Fremantle v Richmond Preview

Andrew Slevison
SEN
4 July 2024

Fresh off a one-point giant-killing win over pace setters Sydney, Fremantle hosts lowly Richmond at Optus Stadium on Saturday night.

The Dockers are in fairly good nick right now having won three of their last four ahead of their clash with a side they saw off by 54 points in Melbourne in Round 8.

Justin Longmuir’s side is 4-2-1 at Optus this season while the Tigers lost to the Eagles by 39 points the last time they were in Perth in Round 5, so the home comforts should suit Freo again.

But don’t expect a shoot-out as Freo v Tigers games in recent times have generally been low-scoring. The last five meetings have averaged a total match points of 120.

The Tigers are battling to find any consistency up forward and are yet to score above 100 this season. You’d think they would need to score at least 85 to put any scoreboard pressure on the Dockers and that is a threshold they’ve passed just once this year.

Freo currently sit third on the ladder and this is a great chance for them to establish themselves in the top four.

They’ve been criticised in the past for letting such opportunities slip but they should pass this test with flying colours.

Tip: Fremantle by 32 points.

Ah the only saving grace atm where we all get the chance to pick who should play.

This week out with all the underperformers yay. Whats that i here we won't have the numbers to pick a team Bugger!!!

How about this then.

Vlastuin - Miller - Bauer
Brown - Blight - Smith

Rioli - McAuliffe - Trezise
Nankervis - Taranto - Baker.

Campbell - Balta - Mansell
Bolton - Kossie - Gray

Hopper - Broad - Ralphsmith - Prestia

Im open to suggestions. Just no more Short Graham Dow and co enough is enough.

Richmond Tigers flag physical approach to handle Jye Amiss as possible WA match-up looms

Jackson Barrett
The West Australian
6 July 2024

Fremantle forward Jye Amiss can expect the same rough approach Richmond took against him earlier this season when they meet at Optus Stadium on Saturday night.

The Dockers’ win over the Tigers at the MCG in round eight triggered calls from coach Justin Longmuir for umpires to keep a closer eye on off-the-ball treatment of his young forward.

Entry into F50 = long bomb = turnover.

Fremantle  4.3    7.5-47

Goals: Bolton 2, Nankervis.

Just 3 goals in a half of footy from 25 inside 50s. Then add pretty much every Freo goal has come off our dumb basic skill turnovers. Totally clueless and embarrassing :facepalm.

Campbell is continually out of position running to the wrong places on the ground. If he just stuck to being front and square at the contest like a good small forward should, he would be in and influence the play more and get his hands on the pill in dangerous positions. Just another example of a Tigers player not doing the simple U12s stuff. Is it Campbell or the coaching staff telling him to run around like a lost dog?

The Tigers have conceded six unanswered goals eight times this season - ranked 17th in the competition defensively - and they did so once more in that first half after scoring the first two goals of the match.

I actually thought it showed a total disrespect to the opposition. One of the reason they were so bad was because for 3/4 of the 2nd qtr they didn't cope with the pressure.

Yes we are a very average side but for periods we were good. So by extension  we dragged Freo down to our level.

Fremantle    4.3    7.5   13.6-84

Goals: Bolton 4, Nankervis.

This is painful to watch  :help.

Exactly, a 50m penalty I thought is awarded if a player enters the protected area, only when you wear a yellow and black jumper apparently.

I was pretty proud of the effort until the last 10 minutes

But yet again a lack of discipline coupled with dumb footy and I'm gutted again

I get we are an average side but I hate sitting watching whether it be live or the TV and questioning effort. Yet again I'm questioning the effort

Plan Z: Hope the opposition makes a bad turnover while attacking and we can get out the back.

Blight subbed is an awful decision.

We are getting killed by Treacy.

Our small fwds have 5 touches between them. Cum 3 and Campbell 2.

Why are we taking a key back off lol

We have had some bad losses this year, but tonight I can’t find a single positive. All the young guys were shocking. McAuliffe out of his depth unfortunately. Older guys were bad too… can we end the season now ?

Since Round 13, the Tigers have scored from 11.8% of its centre bounce clearances, ranked 18th in the competition. They have scored from 30% of centre bounce clearances tonight, but only for a scoreline of 0.3 (3).

Since the win over the Swans, we've only passed 10 goals once (12 vs Adelaide which we won). Tonight's our fifth game where we've kicked just 6 goals. We also scored just 5 vs Dees. Hardly exciting stuff :sleep.

Edit: We reached 7 with Taranto's goal just before the siren.

GWS won just 1 game in 2013 (their 2nd year in the comp).

I think the last time we won just 2 games in a season was back in 1960 but there were only 18 rounds back then.

ps. Fox Footy just said this is the first time we've finished a round in 18th spot.

Dusty's 300th was our GF. And we somehow managed to play it the week before and not rock up.

Since then and I think for rest of year we will be awful. Almost similar feel to when Jade Rains was our captain and we were just counting down the wild till the end. I don't recall another season like that, except this one.

Directionless and lack of growth is hard to watch. It will come but allot of change is needed. Hard watch right now

The question for me what happens from here and end of year super important. Do we go back in the wilderness for another 37 years or we act like one of the big boys ?.

Our president needs to stand up basically not existent for me , while our CEO role is a super important. Not in favour of hiring within we made that mistake previously. The footy department needs to be held accountable to Livingstone and Blair lift their game to many poor decisions of late. Super important review for me.

Tigers competitive between the arcs, bang average elsewhere

Andrew Slevison
SEN
8 July 2024

Richmond played well early and in patches throughout the game, but ultimately weren’t good enough as has been the case for much of the season.

The Tigers were very competitive between the arcs, beating Freo at clearance (43-37) and for contested possessions (135-133).

However, they struggled inside both attacking and defensive 50 which is essentially where the game was won and lost.

Adem Yze’s side ended up with just 7.12 from 47 inside 50s which just isn’t going to win you many games of footy. They had just as many inside 50 marks (12) as the Dockers but were unable to test the home side with scoreboard pressure.

Down the other end, the Tigers allowed the Dockers too much time and space around forward 50 which resulted in Josh Treacy booting five and the likes of Michael Walters, Michael Frederick and Hayden Young contributing two each.

It felt like the Tigers scrapped and fought in the clinches but were broken up on the outside, at times making life easy for their opponents.

They currently hold Pick 1 in the 2024 draft though…
