Title: Which Tigers have improved this year?
Post by: one-eyed on July 21, 2023, 07:22:08 PM
From Barrett's 'Sliding Doors' column:

IF ...
they're wearing numbers 45 and 46 and both are still listed as rookies ...

THEN ...
there are clearly bigger names at Richmond than Tylar Young and Ben Miller. But both have made good progress this year in key position roles.

Best 1st year player pickings are pretty slim, really only Tylar Young.

Jack Ross for me. Vastly improved because he's become more consistent

Young: I’m not a huge fan of Young and I think he’s out of his depth most times but I can’t say he hasn’t been amazing in that only a couple of years ago he was just a guy playing local footy. It’s tough to make it in the AFL and he has not only made it but he is picked every week to play on a big forward. Not an easy gig and credit to where credit is due.

Miller: I have seen his work in the VFL and was calling for him to get more senior games. Has proven to be a good contributor and is highly skilled by foot too. He’s got some excellent potential if he realise it and we’ve seen glimpses of that in some games.

Mansell: Only 2 games last season to playing every game prior to that ridiculous suspension. Not gifted with blistering speed or x-factor brilliance he has had to learn to play the difficult small forward role and in my opinion has been consistent.
Unlike MRJ he can find the goals (averaging just under 1 goal a game)
Unlike Cumberland he doesn’t give up but will fight it out from the start of the game to the final siren.

Ross: not a huge fan but starting to see the consistency I was hoping for and seems to becoming a good contributor each week.

Its official the cupboard is bare.

Young lol he is nearly  25 and i have no doubt at all if Gibcus and Tarrant were fit he would not have got a game. To make it worse i think Miller is better suited along with Nyuon to a key defensive role. If there is a definition of a glass half full player then Young is it.

Imo Jack Ross continues to be just a meh sort of player. What frustrates me is we have  better credentialled outside players and refuse to play em or even in Picketts case move him to allow Ross a wing to then struggle. Not a lot of difference to last year except maybe he has found a little bit more ball and used it a bit better at times. Keep saying just an average type who probably warrants a spot on the list but we have to be aiming for better as a starting 22.

Mansell is not a forward thats it in a nutshell. yet we play him for supposed pressure. This bloke has been around for how long now AGED 23 and as a small should  be near his prime He really should be doing far better than he has.
The down side to playing blokes like him is we deny others opportunity.

Miller well im not sure about how well he has done as a kpp. He has done okay playing as second ruck but for me as a forward just does not take contested marks and lacks a real presence in the air. We refuse to play him in defence where imo he played his best footy at senior level.
Nearly 24 in year 6 and only managed 23 games. I really dont think he has made a position his own not helped by the way we pick and use him.

Finally who in all honesty would be shocked if in time all 4 were moved on.

Young was a late starter and sure he makes the occasional mistake but hey how many did Rance make. He has been Rick solid in defence all year. Will only get better. He is a find

Think Banks has a solid future from what I’ve seen the last couple of weeks. Competitor and doesn’t give an inch.
