Ellie out for potentially another month with a crack in her fibula  :-\.

Richmond AFLW Injury List:

Unavailable

Jess Hosking, ankle (TBC)

Charley Ryan, foot (1-2 weeks)

Meagan Kiely, back (2 weeks)

Ellie McKenzie, ankle (2-4 weeks)

----------------------------------------

Jess Hosking, ankle

"During a contest in Saturday’s match against GWS, Jess left the ground with ankle soreness and did not return to the field. In further assessment during the week, it has been confirmed she has a moderate grade syndesmosis injury. We are working on her return to play plan in consultation with our doctor and assessing whether she will need surgery."

Ellie McKenzie, ankle

"Ellie has a small fracture on her fibula, which over the past few weeks we have carefully been assessing to see how it settles. Given her importance to our team, we wanted to give her every chance to get back as soon as possible. It is still monitored by pain at the moment, but we will be looking to ramp her training up in the next week, with the view to getting her back playing within 2-4 weeks."

Meagan Kiely, back

"Meagan is back training but still very much day to day for how her back presents. She is feeling good this week, so we are hoping she continues to progress in a way that we can expose her to more variables at training next week. Once we get a consistent week of training into her, we will know how she will present for exposure for match sim and then availability for selection. Hoping for a return in two weeks."

Charley Ryan, foot

"Charley is full training and we are really happy with how she is tracking. She has some final hurdles to tick off but we are hoping to make her available for selection in the next week or two."

Carlton v Richmond at Ikon Park, 1.05pm AEST

The Tigers have beaten Carlton just once, in their most recent meeting, and that win was set up by a 26-point opening quarter. Although the Blues won each subsequent quarter, they weren't able to totally mow down the lead, and this year's edition presents as a potential danger game for Richmond. Carlton is coming off a confidence-building victory against the Eagles, while the Tigers had to grind out a win in warm conditions, picking up some less-than-ideal injuries in the process. Richmond's heartbeat remains Monique Conti in the midfield, the star is averaging 8.3 clearances, generating plenty of drive out of the middle, so Carlton would do well to send emerging midfielder Keeley Sherar to play a defensive role on Conti to limit her output.

The ruck battle also presents as an intriguing sub-plot in this game. Breann Moody, who spent much of the opening fortnight playing forward before moving back into the ruck last week, has the ability to hurt you in the air and on the scoreboard. Gabby Seymour, meanwhile, doesn't necessarily dominate the hitouts but certainly forces her opponents to be accountable around the field. The ruck who best serves their midfield will have a big say in the end result.

Tip: Carlton will be full of vigour, but the Tigers will get over the line. Richmond by seven points.

Gresier long off HB to a 1-on-1 where Brennan wins the HTB. Goes long and Jones takes the 1-on-1 contested mark 25 out. Misses.

25 - 14

Conti off after copping a ball to the face.

Quarter time

Richmond    4.1-25
Carlton        2.2-14

Goals: Brennan 2, Yassir, MacDonald.

Good tackling pressure, we're winning the inside ball, and been good on transition which is giving us looks and we're taking them. Need to tighten up defensively though. Allowing the ball to get over and out the back and been fumbly in the D50 which has cost us the two goals.

Ferguson has got to get Kelly off. She can't get near the ball as a forward when it's kicked towards her and it's like playing a player down on the field. Gifts the ball back to Carlton every time.

That was woeful. Beaten up across the park especially on the outside. We're sloppy and can't move the ball forward as any system breaks down when you're effectively playing one down.

Carlton        2.2    4.3    5.3-33

Goals: Brennan 2, Yassir, MacDonald.

14 - 3 inside 50s that 3rd quarter but they were mostly aimless bombs to where Carlton had loaded up their defenders. Just clueless. Once it hits the ground we are outnumbered too. If we lose this today, it will be on coach Ferguson. Wrong team selection (playing one down with Kelly out there) and no system.

Carlton        2.2    4.3    5.3    6.4-40

Goals: Brennan 2, Greiser, Reid, Yassir, MacDonald, Jones.

Take the 4 pts and move on. Not great even though we dominated general play for virtually three of the four quarters. We'd get smashed if we dished up what we did today against the top sides.

Let's hope Gabby's injury isn't serious as we can't afford to lose her and be forced to play Kelly again :help.

Our top enders are very good but our depth falls away pretty quickly.

Brennan our best across the 4 qtrs for mine followed by Dempsey. Agree TK. Conti finally broke the tag in the last and was huge. That play in and our of defence by Sheerin was massive too at that point in the last quarter.

Not sure how we did it but solid win

We cannot continue to play Greiser and King together as 2 key forwards.

Want to give a shout to Stella Reid her final qtr was excellent.  One defensive effort in particular was simply brilliant.  Well done

And geez we missed Bec Miller

Tigers power home against Blues to notch yet another fightback win

Richmond powered home in the final quarter to notch its third win of the season.

CARLTON         2.2     4.3     5.3     6.4 (40)
RICHMOND      4.1     4.1     4.5     7.5 (47)

GOALS
Carlton: Moody 2, Austin 2, McKay, McWilliams
Richmond: Brennan 2, Macdonald, Yassir, Greiser, Reid, Jones

BEST
Carlton: Sherar, Peterson, McKay, Moody, Hill, Skepper
Richmond: Egan, Conti, Dempsey, Sheerin, Seymour

INJURIES
Carlton: Nil
Richmond: Seymour (lower leg)

LATE CHANGES
Carlton: Nil
Richmond: Bec Miller (finger), replaced in selected side by Jemima Woods

----------------------------------------------------------

RICHMOND has come from behind to secure its third fightback win this season, defeating Carlton by just seven points at Ikon Park.

But the 7.5 (47) to 6.4 (40) win may have come at a cost, with number one ruck Gab Seymour limping off in the final seconds of the game.

Caitlin Greiser pounced on a scrappy contest to snap truly eight minutes into the fourth term to take the lead, and Stella Reid followed two minutes later, the Tigers finally capitalising on some momentum.

After a lively start, Richmond was held scoreless in the second quarter, and to four points in a very scrappy third term as Carlton dialled up the pressure.

The Tigers pressed hard in that quarter, but looked unsettled in attack, struggling to find a clear path to goal and over-possessing the footy in an attempt to force a mark closer to the big sticks.

Carlton had its own period of over-handling the ball in the first half, but its tackling in the contest was first class, coughing up turnovers and capitalising on the scoreboard.

Richmond defensive general Bec Miller was a late withdrawal due to a finger injury, and Carlton took full advantage, keeping ruck Breann Moody (two goals) deep for large portions of the game.

It's been a hit and miss strategy this year, but with the Blues winning plenty of the footy across the middle of the game – Keeley Sherar (27 disposals), Mimi Hill (24) and Keeley Skepper (20) – it was one that paid off against the Tigers.

She was the beneficiary of a confused downfield free kick that took some time for the umpires to decide upon, but there were no questions about the resultant set shot goal, kicked from 45m on a sharp angle.

Theoretically, Richmond should have had too much speed and class on the outside, but were sucked into a contested footy game for the middle two quarters, a style which Carlton has proven to be its main strength this year.

The Blues had managed to overhaul a 16-point Tigers lead, jumping out to a seven-point advantage after Moody's second halfway in the third quarter, but were overrun as the game progressed.

Returning Carlton skipper Kerryn Peterson immediately added a layer of stability to Carlton's backline after missing the first three rounds with a knee injury, her pace proving too much at ground level for Tigers forwards Poppy Kelly and Caitlin Greiser in the first term.

Play was stopped after Amelia Velardo suffered a heavy knock in the second term, clashing heads with Jemima Woods, a lump immediately swelling up on her forehead.

She passed a concussion test and returned in the third term with a heavily bandaged head.

Mon Conti racked up another 30 touches, while Grace Egan provided plenty of grunt around the contest in a best-afield performance.

Skipper v skipper
Katie Brennan's first goal just bounced over the goal-line before returning into play, but those few millimetres were all that was needed, and her second sent alarm bells through the Carlton coach's box. Peterson was swung on to Brennan in a tighter defensive role, meaning a rare skipper v skipper battle. Brennan found life much harder, having to push high up the ground, a win for the intercepting Peterson. The Tiger got the early goals, but the Blue came away with the chocolates in their one-on-one battle.

Richmond tough it out, again
With fresh AFL men's coach Adem Yze in attendance, the Tigers showed they shouldn't be written off when down in matches this year, coming from behind in the second half to secure a win for the third time this season. Richmond overran Brisbane in the final quarter of round one, the Giants in the third term of round three and now Carlton in the last quarter of round four. They were truly outclassed by Adelaide in round two, but at 3-1, are in a good spot to push for finals again.

Up next
These two sides will be part of a double-header at Ikon Park on Friday as part of the Victorian public holiday on the AFL Grand Final eve. Richmond will host Fremantle at 1.05pm AEST, followed by Carlton playing Sydney at 4.05pm AEST.

Just further on playing Greier and King together

It doesn't work for a number of reasons

1/ King isn't a forward. The only real position she is suited for is ruck. And even there her lack of mobility especially below her knees means around the ground she struggles

2/ Greiser is improving each week. Once she starts clunking her marks it will be massive win for us. She should start each centre bounce in the goal square and be our deepest forward but when they play her and King forward together she gets shunted further up the ground. Which then exposes her lack of pace.

3/ because King isn't a natural forward she seems to get in the way of KB, who is still our best forward.

4/ I could go on

HeraldSun's match report

Ronny Lerner
HeraldSun
23 September 2023

Richmond is knocking on the door of the AFLW top four after edging out Carlton by seven points in a gripping arm wrestle at Princes Park on Saturday.

In an entertaining prelude to the venue hosting a live site for the men’s preliminary final, the Tigers made a ferocious start with four of the first five goals, including a pair to captain Katie Brennan, to lead by 16 points after just 14 minutes.

But Carlton abruptly put the brakes on Richmond’s scoring and kicked the next four goals to lead by seven points shortly after halftime.

Richmond was held goalless in the middle two periods, and had to wait almost three full quarters before finally kicking their fifth goal via Caitlin Greiser, who handed them back the lead early in the final term. Two more majors from Stella Reid and Courtney Jones sealed the 7.5 (47) to 6.4 (40) result.

Ultimately, the Tigers’ huge advantage in inside-50s (40-26) proved telling.

“The group is amazing,” Richmond coach Ryan Ferguson said of his team post-match.

“Their resilience for many years now is just growing and growing and growing. They were banged up last week, we were running on empty but still ran the game out really strong (against GWS).

“The group is just full of resilience and just such a strong resolve, and how they played that last quarter was a really professional effort.”

Richmond and the Blues headed into the match level on two wins apiece in eighth and ninth spots respectively, ensuring the game was an old-fashioned “eight-pointer”, and the Tigers came out on top to improve their record to 3-1.

The result saw Carlton miss a big chance to enter the top eight for the first time this year, and the Blues could drop to as low as 13th on the ladder by the end of the weekend.

SHERAR, CONTI DO BATTLE

Carlton’s Keeley Sherar was given the huge job of tagging Richmond superstar Mon Conti for the entirety of the match, and the pair had a gripping duel.

Sherar probably had the better of Conti in the first half, but the Tigers midfielder hit back after the main break to slightly edge her minder in the end.

Conti finished with a game-high 30 disposals (12 contested) as well as five tackles and five clearances. But Sherar was far from disgraced, recording a team-high 27 touches and laying five tackles herself.

“I thought Keeley played a good game,” Carlton coach Mathew Buck said post-game.

“She’s got great speed and tenacity at the ball, so I thought she was strong at the contest and got to the outside, but used her foot skills as well, which was great.

“She’s an exciting young player who’s got a great future.”

Conti also enjoyed sound support from Grace Egan, who racked up 28 possessions (16 contested), 10 tackles and seven clearances, while Brennan was superb with 18 disposals (10 contested) and two goals.

For the Blues, Mimi Hill had a huge impact with 24 possessions (10 contested) and seven tackles, and Abbie McKay had a great game with 19 touches and a goal.

Richmond’s Gabby Seymour (17 touches and 15 hitouts) had an enthralling battle in the ruck with Carlton’s Jess Good (18 and 27).

BLUES RECOVER

The Tigers led the tackle count 17-7 at one stage in the first term, and Carlton struggled to deal with the pressure.

But the Blues settled into the game and responded with the next three majors to lead by two points at halftime, after dominating the territory battle with nine of the first 10 inside-50s in the second term.

The Tigers were held scoreless in the second quarter, after their barnstorming start to the match, and the Blues continued to stifle them into the third period.

Richmond absolutely dominated the forward entries in the third stanza (17-3), but were extremely wasteful in front of goal, managing just four behinds.

Carlton’s besieged backline was given a reprieve by the Tigers’ inefficiency, but the dam walls finally burst in the final quarter and Richmond belatedly capitalised on their territory ascendancy.

“I thought we really controlled the third quarter but just got so rushed and so hectic, so we got no reward for effort, and that’s on us,” Ferguson said.

“So being able to reset at three-quarter time and just understand that the intent and pressure had to stay, but just ball in hand we had to use a bit of the outside run and lower the eyes and get it to advantage rather than that rushed kick long where they (Carlton) were waiting back for it.”

TIGER IN TROUBLE?

Richmond’s Jemima Woods could find herself in hot water with the MRO after a clash with Carlton’s Amelia Velardo in the second quarter.

Both players were competing for a loose ball on the wing, but in doing so, Woods’ shoulder barrelled into the side of Velardo’s head, leaving her grounded for a fair period of time, before being helped from the field by medical staff and assessed in the rooms.

While it looked like a genuine contest, with both players having their eyes on the ball, the league is extremely conscious of any contact with the head.

Velardo was able to resume her place in the game in the second half, albeit with a heavily bandaged head.

Ferugson said Seymour copped a knock to the shin in the same spot as two weeks ago. He hopes she'll be right to play next week.

Miller will got for scans on her finger to check if she is alright to play or not. Ferguson said he didn't want to risk her today without knowing how good/bad the finger is.

Great win for the girls.

Conti and Egan dominated all game. Dempsey I thought had an excellent game.

My favourite, Gabby Seymour fought hard all game against much bigger opponents and with less than zero help from waste of space Poppy Kelly (don't know why we persist)

Down back Sheerin and McClelland were fantastic.

Captain Brennan was incredible all game tough as nails.

I'm always grateful when we beat the cheats. Great weekend for me.

Hopefully we see McKenzie back soon.
