Richmond v Port Adelaide Preview
Andrew Slevison
SEN
21 March 2024
Richmond and Port Adelaide resume hostilities at the MCG this Sunday.
The Tigers were much, much better in Round 1, pushing Carlton all the way only to end up with a five-point loss.
The Power opened their account with a comfortable 50-point triumph over West Coast, just as expected. They didn’t really need to get out of second gear.
Port’s main damage-doers were of course captain Connor Rozee and Zak Butters who combined for 54 disposals, 25 score involvements, 11 inside 50s and three goals. Jason Horne-Francis chipped in with 20 touches, 12 score involvements, five inside 50s and two goals.
The Tigers midfielders will have their work cut out for them in trying to quell the influence of the aforementioned trio.
Adem Yze will be much more positive entering this than he was prior to the Blues clash, knowing that his Tigers side has the capacity to get their hands dirty and have a real crack.
Getting minutes into Dustin Martin and Tom Lynch was vital and that premiership pair will be relied upon to provide some attacking vibrancy.
They do need to fill some defensive holes, however, after the devastating knee injury suffered by Josh Gibcus and the concussion sustained by Tylar Young. It looks as though Ben Miller will be called on to hold down a defensive position.
New Power ruckman Ivan Soldo steps out for the first time against his old club and will go head-to-head with his former captain and premiership teammate Toby Nankervis. It’s a fascinating match-up.
Underneath the feet of that battle, the Power should have too much quality especially after Richmond’s Dion Prestia succumbed to another soft tissue injury, leaving a void around the ball.
Ken Hinkley’s Port are intent on remaining a top four team in 2024 and you get the feeling they’ll have enough in their arsenal to overcome a plucky Tigers outfit still striving to get their first win under Yze.
Furthermore, it’s Travis Boak’s 350th game and the Power have a fairly good record in Boak milestone matches, winning five of six.
Tip: Port Adelaide by 14 points.

The bastards better not cave in like a pack of cards not against that freakin mob.
-
Nankervis got the kid DeKoning Naismith got the mountain Witts.
So far both have been very good.
How the club can be thinking Ryan as second ruck atm is beyond me.
-
Horne Francis has been ruled out for Port Adelaide
-
Mykelti Lefua the Sub
-
Mykelti Lefua the Sub
That sucks. 1st gamer as sub should be banned
-
Lynch with the first of the game :gotigers.
-
Maurice late out
-
Lefau into the 22. Clarke now the sub.
-
:facepalm.
-
What other team does that crap.
-
Banks ballwatching on the wing at the centrebounce. Didn't go for the ball that was coming towards him. Gave Port an easy centre clearance. Lucky they missed the set shot.
-
Brainfades just killing us :facepalm.
-
Clear high tackle on Marlion. And they wonder why we complain about the umps ::).
-
3 free kicks in a row
For a goal
-
You are allowed to use your arms to hold your ground umps ::).
One rule for us and another for everyone else ::).
-
Dow held = no free ::).
-
That was a mark to Taranto not paid and then a clear one handed throw by Port not paid.
>:(
-
We look extremely disorganised and and uncoordinated. Lucky to not be down by 10 goals.
-
Complaining about umpire mistakes when our team skill level make the umpires mistakes look minuscule in comparison :rollin
-
So you can throw the ball up in the air and it's not a throw ::).
-
We look terrible.
Not manning up.
Pressure is poor.
Skills garbage.
Get ready for a fisting.
-
Dow is seriously so placid and soft. Seen enough of him big time
-
Complaining about umpire mistakes when our team skill level make the umpires mistakes look minuscule in comparison :rollin
Come off it Tigeritis. Our mistakes don't excuse umps ignoring blatant frees to us.

Come off it Tigeritis. Our mistakes don't excuse umps ignoring blatant frees to us.
No, but what we can control is the basic skill level of full time players that are paid handsomely to live our dreams. If I couldn't do the basic tasks in my job I wouldn't keep job for very long.
-
Tresize has done a couple of ok things.
Dow and Banks look timid.
-
Not stating the obvious here, but f when are we going to learn to tackle, stick tackles.. seriously we are the worst tackling team in the comp
-
If we could execute at a reasonable skill level and were actually having a decent go at it then by all means have a go at the umpires.
But when players have consistent difficulty to do the basics of the game by hand or foot even under no pressure then it's a waste of time complaining about how terrible the umpires are.
-
Gee I like Seth Campbell his 2nd and 3rd efforts are excellent
-
These umps :facepalm. Spoiling the game.
-
Goal to Marlion off the back of transition :gotigers.
Rich 4.6-30

Rich 7.8-50
Port 4.9-33
-
Brown has had some nice moments this quarter.
-
Wrong kick by Lefau. Had to go along the boundary.
-
Bit dumb from Lynch there too
-
Dumb footy with less than a minute to go and we give up a soft goal to them against the run of play.
-
Butters going at Dow coz he knows dow is weak, dow just looks at him like he’s hurt and offended. :help
-
Half-time
Richmond 3.2 7.8-50
Port Adel. 3.7 5.9-39
Goals: Bolton 2, Lynch, D.Rioli, Pickett, Balta, Mansell.
That late soft goal the only negative in dominant quarter by us.
-
Trezise has added some nice run. I’d like to see him and brown play the rest of the year. Any reason why broad should come straight back in ?

Yep, we need to get games into the cubs. Campbell, Brown and Trezise have had a very good game so far. Banks needs to lift on a wing.

-
Embarrassing start to the 2nd half.
Absolutely pathetic.
-
Can't lose your feet and go to ground.
-
Bruise free game by us today.
-
Embarrassing start to the 2nd half.
Absolutely pathetic.
Our pressure has dropped right off.
-
They are just continually running out the front of contests this quarter :banghead.
-
Play the kids FFS
-
Why do we do so many dumb frees and 50’s
-
Taranto from the boundary goal :gotigers
Understatement to say we needed it badly.
Rich 8.9-57
Port 9.9-63
-
Can we get Tigers front and bloody square?! :banghead.
-
They've got most of their goals this quarter rebounding out of front of the contest out of F50 :banghead.
-
Dow handballs straight to port. Seen enough of Dow
-
The wheels have completely fallen off here with some extra pressure.
-
This is soft. Dow what was that blind handpass?
-
That was 50 if the Port ones were.
Why handball it off Dow? You were within shooting distance.
-
With these umpires we have NO CHANCE
-
Ridiculous
-
Mansell goal :gotigers
Rich 9.10-64
Port 11.12-78
-
How many throws have these morons missed.. ffs

Nearest ump didn't pay that. Had the ump from 150m away to spot the obvious free to us.
-
Baker goal with 12 secs to go in the qtr :gotigers
71 - 84
Just hanging in there.
-
Centre clearance by Dan to Baker in 11 secs. Beats the siren. Goalllllllllllllllllllllll :gotigers

Port Adel. 3.7 5.9 12.12-84
Goals: Bolton 2, Baker 2, Mansell 2, Lynch, D.Rioli, Pickett, Balta, Taranto.
Soft crap quarter saved by two late goals to Bakes in the last 12 secs.
-
I've defended this kid so far this season, benefit of the doubt as they say
Not today, lost me with that not even half hearted effort in the 3rd, which resulted in an incredibly soft Port goal. Thomson Dow when you see the replay, you should be embarrassed
-
Time to sub the kiwi.
Like Brown’s ball use today.
Umps disgraceful.
-
Watch the hips Tiges :scream.
-
ARC screwing us again. Short touched that going by the replay.
-
How was that not reviewed and reversed
-
Fox was wrong. Clarke subbed on for Banks.
-
Clearly touched. Thank you umpires .. as I said no chance with these umpires
-
Shai Bolton shocking effort. Pickett shocking effort before that.
Changes must be made
-
That was soft Shai. Not the first Tiger in this second half to go to ground in the contest too easily.
-
Shai Bolton shocking effort. Pickett shocking effort before that.
Changes must be made
Yep. Shai, loved to showboat and play unaccountable footy.
-
The dumb footy we play is astounding
-
Port clearly the better side. We played tough yet dumb footy for 3 quarters. Much to like with the young guys. Much to hate with the same old crap from Bolton, Pickett, mcintosh
-
The ball goes outside the circle and the ump doesn't call it back.
-
Ross goal :gotigers
83 - 108
-
Frees: 12 - 20
-
Need to kick those Shai.
-
Just stupid, time to recruit players with brains and a high IQ . JUST HAVE TOO MANY WEAK STUPID PLAYERS
-
Have run out of legs in the second half. Both offensively (not spreading hard enough to run and create space) and defensively (no pressure).
-
Dusty 3 possessions in the second half
He’s almost as cooked as the Grimes/Prestia’s etc
-
Baker off the ruck contest and goal :gotigers.
91 - 116
-
What's to celebrate?
-
Lynch has played today as if he has missed the preseason.
-
Dusty on holidays in the second half.. Boltons second half poor. Campbell looks the goods, Ross played very well.. brown and banks improved as the game went on. Tresize showed he'll be a player. Time to wipe the season off and play the kids.
-
Final Score
Richmond 3.2 7.8 11.11 13.14-92
Port Adel. 3.7 5.9 12.12 18.14-122
Goals: Baker 3, Bolton 2, Mansell 2, Lynch, D.Rioli, Pickett, Balta, Taranto, Ross.
1 very good quarter with promising signs from some of the cubs, 2 quarters we scrounged out goals to stay in the contest on the scoreboard, and the last we were easily beaten. So 1 vs 3 quarters to Port. 5 goals was around the expected margin before start of the game even if we gave a yelp. We're going to have plenty of these types of results this year unfortunately.
-
The umps can sux my dik. Ruined a good game
-
Dusty on holidays in the second half.. Boltons second half poor. Campbell looks the goods, Ross played very well.. brown and banks improved as the game went on. Tresize showed he'll be a player. Time to wipe the season off and play the kids.
Banks was rubbish. He is too soft. We are stuffed next year if we lose Baker
-
Both Banks and Dow look timid to me.
Get Sonsie and McAuliffe in.
-
Tackling clearly still not priority under the new regime....and no doubt the usual flogs cheered at the late change ...but jeez today underlined how crucial MRJ's defensive pressure has been so far this year... :shh
-
Both Banks and Dow look timid to me.
Get Sonsie and McAuliffe in.
👍🏿👍🏿👍🏿
-
Both Banks and Dow look timid to me.
Get Sonsie and McAuliffe in.
Sonsie is the most timid of the lot.
-
I rarely criticise umpires but good god they were pathetic today
But our loss wasn't due to the umpires, poor decision making and poor skill execution killed us again at crucial times.

Report Card: Round 2
Will Faulkner, Ben Cotton, Catherine Healey, Jack Jovanovski
Fox Sports
March 25th, 2024
RICHMOND
Sure, the Tigers didn’t get the four points but they showed plenty of heart and fight to continue to come at Port Adelaide on Sunday. Richmond were undermanned across the ground but didn’t concede until the final term. Not even the Power’s seven-goal third term could break Richmond’s back as Liam Baker led the fight to close within just seven points at the final change. The Tigers had more contested ball (+7) and more hitouts, but just didn’t make the most of their possession - finishing -11 in inside 50s. The Tigers just didn’t have enough defenders to halt Port’s forward charge.
In the votes
Tim Taranto defied an early knock to finish the pick of Richmond’s midfield crop with 26 touches, four clearances and a goal. Toby Nankervis did everything he could in the middle with 24 hit-outs, six tackles and 17 touches against his former ruck partner Ivan Soldo. Liam Baker proved his usual inspiring best as he tried to lift the Tigers with 23 disposals and three goals.
Room for improvement
Richmond needed their experience to stand tall but Tom Lynch couldn’t get near it after kicking the opening goal. He went the rest of the match without another major and finished with just the seven touches. Lynch was the man to cough up a 50m penalty that resulted in a Zak Butters goal, and was involved in several scuffles throughout the match.

WHAT THEY GOT RIGHT AND WRONG: EACH CLUB’S WINS AND WOES FROM ROUND 2

What they got right
Inexperienced defenders filled the void
The Tigers have been hammered by injuries recently, particularly in defence.
Josh Gibcus (ACL) is out for the season, while Tylar Young (concussion) and Nathan Broad (calf) all came out of the team that narrowly lost to Carlton in Round 1.
In came Ben Miller, James Trezise and Tom Brown, plus a little bit of shuffling to fill the key position void.
They would give up 17 marks inside 50, but with the amount of quality ball that came in from Port’s dominant midfield, that’s a decent result.
It was a tough task against a very good Power side and they did a decent job, but the weight of numbers banked up and eventually told the story.
Remained in the contest
For the second week in a row, Adem Yze’s Tigers managed to keep themselves in the contest as a winning a chance at three-quarter time.
Liam Baker’s two goals late in the third term had them within striking distance at seven points down.
They had also led at half-time in a match they were expected to lose comfortably. In the end, that was somewhat the case as they went down by 30 points, but not before they gave the visitors an almighty scare.
They’ve been ok across the last two games, but they don’t want to let honourable losses start to creep in.
The beauty of Baker
Speaking of Baker, isn’t he a very good footballer.
He tends to be thrown around wherever he is needed and did just that again on Sunday.
Without Jacob Hopper and Dion Prestia in the side, Baker spent more time through the midfield, mixing his time as a high half-forward.
He was Richmond’s best player who finished with 23 touches, 12 score involvements, seven inside 50s, five clearances and three goals, having a massive impact for his side.
The Tiges would be keen to lock him away as soon as possible.
What they got wrong
More lapses
Richmond led by 11 points at the main break which could have been 17 if not for some ill-discipline from Tom Lynch.
He gave away a clumsy 50 which resulted in Zak Butters converting a simple shot at goal.
The Power would then pile on four goals in less than 10 minutes in the third term and seven for the quarter which would have looked worse if not for Baker’s two late replies.
That lapse in concentration reemerged in the fourth quarter when Port went bang, bang, bang, bang with another lot of four goals - this time in less than nine minutes.
They are two periods of play Yze would love to get back as it eventually cost them the game.
No midfield for Martin
Despite there being lots of talk about it during pre-season, Dustin Martin hasn’t spent too much in the midfield so far in 2024.
He attended just four centre bounces on the weekend which seems low considering Hopper and Prestia were missing.
Martin was solid in the first half with 13 touches before he was basically non-existent in the second half to finish with 16 for the game.
As the Power midfield of Zak Butters, Connor Rozee, Ollie Wines and Willem Drew started to get on top, a player of Martin’s experience and ilk might have been helpful in the middle.
His presence might have sparked something in the guts for the Tigers. It seems like an opportunity missed.
Poor outing from Lynch
Tom Lynch was never going to be running on top of the ground in his second match back after almost a year off with a foot injury.
But he was unequivocally beaten by Brandon Zerk-Thatcher on Sunday.
Lynch failed to take a mark and had just three kicks for a return of 1.1. He was comfortably handled in the air and was at times uncompetitive.
He needed to bring the ball to ground more often, especially given debutant Mykelti Lefau was trying to find his feet at the elite level up against Esava Ratugolea.
Hopefully for Tigers fans Lynch can return to somewhere near his best for next weekend’s clash with Sydney.

Banks was rubbish. He is too soft. We are stuffed next year if we lose Baker
I really like that Banks can chew of the really good good kick and make it work.
The truth is like a few others imo he just lacks the frame size and strength to properly compete at the level ATM.
hb or wing few disposals is a problem. May as well play Macca Ross or Pickett at least they can physically compete.
Bottom line is i don't think he is Physically ready for AFL. IM REALLY HOPING THIS CHANGES. He could be really damaging if he can get his hands on the ball and compete.
Just another who needs to be locked up at the abbatoir barbecue for a year with a whole heap of weights to push.
-
I’m not sure it’s purely a frame thing with him.
Some players are lightly built when they debut but you can tell they have the hardness required for afl level.
I don’t see that with Banks but prepared to give him more time.

All except 1 are picks outside top 20. Strike rate on draft picks falls away dramatically after top 15 picks.
-
When did sonsie become a flanker?
I know we were all disappointed he didn’t take the next step last season but he’s hardly the first player that’s had the old second season blues.
Let’s give him a proper go before we start labelling him as a dud.
