Straight up having gone to the tiges v eagles game im tipping the Hawks.
The simple fact is we no longer dominate sides and even games against cellar dwellars are troublesome.
Fmd our two biggest wins are against wce twice and while most other good sides were thumping them we can only win by 46 and 38 points.

We are yet to play NM and i shudder to think of the reaction if we manage to lose to them.

Ok a different perspective. We lose 5 in a row and look horrible but aint timing everything we get the most depleted side in the comp if not history injury wise in the eagles and can only win by 46 points.

We then get Geelong at home who are also reeling from injury and manage a win. Yep timing aint it grand.

Then a dream time loss followed by what i would call a very good effort against port at home. so far we aint beating too many teams that arent injured or above us.

We then beat GWS in a game that could have gone either way. Then Fremantle in Perth which was not great given where the dockers are now.

Then a win against StKilda as they hit a bad patch. Then finally we hit a top 4 team with out injury and we get belted.
Coming off this back to timing. We then get Sydney at home a team who had also been struggling with injuries and it was on the line with less than two minutes remaining.
Then lucky us we get the eagles again and yep we struggle and cannot get a much needed big percentage boost.

Now before everyone carries on like pork chops as usual, im playing devils advocate here and just giving the other perspective.
Yes our 5 game losing streak coincided with injuries but fmd our fwd line has become a laughing stock with just the loss of one player.
That has to tell supporters that all is not well surely.

I think your assessment of our wins is poor.

Beating Geelong is never easy.
GWS are a good team under Kingsley. That's was a tough win on the road against a competitive side.
Freo not as tough but on the road second game in a row too.
Saints are top 6 and although they choke they're definitely not worse than us IMO.
Swans yeah they're not great either but hardly cellar dwellers too, more of a 10-14 side I think.

The port loss was close and the only hiding we've got was from Brisbane at the Gabba, fit and healthy and always wanting to prove a point to us.

Have a look at the Hawks/North game, it was no great game of football either.  North were insipid.

WC were only missing Yeo, Liam Ryan and a 33 year-old Nic Nat. Hardly depleted. out of form. for sure but hardly a second string

Collingwood only beat the eagles by 60 . Game was tight at 3 quarter time .  It’s a folly to assess wins by margin .

Whilst finals are well and truly out of the question for Hawthorn, Richmond coach Andrew McQualter didn't doubt how competitive his upcoming opponents can be.

"We know that their best footy can be really, really dangerous. They can be fast and attack, they defend really well. So that's what we're preparing for," McQualter told reporters at Punt Road on Thursday.

"We think we've got lots of room to grow, so we're enjoying the challenge at the moment. We're still conceding too many entries against us."

https://www.zerohanger.com/richmond-aware-of-hawthorn-threat-as-mitchell-eyes-perfect-opportunity-to-impact-finals-race-140114/

Hawthorn coach Sam Mitchell is eager for his team to "take a chunk" out of its higher-placed rivals during the final six rounds, and Richmond is first on the hit list.

"Richmond is a perfect opportunity for us to see if we can start to beat some teams who are in front of us on the ladder."

Richmond v Hawthorn Preview

Andrew Slevison
SEN
20 July 2023

Despite winning five of seven under caretaker coach Andrew McQualter, Richmond has entered ‘must-win’ territory this season.

The Tigers, who sit 11th on the ladder and two points outside the eight, were made to work hard for their 38-point victory over West Coast in Perth last weekend.

They take on Hawthorn who occupies 16th position on the back of an inaccurate 48-point win over North Melbourne having dropped their previous three matches.

Richmond has seen an uptick in form from the likes of Dustin Martin, Shai Bolton and Dion Prestia over the last month with the likes of Tim Taranto, Dan Rioli, Nick Vlastuin and Liam Baker keeping on as their most consistent performers.

Sam Mitchell’s Hawks have been served well by their improving midfield unit consisting of Jai Newcombe, James Worpel, Will Day and Conor Nash, while Karl Amon has also found form of late. They will get Rising Star nominee Seamus Mitchell back for this.

Noah Balta appears a good matchup for the dangerous Mitch Lewis down one end, while Luke Breust is a constant source of goals for the Hawks and will draw a decent defender in the form of Dylan Grimes or Nathan Broad.

At the other end, the Tigers have not been reliant on a particular forward by frequently sharing the load and having midfielders get in on the goal kicking act.

With more on the line, their stars in good form and a better head to head record of late (winning three of the last four including a draw), the Tigers have enough in their favour to see off the Hawks in Saturday’s first game.

But it won’t be easy.

Tip: Richmond by 14 points.

THE CERTAINTIES FOR ROUND 19

Andrew Slevison
SEN
22 July 2023

Richmond versus Hawthorn

Martin to have 20+ disposals, kick 1+ goal

Dustin Martin has a nice record against Hawthorn over the years.

Over 14 career games against the Hawks, he has averaged 27 disposals and kicked 13.10.

In his last four outings, ‘Dusty’ has been showing signs of his very best. He has averaged 29 touches and kicked 3.5 in that time.

We’re backing the 32-year-old to gather at least 20 disposals and kick at least one goal this weekend.

Breust to kick 2+ goals

Luke Breust always seems to bob up against Richmond.

He has kicked 11.5 in his last five outings against the Tigers and has a career tally of 30.9 in 14 games.

The 32-year-old has kicked 31 goals this year at an average of more than two per game, leading the way for the Hawks.

Breust has booted two or more in nine of 15 games this year and looks primed to return at least a pair at the MCG on Saturday afternoon.

Yup deserves more blame than Miller imo for even calling for that pass. He was 5m from goal just leave him to take the set shot.

That plus the broad poor kick -> Rioli one handed mark attempt -> broad not taking the easy handball and being caught htb, completely changed momentum.

Miller
Ross
Jack G
Jack R
Broad is getting flogged. Weak as pee since he signed his contract
Bolton - when was the last time he kicked a set shot? Not worth $5 let alone 800k
Taranto and Hopper - expensive duds

Half-time

Richmond    3.2    6.6-42
Hawthorn    4.2   10.3-63

Goals: Martin, Hopper, Graham, Taranto, Miller, Baker.

We and especially our mids need a rocket at half-time. FFS, they are playing a stuff in Frost as 2nd ruck and they still win the centre clearance.

Look we played crap from 3 qtrs.  We carried on from last week. But gotta hand it to the boys. That last qtr was amazing and would have been better if jack could still play. Granted he deserved a couple or 3 free kicks , but he would have missed them all anyway. He has been pretty much useless
The bonus is we found a kid. Coulthard has it. He is a find .
Big cheer to dan RIOLI.  Tried his guts out all day and was rewarded with a match saving last qtr. Absolutely brilliant.
Timmy T, another game to shove up Cornes butt .
Mini , we must say deserves a big cheer. Taking Young off who kept Barass to donuts , 0 possessions, to bring in Coulthard showed brains and courage .

Got to ask where that fight and desperation was in the first 3 quarters but in the end we got over the line by the skin of our teeth to get the 4 points which is the most important thing. Season still alive.

Make baker captain

If it was for his last qtr I'd probably agree

But his first 3 and in particular his first half were average

I get what he is trying to do but when it starts costing you goals because the knock ons go straight to the opposition, results in turnovers and creates incredibly soft scoring opportunities then I'm doing this  :banghead and saying caotain? not for me

I actually thought Bakes looked like our most dangerous forward in the 1st half.

Problem was what he did with it.

He was channelling his inner Cotchin  ;)

Baker forward doesn't work.

At one stage our forward line was

Jack
Baker Cotchin Graham Prestia Pickett

Player in twilight and a heap of midfielders. Gotta ensure we have some forwards on the list next year because you cat play 5 midfielders in forwardline. Crazy

Don't think Cotch will want to watch the replay

Probably the worst game he's played in a decade

That pass from Miller was dumb. Cotch had a bloke running straight at him so had to kick high/close to the man.

The second miss was terrible.

Jack has a mare too fmd.

Simple fact is that we had too many slow or old blokes on the field today.

Cotchin
Riewoldt
McIntosh
Pickett
Grimes
Graham

At least one of them has to go next week.

Expected scores had us winning by 6 goals  :o.

Hawthorn's super-accuracy combined with our missed sitters made the game what it was.

We were also at only a 10% chance of winning twice in the last quarter. The last two minutes saw us go from 10% up to 100% winners.

#AFLTigersHawks Final xScores:
RICH 95 from expected 102.9 (+1 rushed)
HAW 95 from expected 67.1 (+0 rushed)

AFL Report Card: Round 19

Ben Cotton, Ben Waterworth, Catherine Healey
Foxsports
24 July 2023

RICHMOND

How did they do that? The Tigers on Saturday pulled off the most remarkable barnstorming finish to keep their season alive, fighting back from a 36-point deficit in the shadows of three-quarter time to break Hawthorn hearts in a spectacular case of highway robbery. After being largely outplayed in the opening three quarters, Richmond in the fourth term flicked the switch in devastating fashion and kicked the last six goals to overpower the Hawks with a one-point win. It was the Tigers’ equal-greatest comeback from three-quarter time after being down by 30 points at the final change. Their charge towards the top eight remains on course.

In the votes

Tim Taranto produced another match-winning performance that featured 23 disposals, 11 contested possessions, eight tackles and three goals, while Dustin Martin was also crucial in racking up 24 touches, seven marks and two goals. Jack Ross (27 disposals) and Jack Graham (21) were also influential. But leading the charge late were Liam Baker and Daniel Rioli, who had eight touches for the final term alone, while debutant Matt Coulthard had an enormous impact coming on as the sub, having seven disposals, two inside 50s and going at 100 per cent by foot.

Room for improvement

As good as their final-term blitz was, the Tigers were outplayed by Hawthorn for the first three quarters, with their backline struggling to fire. At three quarter-time, the Hawks had kicked 15 goals from 44 inside 50s, compared to Richmond’s nine from 39. Fox Footy’s David King said at one stage in the second term: “They’re a rabble down back at the moment the Tigers … I haven’t seen them look like this down back for a while.” Elsewhere, Trent Cotchin kicked 0.2 and went at 30 per cent by foot.

Coaching highlighted in the dying stages of Richmond v Hawthorn

Nathan Buckley
SEN
24 July 2023

“I saw a cracking game, Richmond v Hawthorn on the Saturday and I was taken by the last 10 minutes and the coaching within it.

“You've got (Andrew) McQualter who's trying to earn a senior role and you've got Sam Mitchell who's coaching for the future.

“They both had to consider different scenarios, less than a goal up, less than a goal down.

“It became a point of discussion in the post-match.

“So, Will Day went back with seven minutes to go, Richmond had kicked a couple and they were only two goals away from getting there.

“They were 13 points up I think Hawthorn, but all the momentum was with Richmond.

“There must have been some scenario training to say, ok, ‘Will Day goes back as a seventh (defender) when we want to slow the opposition down’.

“But Nick (Vlaustin) went as a seventh forward which asked the question (of Day).

“Then there was still four minutes to go, and Richmond are still two goals down and then (Karl) Amon off the wing, came back and played as an eighth defender.

“Will Day and (Jack) Scrimshaw were two v one against Jack Riewoldt who had a couple of real key contests.

“I thought the coaching was brilliant on both sides and it was a close game as a response.

“I thought both would come out of that with positives.”

AFL WINNERS AND LOSERS: THE RESULTS FROM ROUND 19 AND WHO IT SAYS MORE ABOUT

BY SEN
24 July 2023

Richmond (96) vs Hawthorn (95)

Buckley: “It speaks volumes about Andrew McQualter and his impact on this Richmond team.

“His captain Dylan Grimes said during the week that he had his vote, and I thought that Sam Mitchell and Hawthorn actually asked Richmond a real coaching challenge and the questions that were asked were answered really well.

“The coaches box responded and reacted really well and the scenarios piece that we discussed was there for all to see and it was a stirring win.

“A great game of footy. Both sets of fans would have gone home pretty impressed with the game and the occasion that they witnessed because it was a great win by the Tigers, but the Hawks weren't disappointed.”

I think Sicily’s 10 votes is further amplified by Jack spraying his shots. Had he nailed his very gettablr shots do they give 10 pts to someone whose direct opponent kicks 3+ goals?

And doesn't augur well for this week's game. May, Lever and Gawn will have a picnic if we bomb the ball long down the line and inside 50 with only Jack down there. We did that constantly for the first 3 quarters and Sicily gobbled it up. I think we'll see us take a few more risks with ball in hand this week. Might get ugly when it breaks down tho.

Not to mention the 3 or 4 direct shove in the backs he did when taking some of those intercept marks.
