When you dig a bit deeper, this contest is much more intriguing than it appears to the naked eye.

A rebuilding Richmond and a regenerating Essendon meet at the MCG in an out-and-out dead rubber when it comes to the ladder (unless of course West Coast can win a few more games).

But there is a bit to play for with both groups of players desperately wanting a win given the circumstances.

The Tigers sit 17th with a 3-13 record and after a good patch of form have been beaten by 44, 79, 68 and 72 points across the last four weeks. They haven’t won since Round 9.

The Bombers, 13th at 6-9, have lost five in a row including 95, 41 and 41-point defeats in their last three.

That situation alone makes this a fairly fascinating fixture. Throw in the mounting injuries at both clubs and there is plenty of intrigue centred around the youngsters.

On a head-to-head basis, the Bombers have saluted three times in a row dating back to the drought-breaking 2023 Dreamtime win plus a 23-point triumph in Round 11 this year.

Given there is a severe lack of experience up forward for the Tigers, you get the feeling that it will be tough for them to kick a winning score. Adem Yze’s side has failed to kick 80 or more in their past seven while conceding 100 or more in three straight.

Brad Scott’s Bombers have been similarly poor defensively and only a little more consistent with their scoring profile. But they should see this through with gun mids Zach Merrett and Nic Martin - who dominated Dreamtime - set to be a handful again.

Prediction: Essendon by 18 points.

6 more inside 50s but our lack of connection between mids and forwards hurts us. More on the forwards tonight. Need to be more proactive and lead up at the kicker. Not be on their heels ballwatching and left 5-10m behind their direct opponent.

We need to recruit some players with speed and creativity and evasiveness.

As for the game, it was shocking but a positive is we won. Could have just turned up our toes but we didn't this week

Thought Faull was very good. Reckon that goal in the last will give him some confidence. Actually not surprised he kicked it, zero pressure on him as he's been missing sitters, so no one would given him a chance

Shout out to Tylar Young, I've been highly critical but thought he was good. Once he found his feet and got up with the tempo of the game he was very solid along with Miller

Disappointing game from Mansell, backed to his bad habit of going MIA. So frustrating.

But the most disappointing for me was Sims. He was basically non competitive in the ruck against Goldstein. Refused to chase and a few times didn't even bother contesting.

I am no fan of the "forgotten man" Kosi but at least he competed, granted more often than not he was badly beaten. But i didnt think for a second he wasn't trying, competing. Sadly can't say the same about young Tom.

The backline really stood up . Miller is now our best key defender and anyone who thinks otherwise doesnt watch any Richmond games .
Young was great and can play at the level .

Hotton gave a glimpse of what he’s going to be .

Im so pleased for Jonty Faull that he kicked that clutch goal . I think he’s going to be a serious player- just neeeds time .

I didn't notice him so much in this game as I was lost in the matrix of discontent contemplating existence after watching 3 quarters :help

I can't remember which game, but I remember saying something about him a few weeks back. i saw signs he was acting lazy and wanted other players to do the work for him.

Anyway, it's not a great sign that he's repeatedly doing this, like I said last time, nip it in the bud now before it's too late. it's for his own good and development.

RICHMOND

There’s a saying that sometimes it doesn’t matter how you get the four points. That couldn’t ring more true for the Tigers as they outlasted Essendon by nine points at the MCG in a dour affair 46-37. No matter, a win’s a win and sometimes that’s all a young group needs and learning to win ugly. With it, Richmond claimed its fourth victory of the season to all but ensure it won’t finish on the bottom of the ladder.

In the votes

Tim Taranto was a shining light in the midfield with a game-high 34 touches plus a goal to lead the Tigers in the trenches. Jayden Short (24 disposals, 10 marks, one goal) had instant impact in his first game back in the AFL side, while Nick Vlaustin (23 touches, eight marks) was a brick wall in defence as Richmond celebrated his 250th game in style.

Room for improvement

Full credit to the Tigers’ for their daring approach and will at the contest. It was mainly the execution side of things where they struggled including several sloppy mistakes and skill errors, while 46 points marked their third-lowest score for the season.
