As a bit of fun, have a guess at what guernsey numbers our new draftees will get?

Lalor
Smillie
Hotton
Faull
Trainor
Armstrong
Sims
Alger

Tigers debate jumper tradition as No.1 eyes No.4

Richmond could resist the temptation to hand its new draftees the jumper numbers of triple premiership champions Dustin Martin,...

I think there maybe a few existing blokes who will get lower numbers, actually know of one   ;D

So need to factor that in too

Adem Yze says Tigers tossing up whether to give the draft stars the historic early numbers or make them earn their stripes like Dusty, who started with No.36 for a year. 4, 8 and 9 available plus the numbers of Captain Blood, Ian Stewart and Kevin Bartlett

But who will wear the iconic 50 that’s now vacant? Speaking of numbers the story of Jake king asking for the 7 vacated by Nathan brown and being told he wasn’t a good enough player to be in the 7 is absolute gold

Dusty’s number 4 guernsey at @Richmond_FC is set to remain vacant in 2025. The club has essentially decided to retire it for a year.

2025 Richmond guernsey numbers

Richmond’s first pick in the 2024 Telstra AFL Draft, Sam Lalor, will wear No. 22 in his debut AFL season.

Lalor is the second consecutive Richmond No. 1 draft pick to debut in the number 22, after AFLW star Ellie McKenzie also donned it for the Tigers in 2021.

The No. 22 was most recently worn by dual premiership Tiger Josh Caddy, and Jacob Hopper.

The Tigers’ second selection, Josh Smillie, has been given the No. 16 guernsey.

The numbers for the remainder of the Club’s 2024 Telstra AFL Draft picks are:

No. 24 – Taj Hotton

No. 26 – Jonty Faull

No. 29 – Jasper Alger

No. 31 – Luke Trainor

No. 34 – Harry Armstrong

No. 38 – Tom Sims

The Club has opted to keep the numbers recently worn by triple premiership and 300-game icons Dustin Martin (4), Jack Riewoldt (8 ), Trent Cotchin (9) and Shane Edwards (10) vacant for the 2025 season.

Number 11, most recently worn by triple premiership forward Jason Castagna has also remained vacant for next year, as has number 6.

In other guernsey number changes at the Club . . .

Jacob Hopper moves from No. 22 to No. 2, which is what he wore during his 114-game career with Greater Western Sydney.

Rhyan Mansell, second on the Tigers’ 2024 goalkicking list, and seventh in this year’s Jack Dyer Medal, takes the No. 7 after 53 games in No. 31.

Ben Miller goes from No. 46 to No. 12. The jumper has been kept vacant since Miller's former teammate and fellow key defender David Astbury wore it in three premierships.

Jacob Blight from No. 51 to No. 46.

Campbell Gray from No. 52 to No. 50.

Richmond’s full list of guernsey numbers for season 2025 is:

Extraordinary decisions IMO to give Miller 12 and Mansell 7.

These are two guys who should probably be losing their spots in 2025 or becoming depth-only.

To give them prestigious numbers is ludicrous IMO.

Agree.  Only 2 players have worn the number 7 in more than 100 games.  Ash Prescott is number 5 on the list FFS.  Most notable recent players are Bakes, Brown and Michael Mitchell.  But hardly an institutional RFC number.

I just think 7 is a coveted and low number and Mansell is a guy who should be in a much higher one. That's all really.

Thoughts on Miller in 12?

Ah the famous #7 at Richmond.  Wayne Walsh was first to wear it in my time, then it took a rest for a while until Mick Malthouse came on board.

Its the number we give to gritty little mongrels, so Mansell fits in pretty well ...     ;D

You can’t really tell a senior player they can’t have a vacant number for no other reason then it’s a low number. How’s that convo gonna go? “Sorry mate, you’re too shiite to wear that number, pick another….”

I can atleast see the argument with significant numbers like 12, but I do think it’s somewhat overplayed. At the end of the day there’s gonna be champions and there’s gonna be duds that wear all numbers from 1-50, it won’t change anything accomplished in that guernsey in the past.

When Astbury first took on the #12 after his debut season, I completely hated it. Don’t want to compare but I don’t think any of us thought Dave would become the player he did at that point either.

I don't like Mansell and Miller wearing 7 and 12 but we can't have a squad with a heap of low numbers vacant.

I expect these two to be on their last contract and delisted with Armstrong or Faull taking 12 in 2-3 years. Trainor to take 7 too.

The Tigers will keep Dustin Martin's famous number four in mothballs for at least a year. Top draft pick Sam Lalor had his eyes on Dusty's jumper but will need to bide his time.

Yes

My point was (is) although 29 is relatively high number it is a significant number at the RFC

It shouldn't be given out just because it is high number

Like number 4, 17 and a few others it should be earned

You can argue almost every common number is significant. Just back a bloke in and give it to them. But yeah Miller is very unworthy of #12 :lol

I actually posted I have an issue with Miller getting number 12

Some numbers are more significant than others

Study the history of the Club and it's pretty obvious which numbers are more significant (some would say revered) than others.

Number 8 for example is not significant because it was worn by Jack Riewoldt or Michael Roach or even D_ick Clay..it goes back much further than that

You're telling me to study the history of the club I've support for 4 decades? Perhaps I have and know how many premiership players have worn certain numbers and how some of the greatest talents ever were in jumpers like #28. Give you a hint on that one, Gordon's brother.

Many guernsey's have prestige. There's no need to make a bloke wear #52 until suddenly they are deemed worthy to wear a lower number. Just back blokes in. If they perform great. If not that's just life

Sorry, I wasn't telling you to study the history of the Club. It was a general comment that when or if anyone studies the history of the Club and/or the history of numbers it becomes apparent that there are many numbers that have an incredible history behind them

And it's my view and I've held this since i was a youngster that certain numbers just need to be earned.

Who could forget number 17 being given to Paul Hudson and they uproar it caused.... 17 is a very special number at the RFC and even the club admitted they stuffed up giving him that number

I love the romanticism of numbers in afl and I think it’s one of the things which makes afl great. In soccer 1 to the keeper, low numbers for defenders, Star mid in the 7 etc is all a bit cookie cutter for me.

I love that seemingly average numbers for other clubs eg 17 is massive for us. I don’t think it’s too precious at all to not just dish it out to a first year player. Me personally I’m more attached to the 4 because of Martin and Royce Hart

I like that players are meant to earn the number, but there’s a bit a contradiction to that theory this year
