Hey @one-eyed, if our VFL team do make the final 10, do you know what the ruling is regarding how many games the AFL listed players are allowed to have played in the seniors to stay eligible to play in the VFL finals?
-
Hey @one-eyed, if our VFL team do make the final 10, do you know what the ruling is regarding how many games the AFL listed players are allowed to have played in the seniors to stay eligible to play in the VFL finals?
Assuming it's still the same rules as last year, amc11.
Competition rules state that players must have featured in six VFL games during that particular season, and played no more than 12 AFL games*, to be eligible to play in the VFL finals.[
* AFL games where players had been unused medical substitutes would not count against their eligibility to play during the VFL finals.
https://www.afl.com.au/news/832363/vfl-ticks-off-will-setterfield-selection-for-carlton-against-collingwood-after-eligibility-queries
Excluded: Ross (16* AFL games), Young (16*), Mansell (15), Ryan (14), Miller (13), Ralphsmith (13) and Clarke (13 but injured anyway) who have played VFL this year.
I'm not sure if being injured and not playing at all at any level for a lengthy period is a caveat. Seth Campbell missed most of the year with a groin injury. Even if he plays both of the last two VFL H/A games then he will only have played 5 VFL games which would exclude him as well. Not really fair if he is ineligible due to being injured.
Eligible: Cumberland (9 AFL games), M.Rioli (8 ), Banks (5), Soldo (5*), Coulthard (3*), Sonsie (3), Bauer (2*), Dow (1*), plus all those who have only played VFL this year (Brown, Biggie, Bradtke, Green, Trezise).
-
I thought the exception to that rule was if your AFL side was still playing finals there was no cap
Oh wait.... :help won't apply to us
-

Yes Seth Campbell will be very unlucky especially considering all the byes this year and I'm fairly sure the last bye would have been one where he would've played some game time.

Yassine held 35 out. Misses the set shot.

Port turnover at our CHF. Street long shot on the run misses.

Well, that's 30 minutes of your life you won't get back :P. Geez we have some dumb players and/or who can't hit an open target by hand or foot under no physical pressure :facepalm. How to screw up your F50 entries 101 :facepalm.

LOL at 4 dodgy handballs in a row in the wet in defence. That's the level of footy intelligence today :help.

Anothor dumb and poor handball in defence in the wet and surprise surprise we gift Port Melbourne a goal :facepalm.

Getting a lesson in basic wet weather footy today from the 15th ranked team. Embarrassing!
17 - 28
-
Bradke is dumb as dog poo. Just pushes players in the back every contest.
Sonsie is softer than a beer poo. Refuses to put his body on the line
Rioli is less interested in the game than an MCG seagull; and
Morris is completely clueless
Banks and Brown look ok. The rest are stuffen useless
-
Some of our VFL listed players aren't even VFL standard
Today, some of AFL-listers aren't either.
Thick as bricks about wet weather footy :banghead.
-
Sonsie is 100% clangers :lol
-
He just shanked one to a teammate :lol
-
Ryan takes the ball out of the ruck at the F-50 throw-in to Street who finds Green in the pocket 20m out. Green's kick misses the goals and from the loose ball, Port clear.
We get it back. Campbell with the shot hits the post.
18 - 30

Green long inside 50 to the hot spot and it goes off hands and through for a point.

Port defender drags the ball in and it's HTB. Free to Samson 40 out. Misses.

Samson drops a sitter in the defensive goalsquare and gifts Port another goal :facepalm

Sonsie's development's gone backwards at a rate of knots...wtf's happened? :help
I would offer that confidence is an important thing these days and when yours is shot you're going to go backwards
The only positive so far is trying MRJ in the middle. Good for his development IMHO
-
Take back what I said about Brindley being worth a rookie spot too.... :-[

Need a new VFL coach as well.... :shh
Would agree with that

Embarrassing! Clueless and skill-less. We are set up trying to play dry weather footy in the wet. That's on the coach as much as the dopey players.

I would offer that confidence is an important thing these days and when yours is shot you're going to go backwards
He's gone from being close to bog in the first half of an AFL final in only his 6th game to being unable to hit the side of barn and scared of his own shadow at VFL level... :huh
-
Sonsie's development's gone backwards at a rate of knots...wtf's happened? :help
Interrupted preseason. Hardly trained for most of it. Not the only Tiger either in hindsight. Last preseason was horrendous.

And I also wonder what his role is exactly. Seems to change weekly. Inside, outside, wing.... I'm surprised Morris hasn't plonked him at either FF or FB

Smart move mentioned it earlier. Would have been a directive from the AFL coaches this week
Like giving Bradtke a go in the ruck as well
Granted he looks a bit lost around the ground but this is in part what the VFL is for; development
Been very disappointed with Steely Greene. Needs to learn to attach contests, not be a spectator

I'd say Hugo has been held out in the 2nd half in case there is late injury put tomorrow
-
Port defender dives on the ball and Melville wins the HTB free 25m out. Shanks the kick and it goes wide and barely makes the distances. Off Samson's hands for a throw-in.

Would love to see Kane Lambert take over our VFL side

Sonsie started to look like a footballer again the second half. :shh
MRJ in the guts. :clapping
Has his flaws but still reckon Lefau's worth a punt as a rookie if we have to upgrade one of the VFL boys. His tackling alone should get him a look in. :shh :shh

Possibly for the first time I agree- the first two lines only. Lefau can continue to play NRL in the VFL sqad :shh
-
Given the way they tackle we could do with someone playing NRL in the AFL squad, Dogs & Filth have been doing it all year and are going alright - or you just scared he'll take your spot? :shh :shh
-
Our VFL team is now in 10th spot. Depends on Carlton tomorrow against the Casey Demons if we stay there at the end of the round.
Next week final round is an early "wildcard final" to make the wildcard finals, as Norf are 9th and just two points ahead of us on the ladder. So, destiny is in our own hands. Win and we're in; lose and it's season over.

VFL Tigers show true grit to down Borough
By Brenton Mann
Richmond Media
12 August 2023
RICH 1.5 2.8 7.10 10.12 (72)
PORT 1.3 5.6 5.7 7.9 (51)
Goal Kickers:
Richmond: Olden (3), Lefau (2), Sonsie, Melville, Johnson, Bradtke, Banks
Best Players:
Richmond: Rioli, Sonsie, Lefau, Nyuon, Teal, Olden
---------------------------------------------------
Richmond reclaimed its wildcard position with a gritty 21-point come-from-behind win over Port Melbourne at the Swinburne Centre, the final score reading 10.12 (72) to 7.9 (51).
The side's focus coming into it’s do-or-die clash with Port Melbourne was to harness the power of teamwork, to find strength in unity.
“No one can whistle a symphony. It takes a whole orchestra to play it.” - H.E. Luccock
The Tigers took it to the nth degree, after all seventeen players on the field helped Tyler Sonsie stretch his right calf and hamstring after the silky midfielder slotted the sealing goal in the final term.
Showers rolled in just prior to the opening bounce, which meant goals were a premium and field position vital.
The Tigers were able to play the game in their half for large portions of the opening term, with the nous of Brad Melville leading to the first major.
Bigoa Nyuon was shifted to a key defensive post after his deployment further afield and assumed his customary repelling role with ease.
Hugo Ralphsmith and Tom Brown provided the dynamic rebound from behind the ball, both showcasing sure hands and a clear mind in a frantic first quarter.
Mohammed Yassine took to the sodden conditions like a duck to water, building on his good form from weeks prior.
Yassine’s speed and quick thinking ahead of the ball led to forays forward and had Port Melbourne defenders constantly looking over their shoulder.
Both sides registered a solitary major in the first quarter, with Richmond taking a two-point lead into quarter time.
The Borough had the better of the territory and the scoring in the second term, slotting four goals to one.
Richmond struggled to get flow into its ball movement and thus was left to defend in its back-half for longer than it wanted.
Port Melbourne made the most of its chances and took a 16-point lead into the main break.
Tigers’ senior coach, Steve Morris put the onus on his chargers at halftime, imploring the young men in the yellow and black to up their work rate and their want to work for each other.
Richmond’s midfield brigade was asked sternly to up the ante and Mykelti Lefau and Maurice Rioli answered the call.
The brutish nature in which Lefau plays the game ignited his side, with Rioli sparking life into the Tigers both with and without the ball.
Rioli was clean and composed when surging from the centre bounce, and mounted pressure on anyone that was wearing royal blue and red.
It was a warming performance by Rioli on a gloomy, wintery afternoon.
Cam Olden would have experienced very similar conditions on Saturdays in Leongatha, and showed his wares in the third quarter with a trio of majors that turned the tide for Richmond.
Sam Banks also showed that he cut his teeth on the soggy grounds of Tasmania, guiding through a right-foot set-shot that extended Richmond’s lead.
The second half of the third quarter was some of the best football Richmond played for the year, a response that was welcomed by Morris and his lieutenants.
Richmond converted a 16-point deficit into a 15-point lead by the final change.
After a special third quarter, Austin Johnson added to the highlight reel, with a right-foot snap in front of the Jack Dyer Stand that led to a mobbing from his brethren.
The Borough was plucky in the last quarter, which raised the anxiety levels of the drenched Tiger faithful.
Richmond showed maturity and growth by locking the game down and then Lefau remained engaged inside 50, causing a turnover and then soccering through a goal that would make the Matildas proud.
Sonsie’s goal sealed a meritorious win that kept the hope flickering for a finals berth.

Bradtke rucking a lot of the game over Biggie etc? Might explain his low score return.

Biggy was abysmal last week. Good to see him interested and invested yesterday
On Sonsie, Dow getting a game ahead of him is all about currency, trying to give Dow some currency come trade time. Granted to me it won't make one iota of difference but whatever
Sonsie isn't going anywhere, can't see him being put up for trade so understand (sort of) why he's running around in the VFL

Interesting that Cotchin mentioned Dow in his retirement speech when talking about younger quicker players he needed to step aside for. :shh

He played midfield in his last VFL game too though and got even more of the ball, just still had questionable disposal and decision making. Must be played on ball at VFL level though

VFL Report: Round 21
Richmond VFL coach Steve Morris provides a summary of how the Tigers’ players performed in last Saturday's win over Port Melbourne at the Swinburne Centre.
Tyler Sonsie (31 disposals, 11 contested possessions, eight inside-50s, one goal)
"He was a part of a midfield brigade that really got on top late in the game. I loved his will to win late, and he finished with a fantastic shot on goal in the dying minutes to seal the game."
Maurice Rioli (20 disposals, 11 contested possessions, 13 tackles, eight inside-50s, seven clearances)
"Was an absolute standout on the day with 13 tackles and seven clearances from a midfield positions. He was just in absolutely everything in the second half, and was a major reason as to why we were able to win the game."
Bigoa Nyuon (17 disposals, four tackles, three inside-50s)
"Played down back and I thought he was really solid. For the majority of the day, his contested work and his body work in marking contests were really good, and he used the ball really well going over 90 per cent on a day that was tough to use the football."
Tom Brown (16 disposals, five rebound-50s, three marks)
"Another good game from him. He was pretty solid throughout the day. Whether it's in the air or on the ground level, he's giving us a really good contest and has improved exponentially this season."
Samson Ryan (16 disposals, 15 hit-outs, four marks, four tackles)
"A lot of 'almost' moments for Samson on the day. He had a solid game of footy without being outstanding. But, I'm certain he's in really good form and he'll start to convert some of those chances that he's getting forward of the footy."
James Trezise (16 disposals, seven rebound-50s, six tackles, two marks)
"Once again a very solid game from him. His tackling is equal to the best at the club, and he's just a really reliable defender who's in good form for us."
Sam Banks (15 disposals, five tackles, one goal)
"Loving how invested he is in his team. He finished with five tackles and used the ball really well. He kicked an important goal for us in the third quarter."
Steely Green (12 disposals, four inside-50s, three tackles)
"His pressure was really good, a couple of his chase down efforts were just outstanding to help us will the football back on the day. He's putting in a lot of work to improve his game."
Hugo Ralphsmith (11 disposals, four tackles, one mark)
"I was pleased with Hugo's first half, he did a lot right. He had 11 touches at 100 per cent and stepped in for four tackles, which was great to see."
Seth Campbell (seven disposals, two inside-50s, one mark)
"Really excited to have Seth back out on the park. He hasn't hit his straps just yet, but I feel like it's getting closer and looking forward to seeing him burst a game open."
Kaelan Bradtke (six disposals, 16 hit-outs, one mark, one goal)
"A really instrumental part of us being able to turn the game around. Went into the ruck and had 16 hit-outs in just a quarter of footy. What really impressed me was his follow up work around the ground."
