Prestia has suffered yet another soft-tissue injury, suffering a short-term calf complaint, and has been ruled out of this Thursday's match against Brisbane.

Richmond will be boosted by the return of Jacob Hopper from his own calf issue, the recruit available as a straight swap for Prestia after six weeks on the sidelines.

Prestia, 30, has traditionally been more seriously sidelined by hamstring injuries over his AFL career, but has also suffered a number of calf strains.

The loss of Prestia means it is more likely Trent Cotchin will continue in his midfield role, given there is now a rotation available for the returning Hopper.

The Tigers also confirmed Noah Cumberland (calf) and Samson Ryan (ankle) are available for selection to face the Lions.

Team Tips:

Dion Prestia will come out of the side due to a calf strain, but will be replaced by Jacob Hopper, who is returning from a soleus issue. Samson Ryan and Noah Cumberland are both available for selection as well, as the Tigers begin to get a bit more availability in their favour. Tom Brown was good in Richmond’s VFL side in round 13, but will struggle to get a look in given the Tigers’ impressive form in recent weeks at AFL level.

In the Mix: Round 16

The Tigers have somewhat of a selection crunch on their hands for one of the first times this season after their bye.

Jacob Hopper and Dion Prestia should complete a straight swap, the latter ruled out with a calf injury after the former has overcome his own.

Marlion Pickett is available for selection after a club-imposed match off following his arrest in Perth, while Noah Cumberland is also ready to go.

Samson Ryan should hold his place, the bye round coming at a perfect time for his minor ankle injury.

Richmond's VFL team also had a bye last weekend, with Ivan Soldo returning from his foot injury through the twos the round prior.

Maurice Rioli jnr may be the one to make way for a returning Pickett, with Cumberland unlikely to crack the forward mix, given the growing structural importance of Ben Miller.
