Richmond VFL go down to Roos in a thriller
By Connor Burns,
Richmond Media
18 May 2025
Despite a manic last quarter comeback, Richmond's VFL side lost to North Melbourne by two points on Sunday.
It was a feel-good day for the Tigers, with VFL captain Lachlan Street and the AFL-listed Mykelti Lefau both returning from ACL injuries.
However, it was the Roos who got the hot start, kicking the first three goals of the contest through Oliver Lowe, Cooper Harvey and Taylor Goad.
The Tigers soon responded through a brilliant finish by the returning Lefau, as players swarmed their much-loved teammate in celebration.
A second goal to Harvey late in the quarter gave North Melbourne a 19-point lead at the first break.
Tyler Sonsie got Richmond off to the perfect start in the second term, kicking a goal from 50 to give the Tigers some much-needed momentum.
Unfortunately for Richmond, it was unable to use the breeze to its advantage, kicking 1.4 for the quarter to the Roos' 1.2.
Inaccuracy continued to plague the Tigers coming out of half-time, with skill execution letting the side down. Richmond managed just 1.4 for the quarter, while late goals to Geordie Payne and Harvey gave the Roos a healthy 29-point lead heading into the last term.
The Tigers needed a big last quarter and that’s what they produced, with their game clicking late.
Campbell Gray was swung forward, and it paid immediate dividends as he kicked a goal in the first few minutes of the term. That major was followed by goals to Jasper Alger, Mohammed Yassine and Jacob Bauer as Richmond came roaring back into the contest.
When Judson Clarke kicked a goal at the 28-minute mark of the last term, the margin was back to two points and tense final minutes insured.
After several battering contests late, North Melbourne were able to hang on as it secured a two-point win in a thriller at Arden Street Oval.
Sonsie had another brilliant game, amassing 36 disposals and 10 clearances, while Tom McCarthy’s (25 disposals) stocks continue to rise.
Richmond 1.1 2.5 3.9 8.12 (60)
North Melbourne 4.2 5.4 8.8 9.8 (62)
Goals: Yassine 2, Sonsie, Lefau, Gray, Clarke, Bauer, Alger
