Richmond's official 2025 pre-season game has been confirmed, with the Tigers to play Collingwood as part of the AAMI Community Series.
The AFL today confirmed that Richmond and Collingwood will clash at Ikon Park on Wednesday, February 26 from 7.10pm.
All AAMI Community Series matches will be broadcast live on Foxtel and Kayo. Tickets will be available in February.
AAMI Community Series games will be played in four 20-minute quarters plus time on, as is the case in the premiership season. However, there will be no interchange cap, with clubs able to name a squad of 30 players, including eight on the interchange and four emergencies. There can be only four players on the interchange bench at any time.
Clubs will also have the opportunity to participate in an optional match simulation training session at a date determined by the Clubs prior to the AAMI Community Series Matches.
Clubs will communicate their confirmed match simulation training sessions with all sessions to be managed by each club and broadcast arrangements to be confirmed at a later date.

RICHMOND v COLLINGWOOD
Wednesday February 26, 7.10pm at IKON Park, Carlton
How to watch on Fox Footy: From 7pm on Channel 504, with Anthony Hudson, Garry Lyon, Tom Hawkins and Nick Dal Santo.
Tigers’ burning question: Which players will benefit the most from exposure during match simulation?
To be blunt, Richmond’s outing against West Coast last week was far from desirable. It is the furthest thing from a secret that this season is about exposing the club’s next generation of stars, but outside of a select few, their first hit-out of 2025 didn’t showcase much of note. Jacob Blight and Thomson Dow were in and around the ball alongside No. 1 draft pick Sam Lalor, however the latter won’t play against the Pies after fracturing his jaw against the Eagles. Category B rookie Oliver Hayes-Brown showed glimpses as to why he was picked up by the Punt Road recruiters, and may be given a second look this Wednesday night. That being said, a plethora of senior players are expected to return for the only official pre-season match until the start of the home and away season; an addition that will undoubtedly take the burden off the shoulders of so many youngsters. In theory, any inexperienced players that suit up against the Pies will be in consideration to play Round 1 against Carlton, so this hit-out should tell us a lot as to which young guns are best placed after the pre-season.

No Smilie is a bummer. Seems like this is the boring team that Yze wants to field for round 01.

No Smilie is a bummer. Seems like this is the boring team that Yze wants to field for round 01.
Not risking Smilie is a smart move for mine. Can you imagine the outcry on here if he played, pinged his hammy again?
Ditto Lynch, though his is concussion related. Obviously hasn't ticked all the boxes on the "graded steps" required
-
Can't be helped bring disappointed at state of our draft haul for start of season. Robbed seeing them early on and spark some interest into the season.
Lalor - broken jaw
Millie - hammy
Hotten - ACL recovery
Faul - back?
Trainor - concussion history but seems OK but not best 22 yet
Armstrong - on bench
Alger - not picked
-
Pre-game Fox Footy/Kayo coverage has started.

I want to see us do the basics defensively which has been missing in the last couple of years plus touchwood no more injuries.

That's 15m?
Umps up to their usual double standards already ::).
-
Miller so soft
-
Good from Miller & Blight there. NOT.
-
Actually it was Dow. No surprises there
-
I want to see us do the basics defensively which has been missing in the last couple of years
So far the answer is no.
How could not one Tiger get to the fall of that high ball :facepalm.
-
That was a sitter missed by Trezise.
1 - 12
-
Good mark Bauer. Goal! :gotigers
Rich 1.1-7
Coll 3.0-18
-
Not sure about kmac in the middle
-
Front and square Tiges!
-
Need to kick those.
9 - 18
-
Freaking handballing when we should kick :banghead.
So a goal chance for us ends up a goal for the Pies :banghead.
I know it's only preseason, but you want to see change rather than the same handball-first stupidity from last year.
-
Rioli very poor handball there.
Goal them, too easy
-
It's going to be a very very long year
-
Freaking handballing when we should kick :banghead.
So a goal chance for us ends up a goal for the Pies :banghead.
And short kick when we should handball and go :help
-
Our defensive structure is so poor.
-
No organisation at all. I know we are young, but like last year, it’s our experienced players making mistakes and letting us down
-
If Jack Ross wants to make it as a midfielder he’s going to need to show some interest in his defensive efforts.
-
What's up with Hopper, always trying to do too much with it. Just do the basics FFS.
-
Hopper is one of the chief culprits wanting to handball rather than kick. Kills the flow.
Our goalkicking up to 2024 standards too :P.
1.6 to 6.0
-
Ross is rubbish. VFL level max.
-
Make that 1.7 :facepalm
-
What was Samson doing then? Just run blindly into the pack without looking at the ball :lol
-
We actually played ok. Dominated the last 10 mins. Just couldn’t convert.
Samson is useless.
-
Not as bad as the scoreboard says imo. Some things to like, some not. Sonesie looks the best he’s looked. Kmac very fumbly and panicky in the middle, bad experiment. Few brain fades. Ryan is not a fwds arse.
It’s a shame Lalor and smillie aren’t playing
-
What's up with Hopper, always trying to do too much with it. Just do the basics FFS.
He thinks he’s better than he is, has a chip on his shoulder
-
Quarter time
Richmond 1.7-13
Coll'wood 6.0-36
Goal: Bauer
We're being outclassed as expected but you can't knock the effort so far. Just want us to focus on doing the basics well. Like our smalls being front and square to the contest defensive side and of course our goal- or should that be our point-kicking :banghead. We've had enough chances to be close on the scoreboard. Inside 50s are 16 - 10.
-
Missed at least 4 sitters

Judging by the way he moves it's a bloody heavy chip. :shh

Another sitter missed :facepalm.

Mansell-enko you beauty. Nice grab!
More importantly, he kicks the goal too.
Rich 3.8-26
Coll 7.1-43

Samson you've got to hold onto those.

I'll say it again - Dow is the white JON. :shh

Sheesh, that’s as soft a free kick as you’ll see.
-
Ross free and 50 gets the goal back.
Rich 4.9-33
Coll 8.1-49
-
Sheesh, that’s as soft a free kick as you’ll see.
Yep. Blight wasn't watching the ball, but Mihocek went down so easily. Hardly pushed him.
-
The Pies defender had his back to the ball then. No free.
-
Should never have been in the Pies forward line. Kmac's crappy lazy kick towards Sonsie caused that.
-
Fallen off in the last 5 mins. Give away some very soft goals.
33 - 67
-
Defence is absolute garbage
-
Armstrong's first kick and shot from 45 misses.
34 - 67

We're missing and they can't miss.
9 goals to the Pies from stoppages :help.

Really poor last 10 mins. Lacking class is one thing but no excuses for poor efforts and switching off.
-
Last 10 minutes has been pathetic.

They are missing De Goey and Maynard.
We are down Gibcus, Balta, Lalor, Prestia, Lynch and Smillie
It’s been a pretty good showing so far

Half-time
Richmond 1.7 4.10-34

Last 10 mins were terrible
Up until then couldn't really question their effort.
-
Oh Broady. You've been ordinary tonight
-
Just feels like a 20 goal loss is coming up here.
-
Ross has been horrible.
-
Ross not alone
-
Giving Ben Miller No. 12 a very poor decision. Simply not deserving
-
Disposal is so bad. And from SENIOR players. It’s gonna take a long time to turn this around and clean out all the dead wood
-
Don't think Maurice Rioli should be in consideration for round one after tonight. Unsighted.
-
Giving Ben Miller No. 12 a very poor decision. Simply not deserving
Yep this was a poor decision. No issues with Miller being on our list but number 12 was madness.
-
Same as last week, goal of tonight is no injuries and just miles in the legs.
Slight concern of we lose by 15 goals but the purpose is to have a run around.
-
lmao - they can't miss... :birthday
-
Don't think Maurice Rioli should be in consideration for round one after tonight. Unsighted.
Most overrated player on the list
If his name was Mitchell Smith, he wouldn’t have been given the opportunities he’s been given
-
Silver lining, we won't need to worry about tanking for pick 1. It will be well deserved again. Perfectly timed rebuild before Tassie. We will look back on these 3 years and be very lucky we weren't Pies who will fall off a cliff in a 2-3 years and have absolutely no chance of rebuilding properly.
-
Mansell doing a 720 looking to handball off and then a dumping kick sums us up with the ball. No organisation.
OMG we actually kicked a goal (Kmac). The irony of our lowest % shot going through.
Rich 5.10-40
Coll 19.1-115

In fairness to him and the other forwards our forward 50 entries have been shambolic

stuff me - this is worse than I could ever have imagined
-
Campbell has had a mare tonight. That was a sitter dropped.
-
Seth Campbell & Rioli are both extremely overrated. Not sure what people see in either really.

Trezise also. Way to one sided for afl level.

Basics soundly lacking since halfway through the 2nd qtr

Samson can’t take a mark to save his life.
There can’t still be people who think he will make it ?
-
I don't think anyone drops more sitters than Samson.
-
I don't know who is teaching our blokes goalkicking but why do so many of our players hold the ball off-centre?
-
Rioli bad cramp. He couldn't chase then and he's gone off.
Blight hurt his shoulder but he's stayed on.
Geez we are allergic to goals :facepalm.
-
It's Feb but for me most disappointing thing was the selection table.
This side should have been filled with new recruits. I appreciate Lalor and Smillie are injured as is Hotten. But it was filled with guys who have been tried and tried again and are just either at their ceiling or not good enough. This shows the issue with our list as it'll take a while to turn over.
Nothing personal but half the team out there today need to be turned over for next era.
Dow
Ross
McIntosh
Ryan
Hopper
Miller
Rioli
Mansell
Nor sure if any other club picks up these guys for free if they had an option.

Hopper goal.
Rich 6.13-49
Coll 21.5-131
Can we get over 50 points?
-
Play Trainor R1.
-
Dumb to give it to the ruckman in any case but definitely not Samson :help.
-
Play Trainor R1.
Has to
-
That was more deliberate than the Kmac one.
Umps had no impact on the game but they have been harsher on us compared to the Pies.
-
Really missed Hugo out there tonight
-
Dreaming if you think Hugo would change anything
-
Ben Miller cannot play in round one either after tonight.
Trainor's already gone past him. :shh
-
No injuries I believe plus a few good patches the positives out of tonight.
Were all aware that there are players who aren't up to it so get the games into the youngsters as much as possible.
-
Dreaming if you think Hugo would change anything
Yes I was being facetious

Final Score
Richmond 1.7 4.10 5.10 6.13-49
Coll'wood 6.0 13.1 19.1 21.6-132
Goal: Bauer 2, Mansell, Ross, McIntosh, Hopper
More than competitive in general play for a quarter and half. But absolutely nothing after that. Only positive in the second half was Trainor after he came on.
Disappointly no change to the gamestyle since last year. We just don't do the defensive basics and still play hand-grenade handball with the ball.
Touchwood we got through unscathed :pray.
-
That was stuffen horrendous. I don’t think I’ve ever looked forward to a season less than this year
-
That was stuffen horrendous. I don’t think I’ve ever looked forward to a season less than this year
Well then, you have no stuffing idea how to follow a team that’s beginning its ascent.
Seriously, if that’s all you’ve got, stuff off and come back in 3 seasons.
As a supporter, you offer less than the players you bag so delist yourself!
The club deserves 2 seasons to reset.
Sure, there was some stuff, particularly defensively that was sub par.
But honestly, if after last year’s trade period, you expected any better than tonight/ you are an idiot.

Just got home
Bitterly disappointing night not so much the scoreline but the lack of applying the basics.
The lack of defensive pressure in our forward half was horrible. Our goal kicking was deplorable.
Some of the decisions around when players came on was puzzling to say the least.
Trainor and McAullife showed more in the half they played than a number of others. Why did it take until the 2nd half for them to make an appearance?
Why was Dow given so much game time and what's this business of trying to turn him into a winger? It was just the same old same old. We should be past that now.
I think we saw tonight what a huge hole no Balta means to our defence. As Noah sits on the stands for the next few weeks hope he realises what his actions have cost the club. Guarantee when Noah is available, we won't be playing Miller :pray. Blight is a much better option right now
While it was a disappointing night I don't think any of us should be surprised or shattered by the result. It was what most are expecting...
-
Tackling & pace still not a priority apparently. Good luck with that approach Adem. :shh
-
Also good to see Yze continue with his policy of giving Dow full games while restricting McAulliffe to 10 minute cameos at the end. :clapping
-
We’ve all experienced “ground zero “ before and that’s exactly where we find ourselves again .
The positives …
Trainor looked great
Blight was solid
Hopper was good
Short might be in for a better year .
Collingwood wasted such amazing accuracy in a practice match .
Buckle in boys , it’s going to a turbulent ride .

Just a pre season game I know but I would’ve liked to see a better performance.
There were some positives, we were able to turn the ball over in our forward half pretty well.
Trainor looks the goods, has good competitiveness too.
Same with Armstrong and Sims, they cracked in and weren’t scared, all you can ask for at this stage. Like sims cracked in harder than Samson ffs.
What’s concerning is our senior players just make such basic skill errors, what hope do we have if that’s the case ?
Hopper handballing in hope to no one or straight to Collingwood. Ross pretty hopeless too but I thought he got better as it went on. Miller disgraceful effort. Nothing from our small fwds… Campbell showed a bit when he ran through the midfield.
On the midfield, so one paced and slow, as we all know after last years debacle. Watching Daicos zip around makes hopper,Taranto, Ross look like cones.
Don’t expect much this year but the worst case scenario is we get nothing from our experienced players and no development from the guys 22-23Yo+
I fear a 90% list turnover is needed
-
I can smell a return of WAT back to the fray
-
I'm convinced we're a big chance of getting a priority pick this year 4 wins in 2 seasons
-
Didn't watch a second of it.
On paper it looks like the strongest side Pies could field vs a very 50-50 tigers side with some vets rested again?
Regardless we're going to be smashed this year. Often .
-
Is it quite possible that our 7 draft picks will all be best 22 by about round 6.
Lalor and Smillie probably already are. Trainor looks like he will be even with Balta back. Balta Gibcus Broad Trainor Short and Vlastuin our best backline with Blight on bench.
Faul and Armstrong walk into this side. Lynch probably keeps one of them out but I'd play both as much as possible. Well ahead of Ryan. Bauer unsure. Lefau unsure.
Hotton and Alger a matter of time before walking in. Hotten does when he's fit. Alger id be pushing.
Be just about a record of 7 draft picks being in best 22 the following year. Can't see it not happening with all being fit.

I cannot see Faull playing much if at all this season TBBH
Stress fractures of the back are l8ng term injury and shouldn't be rushed. Slow approach like they did with Fawcett is the way to go.
-
Two extra points for me.
1. Allowing the opposition the easy outlet kick from a behind. No Richmond player anywhere near them. Was a concern for me and seems a basic set up error.
2. Does the young team tag become a self fulfilling prophecy where the players on the team just expect to wear down as the game progresses. I understand that 10 year players are going to be fitter and stronger but 18-23 year olds are still men. I'm sure it's obvious but I wonder if it plays on the minds of young teams and can be used as an out or an excuse for poor performances.
That is all.
-
I can smell a return of WAT back to the fray
Hope so. Looking forward reading detailed analysis of kicking actions along with the astute criticisms of phantom players again. :shh

Both are great points :thumbsup

I agree Georgies but can’t help but be a little excited that we might have 6-9 kids that can really play.
Lalor looked plenty good. Loved Trainor. Brown seems a keeper. I am hoping penny has dropped with Sonsie.
Gibcus can play fitness :praying
There’s some serious talent here

That was a typical performance of a rebuilding side with youth . Good first half and the a drop off or good patches here and there. Forget about 4 qtrs aren't going to happen. It's all about good signs with the cubs this year.
My few worries
Some senior players still continue to kill us with poor skills and kicking or lack of performance. The midfield is to similar all one paced. The second tier of players need to step up.
The 2nd tier are not good enough. The majority are VFL standard

We're effectively starting our list build again from scratch. Similar to the 2006-2011 period (2004-5 drafts were wasted). A mixture of older players who are past their best, raw yet talented cubs, and the rest not up to standard. Hard to see us moving outside the bottom 4 and up the ladder until the early 2030s when the newbies reach have reached their early-mid 20s and have 80+ AFL games experience under their belt.

Cornes: Was Richmond's AAMI Community Series side the worst team on paper in a decade?
By Nic Negrepontis
SEN
28 Feb 2025
Kane Cornes has labelled the Richmond 26-man squad named for their AAMI Community Series loss to Collingwood the worst side put on the park since the Suns and Giants’ inaugural seasons.
With Dion Prestia, Sam Lalor, Tom Lynch, Noah Balta and Josh Smillie unavailable and the likes of Liam Baker, Daniel Rioli, Shai Bolton and Jack Graham departing in the off-season, plus the retirement of Dustin Martin, the Tigers are officially in full rebuild mode.
Collingwood rolled them by 83 points and kicked 21 goals against a Richmond side that only featured five remaining premiership players.
Cornes says he will be keeping a close eye on Richmond crowds this season and hopes fans show up to support the team.
“Rebuilding sounds great on paper until you actually have to go through it and Richmond’s 22 (from the AAMI Community Series) is the worst 22 I’ve seen since Gold Coast and the Giants came into the competition,” Cornes told SEN Breakfast.
“This is worse (than North and West Coast’s recent teams).
“I’m putting the Richmond crowds in the gun. You were all for the rebuild and the young players coming in – will you turn up this year? Will Richmond fans turn up this year?
“In 2018, the average home crowd was 61,000. In 2023 it was 51,000. Last year it was 44,400. What will the average crowd for Richmond home games be this year? Will it be 1993 levels of 24,000?
“Rebuilding is great on paper until you actually have to go through it and how supportive will the Richmond fans be? Will they turn up and watch them? I’ll be watching closely.”
Richmond host Carlton in the traditional Thursday night season opener, with their next two home games against Brisbane in Round 4 and Gold Coast in Round 6.
The Tigers had 98,489 members in 2024, down from 101,349 the year before.

What we learned about all 18 clubs this pre-season

RICHMOND
Result: 83-point loss to Collingwood (49-132)
What we learned:
The going was tough for Richmond in their first official match of 2025, but their fans can rest easier knowing that regardless of the scoreline, the long-term guidance from senior players to their youth will eventually pay dividends.
Leading at the very front on Wednesday night at Princes Park were Jayden Short and Jacob Hopper, who performed across half-back and the midfield respectively. The duo each filled their stat lines, but it was their actions that spoke louder than their numbers.
“I thought there were some real positives from their senior players,” Geelong modern-day great Tom Hawkins said of the pair post-game.
Toby Nankervis, Kamdyn McIntosh and Jack Ross could also hold their heads high in the clash, with their importance this season amplified in the otherwise-tough night for Adem Yze’s men.
If there’s one other positive that can come out of the loss to the Magpies, it’s that despite the grim scoreline, the Tigers had only two less inside 50s than their opponents, and had five more clearances thanks to some of the aforementioned senior players.
Ultimately, it was execution by foot and hand that allowed Collingwood to run away winners in the manner that they did, but there were more positives this week than what there were from last week’s match simulation against West Coast.

That’s why it’s going to be a long time before we see finals again, effectively a full list turnover

We'll still need to bring in some mature players a some point though - especially if most of the current ones go - and the first lot won't be stars, they'll probably be state leaguers, fringe players & retreads from other clubs. Might get a Houli or a Grigg but people forget they were also fairly ordinary players in the years before the flag.:shh
-
Anyone remember Brisbane go home 5?
People thought football in qld was screwed back then.
Feels a bit similar to us at the end of last year.
Dio, we will have to get some mature bodies, we might like what we get for the next few years but they are just place holders while the draft picks develop.
The nucleus of Brisbane’s flag team came through the 2015- 2017 and then they went hard after better players with the likes of Neale and Dunkley.
-
Well said , bring in the needed quality players from other clubs when the kids have developed sounds like a sensible plan.

I get the notion of “oh man teams always kick for goal super accurately against us” and while that may be true sometimes as it can be for all teams, it’s moreso a sign of just how bad we are defensively. The degree of difficulty of opposition poos against us is surely the easiest by far. Transition defence gets exposed all the time leading to easy goals directly infront inside 20m.
