Thread.
I'm a sports nerd and did a bit of travelling recently through country towns which led me to searching local footy clubs on Wikipedia. It made me wonder - which nickname is used the most by Australian Rules clubs in Australia?
Qualifier - clubs that have a team in an open aged men's competition - in cases of multiple nicknames, only senior team used (ie. Port Adelaide - Power).
Excludes junior only, womens only clubs etc. as the data just isn't as complete.
My list includes 1539 clubs.
1. Tigers.
116 clubs. A massive 7.5% of all clubs.
Runaway leader, no doubt inspired by (and including) clubs like Richmond, Claremont & Glenelg.

2. Magpies.
88 clubs.
Clubs in every state & territory of Australia, led by the influence of Collingwood & Port Adelaide's original nickname.
3. Bulldogs.
84 clubs.
The dominant dog breed in the list - with the only others featuring in the list being Hounds, Bloodhounds and simply, Dogs.
4. Eagles.
79 clubs.
We have the West Coast Eagles these days but a lot of the other 78 pre-date the AFL side.
=5. Demons
=5. Lions
=5. Kangaroos/Roos/Kangas.
71 clubs each.
8. Saints. 65 clubs.
9. Hawks. 59 clubs.
10. Blues. 56 clubs.
11. Bombers. 52 clubs.
=12. Panthers. 36 clubs. The first nickname not used by an AFL club.
=12. Cats/Kats. 36 clubs. Yes, there are 3 clubs called the Kats.
14. Swans. 32 clubs.
15. Roosters. 24 clubs.
