Certainly do look beatable atm the demons. Knowing our luck Oliver will be back for the game.

Think we should be playing Vlas fwd otherwise we’ll have may and lever intercepting everything rather than just Sicily.

Richmond v Melbourne preview

Andrew Slevison
SEN
27 July 2023

This presents as a fairly tasty encounter at the MCG on Sunday.

Richmond is in winning form having saluted six times in seven games, a run that has the club sitting on the edge of the top eight under caretaker Andrew McQualter.

Melbourne has won three on the trot to straighten things up after back-to-back defeats in Rounds 15 and 16.

Simon Goodwin’s side has been fortunate un winning the last two, coming over the top of Brisbane before holding off a fast-finishing Adelaide. Nevertheless, the wins have been banked.

Many would believe the gap between these two sides is monumental, however, only 2.5 wins stands between the Tigers and the Demons. A gap that is not insurmountable.

The Dees have had the Tigers’ measure in recent years, winning three on the trot after they had lost five straight between 2017 and 2020.

The key personnel Melbourne has sidelined - namely Clayton Oliver and Bayley Fritsch - gives the Tigers a sniff. They are playing well under McQualter and a win here would put them in a strong finals position, but their slow starts over the past few weeks could hurt them against a quality opponent.

Goodwin’s Demons are looking to establish a top four slot and with that dangling carrot they should prove too good… but just.

Tip: Melbourne by 8 points.

Tigers or Demons? Richmond vs Melbourne: picks and predictions

Alex Donnelly
Codesports
July 28, 2023

Richmond’s season has some life in it after a massive come from behind victory over Hawthorn last week, but a sterner test comes here against the Demons. Melbourne are looking to lock up their own top four spot heading into finals as the Tigers and Demons clash at the MCG on Sunday July 30.

WHAT WE’RE LOOKING AT

* Richmond has covered the line in seven of its last eight matches against Melbourne.
* Melbourne has won the last three games between the two.
* Seven of the last eight matches between Richmond and Melbourne have gone UNDER the total match points line.

THE MATCH-UP

Top eight and top four aspirations go on the line this Sunday at the iconic MCG between two of the AFL’s traditional clubs as Richmond and Melbourne do battle in prime time.

Richmond came from the clouds last weekend to beat Hawthorn by a point and keep its slim finals chances alive thanks to the three game win streak the Tigers kept alive.

The Demons have also won three straight after a four point win over the Adelaide Crows at the MCG.

The last time these two teams met it was a comfortable 96-78 win for the Demons, who trailed the Tigers by four goals at a point in that game.

The last three between the two have hit the total points under and that trend looks as if it will continue again this weekend.

TOP EIGHT THERE FOR THE SWIPING

Richmond, as it has been for the last few weeks, simply need to keep winning or the season is over. Taking on the Demons at the MCG is as tough as it gets.

In the last three weeks the Tigers have started to score freely, but the wins have come against Sydney, West Coast and Hawthorn with three scores of 88. 96 and 98.

It’s is a completely different ask coming up against a Demons teams that’s the third ranked defensive squad in the AFL currently, with Richmond only ranked 12th for offence.

Tim Taranto and Jacob Hopper came across to Richmond recruits at a massive cost and its paid off for the Tiges. Taranto is high up in the Brownlow betting and has arguably had his best season to date so far. In 2023, Taranto has averaged 30.4 disposals a game and bang on a goal a game as well.

Importantly, Taranto has kicked two or more goals in his last three day games at the MCG, with 30 or more touches in five of his last six Sunday games on top of that.

Hopper has played four games back since injury derailed his season after a brilliant start. In 18 games at the MCG in his short career to date, Hopper averages exactly 22 possessions a game. He needs to go beyond that for the Tigers to have a chance.

LOCK IN THAT TOP FOUR SPOT

With a win on Sunday Melbourne will lock up a finish in the top four for the third consecutive year.

With that top four finish comes the all important double chance and the Dees will know that it all goes on the line this Sunday.

Christian Petracca has been doing everything he can to lift Melbourne: un the last five games he has amassed 139 possessions and 9 goals, which is a phenomenal effort and why he’s one of the Brownlow Medal favourites.

Simply said: if Petracca fires, Melbourne win this game.

Max Gawn could dominate this game with Tiger ruckman Toby Nankervis still missing due to suspension. He comes off of two brilliant games against Adelaide and Brisbane.

Gawn has had 42 touches and three goals in his last two games. With a career average of 16.4 disposals a game against the Tigers, this game looks ripe for a big performance from Gawn.

The Demon big man also looks set to be the All-Australian ruckman once again and a dominant performance on Sunday could almost lock that up.

VINEY STANDING UP WHEN NEEDED MOST

Jack Viney has been fantastic for the Dees since the injury to Clayton Oliver. Viney has added goal kicking to his repertoire, something that had been lacking in recent seasons. He has kicked a goal in six of his last seven games at the MCG, alongside having 25 or more disposals in his last six.

THE PICK

It’s the Demons: their form has been much better than that of the Tigers as of late and they should lock up a top four spot with a win on Sunday.

THE CERTAINTIES FOR ROUND 20 - Richmond versus Melbourne

Andrew Slevison
SEN
29 July 2023

Balta to take 6+ marks, have 4+ rebound 50s

Noah Balta is in some top form in defence for Richmond.

Last week against Hawthorn he took 14 marks and had six rebound 50s, taking his season average to 6.2 and 5.7 in those two categories.

Balta is the key in defence for the Tigers and his efforts will be instrumental if his side is to continue their winning run.

We’re banking on the athletic Balta to take at least six marks while providing at last four rebound 50s at the MCG on Sunday.

Langdon to have 20+ disposals

Ed Langdon has picked up 20 or more disposals in 11 of 18 games for Melbourne this year.

Four of those have come in the last five weeks.

The wingman has a decent record against the Tigers, particularly recently where he has tallied 82 touches across his last three games.

Langdon should again enjoy the vast expanses of the 'G and gather at last 20 touches this weekend.

Conspiracy theory time - will Melbourne want to win ?? Finishing 4th and not leaving Victoria may be preferable to playing Brisbane/ port interstate.

Been a round of upsets. If we want it bad enough we will win. Cannot kick the ball long especially into forward 50. Have to make a dirty ground ball game and bring our premiership pressure to the table. If. We play our forward at all costs running game and not bomb it in long we will win.
If we play stupid long down the line crap they will slaughter us

Hopefully it’s raining otherwise I still think we should play vlas fwd. their lineup looks like JVR is their only tall fwd with melksham their only other marking target. Would expect petracca to spend a lot of time fwd but even so surely balta, young, grimes and broad can handle those 2/3 between them.

If they win they’ll be 1 win off second and not having to leave the G all the way to a flag. They way port and Brisbane are going I wouldn’t put it passed them either.

Goals: Baker 2, Riewoldt, Martin, Soldo, Prestia, McIntosh, Bolton, D.Rioli

Honestly, a couple of very poor skill errors/decisions aside, I thought we were bloody brilliant. Not bombing it long into the fwd line at every opportunity and even when we do we are bringing it to ground. Think lever + may have only had 3 intercept marks combined. Tackling and pressuring is immense too. Play like that second half and I’m confident we’ll get the 4 point  :gotigers

If you have to see it again Nicholls to know for sure what happened then why did you pay HTB against Hopper? If it's not clear then you don't guess and pay it then penalise us further with a 50  :thumbsdown.

Hard to see our defence be so easily decimated. Was our strength for so many. years. Balta, as brilliant as he can be, just might lack the intelligence and mental toughness to be a great defender. He gave up today. Grimes is a shell of himself and young just isnt that good. Vlastuin makes more mistakes than ever and is slipping over like no one else. With our only promising defender coming through being gibcus ( and even he has barely played so who knows where he sits now ) we start to look pretty bare down there.

It was disappointing to say the least considering what was on the line and how we were in a position to complete upset round.

Our defence was bizarrely out of sorts today. I get players can have bad games but for Balta and grimes to be out of sorts and Vlastuin being a liability in the first half, we don’t have enough talent to cover that.

It’s such a shame because Martin wound the clock back and the midfield had great ascendancy for large patches of the game

Few take aways.

Melbourne are best team in the comp. With Oliver, Fritsch to come back in. Load up.
Our best is still excellent. Unfortunately a lot has to go right for that to happen. When Dusty and Bolton are firing, we are top tier.
Defense who have been very good all year, were off today. Broad, Balta and Vlastuin all dropped in form massively. Grimes who has been average all year stayed average. Young did OK at times.

Ultimately, we aren't a top 4 team and went very close to beating them.

The game followed the same pattern as the Anzac game earlier in the season. We lead for most of it, but Melbourne got on top in the guts after half-time via Gawn and they suffocated and overran us.

Petty and Melksham kicking 10 goals between them is an indictment of how poorly our backline played :facepalm.

Van Rooyen also says hi again to Matt Clarke for overlooking him. That's 7 goals he has kicked against us this year.

Lot of doom and gloom on here but I thought we were miles better this week than last week, and Gawn & Petracca took over in the last and we couldn't go with them. They are a premiership contender and we clearly are not, but this wasn't our worst performance by a long shot. Riewoldt and Cotchin will announce their retirements very soon, finals are out of the question. Let's get games into a couple of kids that deserve a genuine chance: Bauer, Brown and maybe get Sonsie in.

Max gawn had something like 13 possessions in the last quarter? He went up a gear that very few can match. Unlike the Anzac match where I think the score flattered us I think we had a solid dip for 3 quarters. We absolutely got over ran by the talent of a top 4 side

The only negative for me is Balta had his colours lowered bad.

I laugh when people defend those scum bags, and how our games get treated compared to others. Kosi Pickett goal, those other stupid decisions in the last,  Tom lynch last year. I could name 1000 examples and unless you're blind then those rats cannot be defended in any way.

Such a big game this week but surely Cotch is omitted. Playing one down with him in the team currently. The champ is past it :shh

Probably the best we have looked all year ….just not good enough.

Our defence which has been very good all year let us down today.

CLEARANCE SHOOT-OUT

It was a wonderful game of Australian Rules at the MCG on Sunday, although not sure the coaches will look fondly at the clearance impact. This was two midfields with a super aggressive attitude which means they weren’t always super keen to work defensively. The Tigers gave up 12 goals from clearance which is more than double the AFL average. Their next worst result this year was seven goals in Round 2 versus Adelaide. They might have been unlucky on the back of Max Gawn’s dominance, but they also might’ve been too kick-chasing instead of defending better. Melbourne also gave up nine goals from clearance and although they won the battle on Sunday, those sorts of numbers won’t win them the war in September. When the final margin was five goals, three-goal differential was far too much leeway from the Tigers.

43 to 75 inside tells a story.  It didn't feel like that watching.
Our mids should be horrified by that stat.

AFL Report Card: Round 20

RICHMOND

The Tigers would beat most sides with the level they showed on Sunday, but unfortunately faced a Melbourne side that is clicking into gear at the right time of year. There’ll be positives to take out for aspiring senior coach Andrew McQualter, but the final quarter was a stark reminder there is a gap between Richmond and the top sides in the competition, even though they’re still in the hunt for a finals berth. The Western Bulldogs are up next and that will be a fascinating contest in the context of the top eight race.

In the votes

Dustin Martin kicked three goals, had chances at more and was in sparkling form. He looms large in the final few weeks of the Tigers’ home and away campaign. Shai Bolton also offered plenty and Dion Prestia flew the flag in the middle.

Room for improvement

Ivan Soldo did his best but ultimately was run ragged by Max Gawn. The Tigers desperately missed the suspended Toby Nankervis given the task Gawn presents. The final quarter saw them left in the dust by the Dees, managing two goals but conceding 6.4.

Grade

Scary to think they won the battle without their best clearance contested ball winner in oliver. They get him back and fit for finals and they are gunna take some stopping.

OVERREACTIONS, POSITIVES & NEGATIVES FOR ROUND 20

The Key Takeaway: Good enough, but not for long enough

Richmond played well on Sunday.

Their best was pretty good, but it just wasn’t for long enough.

They allowed Melbourne to continually drive the ball inside 50 in the second half and eventually the dam wall burst.

The inside-50 count in the second half read 41-17 in favour of the Demons, including 21-6 in the final quarter. Those numbers proved costly for the Tigers in the end.

Andrew McQualter’s side was great in the first half, and decent for part of the third term, but it all finally came to a head and resulted in a 32-point loss.

The Positive: Ability to match it with a top-four team

Despite the defeat, the Tigers did match it with a team at the pointy end of the ladder.

The result probably shows where they are at - around five goals worse than the top four - but the performance for much of the game suggests they can still play a role in the finals, provided they make it.

Richmond’s best footy is pretty solid and it led to a 20-point lead early in the third term.

McQualter will take plenty away from the defeat but there is not much time to think about things with a season-defining fixture against the Western Bulldogs at Marvel Stadium on Friday night.

If they can sneak into the eight they could possibly do some damage. If they lose that, then it’s going to be awfully difficult and the ability to match it with a team inside the four will be null and void.

The Negative: Defence outplayed, midfield beaten

The Tigers’ defence has been their bedrock in recent years, but on Sunday it was badly shown up.

Harrison Petty, Jake Melksham and Jacob Van Rooyen formed somewhat of a makeshift forward line in the absence of injured duo Bayley Fritsch and Tom McDonald, and with Ben Brown and Brodie Grundy out of the side.

Petty had kicked 4.1 for the year prior to his career-best bag of six straight, Melksham had kicked 11 for the season and no more than two in a game in 2023, while Van Rooyen hadn’t kicked multiple goals in a game since Round 6.

That trio combined for 14.0 in a remarkable showing of forward line execution, dominating the Richmond defence of Noah Balta, Nathan Broad, Tylar Young and co.

As mentioned earlier, the inside 50s kept coming made possible by Melbourne’s dominance around the contest in kicking 76 of their 120 points from clearances.

The Tigers lost clearances 49-40 in the end with the Dees doing most of their damage late in the game once they had broken the backs of their opponents.

Get what you mean, but Round 1, Dreamtime and the first loss to Dogs cost us finals. Plus losing Lynch.
