HARRY ARMSTRONG
Position: Tall forward
Size: 193cm
Clubs: Sandringham Dragons/Ormond
AFL player comparison: Jeremy Cameron
Armstrong has come with a rush in 2024, with AFL clubs quickly falling in love with the gun goalkicker. Despite playing just three games for Vic Metro, Armstrong kicked an equal champs-high nine goals — including five in the final against Vic Country — as he showed off his accurate and penetrating left-foot kick, competitiveness in the air and mobility around the ground. Armstrong then took that form back to the Dragons, kicking five four-goal hauls in his final eight matches to finish with 27.10 for the Coates Talent League season. He’s also been dominant at APS level under Matthew Lloyd for Haileybury College across the past two years, including kicking 10 of his side’s 22 goals in a game earlier in the year.

Agree, we have now nailed this draft.
-
That ought to make a few happy. He’s the shock of this draft imo.
Thought he was too 10 potential.. maybe didn’t interview well? Now we have 3 keys in Fau, Trainor and Armstrong. Add Smillie to that too basically.
We’ve covered most bases so far
-
Just said he wanted to come to Richmond :thumbsup.
-
Thought there was no way we would get Trainor, Armstrong and Faull whilst also getting Lalor and Smillie. Hittin was a wild card but I like the pick. Absolutely crazy draft haul.

Can’t believe he slid so far

Crazy he slid so far. He kicked ~70 goals this year. Our replacement for Jack.
Only explanation for the slide is the clubs between our two batches of picks (12,14 -> 21,23) weren't in need of key forwards. Taking Faull & Hotton early would've thrown other clubs too.
-
Whether it was luck or genius. Wonderful result.
-
More excited than I would've been if we hadn't picked Faull as well - contrasting styles should complement each other well. :shh

Richmond selects Harry Armstrong

Richmond has selected tall forward Harry Armstrong with selection No. 23 overall at tonight’s Telstra AFL Draft.
Armstrong is a highly rated 195cm forward from Sandringham Dragons and Victoria Metro via Ormond.
The left-footer played a starring role at all levels of football this year, booting 60 majors across 19 games.
Armstrong was prolific through the National Championships, booting nine goals across three games, which included a five-goal haul against Vic Country in the title deciding match, cementing his place in the U/18 All Australian team.
The 18-year-old was also selected in this year’s Coates Talent League team of the year and was seventh in the National Combines agility testing, an outstanding result for a player of his height.
Armstrong kicked four goal hauls in five of his 10 matches for the Dragons this season, including in the Grand Final win against GWV Rebels.
Richmond Recruiting Officer, Sam Cousens said that Armstrong had hit the ground running in 2024 after he missed portions of 2023 through injury.
“Harry is a dynamic player with terrific aerial power,” he added.
“He is a reliable set shot and is a player who has kicked goals everywhere he has played, particularly at Haileybury but also for Sandringham and Vic Metro.
“His hands are elite, and he has stood out to us with his ability to be a dominant forward with his presence, all year. We view Harry as a player with significant upside and we are excited to welcome him and his family to Tigerland.”
Armstrong’s long kicking, burst of speed and strong hands make him a player that can excite the Tiger Army for many years to come.
The key forward will join his Sandringham Dragons teammates Taj Hotton and Luke Trainor at the Club next year, who were selected earlier at pick No. 12 and 21, respectively.

Why Lloyd’s just wild about Harry
Harry Armstrong has the most important attribute of all for a key forward – he’s a deadeye kick for goal.
That, however, wasn’t always the case for Armstrong.
AFL goalkicking great Matthew Lloyd, who coached Armstrong at Haileybury College, revealed how the talented teenager turned around his fortunes in front of goal.
“I felt he had a high ball drop, and his run-up was a bit too long,” Lloyd told AFL.com.au.
“We just streamlined his run into goal. He had a bit of an arc as well, so we just straightened him up and got his momentum coming through the ball. He worked hard on lowering his ball drop from hand to foot, just to limit the errors.
“To his credit, we’ve had chats, and I did a lot with him as a Year 10. But he has gone away and done that much work on it himself. Pre-training and post-training, he's as good as what I've seen of someone taking it upon themselves to work hard at it.
“He's gone from being a five out of 10, to a seven or an eight out of 10. It's a huge jump. His accuracy has gone from 50 per cent to 75 per cent. That’s what I've seen from the change in him.”
Lloyd pinpointed another valuable quality that Armstrong possesses in his football armoury.
“I believe that he has the ability to be what I call a tenpin bowler. He takes down everyone with him and flies for his marks,” Lloyd said.
“He takes marks that no one else will take, from what I've seen. He'll lead and re-lead, then when he's ready to launch he'll either get it, because he's got a metre on his opponent because of the work he's done off the ball, or he'll just drive his knees through and bring everyone down with him for the crumbers.”
Lloyd also identified a further key Armstrong trait – he thrives in big-occasion matches.
Armstrong kicked five goals (from five shots) in Vic Metro’s thrilling win against Vic Country in the under-18 national championships decider, and four goals for Sandringham Dragons in their Coates Talent League grand final victory over the Greater Western Victoria Rebels.
“It’s what he's given Haileybury for three years,” Lloyd said.
"I was ecstatic for him that he was able to do it on the biggest stage of all for a junior footballer. To stand up against the best opposition, that’s where you want to show and prove yourself.
“I was just really pleased that he could be the best forward on the ground and in the best couple of players on the ground . . .
“We've seen him do it since he was 15 when he first joined us. But obviously he's developed a lot in that time.
“A confident Harry Armstrong is a tough, tough proposition for the opposition to handle.”

Grain of salt this.
Lloyd just HAD to tell us he improved his kicking for goal. Couldn't say he's a great set shot, he HAD to say he wasn't before he coached him and now he is.
Get in the bin Lloyd a long with your embarrassing club. Leave our draft picks name out ya flaming mouth Will Smith style.

lol at the anti Lloyd sentiment. Guy was a champion full forward and a dead eyed idiot who played for a sh#t club.
Get Lloyd down to Punt Rd.
There’s plenty there to work with. Our new boys Tom Simms first in line

Herald Sun is reporting that H.Armstrong has bolted into contention for R1 selection.
Armstrong trained in the ‘probables’ side for match sim today and has done for the last few sessions.
Hopefully he finishes off pre season well and earns that well-deserved R1 spot!

Yze's tiger cub watch - Harry Armstrong
“Harry’s growing into his body. His body shape has changed already, and he’s only been at the Club three months. He’ll get an opportunity early, based on the fact we are young in our front end and he hasn’t missed a beat. We won’t throw any of our young boys out there if they’re not ready. But we looked at some vision from the game against Collingwood and we highlighted some of the things he did without the ball and some of the contests . . . What we do value is the contest he’s providing. Our ‘smalls’ will get to work underneath him. And there’ll be days when they (marks) do start to stick . . . He’s a good finisher, too.”

Compare his ticker to big Samson
-
I have a distant connection to this kid.
Is hard as. We will love him.
-
Didn't get a lot of ball but gee I loved his attack and got straight up after that hit. Beautiful pass late in the game too.
I reckon we have another player.
-
His attack was fantastic and that’s all you can ask for from a young key fwd
-
Some great signs already, got to a lot of contests and nearly clunked several contested marks. They’ll start sticking with time.
-
Harry will be such a gun. I tipped him to go Dees at Pick 6. We have a steal here.
-
Great last Q from big H.

One small step for Richmond
Putting team statistics aside, it's all about the future at Punt Road this year. Round one saw exciting games from Sam Lalor and Luke Trainor, but this week was Harry Armstrong's time to shine. The 18-year-old key forward lifted as the game progressed on Saturday, kicking his first AFL goal in the final term and then following it with a second. The Tigers' incredibly young forward line was understandably overwhelmed and will welcome Tom Lynch back with open arms next round, but Armstrong showed he is prepared to become the man when Lynch's time is done.

Is that the injured hammy? That’s a hell of an extension 1 week after what they’ve told us is a 12 week injury.
-
“Harry Armstrong will play VFL footy next week, he’s training really well, he’ll finish off another week of training this week and be available for the following week." - Yze

Was probably ready 4 weeks ago. But we're being cautious
-
I remember a time as we tried to finish 9th and particularly at the end of the season trying to win games that other clubs were playing their 2’s , ruined a few players careers ,
I’m happy for the club to be conservative particularly when there no great value to play them until they are close to 100%

Harry Armstrong
(Pick 23)
Armstrong debuted in Round 1 against Carlton before kicking multiple goals in two games (against Port Adelaide and Brisbane).
The mobile key forward was an All-Australian for Vic Metro last year and impressed for the Sandringham Dragons.
Armstrong is working his way back to full fitness after a hamstring tendon injury suffered in April and is close to a return.
Richmond’s head of development, Sam Lonergan’s lowdown
What stands out? His greatest strength is that he’s very strong in the air. He’s a left footer, moves and runs and looks fairly balanced across the field, and a very strong competitor. That collision in the Carlton match with Ollie Hollands stands out. A bone-crunching moment and both players jumped straight back up. Very resilient.
What’s he like? He’s quiet. He's always smiling. I very rarely see him unhappy or flat. He has a strong sense of his football ability. There's some real confidence there, which is not uncommon when you see high draft picks coming through. People enjoy being around him because he makes the space, the energy he gives is good. He’s very humble and has a great sense of gratitude.
Where will he play? He's obviously a key forward, but he's got this ability to get up the ground and then get back and beat you. You could play three key forwards with Harry being the third key because he can get up the ground a bit more and fulfill some other roles as well.
