Richmond v Western Bulldogs Preview
Jaiden Sciberras
SEN
8 May 2024
Two teams desperate to find a win, headlining a double header on Saturday night.
With just one win between the two clubs in the last five weeks, desperate times are approaching for the two Melbourne sides.
The Bulldogs are looking up into the eight, already eight points behind the cut off following back-to-back losses against Fremantle and Hawthorn.
Looking over their list, the Dogs should not find themselves falling behind for too long. With Marcus Bontempelli displaying his talent week-in week-out, Tom Liberatore in career best form despite having no luck with concussion, and the likes of Bailey Dale, Tim English and Adam Treloar playing good footy, their ability should begin to get them over the line.
The Dogs lead the league in disposals and marks and sit fifth in the competition for goals per game, however their ability to defend as a unit has been poor. Over their weekend clash against Hawthorn, the Hawks were able to transition and find options in the forward half was too easy, and the Dogs’ inability to hold the lead late was disappointing.
Their clearance game, which has been their major game-winning factor in past years, has dropped to ninth in the competition.
If they want to be taken seriously in 2024, they will need to come out and make a statement over the lowly Tigers, and they can start in the centre of the park. Richmond sit dead last in clearances, averaging 27.8 per game, 5.5 behind Hawthorn in 17th.
As for the Tigers, it’s been far from a season to remember.
Winless since their Round 3 scalping over the Swans, 17th on the ladder with a hefty injury list heading into Round 9.
Richmond will be without the likes of Jacob Hopper (hamstring) for a few more weeks, while Tim Taranto (wrist), Jack Ross (foot) and Tom Lynch (hamstring) are looking to the latter stages of 2024 for their return.
However, it’s not all doom and gloom for the Tiges. Noah Balta, Dion Prestia and Jack Graham are all a test heading into this weekend, which could prove to be a game-changer.
There was not a whole lot you could take away from Richmond’s 54-point loss against Fremantle, aside from Mykelti Lefau looking entirely comfortable at AFL level. While relying on a first-year player is never ideal, Lefau will need to continue his strong form in the forward half in Lynch’s absence if the Tigers want any chance at a win in the coming weeks.
The Bulldogs won both clashes against the Tigers in 2023, and with the pressure mounting on the Dogs and Luke Beveridge, desperation could prove the difference on Saturday night.
Tip: Western Bulldogs by 38 points.

Tigers out to fix 'horrendous result' against Dogs
After being belted at clearances by Fremantle, Adem Yze plans to turn Richmond's stoppage numbers around
By AAP
10 May 2024
COACH Adem Yze says a "horrendous" aspect of Richmond's game faces a proverbial blowtorch against the Western Bulldogs.
Yze has pinpointed the Tigers' stoppage work as a glaring deficiency ahead of Saturday night's MCG encounter against the Dogs.
In last week's heavy loss to Fremantle, Richmond lost the clearances 16-36.
"The Dogs (last week) kicked 11 goals from stoppage, so you can see they're a really potent stoppage team," Yze said.
"And based on the fact that we had a horrendous result last week in that area of the game, the stuff that hopefully we implement this weekend is going to hold us in good stead against a quality stoppage team."
The Tigers enter the clash languishing in 17th spot on the ladder with one win and seven losses.
The 11th-placed Dogs (three wins, five defeats) have come under scrutiny this week which has surprised the Richmond coach.
"I don't see how they're under more pressure than us. They have won more games than us," Yze said.
The selection changes come as Yze ponders whether to deploy a tag on Bulldogs captain and playmaker Marcus Bontempelli.
"We will have about two or three levers to pull," he said.
"Whether we go with the team system and absorb in that way or whether we just try and shut him out, we will have that discussion.
"He's obviously a really important player, teams have tried to tag him before but it's really hard to do because he can go forward and throw you out a little bit.
"I am never going to say we're not going to tag, it does make it hard for a midfielder if you have to someone standing next to you all game."

Cumberland the sub
-
Don't see us winning but if we are to pull off an upset then we need to jump the Dogs at the start as other sides in other games have done this weekend. Put pressure on the Dogs and don't allow them to regain any confidence.
-
Soft so far. Witches hats. No defensive positioning or pressure whatsoever.
-
This is very ugly already
-
I was expecting to be fisted in the anus and so far it looks promising
-
Skills are absolutely appalling. Senior players too.
-
SHORT CAN F OFF
-
Dusty almost needs to be dropped or rested, dunno but doesn't show any intensity.
-
Bolton 2 x horrendous turnovers already
-
Miller on Ugle- Hagen :help
-
Terrible skills
-
Heading for a 100pt loss if this keeps up. Half asleep, lazy, sloppy and making every mistake in the book :help.
-
Dusty almost needs to be dropped or rested, dunno but doesn't show any intensity.
Been saying this for weeks. Hadn't deserved a spot. Been shocking all year . Lost everything that made him dusty. Skill, power, explosiveness, strength.. list it all. He's plain old RUSTY NOW
-
:help
-
We are lucky not to be 9 goals down!!!
-
We just aren't hunting in packs. If you see a pack breakdown there are nearly always more dogs inTV shot. Is that the plan or are we lazy or something else?
-
Impressed by Lefau at least he is competing
-
Quarter time
Richmond 0.1-1
W.Bulldogs 3.6-24
Lucky to be even this close. Apart from our last line, we've been a rabble. First thing to fix is the workrate or lack of from our mids and HFs.
-
Playing too loose. Bulldogs running off as they please with no pressure. Opening us up way too easy.. so much for Yze racing on we are going to be a team so hard to play against. Yze fooled us all
-
Impressed by Lefau at least he is competing
It's all our main stays letting us down bar Vlaustin.. Short, Prestia, Graham, nank, Pickett, DUSTY, BOLTON... they are the problem
-
Did anyone see the trampoline that Bont had down his shorts? The ball seemed to bounce back so quickly he must have had one.
-
Prestia out of the centre and Mansell marks 40 out. Goal! :gotigers
Rich 1.1-7
WB 3.6-24
-
I thought Vlastuin was good. Short not so much.
-
How’s everyone favourite Graham going ?
Haven’t watched a minute tonight as at a function
Is he still moving as fast as a “fridge”
Or is he showing new found speed after his week off ?
-
Banks playing in front wins the free. Misses a gettable one.
8 - 30
-
Graham is doing what fridges do. Darcy is killing us forward he has a mismatch in Vlastuin.
-
Training drill
-
Why is Floss on Darcy?
-
Maybe get someone taller on Darcy. Vlas too small.
-
Got lucky with that touch on the Garcia goal.
-
Why is Floss on Darcy?
That's a coaches decision. That's not Flossy
-
Embarrassing skills, Dusty no chase effort results in another entry and goal.
-
Was Flossy on Naughton then when Naughton kicked the goal?
-
What's this we're in our forward 50 for more than a minute? Nope it's out again
-
MRJ you beauty!!!
-
LOL. Can we butcher the ball any more!
Maurice goal :gotigers
Rich 2.2-14
WB 6.8.44
-
Lefau in the ruck.
-
Tylar Young a dud
Short goes to ground yet again. Goal them.
-
Is Short playing for the Bulldogs?
-
Short been caught lying down on the job.
-
Jayden Short, absolute joke :banghead
-
Short is such an amazing skillful strong player . My God he is so amazing. Never seen a braver player than him.
-
Are we witches hats? They are cutting us up like a warm knife through butter.
-
Thom Dow refuses to kick the football.
Just won't do it.
-
Missing targets 15m away, dropping chest marks and slipping over under no pressure says it all. It all starts with the basics and we are hopeless. You ask what do we do at training all week?
-
100 plus shallacking coming up.
We are either so bloody pathetic, or so brilliant at tanking.
I take pathetic
-
Graham is doing what fridges do.
Reckon the fridge here is doing a better job
Beers I’m having are icy cold
-
Missing targets 15m away, dropping chest marks and slipping over under no pressure says it all. It all starts with the basics and we are hopeless. You ask what do we do at training all week?
At training, the main focus is happiness. Making sure everyone is enjoying themselves and just really happy.
Yze won't last his contract, this isn't a happiness contest
-
Thank god the dogs can't kick straight or we'd be a chance to concede 200 pts
-
I'm embarrassed for Dusty out there.
Heart is not in it.
Good goal Balta, well done Ralphy
-
All the Ralph Smith knockers are silent. He and Lefaue are our only 2 players out there
-
Lefau is only one of the few Tigers out there that is able to contest even when out of position or outnumbered.
Balta goal :gotigers
Rich 3.3-21
WB 8.10-58
-
The dogs could easily be 14 or 15 goals now if they kicked straight.
-
Can't knock Ralph Smith.
If the tigers extend banks contract I will spew up
-
:facepalm
-
Are we wearing ice skates tonight? :banghead
-
LAY A TACKLE YOU LOSERS
-
They're just running straight at us assuming we will miss a tackle
-
Are our players playing without studs?
-
:facepalm
Yes clear he is not up to it.
-
What is with all the falling over from Richmond?
-
It's obvious d rioli is leaving and dusty. Playing like they dgaf.
Campbell showed promising signs his first few games . Been totally poo ever since
-
I restate we are not hunting in packs
-
You can always spot terrible Richmond sides when we allow opposition fringe recycled spuds to kick a bag of goals against us :facepalm.
-
This is the most pitiful display I’ve seen for many years. We don’t have direction, skill, desire, leadership, poise, where do I stop? We are being schooled by a mob who can’t stand their coach.
-
It's obvious d rioli is leaving and dusty. Playing like they dgaf.
Campbell showed promising signs his first few games . Been totally poo ever since
Obvious
Please give it a spell
-
LAY A TACKLE YOU LOSERS
They don't practice tackling, main focus at training is slipping over and happiness.
We've gone full circle, from the laughing stock in the AFL, to a powerhouse, and back to a laughing stock again.
How quickly things change .
This is embarrassing. Buck stops with the coach. Then the leaders..
Vlaustin is the only one that should remain.. but I bet he seeks a trade to Geelong now that he loves Torquay so much
-
No need to tank we won't win a game for the rest of the year.
-
They're just running straight at us assuming we will miss a tackle
Sadly it's not been an assumption. We've been like butter :help. Just another example of our crappiness at doing the basic stuff.
-
Losing is one thing but when you are sitting watching questioning effort then there is for me huge issues
-
It's obvious d rioli is leaving and dusty. Playing like they dgaf.
Campbell showed promising signs his first few games . Been totally poo ever since
Obvious

Our senior players should be embarrassed tonight.
-
Right now, Richmond are the easiest team to play against …
North will beat us if this keeps going and No.1 pick is a very good chance now …
-
I saw prestia fly in defense trying to spoil a mark in that quarter. Of course it failed but why the heck was prestia required to fly.
-
Senior players need a massive rocket 🚀 and some big selection statements need to be made, select players on effort. Dusty & Bolton be the first youd look at from tonight.
-
Right now, Richmond are the easiest team to play against …

Yze said we will be the most difficult team to play against, regardless the score..
Oops I forgot, I've been told to give it a spell.

Half-time
Richmond 0.1 3.2-20
W.Bulldogs 3.6 9.13-67
Tonight reminds me of the game against the Dogs in Dimma's first year. Dogs won by 72 pts but the scoreboard even then flattered us. The Dogs should have won that game by 20 goals.
https://afltables.com/afl/stats/games/2010/071420100404.html
Tonight is heading the same way :help. Uncompetitive aside from a couple of Tigers such as Floss and Lefau.

Reminding me a lot when Geelong played games with us at marvel. 157pts iirc . If the dogs kicked straight would be heading the same way

Reckon the spell comment is because you repeat yourself like Stewie and Brian Griffin’s son bangs his head against the wall
You have mentioned happiness at training about 80 times in the last fortnight
Dusty 120 times
Either you like the sound of your own voice , or have forgotten you’ve said it
I assume it’s the former, and hope it’s the latter .. if the latter , write yourself a note and shut the stuff up
-
What sort of boots do we use? Slipping all over the place 😰
-
What sort of boots do we use? Slipping all over the place 😰
Maybe the same high heels on the girls at Eurovision😁
-
Painful to watch :help. This is a training drill for the Dogs.
-
There is a serious lack of interest, effort and talent.
-
Dogs by 70. Is there a mercy rule?
-
Graham subbed out injured. If it's the same hammy then our own stupidity rushing him back.
-
Seriously why did Lefau give the free then. It was knocked out in the tackle.
-
What sort of boots do we use? Slipping all over the place 😰
Multiple brands
Players whichever brand they have a deal with
-
Wowee we got a free
-
And another, the umps trying to even it up, no dogs free in return.
-
To be fair - a flogging like this has been on the cards for a while .
-
Stretcher out for Banks. Out cold.
Just adds to a crap night.

They won't replay the Sam Banks knockout. Is it to protect the Dogs player English from suspension?

Not just crap
Totally embarrassing

Yes exactly why no replay?

This is all junk time, I don't see what our young players learn from this.

Going to be a looooooooooooooooooooong year :help.
-
Gee the senior boys look absolutely cooked. Vlastuin and Prestia the only senior core who played at least an average game. My god, playing in our forward line is the worst gig in footy. Adem has his work cut out.
-
Are we really this bad, or using injuries as a good excuse to mask professional tanking? I guess next year we will know
-
This will be Richmond’s 11th loss by six goals or more in the last 18 games. The 10th loss by 30 points or more in 14 games. The injuries are significant but the Tigers have been non competitive for a while now. What comes up must come down. Unless you are Geelong or Sydney #afl
That Richmond shouldn’t con itself that this will quickly turn around. They are in a fairly deep hole that getting a few back from injury won’t fix

Nine rounds in and it’s time to declare the Tigers have fallen off the proverbial cliff, as the cost of their to reboot come to the fore.

If Dusty wanted to go round again next season, based on current form, work ethic etc, what is his contract value? What is his role?
You don’t pay a guy for what he’s done in the past, he’s already been paid handsomely for those years.
-
If that is his general output these days, then he should retire IMO.
-
Rance is the only one of the big 4 who retired while on top without fans questioning if they had gone on one season too long .

Not for me. Jack was the other. Played descent football till the end. Lets not forget he played his final year without Lynch.
The issue was the club botched up the tall department drafting.

If he was to keep playing and stay I'd be playing him as a permanent forward. Like Leigh Matthews did in his last 4 or so years
As for salary I'd say no more that $500k and that's being pretty generous

I've been questioning Dustys form for months now. From last year. He cannot be selected because if his past. Facts are he is being carried to 300, and f the past, that's wrong.. he hasn't warranted selection all year. I've never ever seen him kick the ball so bad.
Anyway I hope he turns it around to shut as all up. But I doubt it, he is physically and mentally cooked

-
Still better than most of team ,
-
A combination of high end draft picks and good selections with those draft picks will hopefully mean we are not so dependent on senior players to win games.
-
I’ve got no problem with him playing on. We all thought he could be plonked at ff for the last few years of his career, but we are so bad with our injuries this year that when we have done that we haven’t been able to get the ball to him.
We also need to keep some experienced winners on the list. Prestia, grimes, Graham all likely to move on. Possibly throw broad and baker in with them too and all of a sudden we lose a lot of experience and winners. Who’s gonna help with the younger guys then, hopper who can’t even get on the park?

Agree Sim. Some of these calling for changes were wetting themselves over Hopper. As a reault they now want to get rid of everyone and be like North.
Due to Meehan's incompetence Dusty like Jack last year is one of our leading men, when in reality they shouldn't have been.
Grines, Macca Baker, Graham see you later, and the rest kick on. We need to make some FA plays here as the blues did with Newman, acres etc to offset the experience till the kids are ready.
We also may end up with no return on the gibcus investment. That was the draft hand we needed to nail and at this stage , with the exception of brown has been a massive flop.

I wish we were like North, in terms of rebuild they are years ahead of us, good young mids and one of the best KPF's going around + Scheezel

Yeah I'm worried Gibcus will never work out so far, which is a massive shame. Time will tell.
Brown a tick IMO.
Sonsie hard to say but I think he might make it.
No confidence in either Banks or Clarke.
So 5x top30 picks and it looks like we might get 1 player, possible 2, 3 max.
Shame we didn't trade up more with 28-30 and just take JVR. I'd have been happy with Gibcus, Brown and JVR...

I don't even terms of rebuild you can't have the cake and eat it all to. We're paying for our success to. There hand out club that keeps crying poor on and off field.

You got Gibcus now with a knee and Clarke to with a knee Brown doing well and Banks is improving that's no flop bit of bad luck.

I didn't say it was or wasnt bad luck, i said the draft is a flop at this stage and i am right.
You can dress it up add some nice sauce to it and word it out how you like. Clarke second reco in 4 years. Gibcus 2 full years out of the game. Is he injury prone? Time will tell but one thing is for sure we need him to be elite, or we may as well forget about that draft.
Brown is the only one at this stage that looks like a potential a grade. I have hopes for TS and Banks being good foot soldiers, although i feel the former has more upside.

North have finished 15th, 9th, 12th, 17th, 18th, 18th and 17th in the 7 years since they last played finals with another bottom 2 finish beckoning this season. If your wondering why they have elite young talent and we have a lack there of, compare our finishing position over that same period.
Safe to say the phrase ‘I wish we were like north’ should never be spoken lol

Unless you look forward to draft night?
-
Unless you want elite young talent in your side
-
Unless you want elite young talent in your side
People want elite young talent in their team so that they can contend not continue to suck.
Can garauntee you that if we go the next 5 years getting picks 1s and 2s + priority hand outs and we start 0-8, this place would be having a meltdown.
In any case, your saying north is years ahead of us, well they bloody well should be.

If I offered 3 premierships or 3 #1 draft picks, would anybody take the draft picks? :-\

cotch pick 2, dusty pick 3.
no flags without those 2 and that is a fact.
we need at the least 2/3 A grade talent that comes from those first few picks.
i personally dont think you need any more than 2 years near the bottom. Cats, swans to name 2 had how many top end picks? SFA if i recall. Even pies take out daicos and who else de goey?
pendlebury is nearly 40.
give us 3 top 10 picks in this draft and we are sorted. :cheers

I’ll take the flags thanks
-
I'd rather win a flag than a draft pick, but in reality you take the draft picks first & then you go for the cups. :gotigers
-
In reality one is a product of the other

Picks can be a risk, just because you get a pick in the top 5 means you get a good one, I’ve lost a little faith in our recruiters these days, and money ball, is not the full answer.
