Adem Yze offers pre-season update on Richmond's exciting draft crop

By SEN
13 Feb 2025

Richmond took a whopping eight players in the 2024 AFL Draft and Tigers fans are keen to see how those Tiger cubs shape up in their first AFL season in 2025.

Seven of those selections were made in the first 28 picks on draft night, with a raft of young elite talent heading to Punt Road in what many considered a super-draft.

With Richmond fans keen to get their first look at these youngsters during an unofficial match simulation against West Coast in Perth on Monday, February 17 and an AAMI Community Series match against Collingwood on Wednesday, February 26 at Ikon Park, coach Adem Yze provided an update on seven of the eight draftees.

Yze started by giving an update on the progress of three youngsters who are currently sidelined while naming others that Richmond fans can expect to see before their season officially kicks off next month against Carlton.

Taj Hotton (pick 12)

“We've got a few that are in our rehab program,” Yze said.

“Taj Hotton's obviously not going to be available until the middle of the year. He had an ACL during last season.

“But he's a highly talented player and we can't wait for him to integrate into training.

Jonty Faull (pick 14)

“Jonty Faull is similar, he’s only begun to integrate into training.

“ He had a stress fracture last year in his lower back and he came back and played finals in the Under 18s and we just wanted to have a cautious approach after looking at the scan.

“He’s started to join in training, he can't wait. He wants to start to hit bodies. He's a competitive kid.”

Josh Smillie (pick 7)

“Josh Smillie has had a little bit of a hamstring issue, but he's starting to integrate into training.

“Up until Christmas, he hadn't missed the beat.

“Josh and a couple of the other boys might be available for the Collingwood game, so we'll give them some exposure as well.”

Sam Lalor (pick 1), Harry Armstrong (pick 23), Thomas Sims (pick 28) and Jasper Alger (pick 58)

“Sam Lalor,  Harry Armstrong and Tom Sims have done the majority of the sessions and they're at a stage right now that this weekend they'll be able to play.

“We’ll be able to see two or three of our younger boys including Jasper Alger who will play on Monday as well.

“Half of them (the draftees) have got enough training load into them that they'll get some exposure this weekend.

“This weekend we'll take a younger list over to the West. They'll get an opportunity to travel and get used to an interstate game, which is nice.

“The boys are training really well, and we can't wait to start to give them some exposure to AFL level.”

What about Trainor? Has Yze forgotten about him.

Apparently he’s fitted in so seamlessly they think he’s a fourth year player

Funny he's supposedly he's playing in Perth on Monday. We I'll know for sure tomorrow

Seems there's a few on here who are hellbent on wanting to whack Serpell for anything and everything.  ::)

He's 5 months into a role where he is cleaning up a mess he inherited. Taking a cautious approach with our ACL group insisting they take the full 12 month recovery. In the case of Gibcus, he's recommended extending his recovery time to get it right and people go whack. Any of the ACL group come back too early and end up with soft tissue injuries and he'll cop it.

I reckon the bloke deserves some time before he gets crucified

Hmmmmm...

Just watched the video of the open training from yesterday (Friday) which included some match sim drill. Trainer was involved in those,  running around

But whatever....

So when does he plan on finally unveiling his game plan? Or is he going to keep us all in suspense until his third year and then ambush the comp.with his carefully concealed tactical brilliance? #cunningplan :shh

Unfortunately, I think he is a dud.

Very uninspiring speaker and his game plan, if there is one to decipher, appears to be slow and outdated.

Time will tell but I don’t have much hope for him.

not calling him a dud just yet. Far too early and lets not forget this list is one big mess.

That being said he would put me to sleep. He is coaching as he used to play. Soft. This better change or he will be unemployed soon.

I agree it’s too early to know for sure, but the early sings are not good in my opinion.

You look at our senior players and you don’t exactly associated many of them with high paced offense. We are missing the likes of Dusty, lambert, shedda, Rioli.

If we play a more defensive game style it will simply be because we don’t have the cattle and need to protect our cubs from getting 100 point beltings every week.

We don’t really know until rd1 but I don’t have many expectations considering the ins will be guys like hopper, Taranto, Prestia

May be a reach, but I'd like to think bringing back in 8-10 senior players may free up some of our faster kids to do that rather than having them do the engine room work.

Its possible and some on field leadership always helps. I'm just not confident in a midfield comprising of Presta Hopper and Taranto.
