JONTY FAULL

Position: Tall forward

Size: 195cm

Clubs: GWV Rebels/Redan

AFL player comparison: Charlie Curnow

There’s something special about this tall Rebel, who’s strong overhead and competitive, yet agile and clean below his knees for a player of his size. Faull bounced back brilliantly after a long lay-off to start the season with a back injury, kicking five goals from three games for Vic Country at national champs level. He was then a dominant force at Coates Talent League level, finishing the season with an impressive 27.16 — including nine goals across two finals for the Rebels — while averaging 13.0 disposals, 4.5 marks and 102 ranking points from 11 matches.

Think we went real early here with Armstrong and Shanahan on board but proven to be positive as we got Armstrong later and Shanahan still on board if we want him.

No. Armstrong had the numbers but Faull has the aggression clubs want from a KPF that rest that were left after Tauru lack in this draft with the possible exception of Gerryn who's more of a ruck  - club obviously agreed. :shh

Tigers welcome Jonty Faull

Richmond has selected GWV Rebels tall forward, Jonty Faull with its fourth selection, No. 14 overall at tonight’s Telstra AFL Draft.

Faull, a tall forward who is agile and strong overhead helped propel the Rebels into the Coates Talent League Grand Final with bags of four and five goals in the Qualifying and Preliminary Finals this year.

He finished the campaign with 27 goals from 11 games and an average of 13 disposals and 4.5 marks per game.

Faull also booted 20 majors and averaged 13 touches across 12 matches last year as a bottom-aged key position player.

The 195cm product from Ballarat Football League club, Redan, also impressed with his aerial ability when playing representative football for Vic Country.

Faull booted five goals from the three National Championships matches and four score involvements per game.

Richmond Recruiting Officer, Sam Cousens said that Faull was a competitive key forward who attacked contests with vigour, adding that he followed up with strong intent at ground level.

“Jonty is a blue-collar footballer who thrives in physical contests,” he said.

“He had an injury interrupted start to the season but did not miss a beat when he resumed playing, and he was able to hit the scoreboard in all his games for Vic Country, including three against the Allies.

“We are excited to add Jonty to our list and we welcome him and his family to Tigerland.”

They must really rate him ahead of the other kps then as they had Armstrong, Shanahan and the Whitlocks all available at their first pick and opted to take Dattoli. All bar Armstrong were available at their next pick too and they went with a bolter in Bowman. Find it hard to believe they would have taken Faull when they passed on all the other kps with their first 2 picks.

Faull a unique tall forward

Jonty Faull’s combative playing style is what sets him apart as a young key forward and enhances his prospects of succeeding at the game’s highest level.

That’s leading junior football coach David Loader’s assessment of Richmond’s fourth pick (No. 14 overall) in the AFL national draft.

Loader, who coached Faull at Coates Talent League club Greater Western Victoria Rebels, is a big fan of the way the talented, tall teenager goes about his football up forward.

“Jonty’s a contested-ball key forward who plays with real energy and with real aggression,” Loader said.

“There’s quite a few talls around, but none that really play like Jonty does.

“He’s a stand-and-deliver forward with great athletic traits.”

Faull acknowledged that he thrives on the cut-and-thrust of the on-field battle.

“Certainly, my competitiveness is my big strength,” Faull said on RSN.

“I’m just willing to go for the ball.

“I don’t really care who’s in my way or who’s around it.

“I’ll just go in and dive hard at it. Even if it’s in the air as well.

“I just crash packs and what not.”

Yze's tiger cub watch - Jonty Faull

“We’re holding him back a little bit because the kid is a competitor. He wants to hit bodies and that’s the reason why he went so high (in the national draft) . . . other teams rated him really high. He’s in a good spot, almost full training now. He’ll most likely be available Round 3 or 4 of the AFL program. We need to get him into the program, start feeling bodies. As I said, if there’s a pack there, he’ll try and crash every single one of them. He’s a great kid, and he’s a sponge as well . . .”

Speaking to the media on Saturday, Yze gave an insight into the key forward’s game and what fans can expect to see from him against the Dockers.

“He’s a competitive kid. He loves the contest, can kick a goal from anywhere within 60 and he is a great teammate,” Yze said.

“He warranted his selection, we are not rushing him in, he would have been in the team even if Harry didn’t hurt himself at training.

“He is ready to play, he’ll compete and hopefully hits the scoreboard. He is a beauty.”

All Faull mainly needs to do today is what he has done so far in the ressies - repeatedly present, contest and at least bring the ball to ground. That's why he got his promotion and debut today. All the best to him.

Really loving what Jonty is bringing to the team, love his attack on the ball & his presence.  He has that mongrel streak in him & I love that in the big forwards.

He needs to stay in the team & have that breakout game where he clunks a few big marks & kicks a few, the Sydney Swines look like a potential victim!
A rest is coming, but I'd like to see Jonty push through it for a bit longer.

Don't worry about the nervy set shots Jonty, just clunk a few in the goalsquare!

Yeah his goal kicking needs work but he's hardly John Butcher - Richo missed sitters his entire career and I wouldn't want Tom Lynch kicking for my life either. They still went/go alright - and unlike them, Faull won't be required to be the focal point for most of his career, it'll be more like the few years when Richo had Ottens & Tom had Jack except he'll have two partners in crime in Sims & Armstrong. :shh

Jonty kicked 27 goals from 11 games in the U18s Coates League last year (3 or more goals six times). He also kicked 5 goals from 3 games in the U18s Champs (3 goals vs Allies). I can't find how many behinds he kicked in those matches.

I liked Jonty's game last night. Competed to at least bring the ball down in marking contests, kicked 2 goals himself, and had another 3 goal assists. For a teenager in his first year of AFL having to carry the main key forward duties in Lynch's absence, he's exceeded expectations this year. Jonty at least deserves to be the rising star nominee this week.

In the 14 appearances Faull has played at senior level with Richmond this season, he has kicked eight goals (8.16), with four of those goals coming during the past three games.

Among AFL Rising Star contenders, he is ranked second for marks inside 50 and fourth for contested marks.

It’s Faull’s fiercely competitive nature on the field and his exemplary work ethic that sets him apart from many other young key forwards in the competition.

Jonty Faull
(Pick 14)

The Vic Country and GWV Rebels key forward has quickly made his presence felt at AFL level.

Faull debuted in Gather Round against Fremantle and has been building each week, taking strong marks and kicking big goals.

His aerial presence and competitiveness is undeniable.

Richmond’s head of development, Sam Lonergan’s lowdown

What stands out? He's your traditional, old school, physical forward. He's going to crunch packs and there's going to be people conscious of that if they're sitting in the hole. He's a very aggressive, aerial, marking, power forward.

What’s he like? He is very relaxed, very laid back. Sometimes you’ve got to just tap him on the shoulder to make sure he's still concentrating in meetings. In saying that, he's a very intelligent football brain, a high IQ from a football perspective, thinks about the game, understands patterns within. He doesn't need to be coached too much. ‘Just tell me what I need to know, tell me how it is’, no bells and whistles.

Where will he play? He’ll be a key forward. An aerobic player who demands the ball inside 50, ‘kick it to me, I’m going to take this mark’. He’s got a strong sense of belief in and around that ability as well.

Yze provides Faull update

Richmond coach Adem Yze has provided an update on young forward Jonty Faull, who suffered a knee injury in the Round 21 clash with Gold Coast.

Faull was subbed out of Saturday’s game early in the first quarter.

“It looks like he has tweaked his medial. That’s going to end his season,” Yze said.

"It's nothing too sinister...it looks like he's escaped an ACL.

“He was in good form, and it would have been nice for him to finish off the season.”

Really rate his 1st season, probably pick of the new crop for performance in his role during the year, particularly as he has had no assistance from the highest paid 'leader' of the forward line.

Looking at you Lynch.

Carry on. Every game Lynch plays he gets the best defender and a loose man in front of him. That gives Jonty and any other tall a lesser defender.

His return will be welcome for all our young talls

Can you both be right?  I think we have the beginnings of our new generation of key forwards - the reality is that THEY need an experienced, physical body to protect them from oppo gorillas.
