Quarter time

Richmond   4.2-26
Box Hill      2.5-17

Goals: Cumberland 3, Bradtke.

Mostly good. Very open game by both sides. Not for a few fumbles at crucial moments it would've been even better.

Dow, Maurice and Cumberland our best so far. Helps to have a proper ruckman in our VFL team with Samson (6 hitouts).

At both levels, whoever our new coach is needs to re-teach our players to be front and square at contests  :banghead.

Hugo kicks inside 50 to Cumberland who is out-numbers 1-vs-3. He does well to bring it down but no one is front and square and

Paid for our lack of intensity from the midway point of the 2nd quarter to 3/4 time. Where was that effort and desperation in the last quarter in the previous 1.5 quarters? Add poor skills and decision making and it's a game we could've but didn't win. Just not good enough.

Everyone into MRJ for fumbling which is true but his role in the seniors has him nowhere near the ball most of the time which doesn’t help his development. It happened to Dan Rioli and that role crucifies young players.
Belongs with more mature goers like Mansell.

Spot on, the more he gets his hands on the ball the less mistakes he should make. He will gain confidence from today accumulating a lot of possessions.

Maurice - can't question his effort today and his last quarter in the middle gave us back the momentum which got us so close. His handling skills are the missing piece. Some of it is clearly confidence.

Dow - Game matched the team's. Strong first 1.5 quarters and his last was decent. But we got beaten up in the middle in between that.

Sonsie - quiet first quarter. Got more into the game in the second and his last was good. He was in and out of the game. As a centre square player like Dow, went missing when Box Hill got on top at the stoppages mid-2nd to 3/4 time.

Hugo - finished the game strongly. If only he could be a reliable kick.

Clarke - probably our cleanest albeit he's an outside player so you'd expect that. In and out of the game as well.

Green - first 1.5 quarters was noticeable until drifting out of the game. His poor footskills are what is going to stop him becoming an AFL footballer.

Brown and Trezise - lower possession games from both of them than usual. They've both had better and more influential ganes.

Cumberland - our only winning forward on the ground and he made the most of his chances. You can't ask for much more when he kicks half the team's goal. Thought his attitude and effort off the ball was good too.

Samson and Biggie - our talls were beaten today. Samson at least competed well in the ruck. Biggie either has a blinder or a mare (not much in between) and today was the latter.

Bradtke - don't see him at Punt Rd next year.

Campbell - must have only played a half as I didn't notice him after half-time. First game back from a long lay off.

Our forwardline is disfunctional with only genuine target is Ben Miller. Cumberland must play.

We don't score enough with and without momentum swings.

Disagree, he needed a game like this in the ressies. What would be criminal is not rewarding him with a senior game next week.

VFL Tigers push Hawks all the way

BOX    2.5       6.7       10.9     12.12 (84)

Goal Kickers:

Richmond: Cumberland (6), Sonsie, Nyuon, Green, Clarke, Brindley, Bradtke

Best Players: Cumberland, Clarke, Dow, Sonsie, Rioli, Trezise

-----------------------------------------------------------------

Bleary eyed Richmond faithful, fresh from consuming the Northern hemisphere sporting smorgasbord, made their way to Punt Road Oval for a morning clash between the Tigers and Box Hill.

In a high-octane, end-to-end game with not many stoppages, it was Box Hill that snuck its nose past the winning post by three points, the final score reading, 12.12 (84) to 12.9 (81).

Noah Cumberland gave the attending Tiger Army a reason to cheer with a productive start in attack.

He had the hot hand early, nailing the opening goal of the game from a tricky spot, then drilling his second from beyond the arc.

The dynamic and enigmatic forward starred with six majors, showcasing his potency and power in the air and at ground level.

Whilst the goals showcased his talent, Cumberland’s altruistic acts to bring his teammates into the game would have warmed the hearts of the coaching hierarchy and his piers.

Both sides looked to move the ball at speed in transition, which invited excitement and anxiety as the ball pinged between the arcs.

One play epitomized the trend of the game, as Mohammed Yassine tucked the ball under the arm, burnt off a chasing Hawk and placed the ball expertly to Kaelan Bradtke.

Bradtke’s set-shot stayed the left side of the right post, extending Richmond’s lead beyond two goals.

Cumberland’s first quarter went from good to great, as his quickfire snap sailed through, his third, in an electric start to the game.

Box Hill hit back late, as Richmond held a nine-point lead at the first change.

The Tigers looked sharp early in the second term, as Tyler Sonsie, Angus Hicks, Maurice Rioli and Hugo Ralphsmith propelled the ball forward with speed and skill.

Bigoa Nyuon slotted Richmond’s fifth major, holding his position deep in attack and judging the flight of the ball superbly.

The Hawks hit back with back-to-back goals, cutting the margin to five points.

Richmond had a chance to extend its lead further as Austin Johnson plucked at forward-half intercept, his set shot from the paint of 50 just drifting right of the goal post.

Jacob Koschitzke saluted as soon as the ball left his boot, levelling up the scores minutes before halftime.

Koschitzke made it four-on-the-bounce for the Hawks, sliding through back-to-back goals, handing his side the lead for the first time of the morning.

Box Hill clinched a seven-point lead with a four-goal-to-one second quarter.

The Tigers owned the territory early in the third quarter, with Cumberland capitalizing with his fourth major on the back of fingertip defence from skipper, Lachlan Street.

The game turned into a shootout between Cumberland and Koschitzke, as the Hawk eased through his third, handing Box Hill back the lead.

Hicks set-up Cumberland’s fifth, surging in from the fat-side wing to spoil a squaring ball, igniting the Tigers down the outer wing, with Bradtke finding Cumberland on the lead.

The dynamic forward’s fifth was near identical to his first, sliding through a set-shot from the Richmond Station pocket.

Box Hill once again regained the lead with back-to-back goals as Sam Butler and Koschitzke showed their class inside 50.

The Hawks pushed their lead to three goals before Cumberland swooped on a loose ball, swung onto his left boot, and pierced the ball onto the chest of Judson Clarke.

Clarke steeled himself and launched the ball over the goal umpire’s hat, cutting the margin to two goals and celebrated with customary energy and exuberance.

The Hawks kicked the opening goal of the last quarter, however Cumberland’s fingertip smother led to the Tigers’ ninth major with Nyuon marking on the goal line and handing it to Steely Green.

Box Hill struck back swiftly before the man of the moment, Cumberland swooped onto a centre clearance from Mykelti Lefau and snapped his sixth goal.

Tom Brindley’s acute set-shot tightened the margin and Sonsie cooly brought the game within a straight kick.

Richmond fought, scrapped and clawed to the line, ultimately falling just short.

Cannot disagree more.

There is no role for players who only chase and apply pressure.
Every fwd should be expected to chase and harass but they should also have a hurt factor as well.
The Riolis copped it and so did Castagna and Mansell does as well.
They cop it because the definition of the role is all wrong.

Defenders continue to rebound it out of defense with gay abandon weather the so called pressure fwds are there or not.
They play loose and dont give a poo about the likes of mrj because they are not being hurt, they are not getting  goals kicked against them or having goals  created goals for others.

We take credit for the manic fwd pressure of three small fwds but Hawthorn also won three flags based on the same sort of thing with the big difference their small fwds were far better rounded than ours.

All three chased and Harassed with only really Puopolo more a specialist pressure player. The other two cyril and Bruest  hurt teams offensively as well and had to be minded. They all actually laid good strong tackles and plenty of them.

I say enough of this glass half full they only need to be pressure players and bring on the glass full well rounded small fwds who do it all. After all it is no longer 2017 - 2019 where you could get away with just pressure in the right system unfortunately those days are long gone. Nothing but a pressure fwd nowadays really has become a liability.

VFL Report: Round 18

Richmond VFL coach Steve Morris provides a summary of how the Tigers’ players performed in last Saturday's loss to Hawthorn at the Swinburne Centre.

Thomson Dow (25 disposals, 12 contested possessions, four clearances)

"Had another really good game in and around the contest. He was one of our leading possession getters and had high numbers in contested possessions. He's in really good form."

Maurice Rioli (23 disposals, 13 contested possessions, seven tackles, six clearances)

"He led us for contested possessions, tackles and clearances. He played on ball for the majority of the day and provided us with plenty of pressure in and around the footy. It was great to see him show his strengths further up the field."

Hugo Ralphsmith (23 disposals, four rebound-50s, three tackles)

"He was very good on the day. Offensively, he provided us a lot of rebound and defensively, he was very sound. Loved the way he approached the game after coming in from AFL level."

Tyler Sonsie (23 disposals, six marks, five clearances, one goal)

"Had a reasonably good day as a part of our on-ball mix. He had five clearances, was able to hit the scoreboard, and he continues his good form."

Judson Clarke (19 disposals, eight marks, six inside-50s, one goal)

"Looked like he was going to make something happen every time he went near the footy. He played well both up forward and on a wing, and continued his good form."

Steely Green (16 disposals, six round  marks, four inside-50s, one goal)

"His game was a good one. He got himself into some really good spots and is improving each and every week as a player. He uses the ball beautifully and has really leant into our program."

Tom Brown (15 disposals, three tackles, three rebound-50s)

"Probably didn't have quite the game that he's had over the past month. He's been in some ripping form and was once again solid on the weekend. We'd like the ball in his hands a little bit more, as we saw his decision-making is exceptional."

James Trezise (15 disposals, three marks, three rebound-50s)

"Another very good game from him. He was solid in the contest and used the ball well. We're encouraging him to be more attacking and take the game on. But he is tracking really well and we're really pleased with his progress."

Noah Cumberland (14 disposals, five marks, six goals)

"Almost the complete game from Noah. He used the ball really well, hit the scoreboard heavily, and put some really good pressure on as well. He was pretty crook at half-time and still hit the scoreboard in the second half, so very pleased with the way Noah went about it."

Bigoa Nyuon (11 disposals, six marks, one goal)

"Had another reasonable game. He was able to hit the scoreboard and gave another off that he probably should have kicked himself. I'm looking forward to seeing him really rip a game apart in the next couple of weeks because it's something he know can do."

Samson Ryan (10 disposals, 33 hit-outs, five marks)

"It was a fantastic opportunity for Samson to come up against an experience ruckman who Hawthorn have high hopes for. He battled away really well, attacked the footy, and was very close to ripping the game apart himself."

Kaelan Bradtke (six disposals, five marks, one goal)

"He's continued to improve in recent weeks. It probably wasn't his best game on the weekend, but he showed some really positive signs once again and hopefully he can continue progressing in the coming weeks."

Seth Campbell (five disposals, three marks, one clearance)

"It's just fantastic to have Seth back. He's such an exciting player for our footy Club and we're very lucky to have him. I was just pleased to see him get through the first half unscathed, as there are big things in store for him."
