What the Tigers need to tweak for next week: Bring the intensity for Cotch
Richmond simply must play with much more intensity for Trent Cotchin’s farewell game against North Melbourne this coming weekend.
Across the last four weeks, the Tigers have conceded 68.36.(444) from 250 inside 50s. In response, they’ve kicked just 47.40.(322) from 190 inside 50s.
This Saturday they must make things difficult for North by applying increased amounts of pressure both through the midfield and inside their own forward 50 in a bid to deny the opposition easily moving the ball down the other end.
Otherwise they’ll be giving the Roos plenty of looks inside 50 from kickable areas and we can’t have that in Cotch’s final act at the MCG.

Don’t remind me of that disgraceful effort. :help
The only worse loss was the ‘13 EF loss to the Cheats. :banghead :banghead
But I’m over it now but your reminder has resurfaced some lingering PTSD.

Tigers or Roos? Richmond vs North Melbourne predictions
The Tigers and Roos clash at the ‘G on Saturday: can the Tigers send their legends out on a high?
Liam McAllion
Codebet
August 18, 2023
The Richmond Tigers’ finals hopes have faded but they are looking to bounce back against a North Melbourne team who are desperate for their first win since Round 2 at the MCG here.
WHAT WE’RE LOOKING AT
* North Melbourne have lost their last 19 matches.
* Richmond have failed to cover the line in their last five matches.
* 10 of the last 11 matches at the MCG have gone over the total points line.
North Melbourne haven’t won since Round 2 and although they have looked strong in games, they seem to run out of gas in the last quarter, losing five games this season by nine points or less.
Richmond have lost its last three matches, meaning the Tigers finals hopes are pretty much dead in the water, but the club will be looking to send off triple premiership stars Jack Riewoldt and Trent Cotchin out on a high, with the pair retiring after the game.
The Roos won this matchup this time last year by four points in a thriller at Marvel Stadium, but this game is at the MCG, where North haven’t won a game since 2017.
The Tigers love to use their pace off halfback and space to lead into at the MCG, scoring 90 or more points in seven of the last eight matches there and will take advantage of a weak Roos backline here.
POUNCING TIGERS
Richmond’s Shai Bolton has been a star for a number of years now, with his ability to hurt you in so many ways, whether that be with his pace to burst out of packs or his leaping ability to take a specky.
The speedy Tiger has had at least 20+ disposals and two goals in five games this season and will be licking his lips to face the Roos this week who simply don’t have a quick or agile enough backline matchup for him.
Jayden Short has been an absolute multi lock for the past few years with his ability to win the ball off half back and also build clearances in the midfield.
The versatile Tiger also loves playing against North Melbourne, averaging 24 disposals across the past four meetings. Much like Bolton, Short can use his speed and fitness to build disposals at both ends of the ground and frustrate the opposition here.
SHINBONER STRONG
Even after 278 games, Jack Ziebell continues to put his body on the line for his club, building his disposals in multiple ways In the process he’s also become a go-to multi choice for 25+ disposals across the past few years.
The former North skipper has cleared the 25+ disposal mark nine times this season, had 32 against Melbourne two weeks ago and much like the amazing final game from Ben Cunnington last week, Ziebell will want to end on a high and his teammates will be looking for him out of defence.
Luke Davies-Uniacke has put this young North side on his back and although they continue to lose, it isn’t because of his efforts in the midfield, averaging 28 disposals, 13 contested, seven clearances and has five goals across his last six matches.
LDU has become the complete midfielder for this side and this has helped his AFL Fantasy score to rocket. LDU’s averaging 113 points across the last six games and will use his bursts of speed to get through packs once again here.
THE PICK
Two of Richmond’s greatest players of all time, Trent Cotchin and Jack Riewoldt, have declared this is their last game and the side will want to do everything they can to help the three-time premiership stars finish on a high.
North very rarely play the MCG and have looked lost in recent years there, not winning at the ‘G since 2017 and the Tigers have beaten St Kilda, Geelong, Sydney and the Bulldogs there this season, who are all top eight contenders.

Richmond vs North Melbourne Preview
Andrew Slevison
SEN
18 August 2023
It will be a day of celebration at the MCG on Saturday.
Richmond will say goodbye to three-time premiership captain Trent Cotchin and fellow flag star Jack Riewoldt who have called time on their glittering careers.
Former North Melbourne skipper Jack Ziebell will also step away from the game following his distinguished career.
There will be plenty of emotion as both Tigers and Kangaroos fans farewell greats of their respective clubs.
And now onto the footy.
The Tigers have been poor over the last fortnight, going down to the Western Bulldogs and St Kilda both at Marvel Stadium. Andrew McQualter’s side appears to have lost the zest and vigour it was playing with prior to that.
The Roos have been extremely competitive over the last month, going down to St Kilda, West Coast and Essendon by single-figure margins while pushing Melbourne most of the way having led at half-time.
They present a tricky proposition for a Richmond team down on confidence.
The Tigers have conceded 68.36.(444) from 250 inside 50s across the last four weeks. In response, they’ve kicked just 47.40.(322) from 190 inside 50s.
That would be far more problematic if they were not playing a team that has lost 19 matches in a row.
With Cotchin and Riewoldt to honour, Richmond should flex its muscle and give the Tiger Army something to celebrate as the club’s successful era well and truly comes to an end.
Alastair Clarkson’s North will be no easy task but the Tigers should be able to put their foot down late and send off the pair of club legends in style.
Tip: Richmond by 22 points.

IF ...
you're a Tigers member and you're not at the MCG on Saturday ...
THEN ...
you'd want a good excuse. The farewell match for two Tigers greats, Cotch and Jack. Even with finals out of the question, surely the crowd gets beyond 60k? Maybe 70k? They deserve that number.

The certainties for Round 23: Richmond versus North Melbourne
Andrew Slevison
SEN
19 August 2023
Cotchin to have 20+ disposals and Riewoldt to kick 2+ goals
Trent Cotchin and Jack Riewoldt will both play their final game for Richmond on Saturday.
Three-time premiership captain Cotchin has averaged 16.3 disposals in his last season. In 15 games against the Kangaroos over his career, Cotchin has averaged more than 24 touches.
We’ll go with Cotchin to pick up at least 20 disposals.
11-time leading goal kicker Riewoldt has returned 31 goals from 20 games in 2023 and has kicked multiple goals against North in four of his last five.
We’re going with Riewoldt to kick at least two goals in his final act.
Ziebell to have 20+ disposals
Another retiring star is North’s Jack Ziebell.
The former Roos skipper averages 22 disposals and has had 20 or more touches on 15 occasions in 2023.
He has found form in his last two outings, tallying 59 disposals in those two weeks.
We’re banking on Ziebell to also finish on a high with at least 20 touches in his final match for the Kangas.

Yeah just your typical end of the season dead rubber.
Blokes are having half a go and just having a smile for the retirees.

Put the jumper on and make it your ambition to play your best and on top of that your personal performance is a tribute to two champions of our club that took us to the promise land 3 times.
This kind of effort is unacceptable and shouldn’t be tolerated or excused whatsoever.

This is terrible

These players don't care.

Dow has been pretty good again.

There's an argument you don't give the dumb ump a chance to pay a free against you but that wasn't high. The push was in the chest and Larkey threw his head back and the ump fell for it. That's two dives now by Larkey.
-
Maurice subbed on for Marlion.
-
Who got subbed off?
-
Unbelievable the garbage frees they're getting and the holds we aren't being paid
-
3/4 time
Richmond 3.2 10.5 11.10-76
North Melb. 2.3 6.7 10.7-67
Goals: Bolton 3, Martin 3, Soldo 2, Riewoldt, Prestia, Nankervis.
Crap quarter! :chuck
We are just undisciplined when it comes to doing the basics of the game especially defensively. Totally clueless about protecting the defensive side of contests. It doesn't help either when offensively we have more shots but kick 1.5 to 4.0.
-
Unbelievable the garbage frees they're getting and the holds we aren't being paid
The umps fitting the standard of the game. It's all garbage :help.
Larkey got two frees and goals from diving :thumbsdown. So much for the AFL saying earlier this year they were cracking down on it.
-
Bolts with the moves 25m out and snaps his 4th.

As great as he is Dusty is so unselfish. That was great to find Jack. Too bad Jack missed the shot.
-
All 8 teams are relieved they don’t have to face dusty in the finals. Imagine what could have been if the team extracted the digit
-
Who got subbed off?
Pickett. A "tactical" change according to the AFL website.
-
Final Score
Richmond 3.2 10.5 11.10 14.17-101
North Melb. 2.3 6.7 10.7 10.12-72

At least we won for Cotch and Jack :bow.

In all honesty, that was a pathetic game.if it wasn't for dusty and Bolton we would have been smashed.
Signs are not good for us

I wouldn't stress. They were doing enough to win but clearly not busting a gut.
Only a handful looked desperate to win for Jack and Cotch which as expected was Dusty of course, then Bolton and Soldo etc.
Real fizzer

Where's the goals from free kick stats bloody hell that Larkey got looked after.
I hope he's cited for staging.
They should implement actual suspensions for it because fines don't do anything.

We were 3 men down with Pickett being terrible and Jack/Cotch looking absolutely finished.
If we had played 3 other blokes we probably would have done better IMO especially if the season wasn't over.

Foxsports
21 August 2023
RICHMOND
The Tigers sent off Trent Cotchin and Jack Riewoldt in style, defeating a spirited North Melbourne side by kicking away in the final quarter. Finals are no longer on the agenda for Richmond but the side still put on a good show, with a seven-goal surge in the second quarter setting the stage for the win. There’s more interest now in what will come next rather than what will happen next week, but it was the perfect day for the club’s retiring champions.
In the votes
Dustin Martin turned it on for his premiership teammates’ farewell, finishing with a team-high 31 disposals to go with three goals. Shai Bolton also hit the scoreboard with four majors, while Toby Nankervis was huge in the ruck. Jacob Hopper and Tim Taranto had some good moments.
Room for improvement
They were beaten at centre clearance despite the Roos losing Luke Davies-Uniacke before the opening bounce. Accuracy in front of goal was also lacking, with the side finishing on 14.17. Ultimately though, it was a win for the Tigers in Cotchin and Riewoldt’s final game, which is all that matters.

POSITIVES & NEGATIVES FOR ROUND 23

The Positive: Superb send off for premiership stars
It was a great day at the MCG on Saturday.
The way that Richmond sent off premiership heroes Trent Cotchin and Jack Riewoldt was superb.
The era may now be over, but that was a great way to remember what they achieved in the yellow and black.
The Tigers also honoured retiring North Melbourne veteran Jack Ziebell in a respectful manner on what was a memorable day of celebration.
The Negative: Another key forward kicks a bag
Richmond’s defence has been an integral part of the way the team played throughout its successful era.
But in recent weeks, they’ve been towelled up as a collective by an opposition key forwards.
Nick Larkey kicked six goals at the MCG on Saturday, Max King did the same at Marvel Stadium a week earlier, Jamarra Ugle-Hagan returned five in Round 21, Harrison Petty bagged half a dozen in Round 20 and Mitch Lewis four before that.
The defence has now become an issue for the Tigers.
Noah Balta has had a decent season but appears to be worrying too much about attacking, Dylan Grimes is slowing down fast, Tylar Young is still very inexperienced and Nathan Broad has been down in recent weeks, while Nick Vlastuin is the exception having played fairly well.
The Tigers will get youngster Josh Gibcus back next year but how do they go about tightening up in defence?
A lot may rest on whoever their new coach is and how he decides to play given Andrew McQualter has looked to regularly be on the attack.

The win over the Kangaroos was all they could’ve asked for, and a fitting farewell for two of their all-time champions. But it’s kinda disappointing they couldn’t get Trent Cotchin to hold off his retirement for one more week so he could do one last coin toss, isn’t it?

Okay the celebrations are over and we did indeed see two greats out in a way they really deserved.
Now the reality coming into the next game. It was a poor effort by the team against a bottom of the ladder team with its share of injuries.
Imo only circumstance enabled us to send our two off the way they needed to be. Scary to think so many could be so poor in such a ikonic game if thats the right way to phrase it.
i can just see the reactions here if we had lost.
