THE TOP 20 DRAFT PICKS CURRENTLY ON THE LISTS OF ALL 18 CLUBS
BY SEN
22 November 2023
With the 2023 AFL Draft complete, we’ve taken a look at how all 18 clubs have picked in previous years.
Taking a microscope to the squads of each club, we’ve figured out how many top 20 picks are on every list ahead of the 2024 season.
While some players have been recruited onto lists via trade and free agency, it still offers an insight into how much top-end talent each club is working with.
Early picks aren’t always a guarantee for success, but there’s no doubt that most of the competition’s elite stars have already been identified as quality options by the time they’re drafted.
GWS Giants 19
Essendon 18
Gold Coast 17
North Melb. 16
Carlton 14
Melbourne 14
Brisbane 13
W.Bulldogs 13
Fremantle 12
Port Adel. 12
Sydney 12
Adelaide 11
St Kilda 10
Collingwood 9
Geelong 9
Richmond 9
Hawthorn 8
West Coast 7

Total top-20 picks: 9
Tim Taranto (Pick 2, 2016) ....... traded in
Dustin Martin (Pick 3, 2009)
Jacob Hopper (Pick 7, 2015) .... traded in
Dion Prestia (Pick 9, 2010) ...... traded in
Nick Vlaustin (Pick 9, 2012)
Josh Gibcus (Pick 9, 2021)
Tom Lynch (Pick 11, 2010) ...... traded in
Daniel Rioli (Pick 15, 2015)
Tom Brown (Pick 17, 2021)
The Tigers have done well bringing in quality talent from rivals, with four of their nine recruited to the club as big-name recruits.
The only issue with this group is that only Gibcus and Brown are yet to hit their respective primes. Seven were picked between 2009 and 2016.

So the bottom 5 teams are also the winners of 9 out of the last 11 flags, who woulda thunk it!
-
Flip side to that is in 2017 the start of success we had 16 in the top 20.
Even though a lot did not work out our best players came mostly thru the top part of the draft.
Its something we are ignoring we are hardly participating in drafts lately and when we do its been with late picks.

Sustained shitness can flip this
Would you like us to be rubbish and get draft capital
OR
Win a flag in 2017, 2019, 2020 and have very limited draft capital
It’s very hard to pick at the pointy end when winning flags , which you seem to forget
You are very critical of a period of sustained success .. would be nice if the dynasty lasted forever , but oddly, that’s not possible
What we need to do now is either challenge for a flag (doesn’t seem possible), or bottom right out and play kids and attack this upcoming draft with an absolute war chest
Which seems very possible
I think accumulating extra picks the way we did was brilliant .. I honestly thought you would have been all over that saying how exceptional it was to basically get an extra two third round picks for nothing , but not so much
I truly don’t think I’ve ever known a “glass half empty” man like yourself ..
