Only 8 AFL-listed players is pretty thin. While retirements, injuries, suspensions and promotions gave us little choice this week, it's disappointing we couldn't put the interests of our VFL team playing in finals ahead of a dead rubber for the AFL team.

What could we have done? We need to field 23 players at AFL level. Cotch and Jack retired so they needed to be replaced. The 2 debutants were replaced at vfl level by those dropped from seniors. I think they took 1 extra player with them to Adelaide as backup, other than that it is what it is with retirements, injuries and suspensions.

I'm not disagreeing, TK. As I said, it gave the Club little choice this week given all the events that have happened over the past week. It's just disappointing that the failed season of our AFL team is now costing our VFL team in the finals. Of course, Sonsie's late last quarter stupidity was something that was avoidable and has cost him and us in the VFL finals as well.
-
I think the pies are similarly stretched at vfl with their injuries too?
-
Maybe this is a situation where what is in the best interests of the afl team does not align with what is in the best interests of the vfl team. Need to blood new players in the afl team pronto regardless if it is a dead rubber even though it has the effect of depriving the vfl side of its better players.

Spot on.

Agree
And let's be honest fundamentally our VFL side is there more for development of the Cubs coming through. Yes the wins are very important but so too is making sure when it bec0mes necessary (like today) they are ready to step into the AFL side.
Clearly our long injury list hasn’t helped either.
-
So true, finals will give them good experience similar to playing seniors. It will be interesting to see who stands up
-
We had the ball in our forward half for most of the first 5 mins but couldn't get a goal. Pies go forward once and get the first goal.
1 - 6
-
Wasting our inside 50s. We can't kick a goal :scream.

52 for us wouldn't get a game in the vafa
-
Pies two goals from just 4 inside 50s yet we haven't got one from 8 inside 50s.
3 - 12
-
Great we have a 204cm giant playing forward while a midget is in the ruck.
-
We're going too straight and back to where the Collingwood numbers are rather than switching play. Pies just feeding off us.
3 - 20
-
Said it last week
El Nour isn't VFL standard. :help :banghead
And just a comment on Lachlan Street. He alaways nominates for the AFL draft, commentators suggest he should be on an AFL list. His disposal is the reason he isn't, shocking. Beautiful kicking style but shocking execution
-
Morris is stuffen useless
-
Cut our losses with Bradtke.
He is useless
-
Cut our losses with Bradtke.
He is useless
IMHO there's alot to work with.
Wish they'd instruct him to lead more rather than this stupid crash packs and bring it to ground
-
Two leads from Cumberland. One up the ground and then back in the pocket. Goal! :gotigers

Sorry, my cousin rang and I had to take the call.
Current score: 42 - 47
Samson just sprays a shot for a point.

Samson makes up for it with a good tackle to cause the turnover. Gets to Pickett who puts us in front :gotigers

Coll 7.5-47

-
Melville intercepts on the wing. Goes to Lachie Johnson across to Street to Hugo 40 out. Sprays it right and no score (throw-in).
Good pressure forces the OOTF. Hugo's kick again goes right and no score :facepalm.
-
Half-time
Richmond 2.4 7.7-49
Coll'wood 4.4 7.5-47

Did well to come back from 23 pts down. Actually should be further in front as the ball spent the last 10 mins in our forward half.

Poor/mistackle in the middle and the Pies get the first of the 3rd.
49 - 53
-
Terrible defending to allow a mark like that to a long high ball.
49 - 59
-
We've come out asleep this quarter. Mids can't get their hands on the footy.
49 - 66
-
Thrown away this final in 15 mins. 7 Tigers haven't touched the ball this quarter.
49 - 78
-
Season over.
6 goals down and heads dropping all over the place.
-
This is soft! 8 goals straight to the Pies in less than 25 mins :thumbsdown.
-
It will be interesting to see where the VFL program goes after this season.
Needs a clean out also and a new coach.
-
Losing is better than paying out contracts. :lol
Morris is doing a fantastic job as are many of our assistants in the seniors.
-
Hugo the goals are between the two big posts :facepalm. About his 4th miss today.
Edit: Finally put one through with his 5th attempt.
Rich 8.9-57
Coll 15.7-97

3/4 time
Richmond 2.4 7.7 8.9-57
Coll'wood 4.4 7.5 16.7-103
Goals: Cumberland 2, Bradtke, Pickett, Ryan, Ralphsmith, McDonagh, Hicks.
Soft! Came out asleep after half-time and then just rolled over.
-
Hugo along with wing to Samson. Goes to Cumberland alone in the pocket. Shot just misses.
58 - 103
-
Cue in the rack since half-time :P.
58 - 115
-
Biggie did a torp from the kick-in and it came off. Most exciting thing from us this half.
-
Need a mercy rule. Junk time on steroids.
58 - 122
-
Our gameplan:
Get first hands on the ball but either fumble it or cough it up by hand.
Teammates just blindly run forward and don't protect the defensive side of the contest.
Opposition says thank you and runs into an open forward line for an easy goal.
Rinse and Repeat.
:P

Final Score
Richmond 2.4 7.7 8.9 8.12-60
Coll'wood 4.4 7.5 16.7 21.9-135
Goals: Cumberland 2, Bradtke, Pickett, Ryan, Ralphsmith, McDonagh, Hicks.
That second half was painful to watch :help.
Anyway, season over and so meekly :thumbsdown.

VFL Tigers’ season comes to an end at the hand of the Pies
By Brenton Mann
Richmond Media
27 August 2023
“One half of footy doesn’t define us.”
That was senior coach Steve Morris’ post-match message to a Richmond side that unfortunately couldn’t match it with their rivals in the second half, being overrun by 75 points.
The Tigers held their own in the first half, having the better of the second term, however 14-goals-to-one after half-time sealed their fate, the final score reading 21.9 (135) to 8.12 (60).
Richmond hosted Collingwood in the cut-throat VFL Wildcard Round, in their first meeting with the Pies for 2023.
Noah Cumberland nailed the Tigers' opening major, a timely goal as the Pies made the most of their opportunities and slotted the first four goals of the game.
The scoreboard didn’t truly reflect the nature in which the game was being played, as the Tigers swarmed the Magpies.
The final piece of the puzzle was scoreboard nourishment, and Angus Hicks’ right-foot snap gave his side back-to-back goals to end the quarter and dragged the deficit back to two goals.
Marlion Pickett’s last game at the level saw him leave Ikon Park with a 2019 premiership medallion and the Norm Goss medalist set the tone in the second term.
Pickett drove the ball deep inside 50 where Samson Ryan held his ground and marked strongly.
Ryan importantly finished off his work, lighting the yellow and black spark early in the quarter.
Collingwood answered back before Garrett McDonagh gathered the ball and squeezed through a snap over his right shoulder.
Kaelan Bradtke took full advantage of the broadcast game exposure, putting in a contender for goal of the year.
The burly big man streaked away from his opponent down the Punt Road wing, took a bounce and nailed a goal from the paint of 50.
The Magpies hit back soon after, edging clear by a goal.
Cumberland then put in his own nomination for goal of the year, dancing on a dollar in the forward pocket and sliding through a check side goal, his second.
The goal-for-goal continued, with Collingwood kicking its seventh before Pickett handed Richmond the lead after being spotted up inside 50 by Hicks.
The Tigers took at two-point lead into the main break and dominated the territory battle in the second quarter.
Collingwood flipped the script in the third quarter, rattling off four goals in the opening 13 minutes, regaining the lead by 23 points.
The Magpies quickly made it six goals in 19 minutes, as Richmond simply couldn’t get its hands on the ball.
Six turned into seven and seven into eight, as Collingwood made every post a winner.
Hugo Ralphsmith’s running long goal at the 31-minute mark was the Tigers’ first of the third term, and a much better result than his set-shot moments earlier.
However, Richmond’s sniff was swiftly snuffed, as Collingwood walked in its ninth goal of the term.
It was much of the same goal wise in the last quarter, as the Magpies built on their lead as the Tigers threw caution to the wind in a bid to swing the momentum in their favour.
Richmond fought tooth and nail; however, it was to no avail.

Dropped dual premiership player Marlion Pickett was one of Richmond's best in Sunday's wildcard clash, but he was unable to do anything to stop Collingwood running away to a 75-point win that ended the Tigers' season.
Pickett finished with 22 disposals, seven clearances, five tackles and a goal.
Noah Cumberland kicked two goals from 15 disposals, Samson Ryan slotted one from his 14 touches and 24 hitouts, and Kaelan Bradtke also kicked a goal.
Hugo Ralphsmith also registered a major from 20 disposals.
Other senior-listed Tigers in action included Ben Miller (11 disposals), Bigoa Nyuon (eight) and Matt Coulthard (eight).
