8 point game this one
-
Dish up what we did today and we are zero chance
-
Hawthorn’s method and execution was superior - particularly after half time. I thought effort was really good in the first half but it didn’t look like we had a gameplan
-
SPOONBOWL!
It may only be Round 9 but it’s hard to imagine the Tigers claiming the wooden spoon if they beat the Eagles this week. At some point West Coast will stumble their way to a win or two, but you’d expect Richmond is just as likely to add to their haul over the rest of the season. These teams do face each other again in Round 19 in Perth, and they’ve got games against the Kangaroos too, but a three-win gap will still be very hard to close. At the very least it’d be nice if West Coast could avoid getting smashed on the road again, because a competitive game between lowly teams is always fun in a weird way (like Bombers-North the other night). It’s kinda wild that their best performance of the year was still the game against Brisbane in Brisbane.

Richmond v West Coast Preview
Andrew Slevison
SEN
8 May 2025
Richmond hosts West Coast in the battle of the rebuilds at the MCG on Sunday afternoon.
The Tigers enter as favourites for the first time this season against a winless Eagles outfit coached by Andrew McQualter, who is no stranger to the yellow and black.
The former Richmond assistant and interim coach has seen his Eagles side struggle across their eight games so far in 2025, failing to bank any premiership points while winning just three of 32 quarters.
Adem Yze’s Tigers have similarly struggled at times, but their best form has seen them pocket two against-the-odds victories against Carlton and Gold Coast. Those experiences will be invaluable for the emerging Tiger cubs.
Last week they were humbled by a rampaging Hawthorn having been somewhat competitive in the first half. In order to beat the Eagle, they’ll need to be better for longer and avoid the capitulations that have been evident in their game in recent times.
They can take with them the knowledge that they’ve beaten the Eagles in four of the past five meetings, although they were comfortably beaten by 39 points in Perth in Round 5 last year.
It’ll be a fascinating contest between two clubs reassembling themselves for the future.
Right now, the Tigers seem to be slightly more advanced than the Eagles, and couple that with a home game at the ‘G, you have to side with the yellow and black.
Prediction: Richmond by 10 points.

Interesting test for this group today. See how all these young players respond to the psyche of being favourites, and rightfully we are. We should win today, they know it, so let’s see how that affects them.
Nonetheless exciting display of the future with so many under 50 games still, but Lalor, Faull, Sims, Trainor, McAulife all under 15 games. Quite remarkable really

NO LATE CHANGES

-
Geez Vlastuin has some horrible moments at times.
-
Nice moments for McAulife already, super strong in the tackle
-
Utter slop so far. Missing targets and fumbling.
-
Hopefully someone pile drives Graham and Baker into the MCG turf
-
Great kick out of defence by Broad to Ross. Opened up the ground. Lynch mark/free = goal :gotigers.
7 - 1
-
Greens kicking leaves a lot to be desired
-
Great kick out of defence by Broad to Ross. Opened up the ground. Lynch mark/free = goal :gotigers.
7 - 1
Wasn’t a mark or a free
But we will take it lol
-
Trainor conned the ump there lol but dumb by the Eagles player.
Taranto goal :gotigers
Rich 2.3-15
WCE 0.2-2
Can tell this game is between two bottom sides :P
-
Great kick out of defence by Broad to Ross. Opened up the ground. Lynch mark/free = goal :gotigers.
7 - 1
Wasn’t a mark or a free
But we will take it lol
Front on contact. Eagles player wasn't in the marking contest.
-
Lucky shank from Sims. Campbell goal :gotigers
Rich 3.3-21
WCE 0.2-2
-
Should be two more goals up but they look crap as let's be honest
If ever a team was going to go winless it's this mob fmd they suck
-
Great kick out of defence by Broad to Ross. Opened up the ground. Lynch mark/free = goal :gotigers.
7 - 1
Wasn’t a mark or a free
But we will take it lol
Front on contact. Eagles player wasn't in the marking contest.
If that decision happened at the other end of the ground you’d have a meltdown
-
Lucky we are playing a crap side. We've been opened up a couple of times but haven't been punished.
-

Front on contact. Eagles player wasn't in the marking contest.

No I wouldn't as it was clear free ::). The dodgy one was the Trainor reversal.
-
How often does vlastuin get caught holding the ball when he tries to fend off ? He needs to play to his limitations
-
How often does vlastuin get caught holding the ball when he tries to fend off ? He needs to play to his limitations
He's lost a bit of pace that's why. In the twilight
-
Disappointing way to finish a solid quarter giving up two cheap goals.
-
Pretty horrible skills. So many missed handballs, kicks and shots on goal. Also seem to be getting exposed through the middle a lot, west coast are just too bad to capitalise
-
What an average game of footy. They are crap but so are we.
Need some forwards to clunk some marks with the height we have up there.
-
Quarter time
Richmond 3.4-22
West Coast 2.3-15
Goals: Lynch, Taranto, Campbell.
A poor standard game :help. Once again we are not making the most of our inside 50s - 18-10 yet only a goal in front. We were lucky not to concede early, had the better of the middle part of the quarter, but then gave up two soft goals in the last 5 mins.
-
Terrible start to the 2nd quarter, two holding the balls against because we refuse first option. If they start to get on top they'll beAt us today
-
Dont trust the likes of ralphsmith around stoppages in the backline
-
Seen enough of Dow & Ralphsmith. Dow is just terrible and Hugo needs to harden up.
-
They’re on top. Way more pressure, won’t be surprised if we lose
-
Can our mids just stick to first option kick it forward at the centrebounce rather than handball or lazy chip until we stuff up :banghead.
-
Seen enough of Dow & Ralphsmith. Dow is just terrible and Hugo needs to harden up.
Yep only filling in until they get replaced over the next couple of years.
-
Ralphsmith really getting exposed this game.
-
Good boys Simmsy
-
Good strong pack mark in front by Sims and importantly kicks his first goal :gotigers.
28 - 29
-
Well done Sims ! Geez he has some tree trunks on him already
-
Faull is having his best game. Great follow up work
-
Poor defending by the Eagles but we'll take it. Lynch goal :gotigers
Rich 5.4-34
WCE 4.5-29
-
Getting smashed from centre clearance
-
Sensational by Sims
Be interested to see what everyone thinks of Campbell kicking that goal
-
Backline has been horrible.
-
Nice lace out pass by Sims to Lynch. Don't normally see that from a big bloke.
Campbell goal :gotigers
But then again we give it straight back :banghead.
We are getting our goals from turnovers while they are getting their easy goals from centrebounces :banghead. Our mids need to lift.
-
Disorganised again. That's the second time this quarter we didn't have someone in the ruck :facepalm.
-
Miller, Dow, Ralphsmith.
Get rid of them.
-
That’s on you Miller. Two players I really can’t stand are Miller and Ralphsmith
-
Missed chances :scream
No one front and square at our F50 contest :facepalm.
Miller :facepalm
Soft goal at the other end :banghead
-
We actually got a goal from a centrebounce today :o
Mansell finally kicks one. Better on the run. Goal! :gotigers
Rich 7.7-49]
WCE 7.5-47
-
Miller seriously needs to be dropped.
-
Half-time
Richmond 3.4 7.7-49
West Coast 2.3 7.6-48
Goals: Lynch 2, Campbell 2, Taranto, Sims, Mansell.
Lucky to be just in front. Poor skills and we're getting smacked at the centre clearances. If we were playing anyone half-decent we'd be 6 goals down. Thank goodness Broad is playing down back.

Hugo has had a mare today. Fumbled every ball.
-
Great tap from Faull to lynch. Faull showing a lot this game
-
Nank so bad. GIVE THE FIRST OPTION. Basics letting us down
-
We get the turnover and then just give it back to them :banghead.
-
Waterman unmanned. WTF ?! Defense has been unorganised and horrible
-
Banks has no idea what he’s doing
-
Our handballing has been total crap today.
Where are our small forwards and half-forwards btw? In no man's land. Not front and square to our talls, not pressing up, not manning up either :banghead.
Another soft goal to them :banghead.
-
Nank having a shocker. Dumb dumb dumb
-
Deserve to lose this really. Playing poorly.
-
Banks has no idea what he’s doing
Vanilla footballer.
-
Ralphsmith is so weak in the contest
-
Deserve to lose this really. Playing poorly.
We have a couple of VERY selfish players
-
This is soft as. Not desperate nor working hard enough.
-
In big trouble here.
Losing not the worst thing but jeez, we're not good
-
Too many players scared of the contest. Ralphsmith, banks, miller all been really poor. Dow been very average too.
-
Banks and HRS are the 2 that need to go at some stage.
Average
-
We're just crap people, accept it and come back in 4 years.
-
Mansell is good. One of few keepers we have.
-
Trainor bangs it forward to Mansell out the back who gets one against the run of play :gotigers.
Rich 9.9-63
WCE 9.11-65
Not sure how we are still this close.
-
Lalor to the hot spot and Nank marks. Goal! :gotigers
Rich 10.9-69
WCE 9.11-65
Don't deserve to be in front but we'll take it.
-
Well it’s all up to the last quarter. Will find out how bad this group wants to win
-
Are we a danger of winning a centre clearance
-
3/4 time
Richmond 3.4 7.7 10.9-69
West Coast 2.3 7.6 9.11-65
Goals: Lynch 2, Campbell 2, Mansell 2, Taranto, Sims, Brown, Nankervis.
Well that 3rd qtr was total and utter soft dross by us except for the last 5 mins. Eagles have been on top in general play since quarter time which is an indictment on us. Yze needs to give them a good old fashion blast in the huddle. Workrate and pressure should be a non-negotiable.
-
Why wasn't the ball killed on the wing boundary? :banghead
-
Against the worst fwd line in the comp our defence looks like headless chickens and that’s with plenty of experience down there.
Ditto the midfield.
-
OMG. Hugo 50 and kicks the goals.
:gotigers
Rich 11.9-75
WCE 10.12-72
-

Ditto the midfield.
Agreed, no excuses
-
Dow is so bad.
-
Trezise subbed on for Dow.
-
Watch us continually struggling to get it out of D50 while they run is out with free blokes everywhere
-
Hopefully Dow sub is a sign of things to come
-
Sims does some great things for a man his size
-
Hugo's attempt at a tackle :facepalm.
-
Yep Hugo is a disgrace to the jumper
-
Training drill from defense for them, they're back in front
-
Let's just ballwatch as they go coast to coast ::)
-
We are seriously disgraceful
-
Where are our small fwds at the drop of the ball
-
Well done Faull !!! Takes a youngster to show how to tackle
-
Great mark in the pack by Lynch.
But he shanks it :P

I knew lynch would miss that

Great run down tackle by Brown :clapping.
Match saving,
-
Sensational Tom brown. That’s what it’s all about. That’s what it means to be a tiger. Everyone else needs to follow that example
-
:phew :gotigers

Showed a bit to hang onto the win. Reality is both teams were pretty bad, but somehow we were better.
-
Great run down tackle by Brown :clapping.

Really thought we would win more comfortably than that but will bank the 4 points. Next week is massive!
-
Dow, green and ralphsmith can all be dropped imo.
-
Kelli Underwood is painful
If there’s one thing I dread after sunday football on tv it’s listening to her commentary.
-
Beautiful tackle by Brown in those dying seconds.
Thought hopper was big in the last few minutes.
Otherwise not one for the archives. Ugly game between poo sides.
-

West Coast 2.3 7.6 9.11 11.13-79

Take the win but play like that against any other side and we would get done by at least 6 goals. Those two middle quarters we were terrible. We got smacked in the centrebounces. Thhe positioning of our smalls at contests too was often in no man's land. Lots and lots still still to work on despite the win.

It was a good game of footy. And before we all starting piling in, yes they are both crap teams. I don’t understand why people feel the need to remind us / it’s captain obvious stuff.
I really liked our ball movement off the turnover. Our pressure isn’t nearly good enough to create enough turnovers against the better teams but hopefully that’s a work in progress. Winning games is so important to the cubs, 4-6 wins would be sensational this year particularly after losing 4 senior players

Agree. It was a very entertaining game.
Do people expect top tier skills from two of the worst teams in it?
-
More wins than last year already and with a supposed weaker list.

Watched the game with my Dad who is mad West Coast .
We were both at our pessimistic best , both conceding defeat at various times in the afternoon.
We have won 3 games this year - competition for spots in the team . Lots to be happy about .

AFL Report Card: Round 9
Foxsports
12 May 2025
RICHMOND
The Tigers uncomfortably scraped home at the MCG on Mother’s Day to notch their third win from nine games, and Tom Brown’s game-saving chase-down tackle on West Coast youngster Tom Gross is largely to thank. Adem Yze’s side evidently went to work on contested ball after a meagre showing in Round 8 against Hawthorn, and they were first to the ball plenty against the Eagles — finishing +13 for contested possessions. And while they struggled with West Coast’s pressure in the second half, they were also able to move the footy with relative ease in the early going.
In the votes
Not only was Brown’s game-saving act a jaw-dropper, but his game as a whole would’ve earnt admirers — posting 16 disposals, five marks, a goal and six score involvements from half-back. Sam Banks had 28 disposals at almost 90 per cent efficiency as well as five inside-50s. Nick Vlastuin and Nathan Broad were tied for a team-most nine intercepts as the Tigers defended a slender lead late in the game. Tim Taranto led the way at the coalface with a team-high 16 contested possessions. Tom Lynch booted two goals from four scoring shots and notched a team-high eight score involvements.
Room for improvement
The Tigers were belted at centre bounce, allowing West Coast to score 7.7 (49) from 16 centre clearances to the home side’s shallow 1.1 (7) from nine. They also trailed for uncontested possessions despite owning the category early in the game; they had a tougher time keeping their hands on the ball as the Eagles significantly increased their pressure as the stakes grew.

Maybe the coaches could see better than I did.
I often reserve judgement on players votes, umpiring etc until after I've seen the replay but I don't think I'll be watching this one as the standard of football was quite poor from where I was sitting on the wing/fence.
But yeah...maybe they saw more in Banks' game than I did? His stats surprised me and I agree he struggled at times.
-
Sam Banks had 25 possessions (excluding kick ins), had 5 score involvements, 1 goal assist with 89%de and gained 660 metres. Where his game was weak is in the defensive stuff, 1 tackle, 7 pressure acts and only 3 contested.
Overall, given his role off half back I would say they are very solid numbers and both coaches gave him votes so that has some sway for me
-
WC convert their chances in the third they win by at least 3-4 goals and it would've been in no small part due to some awful decisions & disposal from Banks so dunno how that translates into a near perfect game, especially given even his own coach pointed it out after the match. :shh
-
I liked that he improved, I value improvement and hope more than wins this year . He showed enough to suggest he could make it or give us a return if he chooses to go home to Tassie
Glad we didn’t lose by the way!

Remember when she burst onto the scene over a decade ago. Think she was with channel 10 or 7 and they put her on the big games for a while.
She's stuffing atrocious. Struggles with the English language and player names. Does know club colours though. Orange team
-
We completely dominated the last quarter but could not convert that dominance into scores. We were too focused on Lynch and as a result it was easier for the west coast players to defend. The delivery into the forwardline was not flash eg Banks kicking over Lynch's head and we missed some really gettable goals
We need to mix up the targets and become less predictable.
-

Will never forget in 2017 before the gws game at the MCG during the season she proceeded to say on radio that gws were our bogey team and that they had beaten us at the MCG previously

She was on Ch10, they trumpeted her being the 1st female play by play caller and how good she was and that's why she got the gig. She was terrible then and nothing has changed,
What is sad is that she's probably put female callers back a decade. There's a woman who calls AFLW on Ch7 and she's brilliant but I don't reckon there's any chance she will get a look in to call AFL games. And I reckon Underwood is the reason
-
There’s some very good female hosts and commentators but they chose Kellie ::)
