Hawthorn v Richmond Preview
Andrew Slevison
SEN
2 May 2025
Hawthorn’s Centenary celebrations take place against Richmond at the MCG on Sunday.
The two clubs clashed in the Hawks’ very first VFL game back in 1925 at Glenferrie Oval with the Tigers saluting by 39 points.
On face value, you wouldn’t expect a similar result this weekend given the Hawks are a serious side and the Tigers are rebuilding.
Sam Mitchell’s Hawks returned to winning ways with a 50-point smashing of West Coast last Sunday night, recoiling after two straight defeats.
Ruckman Lloyd Meek was imperious, off-season recruit Josh Battle played his best game in brown and gold to date and veteran forward Jack Gunston keeps on keeping on, booting another four goals to take his season tally to 17.
The Tigers were competitive for three quarters against Melbourne but were blown away in the third term, which has been a bit of a trend in 2025. They’d want to stay competitive for longer against a side like the Hawks.
As mentioned earlier, this on paper appears somewhat one-sided but Adem Yze’s Tigers have already surprised Carlton and Gold Cast this season, so never say never.
The Hawks faithful helped the Tigers achieve an enormous crowd of 92,311 for Dusty’s 300th in June last year, so it would be nice to see the Tiger Army repay the faith for Hawthorn’s big day.
You’d expect that Richmond will at times make life difficult for the Hawks, but in the end the class of the top-four chasers should come out on top to tick their sixth win of the season.
Prediction: Hawthorn by 35 points.

Tigers’ burning question:
Can they keep the floodgates closed against hot Hawks?
Ball movement hasn’t been a strength of Hawthorn’s this season as rival clubs have started keying in on what Sam Mitchell’s side likes to do with the footy, but the Tigers have been one of the worst at preventing the opposition from capitalising on attacking chains. Richmond is currently allowing a defensive 50 chain-to-score at the second-easiest rate of any side in the competition, sitting above only West Coast. It also sits above only North Melbourne when it comes to limiting opponents’ defensive-half to forward-50 movement. Noah Balta’s likely return to the side will help Adem Yze’s brigade once the ball is in their defensive 50 — but the key will be whether they can do a better job at keeping it from getting there in the first place after the Demons moved with fluency in the second half on Anzac Day Eve.

:thumbsup
-
Short is deadset useless as a defender
-
Not protecting the defensive side is killing us so far. The number of times the Hawks are bursting out of the front of contests :scream.
-
Just bombing it to Lynch isn't working. Need leads and lower the eyes.
-
Ball in our forward half for the last 10 mins. We should be in front. Just wasting our inside 50s and when we do get a shot we blow it :banghead
Then they get a goal against the run of play :banghead.
-
That we are only 14 points down is a miracle
Short is a liability
Our F50 entries are embarrassing
-
Quarter time
Richmond 0.3-3
Hawthorn 2.5-17
Did well defensively in the last 15 mins but we have no idea except bomb it when going inside 50. Forwards have got to move and either create options or space. And our mids have got to lower the eyes. Only Brown has hit up targets with a couple of clever kicks.
-
It was good to see Lalor start in guts
-
Inside 50s: 16 - 10
16 times going inside 50 for no goals :facepalm.
-
Frees 3 - 8 ::)
-
We are looking as slow, predictable and boring as we have all year
-
Lynch turned into a very selfish footballer. Sad to see
-
I just can’t believe how many DUMB players we have. Balta, Taranto, Maurice, Ralph smith, banks, all just lacking smarts
-
Get shirt out of the stuffing backline.
-
Terrible defending in the goalsquare allowing a chest mark to Chol :facepalm.
-
Absolutely pathetic today.
Not a single player other than tom brown has been good imo
-
Finally! Seth finishes off the chain.
Rich 1.4-10
Haw 5.7-37
-
Out of the middle for two in a row :o. Faull goals :gotigers
Rich 2.4-16
Haw 5.7-37
-
Give away another soft goal :banghead.
Lynch should have been aware. Poor from a senior player.
Then Short falls over the goalsquare.
-
Lynch plays really dumb selfish footy these days.
Miller is the worst walk up key defender in the league
-
Falling over in the goal square fatal error
-
Half-time
Richmond 0.3 2.4-16
Hawthorn 2.5 7.8-50
Goals: Campbell, Faull
What a dumb last two minutes giving away two goals :banghead.
5 of their 7 goals from our turnovers.
-
Last goal came about as hawthorn ruck threw the ball. Woeful umpiring
-
Unbelievable last minute there.
Love the commentary - tigers can't afford to concede a goal in this last 45 seconds.
Hold our beers, we'll concede two!
-
Lynch turned into a very selfish footballer. Sad to see
Sorry can't agree Sim
Bloke's busting a gut, constantly is against 2 in marking contests, trying to bring his teammates into the game. Gets the ball just outside of F50 and no one leads, so of course he gets tackled from behind. To me that's not selfish, that's trying to do and be everything in a very young side
-
Free kicks 14-5 at half time seems about right.
Just wait until we're 10 goals down then we'll get some crap ones in the backline to even that up.

What about constantly ignoring first options and trying to do too much… how many times does he try a fend off and get caught, everyone knows he will get done but him apparently

Rich 3.4-22
Haw 8.8-56
-
Just schoolboy errors :banghead. Miller runs over the ball :scream.
-
I’m so sick of watching our experienced players play such dumb footy.
-
It's hard to watch.
Hawks running the ball through way to easily.

Trezise subbed on for Rioli.

Nice goal by Green.
Rich 4.4-28
Haw 9.10-64

How have MJs 5 possessions been this week. Top quality?
-
Dow can barely kick the football
-
So it's now a free kick if you run into a handballing arm :facepalm
Frees 5 - 18 ::)
-
How have MJs 5 possessions been this week. Top quality?
No worse than the others though apparently.
:lol
-
Chol and Gunston both without a man side by side ? Unbelievable
-
Hopper Taranto just ambling through the middle on that play, Hawks goal.
Both lazy.
-
Two HTB interpretations out there ::).
-
Geez we look unfit
-
Not sure why we'd play a hard high forward press in the last minute :huh3. That was a gift to Hawthorn.
-
Jonty Faull may end up a good footballer but he's clearly not ready.
Be great to get him back to the VFL.
-
3/4 time

Just out-classed. Our bottom 4 skills and decision making have been shown up today.
-
Really wish they'd drop Short.
-
Our goalkicking has been crap today :scream.
And of course we get punished the other way :banghead.
-
Could lose this by 100 yet.
Heads have dropped.
No chasing.
-
Field umpire called touched. Why was there a review
-
Can someone teach Tresize to kick or handball on his right side FFS. Shouldn't be playing at this level.
-
Two teammates short and free inside 50 and Green instead kicks to the boundary to no one except a Hawk :huh3
-

Disgraceful
-
Love how we load up on 4 small forwards again because it worked so well for us last week.
Just stupid selection and outside Campbell there all below average footballers
-
Pathetically soft last quarter. Undisciplined in terms of switching off.
Leaving Chol alone in the goalsquare :facepalm
-

Agree. We are playing atleast 1 too many.
-
Lynch has had a mare in front of the sticks today.
-
Finally! Dow to Brown = goal.
37 - 109
Hello junk time!
-
We were well on our way to losing big anyway but they all just gave up after that short turnover and hawks goal
-
Nice by Trainor in the lead up. Trezise Goal.
44 - 109
-
Final score
Richmond 0.3 2.4 4.4 6.8-44
Hawthorn 2.5 7.8 11.11 16.13-109
Goals: Campbell, Faull, Green, Mansell, Brown, Trezise.
First quarter we failed to take our chances despite dominating the inside 50s. After that we were totally out-played and out-classed. Too many had poor games. Two weeks in a row it's been a hard frustrating watch.
-
We dish up that next week and the Eagles will get their first in
-
Poorest game so far.
I will say I'm impressed we've managed to get 2 wins on the board so far. Compare our draw to GC who have played both Eagles and North already plus the rest of the bottom 6.
Our best footy can be at the likes of Eagles, Roos and Dons. Vs a plucky cocky Hawks was unlikely to get a result. I'm coy on bringing McAuliffe in, I don't mind the idea of him playing a chunk of games in midfield and learning craft. Unless they bring him in and play mid all game, don't bother.
-
Time for a few blokes to have a spell with the VFL team having the bye.
McAuliffe, Sonsie, Smillie (even though he's not ready), Smith for Short.

HRS is a shocker. I would be very suprised if he makes.
MRJ also has had another shocker. see above
Mansell rubbish, did he even lay a tackle?
I would drop all 3
-
You'd think we were coming off another 5 day break
Should have been refreshed and up and about
We weren't
-
Who in their right mind allowed the no.7 to be given to Mansell?
-

Well gee wiz I wonder what ever could the issue possibly be? :whistle :shh
-
Who in their right mind allowed the no.7 to be given to Mansell?
Why do u keep saying this? What is so prestigious about the no.7 that any player shouldn’t be able to wear it?

Above the shoulders, not switched on and deplorable skill execution, pretty lethal combination I would have thought ;D
-
Surely today was Hopper’s fault
If he doesn’t break down , will win the B&F
Where are the haters?

Single-digit numbers at the Tigers carry prestige—they’re worn by the club’s best

Not true. Typically they only allow new draftees to wear high digit guernsey numbers. After a few seasons if they are still on the list they can change to any vacant number.
Like I said #7 holds no special prestige at Richmond. If you answer damos question you’ll see why.
-
A small step backwards…..but we all knew improvement wouldn’t be linear .
I think there were some positive signs in the first quarter- you can see what we are trying to do but we just couldn’t get any reward on the scoreboard.
Trainor played another promising game .
I think it’s time to inject Kane McAuliffe and Jasper Alger into the team . They have both put in a solid body of work in the VFL .
MJ has been poor 2 weeks in a row - he’s been treading water for 2 years now .
I have no idea where Short fits into our future.
-
The list cloggers are becoming more apparent by the week. Our 2024 draftees list is a growing strength

RICHMOND
In fairness, the 65-point loss to Hawthorn on Sunday went about as expected, but it still wasn’t a great showing. The positives? They were able to prevent the Hawks from deploying slingshot football in it’s optimal form. “We didn’t see as much end-to-end play that we might normally see from Hawthorn, so that’s credit to Richmond,” Collingwood legend Nathan Buckley said on Fox Footy during the match. “Their energy’s been great, they’ve had 18 front-half turnovers (but) they just haven’t been able to get bang for buck.” Bigger picture, their tough task over the weekend will hopefully serve them well for a very winnable date with West Coast next round that would take them to three wins from their first nine games… not bad for all the pre-season talk!
In the votes
There won’t be any Tigers who poll come Brownlow night from this match, but former Giants duo Jacob Hopper (28 disposals, five clearances, one goal assist) and Tim Taranto (26 disposals, eight tackles, five inside 50s) kept themselves busy around the ground. Down back, Luke Trainor (21 disposals — 90.5 per cent efficiency, eight marks) continued his upwards trajectory in just his eighth AFL game.
Room for improvement
Richmond actually led the inside 50 count at quarter time 16-10, but it all went downhill from there. The Hawks managed 117 more disposals, 33 more contested possessions, 26 more marks, nine more inside 50s and seven more clearances. Additionally, they had 11 more turnovers — despite having significantly less of the Sherrin. Given Hawthorn are touted a genuine premiership chance, this could’ve ended much worse for Adem Yze’s side, but it was still a tough watch for the vast majority of the match.

Several Tiger players fined by MRO
Several Richmond players have received fines from the MRO after a melee during the second quarter in Sunday's loss to Hawthorn at the MCG.
Tim Taranto, Jacob Hopper, Hugo Ralphsmith, Toby Nankervis, Jonty Faull and Seth Campbell, have all been charged with engaging in the melee.
All have been handed $1,500 fines, which can be downgraded to $1,000 each if they accept early pleas.
Additionally, Campbell and Rhyan Mansell have been charged for engaging in another melee that occurred in the final term of Richmond's 65-point loss.
Both can accept $1,500 fines, which can be reduced to $1,000 each if they choose to accept the early plea.
