GWS v Richmond Preview
Andrew Slevison
SEN
29 May 2025
There is renewed hope in the GWS camp on the back of a 28-point win over Carlton last weekend.
It was a tough five-week stretch there for Adam Kingsley and his men who had lost four matches but did manage to beat the Cats in Geelong.
They celebrated captain Toby Greene’s 250th game in style by downing the Blues and it has put a spring in their step ahead of what is seen on paper as a fairly straightforward home Richmond fixture.
The Tigers were competitive in the Dreamtime clash with Essendon before eventually falling by 23 points in a game that saw them field 14 players with less than 50 games of experience.
Adem Yze’s young Tigers are coming along nicely with the likes of Sam Banks, Kane McAuliffe, Tom Brown and Kaleb Smith all showing promising signs of late.
They were able to push the Bombers for much of the night, but this presents as a completely different challenge.
When the Giants are at their best they are a high quality team and you’d expect them to peel off another win here at home.
The Tigers have won two of the past three matchups between the two clubs so there is some hope, but the Giants have the advantage with form, talent, personnel and game style and should be saluting comfortably.
Prediction: Giants by 38 points.

Tigers’ burning question: Can experience spark Tiger cubs?
The Tigers have relied upon their young guns in the early parts of 2025 and they’ve shown plenty of promise, but is now the time their old heads stand up? The Tigers are likely to be bolstered by the return of a premiership trio in Tom Lynch, Dion Prestia and Toby Nankervis this weekend for their clash against the Giants. That’s eight premiership medallions and over 600 games experience to be added to Adem Yze’s side. Not only are they stars of the game, their on-field leadership and presence will undoubtedly make the young Tiger cubs walk taller. Number one pick Sam Lalor is set for a stint on the sidelines due to a hamstring injury, while midfielder Thomson Dow will also miss an extended period with a knee issue. The young Tigers have been incredible to start the year, but now it’s time for the senior heads to steady the ship.

Sounds great WP. Have a safe trip, doubt they'll get up for us but should be nice regardless.
At least the ins are good.
Think we're a chance against Sydney...

Tigers hope to combat Giants' run
Assistant coach Ben Rutten explains how Richmond will look to stop GWS' ability to run and carry on Saturday.
By Henry Milic
RFC website
30 May 2025
As Richmond prepares to face GWS in enemy territory on Saturday, assistant coach Ben Rutten hopes his side can create opportunities on the counterattack and limit the Giants' dangerous ball movement off turnovers.
“I think for the group to get away and spend some time together and travel and perform in a different environment is a great opportunity for us,” Rutten said.
“The Giants are a really strong team, and a big threat is their turnover game.
“Their ability to get some run and carry with their handball off halfback is something that we understand is a threat, but we think we have some strategies in place to be able to nullify that and hopefully get some opportunities on the counterattack.”
Rutten had high praise for Richmond’s younger players and their ability to rise to the AFL level, however, he is still hoping the side can put together more four-quarter performances.
“Some of the real positives have been the performances of our younger guys. We have had a lot of first-year gamers this season,” Rutten said.
“We are still a little bit inconsistent through games and throughout quarters at times as well, so that is certainly something that we are aware of.
“That is certainly a big focus for us, and that’s to improve our consistency throughout games.”

Just want us to be competitive in the contest today, do the basics well especially defensively, and see continuing signs from the cubs.
-
Can't miss those Greeny. That was a sitter.
-
Green misses a sitter, not sure why he's in the team.
-
Doesn't look good for Callum Ward. Hope not but looks like an ACL.
-
Hugo up and under and Lynch takes a strong contested mark in the pocket. Goal! :gotigers
8 - 6
-
Advantage free and Timmy goals :gotigers
14 - 6
-
F50 ball-up. Nank out of the ruck hands to Prestia who goals :gotigers
Rich 3.2-20
GWS 1.0-6
-
Soft free but we'll take it. Jonty makes up for the other miss and goals :gotigers.
Rich 4.3-27
GWS 1.0-6
Excellent start.
-
How was that a free kick to Faull?
:lol :lol :lol :lol :lol :lol
Will take it ..
-
Green will get another month in the team now
-
Greeny couldn't miss that one from 1m out :gotigers
Rich 5.3-33
GWS 1.0-6
All over them :o.
-
How was that a free kick to Faull?
:lol :lol :lol :lol :lol :lol
Will take it ..
It was a joke of free. But given all the real ones we don't get we'll take it :yep.
-
We've missed 3 gettable shots too.
34 - 6
-
Hopper been good but often tries to do too much.
-
That was a sling tackle.
-
Poor advantage Sonsie. If you take you need to kick it.
-
Timmy goal after the siren :gotigers
-
Been a long time since we have had a quarter like that ! Everything went our way. GWS were horrible though
-
Quarter time
Richmond 6.5-41
GWS 2.1-13
Goals: Taranto 2, Lynch, Prestia, Faull, Green.
Arguably our best quarter of the season. Experienced midfield Taranto, Hopper and Prestia dominated. All up everyone contributed. Good signs from the cubs.
Hopefully Lynch's hand is ok :pray.
-
Doesn't look good for Callum Ward. Hope not but looks like an ACL.
Happened right in front of me. The way he grab his knee, my first thought was ACL
-
Another set shot miss (Sims). That's 4 gettable ones.
-
These misses are coming back to bite us aren't the?
-
Why the banana Dion? Should have kicked that. Another chance missed.
-
I'm eating dinner can someone update plz?
-
These misses are coming back to bite us aren't the?
There's one :scream.
-
I'm eating dinner can someone update plz?
Play in Giants forward half last 5 mins. Just kicked a goal.
45 - 20
-
Dumb kicks to no one. Need to control possession if there's no one forward.
-
The goals are between the two big posts Tiges :scream.
-
What was that kick Miller? :huh3
-
Finally! Hopper bauks, runs inside 50 and slots it home :gotigers
Rich 7.9-51
GWS 3.2-20
-
Can we get a tackling coach who teaches our players to pin the free arm?!
-
1.6 this qtr :P.
-
Can we get a tackling coach who teaches our players to pin the free arm?!
Problem with pinning the arm these days is the risk of a dangerous tackle, concussion
-
Trainor has a harder head than advertised
It was a terrible tackle
-
Half time
Richmond 6.5 7.11-53
GWS 2.1 4.3-27
Goals: Taranto 2, Lynch, Prestia, Faull, Green, Hopper.
The game evened up as that quarter went along, but we still had more than enough chances. We obviously just couldn't kick straight. We should be at least 7 goals in front. Positive is some of the cubs are stepping up. Sims was good as second ruck aside from his set shots.
-
Sims doing a great job. 4 marks 1 contested.
-
Can we get a tackling coach who teaches our players to pin the free arm?!
Problem with winning the arm these days is the risk of a dangerous tackle, concussion
That's true WP. I was more talking about where the opponent is a sitting duck to a looping handball and we tackle them in a standing position. We shouldn't be allowing them to get a handball away.

Agree 100%
-
Should be at least 7-8 goals up.
Missed some absolute sitters.
Super impressed with Sims. Clunking them just not kicking 'em

Sonsie crumbs the goal :gotigers
Rich 8.11-59
GWS 4.3-27
-
Gutsy mark by Banks.
Jonty shanks it :-\.
Another bad miss.
60 - 35
-
Ralphsmith and Green both petrified. Sad
-
Two hands Hugo you coward
-
Playing into their hands. An open sling shot game is what they want.
-
Not sure why Sims handballed it when the goal was open but fortunately Green still kicks it :gotigers.
Rich 9.12-66
GWS 6.5-41
-
Two quick ones. Great pass by McAuliffe. Lynch goal :gotigers
Rich 10.12-72
GWS 6.5-41
-
If Green was clean that would've been a goal.
-
Very scrappy.
10-15 and should be 15-10 and up by ten goals
-
Not great by Nank wrong spot.
-
Great mark Lynch.
But another gettable ones missed :scream.
-
Man 26 scoring shots to 13 to ‘only’ lead by 5 goals is nasty work. Hopefully can bring this home.
-
$8.
Worth a tenner haha
For the quarter time scoreline maybe. :shh
Shoulda coulda woulda
-
Appreciate there's a qtr to go
But take out the misses, this has been a super impressive performance 👏
-
3/4 time
Richmond 6.5 7.11 10.16-76
GWS 2.1 4.3 7.6-48
Goals: Taranto 2, Lynch 2, Green 2, Prestia, Faull, Hopper, Sonsie.
Another quarter where we could've/should've been 7-8 goals in front. Reckon we've missed at least 10 gettable ones tonight that should be kicked at this level. Aside from that we've played well.
-
Taylor made to run us down here.
-
Kmac subbed on for Trainor.
-
Another miss :banghead.
-
Again not pinning the arm which allows them to get the ball away :banghead.
-
Kicking for goal has been an absolute disgrace to be honest from league footballers.
Game should be done and dusted.
-
Fmd kmac misses too and they nail one from about 50 out
We deserve to lose just from our garbage F50 work
-
Ralphsmith and Green both petrified. Sad
Few soft efforts in the last quarter from the gun as well
He doesn’t want to go
-
A lot of dumb stuff at the moment. Need to win the game.
-
Talk about losers mentality.
-
Think of the draft picks I suppose
-
Will be filthy if we lose this one. Obviously gws are the better team but we have plenty of experience out there today. If we lose it’s on the leaders
-
We're just panicking now. Being reactive. Fumbling. Need to regain some composure. Control the ball.
-
Poor % stuff is just giving them the ball. Control it Tiges.
-
Ralphsmith and Green both petrified. Sad
Few soft efforts in the last quarter from the gun as well
He doesn’t want to go
Yep. Looking for the easy way or highlight reel
-
Poor option Nank. The Giants had the spare.
-
How many times have they had half backs out the front of the contest.
-
Why punch the ball into space in D50? :facepalm.
-
:banghead
Effen pathetic umpiring
-
pee weak by the leaders getting smashed in the contest this quarter.
Good lesson for the young blokes
-
Could see this coming a mile away.
So predictable
Terrible coaching. Should have subbed Faull off not Trainor.
Young team or not this is pathetic
-
What the stuff gray
-
Just a brainless quarter plus the missed sitters in the first 3 quarters has thrown this away.
-
Sonsie 2 times in the last trying to kick off the ground too lazy to pick it up and twice didn't even connect with the ball properly :banghead
-
Truck of chicken poo
stuff you Muppets
-
That hurt. A lot.
Not sure what to say really. Should have won but somehow didn't.
Was there an element of tanking?
Think we are just hopeless and unfit.
-
Sonsie 2 times in the last trying to kick off the ground too lazy to pick it up and twice didn't even connect with the ball properly :banghead
Sonserland. I see we have found our scapegoat
-
Hopper, Prestia. Miller. Great games.
I really liked Ralphsmiths game tonight.
-
Sims 7 marks. :clapping :clapping :clapping
-
Sonsie 2 times in the last trying to kick off the ground too lazy to pick it up and twice didn't even connect with the ball properly :banghead
Yep. Summed up that last quarter. Low % dumb crap.
The number of times at stoppages we tried to play volleyball allowing GWS to gain the ball on the outside rather than keeping it in tight and resetting.
Bombing it long to their loose numbers behind the ball when we needed to control the ball. We just kept feeding their half-backs.
Then once we fell behind, we went sideways and backwards. Geez we had to take risks then to win the game.
Add the dropped marks and fumbles and it was a pathetic last quarter. The mindset wasn't to keep what we were doing and win the game. We panicked and it cost us.
-
Agree we should have been much more offensive in the last quarter but way too defensive.
Not sure it's coaching, a losers mentality or the players are just not up to it.
-
Not that bothered with result, we will be bottom 4 so I'm watching every game wanting to see our kids improve etc.
Thought there were brilliant brilliant signs. Missing too many 4 qtr hardened bodies and some better AFL standard understanding.
We also won that if we have better accuracy in front of goal.
We aren't losing by 10+ goals and looking like a basket case. We are on the right path.
-
Reckon that was a pretty special 3qtrs. We would have learned a heap. Treat that like a win. Important not to have a let down next week vs Swans
-
I'm currently at the airport waiting to fly home and I'm gutted.
Should not have lost that game. Tried to protect the lead rather than trying to win. :banghead
1st three qtrs were great apart from the misses Could see this coming a mile away.
So predictable
Terrible coaching. Should have subbed Faull off not Trainor.
Young team or not this is pathetic
No issue with Trainor being subbed he was average.
Hugo was very good tonight not sure why he's copping some whacks
Ditto Sonsie, it was one of his better games. He wasn't the only one trying to kick it of the ground in the last. Ground was quite dewy in the last
I just hope they are all hurting like hell, they let a major opportunity slip
-
It's obvious they just ran out of legs.
Shouldn't have lost though.
Bad kicking is bad footy.
-
It's just where we're at.
Trainor was quiet, but everyone tried their guts out.
Giants beat us with a lot of their stars down and ineffectual, but had enough experience to get the job done.
-
It’s true to form, we haven’t learnt and are not fit enough to go for 4 quarters. Common for those players who havnt been able to do a full pre season or two.
They will learn and it will also give some belief .
-
Miller kept Hogan scoreless.
Real win, that is.
-
I’d rather have these types of losses now . They will learn from it . Results are really irrelevant.
You have to be proud of the effort. Can’t blame the coach for missing sitters .
You can see positives signs . There will be serious competition for spots after the bye .
I’d rather be us than most teams outside the 8 .

we lost because we missed goals.
end of story.

The fact that they only got 4 free kicks is absurd.
The umpiring was crap as usual
