GWS v Richmond Preview

Andrew Slevison
SEN
29 May 2025

There is renewed hope in the GWS camp on the back of a 28-point win over Carlton last weekend.

It was a tough stuff stretch there for Adam Kingsley and his men who had lost four matches but did manage to beat the Cats in Geelong.

They celebrated captain Toby Greene’s 250th game in style by downing the Blues and it has put a spring in their step ahead of what is seen on paper as a fairly straightforward home Richmond fixture.

The Tigers were competitive in the Dreamtime clash with Essendon before eventually falling by 23 points in a game that saw them field 14 players with less than 50 games of experience.

Adem Yze’s young Tigers are coming along nicely with the likes of Sam Banks, Kane McAuliffe, Tom Brown and Kaleb Smith all showing promising signs of late.

They were able to push the Bombers for much of the night, but this presents as a completely different challenge.

When the Giants are at their best they are a high quality team and you’d expect them to peel off another win here at home.

The Tigers have won two of the past three matchups between the two clubs so there is some hope, but the Giants have the advantage with form, talent, personnel and game style and should be saluting comfortably.

Prediction: Giants by 38 points.

Tigers’ burning question: Can experience spark Tiger cubs?

The Tigers have relied upon their young guns in the early parts of 2025 and they’ve shown plenty of promise, but is now the time their old heads stand up? The Tigers are likely to be bolstered by the return of a premiership trio in Tom Lynch, Dion Prestia and Toby Nankervis this weekend for their clash against the Giants. That’s eight premiership medallions and over 600 games experience to be added to Adem Yze’s side. Not only are they stars of the game, their on-field leadership and presence will undoubtedly make the young Tiger cubs walk taller. Number one pick Sam Lalor is set for a stint on the sidelines due to a hamstring injury, while midfielder Thomson Dow will also miss an extended period with a knee issue. The young Tigers have been incredible to start the year, but now it’s time for the senior heads to steady the ship.

Sounds great WP. Have a safe trip, doubt they'll get up for us but should be nice regardless.

At least the ins are good.

Think we're a chance against Sydney...

Tigers hope to combat Giants' run

Assistant coach Ben Rutten explains how Richmond will look to stop GWS' ability to run and carry on Saturday.

By Henry Milic
RFC website
30 May 2025

As Richmond prepares to face GWS in enemy territory on Saturday, assistant coach Ben Rutten hopes his side can create opportunities on the counterattack and limit the Giants' dangerous ball movement off turnovers.

“I think for the group to get away and spend some time together and travel and perform in a different environment is a great opportunity for us,” Rutten said.

“The Giants are a really strong team, and a big threat is their turnover game.

“Their ability to get some run and carry with their handball off halfback is something that we understand is a threat, but we think we have some strategies in place to be able to nullify that and hopefully get some opportunities on the counterattack.”

Rutten had high praise for Richmond’s younger players and their ability to rise to the AFL level, however, he is still hoping the side can put together more four-quarter performances.

“Some of the real positives have been the performances of our younger guys. We have had a lot of first-year gamers this season,” Rutten said.

“We are still a little bit inconsistent through games and throughout quarters at times as well, so that is certainly something that we are aware of.

“That is certainly a big focus for us, and that’s to improve our consistency throughout games.”

Quarter time

Richmond   6.5-41
GWS          2.1-13

Goals: Taranto 2, Lynch, Prestia, Faull, Green.

Arguably our best quarter of the season. Experienced midfield Taranto, Hopper and Prestia dominated. All up everyone contributed. Good signs from the cubs.

Hopefully Lynch's hand is ok  :pray.

Half time

Richmond   6.5    7.11-53
GWS          2.1     4.3-27

Goals: Taranto 2, Lynch, Prestia, Faull, Green, Hopper.

The game evened up as that quarter went along, but we still had more than enough chances. We obviously just couldn't kick straight. We should be at least 7 goals in front. Positive is some of the cubs are stepping up. Sims was good as second ruck aside from his set shots.

That's true WP. I was more talking about where the opponent is a sitting duck to a looping handball and we tackle them in a standing position. We shouldn't be allowing them to get a handball away.

GWS          2.1     4.3      7.6-48

Goals: Taranto 2, Lynch 2, Green 2, Prestia, Faull, Hopper, Sonsie.

Another quarter where we could've/should've been 7-8 goals in front. Reckon we've missed at least 10 gettable ones tonight that should be kicked at this level. Aside from that we've played well.

Yep. Summed up that last quarter. Low % dumb crap.

The number of times at stoppages we tried to play volleyball allowing GWS to gain the ball on the outside rather than keeping it in tight and resetting.
Bombing it long to their loose numbers behind the ball when we needed to control the ball. We just kept feeding their half-backs.
Then once we fell behind, we went sideways and backwards. Geez we had to take risks then to win the game.

Add the dropped marks and fumbles and it was a pathetic last quarter. The mindset wasn't to keep what we were doing and win the game. We panicked and it cost us.

Not that bothered with result, we will be bottom 4 so I'm watching every game wanting to see our kids improve etc.

Thought there were brilliant brilliant signs. Missing too many 4 qtr hardened bodies and some better AFL standard understanding.

We also won that if we have better accuracy in front of goal.

We aren't losing by 10+ goals and looking like a basket case. We are on the right path.

No issue with Trainor being subbed he was average.

Hugo was very good tonight not sure why he's copping some whacks

Ditto Sonsie,  it was one of his better games. He wasn't the only one trying to kick it of the ground in the last. Ground was quite dewy in the last

I’d rather have these types of losses now . They will learn from it . Results are really irrelevant.

You have to be proud of the effort. Can’t blame the coach for missing sitters .

You can see positives signs . There will be serious competition for spots after the bye .

I’d rather be us than most teams outside the 8 .

I know we are all disappointed after yesterday’s loss …but there was a lot to like . Watching the first 3 quarters it kinda felt like a watershed moment , like we had turned a corner.

I’m not saying the Hawthorn rebuild is the optimal model to follow . They have certainly hit a road block recently and don’t look like a top 4 team at the moment.

However it wasn’t that long ago that the Hawks were losing the unloseable. We came back from a 5 goal deficit against them . They coughed up 2 goals in the final minute against Port .
Then it miraculously just clicked for them and they went on a golden run.

I’m really excited for what’s install after the bye . We are going to see tweaks to this team and a glimpse of what our best 22 might look like in 2026 .

For memory GWS was on 4 frees at 3qtr time

But forget the count for a minute

In the last qtr Tim T was held the controlling ump called play on, the non controlling ump Eleni was looking straight it and just stood there like a stunned mullet. That's pathetic umpiring

Overall in the last it seemd they out their collective whistles away except for calling for ball ups... it was shocking

The Tigers have the midfield muscle to power their rebuild

Richmond was on track to give the clearest indication yet that its rebuild is racing ahead of schedule until coming to a grinding halt against an inspired Greater Western Sydney on Saturday. The Tigers had built as much as a 34-point lead off the back of a stoppage and territory dominance that finished as 42-29 clearances and 61-50 inside 50s, despite the three-point defeat at Engie Stadium. The clash with the Giants was just the third time the Tigers have won each count this season and it was no coincidence that the improvement came with Dion Prestia returning for his first game of the year to partner Tim Taranto and Jacob Hopper in an experienced onball brigade. The Tigers might be young at both ends of the field but with the trio of gun midfielders working away at the feet of skipper Toby Nankervis a strong foundation is in place for their rapid rebound.

Absolutely agree we were gifted goals thanks to some ordinary decisions

And I'm not complaining, it's about time we gotten rub of the green

But in the last quarter the umps lost the plot for both sides, whistles disappeared and blatant frees were not paid, that's pathetic umpiring whichever way you look at it.

AFL Report Card - Round 12

Ben Cotton, Will Faulkner Catherine Healey and Jack Jovanovski
Foxsports
2 June 2025

RICHMOND

A heartbreaker for Tigers fans, who would’ve come away devastated after their side conceded five unanswered goals in the final term to lose by three points after leading by 28 at the final change. Richmond dominated for the vast majority of the match, posting 61 inside-50s — especially impressive given its season average is just 45.7 — to GWS’ 50. Adem Yze’s side excruciatingly led for 110 minutes on Saturday afternoon but fell behind at the 25-minute mark of the last, courtesy of a Callum Brown major.

In the votes

Jacob Hopper was instrumental against his former side, notching 29 disposals, a goal and a whopping match-high 13 clearances — including seven from centre bounce. Dion Prestia was also magnificent in his first senior appearance of the season, racking up 31 disposals, a goal, seven clearances and a team-high nine score involvements. Tim Taranto, also playing against former teammates, booted an equal-team-high two goals to go with 23 disposals and five clearances in a typical hard-nosed effort.

Room for improvement

Failure to produce a four-quarter effort. Richmond had the hosts on the ropes but were simply unable to capitalise on the bevy of forward-half chances they created, kicking 10.17 including 3.6 in the second half. The Tigers were also -43 for uncontested possessions.

Grade

B+

Can the Tigers be winners despite losing?

By Jaiden Sciberras
SEN
2 June 2025

The Tigers should have walked away with an incredible scalp over the Giants, leading for almost 90 per cent of the contest before being mowed down extremely late on.

A five-goal-to-none final term wrapped up the game for GWS, however the Tigers' early dominance will leave fans and players with a wealth of confidence.

“Richmond, how good has some of their football been,” Nathan Buckley continued.

“If I’m a Richmond supporter, I’m getting much more than I expected. Some of their young players that have got no right…

“If they had any depth or substance at all up top, they probably wouldn’t be playing for another 18 months, they’re throwing them in and they’re having a crack.

“I think Adem Yze and his staff, and the club itself deserves a bit of credit for what we’re seeing.”

Despite failing to return home with the four points, the Tigers will head back to Melbourne with an influx of confidence.
