Free to Samson 25 out. Toner plays on and puts it through but no advantage is paid. Samson set shot misses. Thanks ump!

McCarthy wins the HTB on the point of the F50. Set shot is too narrow and OOTF. Needed to put it out front of the goals to let the breeze bring it back in.
We're wasting chances.
-
George long and Samson marks again 30 out. Misses again.
24 - 8
You need to aim for the inside of the goalpost on the opposite side to where you sre shooting from.
-
Samson intercept mark 45 out but he tries centering it and the kick is too high and spoiled. Another chance wasted :banghead.
Brisbane run it up the other end for a goal.

Stuffed around with handball in the middle when we have the breeze. Allow Brisbane in and they end up with a shot after the siren. Lucky they miss.

Quarter time
Richmond 3.6-24
Brisbane 2.3-15
Goals: Ryan, Rioli, Raso
First 10 mins very good then just wasted chance after chance with the breeze for the rest of the quarter combined with two brainfades that gifts the Lions both their goals.
Smillie quiet so far. A couple of good vision handballs in traffic from inside to a free teammate on the outside.
Samson on top as ruck forward for most of that 1st qtr but wasted his chances in front of the sticks. Could have had 4 goals already if he could kick straight.

Excellent quarter of footy into the breeze thanks to ground level game and transition play.
Samson's best game so far. Credit where it is due.
Smillie is just so clean. Not influential yet but was more involved that quarter and his vision and what he does is classy.
Faull presenting and competing well up forward. It's allowing our small forwards and half-forwards into the game.
Gray doing well down back. Some important strong spoils.
-
Smillie just going for a run, good to get some fitness into it.

A quarter of two halves. We came out after the main break asleep, and play spent most of the time in Brisbane's forward half. Fortunately, our backline held up. Then that Brisbane turnover from a kick-in which gifted Alger's goal woke us up and we slammed on 4 goals in a row.

Brisbane 2.3 3.8 4.12 8.15-63
Goals: Raso 3, Faull 2, Yassine 2, Ryan, Rioli, Alger, Sims, McKenzie
Last quarter was junk but we won the game in the first 3 quarters. That second quarter into the breeze was our best footy so far.
Samson was BOG.
Faull was very good up forward. Continually presented and if he didn't mark it, he would bring the ball to ground. Kicked 2.3.
Gray was a spoiling machine down back. A rock today.
Sims got more involved in the game as it went along. Started clunking his contested marks which was good to see.
Smillie played all the first half but looked like he was managed after half-time. Just clean especially by hand and with vision out of traffic.
Alger solid in general play but his impact on the scoreboard was limited as he kicked only 1.4.
Maurice only played the first half but aside from the goal wasn't really noticeable.
Hugo was Hugo.
Kosi was solid down back and intercepted well although his kicks can be lazily off one step.
OHB did his job as 2nd ruck. A decent game from the big bloke.

Smillie will be an absolute gun
People forget he was predicted to go number one for a long time

Richmond VFL defeat Brisbane to remain undefeated

5 April 2025
The VFL Tigers have continued their strong start to the season, defeating the Brisbane Lions by 22 points on Saturday morning at the Swinburne Centre, 12.13 (85) to 8.15 (63).
The hosts got off to a flying start, hitting the scoreboard within the first 15 seconds of the contest through Maurice Rioli Jr.
Massimo Raso and Samson Ryan also converted in the opening term to see the Tigers lead by nine points at quarter time.
Raso, again, was outstanding for the Tigers, converting three goals.
Ryan (23 disposals, nine marks, 16 hit-outs, six marks and one goal) also established a strong presence around the ground through the contest.
The Tigers’ defence was outstanding, with coach Jake Batchelor praising the efforts of his defenders.
“We lost clearance by 25…which is not a good number, but we only got scored 18 points off stoppage against, so our ability to defend behind the ball was really strong,” Batchelor said post-match.
“I thought they (Campbell Gray and Mutaz El Nour) had some really good moments, same with Jacob Koschitzke and Nick Guiney.”
Tom McCarthy (22 disposals, five marks and seven tackles) put forward another strong outing from half-back, while Austin Johnson didn’t miss a beat on return, collecting 20 disposals.
Hugo Ralphsmith was also impressive on his return to action, notching up 18 disposals, five tackles and three clearances.
Youngster Josh Smillie notched up 10 disposals while playing on managed minutes, while Jasper Alger and Jonty Faull were both potent in the forward half, combining for 10 scoring shots.
The clinical Tigers built on their quarter-time lead through Mohammed Yassine, Raso and Faull’s goals in the second term, before kicking away in the third term to establish a 40-point three quarter time lead.
199cm tall forward Thomas Sims was also strong on the day with 17 disposals, five marks, six tackles, 10 hit-outs and one goal.
The VFL Tigers, currently placed second on the Smithy’s VFL ladder, enter the league-wide bye with a 3-0 record.
During the league-wide bye round for the AFL’s Gather Round, Richmond VFL will face the AFL Academy.
Richmond 3.6 7.9 11.10 12.13 (85)

Samson Ryan (23 disposals, nine marks, 16 hit-outs, six clearances, one goal)
“Competed really strongly in the ruck against Henry Smith. Gave away a few free kicks, which took a bit of the shine off his performance, but he was solid in the air, got forward well, and followed up strongly around the ground.”
Hugo Ralphsmith (19 disposals, two marks, five tackles)
“Hugo ran his backside off up and down the wing all day — huge work rate. He showed leadership and played with controlled aggression in the contest when it was needed. Great to have him back out there.”
Jacob Koschitzke (18 disposals, eight marks)
“Played a really effective system-based game. Beat a quality opponent in Darcy Gardiner across four quarters and had nine intercept possessions. He’s getting to the right spots and putting his hand up for AFL selection.”
Thomas Sims (17 disposals, five marks, six tackles, 10 hit-outs, one goal)
“He’s getting better every week. Took on some ruck time and clunked three contested marks in big packs, which was really impressive. Also showed great defensive chasing efforts, which are rare for key talls.”
Campbell Gray (14 disposals, four marks, two tackles)
“Produced his first full four-quarter performance this season. Showed his aerial skills, and his work at ground level, especially his one-two efforts, were strong. He’s continuing to put his hand up for AFL selection.”
Oliver Hayes-Brown (12 disposals, 18 hit-outs, three clearances)
“Has been showing rapid improvement lately. His ruck craft is developing well. Had 100% efficiency on his 11 handballs. He finds targets, moves through tackles well, and adds a unique look to our midfield group.”
Jasper Alger (10 disposals, three marks, one goal)
“Didn’t quite cash in on the scoreboard but was throwing himself at everything. Needs to tweak when to go aerial versus staying at ground level, but there’s a real weapon in him we want to keep encouraging.”
Josh Smillie (10 disposals, three tackles)
“Great to see him out there. Played around a half and got through well. Gave away a free early on through sheer intent, just lacked technique, but threw his body around fearlessly. He’s a big boy and didn’t hold back. He’ll be better for the hit-out and I'm looking forward to him getting more minutes this week.”
Jonty Faull (nine disposals, three marks, two goals)
“Never seen a key forward initiate contact as consistently as he does. Earned a free for it and constantly brings the ball to ground. He’s a great teammate.”
Maurice Rioli (two disposals, one tackle, one goal)
“The stats might not jump out, but he played a half as our AFL carry-over emergency and did his job well. Applied pressure, chased hard after turnovers, and is setting the tone for defensive effort and intent. No doubt, the scoreboard impact will come for Maurice.”
