Port Adelaide defender Ange Foley has taken a swipe at Richmond, saying the Tigers are scared of them ahead of their elimination final.
The Power may be featuring in their first finals campaign, but Foley is confident her team has the upper hand against the out-of-form Tigers.
Richmond heads to Alberton Oval on Sunday looking to end its three-game losing streak.

'Steady, stingy, relentless': The backyard gathering that galvanised Tigers' defence
It was a simple barbeque in a Hawthorn backyard, but that pre-season get-together set the tone for 2024 for the Tigers' defensive unit
By Sarah Black
afl.com.au
10 Nov 2024
A WELL-FUNCTIONING backline needs to be its own team within the wider squad.
And after a somewhat below-standard 2023, missing finals, the Richmond defensive unit thought it was time to set the tone for 2024 ahead of pre-season.
Full-back Libby Graham invited defensive stalwarts Bec Miller and Beth Lynch over to her place, along with recruit Jodie Hicks, draftee Issy Bacon, ruck-turned-defender Gab Seymour and youngsters Amelia Peck and Molly Eastman.
It was a simple barbeque in a Hawthorn backyard – Graham buying a fire-pit specially for the occasion – but it was quickly evident how well the squad was about to work together.
"Bec was setting up the fire, 'Hicksy' was setting up the barbeque. People just slotted into their roles as soon as they got to my house, I didn't have to do a thing," Graham said.
"That actually sums up the backline, everyone just started doing their thing."
Seymour was one of the instigators of the night, along with fellow veteran Miller.
"'Hicksy' left (off-season) training before Libby to get to Libby's place to get the roast going," she said with a laugh.
"Izzy brought the most distinguished cheeseboard you've ever seen for an 18-year-old. She brings that sophisticated and mature vibe.
"It was meant to be a social get-together, but we also went in with the intention of – it was something we recognised last year, that probably two seasons ago when we last made finals, it was off the back of a really steady, stingy, relentless backline.
"We felt like we came away from that a little bit last year, so I guess the conversation was about how can we get back to being that absolute unit. Rain, hail or shine, we know what we're going to get from it."
Hicks, Seymour and Bacon have come into the regular back six this year, in place of Kaitlyn Cox (ACL), Eilish Sheerin (inside mid), Maddie Shevlin (wing) and swing Laura McClelland (forward).
The different personnel and the wider team defence have had an impact under new backline coach Nathan Chapman, the Tigers conceding on average seven points fewer a game than last year.
They're also making shots more difficult to take, with the opposition accuracy dropping as forwards are forced into tougher spots when they do manage to take a mark.
CONCEDED 2023 2024
Points 37.9 30.6
Marks 41.8 35.4
Inside 50s 33.2 30.5
Marks inside 50 6.4 4.4
Contested marks 4.7 2.8
Opp goal accuracy 42.5 34.9
Opp goal efficiency 16.3 13.4
"We've got a good mix of over-thinkers and under-thinkers as well. People who like to keep it really simple, and people who like to really analyse. There are louder voices and there are quieter voices," Graham said.
"I reckon it's important to have that camaraderie to help alleviate the pressure. We forget it's such a high-pressure role, being a back, so the way you do that is you create a bit of lightness and you create the camaraderie to do that."
Graham's the anchor of the backline – watching from a vantage point at the ground or on the wide shot of the broadcast, she'll be the player on the last line of defence, the apex of the triangle from which everyone spreads.
"I absolutely love it. I absolutely froth it. I really love the responsibility. The way I feel about it is that I'm looking after everyone. But it's a good amount of pressure that I put on myself, that I want to play this role really well," she said.
"I literally cannot play that role unless everyone else is numbering off their players and playing their role. If we're killing exits earlier or whatever it is, I'm allowed to play that role. If we're not working well together, we can't generate a spare.
"It's not a big revelation, having this position, but I'm playing a very different game than before because of our backline."
Seymour was Richmond's primary (and slightly undersized) ruck for the Tigers' first five seasons, but after the recruitment of Montana McKinnon and emergence of Poppy Kelly, has played full-time in defence.
"I got the conversation in the off-season last year about expecting to spend more time in defence. Honestly, I've loved it. I love in the backline how we do operate as a unit, and Libby playing her role allows me to play my role," Seymour said.
"We haven't got a star player within the backline, but we all work together really well, and play to each other's strengths, which allows us to shine.
"I'm starting to find my feet with [the rebound], sometimes I'm like, 'argh, I've got the ball!', but that's been part of the development of our game as well, having that attack off half-back.
"I think one of Lib's greatest strengths is her voice, so having her in that anchor role and set up the ground plays into all of our favours. It gives me confidence to do my thing, which is generally to fly at the ball and impact aerially. Very glad to have that security blanket."
Richmond will come up against a rampaging Port Adelaide in Sunday's elimination final, the Tigers being the last side to beat the Power before they embarked on their current six-game winning streak.
"I just think back to this time last year and the disappointment of not making finals and having to finish up and have all your exit conversations," Seymour said.
"So there's a real excitement about being here, but the main thing we're focusing on is bringing our best against Port Adelaide, who have been an in-form team in the last couple of weeks. We're really looking forward with the challenge."

Port Adelaide's recent success can be partly attributed to its willingness to focus on different options in attack, rather than incessantly hit up Gemma Houghton regardless of how she's positioned.
"That's the biggest strength of ours, we feel like we're a really multi-faceted backline. We have talls (Graham, Seymour and Miller), we have smalls (Lynch, Hicks), we have speed (Bacon), we can match teams," Graham said.
"We've played every kind of forward line, is what it feels like, we've played different styles. We've come up against them before, so we know what we're up against.
"It feels like another week of rounds, there's excitement, but there's also this composure of we've been here before, and we know what this feels like. Just a calmness about it."

Tigers’ burning question: Can they limit costly mistakes in finals return?
The Tigers return to the finals after their straight-sets exit in 2022 — looking to win their first-ever AFLW final — but they will be entering a hostile Alberton as a fired-up Port Adelaide catapults from an exhilarating Week 10 win. Richmond committed a league-high 67 turnovers in last week’s loss to Hawthorn; a flaw it will look to rectify against a Power side that looks to own territory once it gains possession. Its Monique Conti-led engine room will look to match Port’s contested-focussed unit and generate scoring opportunities for a forward line spearheaded by Katie Brennan. The Tigers beat the Power by 11 points in their most recent meeting in Week 5.

Port Adelaide v Richmond Preview
Gemma Bastiani
afl.com.au
9 Nov 2024
Last time they met: Richmond 6.5 (41) defeated Port Adelaide 4.6 (30), week five, 2024
Richmond has returned to finals, after its straight sets exit of 2022 (S7), while Port Adelaide has not only reached its first finals series, but earned the home ground advantage in the process. Alberton will undoubtedly be rocking on Sunday afternoon, and will be treated to a tight, tense battle. Port Adelaide's style is about contested footy and surging forward quickly to gain territory. This quick movement from stoppage has the potential to unsettle the Tigers' strong, organised defensive line, by limiting the time they have to generate the spare in the hole behind the play they rely on. This will create the opportunity for the Power's forwards – particularly the unpredictable Gemma Houghton, and dangerous small Caitlin Wendland – to fight it out in one-on-ones.
Gemma Houghton celebrates her match-winning goal for Yartapuulti against GWS in week 10, 2024. Picture: AFL Photos
The Tigers, meanwhile, work hard to keep the ball in their front half by intercepting the footy and generating repeat inside 50s. This gives them the chance to get the ball in the hands of Katie Brennan, Caitlin Greiser, and Emelia Yassir in front of goal, who work well off one another. It is Richmond's contested marking that has really shone this year, and allowed it to maintain chains of possession, but Port Adelaide will be determined to force the contest to ground level, where it competes at its best.
Key matchup: Shineah Goody v Kate Dempsey
A likely byplay on the wing for the match, the slight but damaging Goody and Dempsey contest will certainly have a big say in the match. Both have proven their importance to their respective sides in terms of ball movement and transition, but even more crucial has been their intercepting and defensive ability. Both sit in the top five for average intercepts for their team, with their positioning a kick behind the play regularly seeing them interrupt opposition rebounding attempts, while they are also neat in gathering loose balls. In each playing their own game, they have the potential to swing momentum their side's way.
Tip:
In undoubtedly the hardest game to tip, the Tigers will nab their first finals win. Richmond by five points.

No left foot. Greiser still should have done better there on her right.
-
Well the umps are against us again as usual ::)
-
And if want to know why some of us are critical of the coach the first 5 mins here is why. No one front and square protecting the defensive side of contests and we are getting sliced open on the rebound.
-
Yassir free in the pocket. Over-cooks the shot and misses everything.
-
The umpires aren’t the problem. The inability to collect the ball off the ground and hit a target 15 metres are far bigger issues. They try hard tho.
Captain leads turnovers by foot by example
-
Over-use of the footy is killing us. Just dumb footy especially in finals.
Egan found Brennan inside 50 but she tried to offload it than just going for the shot. Another missed opportunity.

Deliberate paid against Port. Brennan in the pocket with the shot. Goal! :gotigers

We're not playing North though. Port have just as many ordinary players. We did beat them a month ago.
One team is playing finals style footy and we are not. We overuse the ball by hand and the way we set up especially our defensive positioning at contests and stoppages is a joke.

Half-time
Richmond 1.0 3.3-21

Goal: Brennan, Greiser, Yassir.
Had the better of that quarter especially the last 10 mins, but just as we look like getting ourselves back into the game, we give up a soft coast to coast goal with seconds to go because we don't protect the defensive side. Same old same old. Only the coach doesn't appear to see it.

THE GOOD.
Seymour and Miller were our best. Especially Miller. Rock solid in defence all game and worked her arse off.
Greiser provided a target and worked hard all game.
Yassir - was lively but she's also very frustrating to watch so I have mixed feeling about her.
Sheerin was our best on baller and tried her guts out all game.
Conti despite being heavily tagged got involved and worked herself into the game and tackled like her life depended on it.
Brennan was good until her injury. Lynch took some good marks and worked hard.
THE BAD
McKenzie - with all her talent we just don't see any of her talent consistently enough. She was great early and non existent in the second half. Really not good enough.
Dempsey - happened to play the worst game I've seen from her ever. :help
Shevlin - was really poor and got soundly beaten. Just couldn't find it all game. Was she injured?
Kelly - was good in the first but she was unable to keep that level.
Coaching staff - poor selection dropping McClelland for Graham. I think this coach needs to go
THE UGLY
Graham - just gets beaten too often and consistently makes poor decisions whilst she panics under pressure which is a terrible trait when in defence. Her performance was atrocious and she killed momentum.
Luke - gave away too many free kicks which were devastating to us.
Game plan is trash
Skills are deplorable and not to standard.
Fitness - we are not fit enough compared to the better teams.
Red time goals are a major issue.
-
Wasn’t able to catch the game but not surprised in the least about the result.
Soft as butter draw and only made finals by half a game and %. 4 games against top8 opposition yielded 1W-1D-2L. We had ‘making up the numbers’ written all over our faces.
List is very midfield/flanker heavy and too many glaring holes in key position department. Not to mention the flawed or lack of gameplan.

------------------------------------------------
Richmond's 2024 AFLW campaign has come to a close after a 24-point elimination final loss to Port Adelaide.
In front of a raucous Alberton Oval crowd, the Power now won their first AFLW final in their third season in the competition, their high-octane gameplay in the 11.6 (72) to 7.6 (48) result a bridge too far for the Tigers.
Lauren Arnell's side recorded its second-highest score in the process.
Gemma Houghton continued her winning ways from last week's sealer, kicking the opening goal in front of a heaving Port Adelaide grandstand, before delivering the final nail in Richmond's coffin with a sharp over-the-shoulder effort in the last term.
The nerves seemed to hit Richmond early, the players fumbling and miskicking disposals they would normally nail, while Port Adelaide thrived on the finals adrenaline, the surge game style catching the Tigers' defence out time and time again.
The Tigers converted their first through skipper Katie Brennan, who finished with two goals.
It looked as though Richmond had managed to scrape back a goal in the second term, until winger Ella Boag's hard running was rewarded with a major on the buzzer, finding space on the outside after the Tigers had controlled most of the quarter.
A Caitlin Greiser brace to open the second half temporarily made a game of it, but weight of numbers was far too strong Port Adelaide's way, the forward line working beautifully together to set each other up in space with short and sharp kicks.
Simply put, Port Adelaide had an answer (with interest) for everything Richmond threw at it, applying plenty of pressure and converting its opportunities.
Matilda Scholz had the better of a tough ruck battle with Poppy Kelly, most importantly recording a game-high eight clearances, while partner-in-crime Abbey Dowrick was the pick of a strong midfield, sending the ball forward time and time again.
Brennan's day finished 10 minutes early with a hamstring complaint.

Shevlin has not been right since she injured her ankle
Dempsey has struggled since she and her family got vilified by the keyboard cowards. So I'll cut her a fair bit of slack
McKenzie, agree exceptionally disappointing
Apologies for being incredulous but this answer kind of sounds like an excuse for poor performance.
In regards to Shevlin (who is one of our best players), if you're not 100% fit why did you play?
If you were fit then where were you?
In regards to Dempsey (also one of our consistently good players), it's an elimination final! Prove the "haters" wrong! And kick some arse!
Is there really any good enough excuse for our prime players not to perform on arguably our most important game of the year?

Both our wingers got absolutely soundly beaten.
Our lack of pace in the side generally is a huge issue.

As i said Shevlin hasn't been right since ahead hurt her ankle. My personal view is they brought her back to early, rather than giving her the time needed. So IMHO she carried an injury into the kast 3 weeks and it bit us and her big time.
As for Dempsey, easy to say prove the haters wrong. But much harder to do. I am not going to go into details as to what she copped. It was disgusting, and those who attacked her gutless. So I will continue to cut her some slack. Yes she had a poor game. But knowing the type of competitor she is I've no doubt she would have busted her gut yesterday. That's not an excuse, it's just a fact

Tigers rue errors
"I sense it was a good game of football, but when you're on the other end of it, your mind goes to everything you could have done better," Ferguson said.
"I thought we played some really important moments quite poorly, there were about four or five red-time goals late in quarters, when we had momentum, we'd cough up a goal that was preventable. We've just got to get better at seizing the moment.
"Definitely clearance-wise, the last 3-4 weeks, the opposition teams have been able to sweat on the ball and get out on us. We look really dangerous at times bursting out of stoppage, but we've got to get the balance better to be able to have a better territory game.
"We've put ourselves under too much pressure by conceding too many clearances.
"I still feel like it was a great game of footy, the ebbs and flows. We had great momentum at times, really looked in control, we looked dangerous, but there were moments of execution – we've just got execute the fundamentals better when we've got them on the ropes. The moments of the momentum of the game, they make a big difference, and if you can jump on them and take them, versus cough up a few at the wrong time, it can make a big difference."
Katie Brennan (hamstring) finished the game on the bench, while Poppy Kelly and Ellie McKenzie received running repairs in the final term.
"We probably did run into the ground a little bit. The last few weeks, we've had players really soldiering on and playing sore and getting up and doing the job. We didn't have the luxury of making sure we could rotate and rest our players, to the point where in the last quarter there was a bit of a casualty ward on the bench," Ferguson said.
"Skipper's hamstring wasn't looking great there, and we don't want to risk her long-term. She wanted to get back on, and we wanted to get her back on, but we couldn't be reckless with it.
"We had a few sick and sore bodies, some severe cramp out there. They ploughed on, they kept going and going, but they did run into the ground a little bit."
