Gold Coast v Richmond Preview
Lachlan Geleit
SEN
31 July 2025
Damien Hardwick welcomes his former club Richmond to Gold Coast this Saturday, and the Suns will be feeling pretty good about themselves.
Gold Coast had perhaps their most impressive win in club history last weekend, beating their big brother Brisbane by 66 points in a home Q-Clash.
The victory signalled that the Suns are finally ready to break their finals duck as they enter Round 21 with a 12-6 record.
While they’re playing some good footy, they must keep winning to begin securing a top eight spot as they’re only a game ahead of ninth despite having an extra match in hand.
Looking at their opposition, Richmond would be pleased with their performance in Round 20 despite going down to Collingwood by 36 points.
The defeat to the ladder-leaders was expected, and Tigers fans would have been happy to see how well the side appeared to hold up defensively.
Richmond won their previous two games before that loss, and are genuinely improving in the back end of the season despite entering this match in 16th with a 5-14 record. In a season all about youth development, Richmond fans have something to smile about.
Even though the Tigers have been impressive across their last three games, this is surely too tall a task up against a Gold Coast side that’s red-hot.
Gold Coast’s midfield is far too strong and Noah Anderson should look at this game as a real chance to make a Brownlow push given the Tigers allowed Nick Daicos to do as he pleased last weekend.
Gold Coast’s forwards will get far more opportunities than Richmond’s, if they’re even slightly efficient, they should win comfortably.
Prediction: Gold Coast by 42 points.

We’re pretty tall going into this game.
Nank, Sims, Balta, Faull, Miller, Young, Armstrong
Surely the plan is to sub one, likely Armstrong you’d think.
I think there’s 1 too many talls fwd.
Balta should be playing Sims’ role

Nank ruck.
Faull, Armstrong, Sims all forward.
Balta, Miller, Young all back. Trainor maybe.
Sounds good to me. I'm keep to see this setup. This could realistically be our key position setup for the next 10+ years (forward) and 5-10 years (back).
-
Balta back makes sense although he is listed CHF

Richmond coach Adem Yze is excited to watch the Tigers’ young forward line hit the field in Saturday’s clash with the Gold Coast Suns.
With Harry Armstrong returning to the seniors for the first time since Round 4, it means Richmond’s attacking half will consist of four draftees – Armstrong, Taj Hotton, Jonty Faull and Tom Sims.
Yze is hopeful the match against Gold Coast is the start of something special, as the Tigers continue to move strongly on their exciting journey into the future.
“It's the first time we're going to see Jonty and Harry play together, with Simsy, and Taj in the same forward line,” Yze said.
“We're going to be really young in the front end, but at the same time, it's going to be really exciting.
“We can't wait to see them running out there together and start that combination, and hopefully they can be playing for this footy club for a long time, and create a bit of synergy down there that would make us really hard to play against for a long time.”

Don’t think there is any FA coverage on Saturdays anymore. Atleast in the H&A season.

It will be on Kayo, Andyy. As Simonator said, they'll cross over once the Melb vs Eagles game is finished.

Start the game with a brainfade when we had the ball. Young no awareness :facepalm.
-
Short, there was no need to do that!
0 - 6
-
Two 360 tackles and not HTB.
-
Geez, surely that’s in the back against Long.
-
Frees: 1 - 5 ::)
-
A heap of space yet no one lead up at Mansell.
-
Young seems to have reverted back to his pre acl form
-
Let's keep kicking it straight to Suns players :banghead.
-
Should be a team rule, don’t let hopper kick in transition
-
Why isn’t Ross tagging Rowell? Are they waiting for him to dominate us for a half first?
-
Both their goals have come off our brainfades :banghead.
-
Faull injured ?
-
How was that not HTB against Anderson? Seriously!!! ::)
-
Ross getting absolutely towelled up
-
Faull looks like he’s hurt ankle or knee I think.
Probably end of season.
-
Faull injured ?
Yep. About to be subbed off.
Another tall we've lost :P
-
#FreeKickGoldCoast
-
Green pressure been good
-
Balta needed to call Campbell out. That was a simple mark for Noah.
-
They are just better everywhere. Period.
-
Balta needed to call Campbell out. That was a simple mark for Noah.
Unfortunately, Balta didn't know that's what he should do. :help
Common theme :rollin
-
Green and Campbell lively up forward and that is it. Big problem ⁸
-
Bugger me, the umpires are shocking for us….
-
Quarter time
Richmond 0.1-1
Gold Coast 4.1-25
Getting owned at the stoppages :help.
It doesn't help either when the umps don't pay us clear frees ::).
Losing Faull is a big loss structurally when we go forward. Touchwood, let's hope it's not a serious injury :-\ :pray.
-
If Faull has done acl or pcl I’ll spew
-
Balta needed to call Campbell out. That was a simple mark for Noah.
Unfortunately, Balta didn't know that's what he should do. :help
Common theme :rollin
He's not a forward. He doesn't have a forward's nous.
-
If Faull has done acl or pcl I’ll spew
the faull mark not paid , talk about arm chopping 101
-
If Faull has done acl or pcl I’ll spew
Yze said Faull has "tweaked his knee". Didn't say what exactly the injury is. If it's an ACL I'll be gutted :(.
-
Rioli needs to lift.
-
What was that, 5 tackles in a row where we don’t pin the arm ? Basic stuff
-
Got an opponent cold and you don't pin the arm :facepalm.
Edit: Beat me to it, Simonator. Our poor tackling technique is the worst in the AFL.
-
Massive difference in core strength.
We can't stick s tackle.
-
So they are allowed two players on the mark are they ump and no 50? ::)
-
Floss pushed forward to mark. But misses left.
2 - 33
-
Mistackle after mistackle. Rowell's big body and core strength you can at least understand, but even their flankers are breaking free.
Young running over the footy just then was poor too.
-
Campbell to Balta 50 out. Sprays it and it hits the point post :P.
Looked like it held up in the breeze too.
-
Nice rugby throw, hey ump ::)
-
Balta has been atrocious
-
Geez Ross is lazy and never chases!
-
Rioli is having a shocker. Balta is a complete liability at the moment
-
Our key position player can't take marks. :help
-
Effort is there. Just completely outclassed as we have been on most occasions this year.
Shows how bad we need lynch just to make a contest
-
At that end, you've got to start on the left post and let it swing right.
-
Trainor was touted as having excellent disposal. He has been yet to show that at afl level
-
What kick was that Shorty? :P
-
FMD this goal kicking or lack of is so hard to watch
-
Hotton just has footy smarts. That tap on to Ross. Who unselfishly centres is back to Mansell.
Mansell another miss.
We've had the last 5 shots for three points and two OOTF :banghead
5 - 34
-
Soft late goal to them. First we allow the ball over the HF contest. Then Floss who has been our best ran over the ball and no teammate was backing up.
-
Mansell miss was very costly and wasted a really chance. Not good enough.
-
Half-time
Richmond 0.1 0.5-5
Gold Coast 4.1 6.5-41
Thought our last 10 mins was reasonable. We had more than enough our chances. But we didn't put it on the scoreboard despite 5 shots and then we cough up a soft goal with less than a minute to play :scream.
Not kicking a goal in a half is pretty ordinary :help.
-
If Faull has done acl or pcl I’ll spew
Yze said Faull has "tweaked his knee". Didn't say what exactly the injury is. If it's an ACL I'll be gutted :(.
They put him on the big screen after he was subbed off
Looked totally dejected, so that makes you think it's bad
-
You just knew that late goal was coming.
This is a tough watch .

If it's from the marking contest when he was 3 out I don't think it's an ACL.
He didn't look sore enough to me tbh.
I'm hoping he's just feeling dejected because he's not playing. You can see the passion in this kid.

He didn’t have the immediate reaction in the contest. Whatever it is will be season done though

Gutted if so, WP :'(. As a young first year KPF he has been a bright point.
-
Rioli can’t play midfield. He’s no where near it
-
Well done Armstrong. Our only fwd who can kick lol
-
Top mark by Harry. And Goal! :gotigers
Rich 1.5-11
GC 6.6-42
-
Geez we make it easy for the opposition with our schoolboy errors.
-
Balta has lost the plot. Needs to restart this off season
-
Ross in the midfield is embarrassing
-
Dumb by Young. Not only giving away the free but then switching off so the Sun player could run past and take the advantage.
Interesting to see if Hopper is ok for next week after copping that high knock :-\.
-
Ross in the midfield is embarrassing
Decision making has been terrible.
-
Campbell looked like in two minds with that kick. That was more a pass kick when he should have just gone for goal. Balta can't hang on to it on the line.
12 - 56
-
Trainor gets pinged and should have more awareness then, but Short's fumble caused that.
As for no free for Rioli on the wing ::).
-
Rowell has monstered Ross. He monsters pretty much everyone but Ross just looks helpless
-
We went from the team with the best footy brain and gameplan in the league to the team with the one of the worst game styles and the least basic skills.
Missed tackles, missed basic marks, missed basic handpasses, missed kicks (Short the worst).
It's been a massive fall
Yeh, I know the youth, blah blah blah.
There's no excuse for basic skill execution. NONE!
:help
Our older players the worst of the lot. :help
-
Tell me our backline didn’t look better when Short was out. It’s always 1 player short when he’s back there.
-
Geez Dion. 20m out and hits the post :P.
Good to see Hotton at the centrebounce that lead to it.
-
Short again kicking it to a one on one when there's free players all over the place. :banghead
-
Tell me our backline didn’t look better when Short was out. It’s always 1 player short when he’s back there.
Don’t see this backline working with short and banks. Cant have 2 defensive liabilities
-
Flood gates have come off their hinges
-
Tell me our backline didn’t look better when Short was out. It’s always 1 player short when he’s back there.
Players who go to ground so easily in the contest are defence killers as you end up a man down. That's 3 times Short has gone to ground this quarter. Not good enough from a senior player.
-
Tell me our backline didn’t look better when Short was out. It’s always 1 player short when he’s back there.
:clapping :clapping :clapping
-
Mansell misses again.
1.8 = amateur hour! :banghead
-
You just have to laugh
-
Mansell misses again.
1.8 = amateur hour! :banghead
Mansell is a deadset dud
-
I reckon we trade Short at the end of the year.
-
Our decision making going inside F50 has been terrible today. Rioli had the opportunity to give the ball by hand to one of two Tigers overlapping and he just goes the bomb to outnumbered single forward.
-
That was the ump's fault. The ump is meant to run backwards out of the circle after bouncing it; not stand there in the way of the ball ::).
-
3/4 time
Richmond 0.1 0.5 1.8-14
Gold Coast 4.1 6.5 11.9-75
Goal: Armstrong
Bruise free footy plus amateur goal point kicking. No surprise we are being outclassed but no excuse for not doing the basics well enough.
-
Balta has lost the plot. Needs to restart this off season
Throw in berating his team-mates ...considering how pathetic he's been tonight. He has no right to be berating anyone
-
When Hotton misses you know we are off.
Can someone on the bench tell our players to start by aiming for left goal post at that end and the breeze is pushing it right?
-
Short makes a habit of defending grass and lets opposition players run past to take uncontested marks.
-
Hard to kick goals when you have a mark on F50 with an open forward line and you handball and handball sideways until you turn it over :facepalm
-
With still 12 mins to go, this could end up 100 pts :help.
That was woeful defending.
-
Now Armstrong misses :P.
1.10 :P
-
Make that 1.11 :P
-
1.11 is just disgraceful, no excuses other than poorly skilled
Players. Thats the simple truth
-
Embarrassing us now :help.
-
Shame this wasn’t played at Marvel stadium!
-
1.11 is just disgraceful, no excuses other than poorly skilled
Players. Thats the simple truth
Our field disposal, decision making and so-called defending has matched it. Just a woeful 'effort' all round.
-
36 tackles after hardly laying one v Collingwood
-
Worst performance for the year comfortably
-
Stop the clock, Nank took a contested mark!
-
Worst performance for the year comfortably
I disagree. Efforts been there just no skill and outclassed. We need to get to the point where our major ball winners have skill and class. Lalor, Hotton, Smillie have all displayed that at the level below, hopefully it’s them. But that’s gonna take time
Banks has shown a bit this year but no room for both him and short.
Brown needs to find more of the ball
Guys like mansell are just such battlers. Gives his all but he’s just battler, no class
This version of mansell is basically Castagna
-
Mansell finally kicks one with one minute to go.
23 - 101
-

-
Sums up our day. Out again on the wing and the handball (Sonsie) is poor at his teammate's feet which brings the Suns in and we lose the ball.
-
Our worst three players votes.
1 Noah Balta :banghead
2 Jayden Short :banghead :banghead
3 Toby Nankervis :banghead :banghead :banghead
-
Final Score
Richmond 0.1 0.5 1.8 2.11-23
Gold Coast 4.1 6.5 11.9 16.11-107
Goal: Armstrong, Mansell
Hard to find any positives. Happy to see Hotton's cameo in the midfield in the second half but even he missed a gettable shot.
-
Positive Armstrong got through the game.
-
Hotton looked more comfortable too. That’s all I’ve got

Just knew it was going to be a shocker when we didn't get a free early in the 1st when umpire 37 who was less than 10 metres away didn't pay a free when I think it was Faull copped a foot to the back of the head while on the ground. Ump 37 just stood there like a statue while the controlling umpire came in form 15 metres away and said ball up
Umpiring was pathetic

Yeah they really evened up the ledge after sticking the knife in during the first quarter.
I'm not surprised by the late blow out but actually thought they fought hard to stay competitive for 2.5+ quarters, despite being so inaccurate in front of goal.
-
Another game into the kids . Long season. All teams - even top 8 teams are having mulligans this time of year.
Just hope Jonty isn’t too bad and he’s back for pre season. He’s been awesome.
-
The Tigers have rightfully been lauded in 2025, but Saturday was ugly.

Well we are a poor team and have 14 on the injury list
-
Sensational journalism once again. It's the suns and it's their home deck.
I watched all of one quarter and that was enough. Other than watching the kids and the odd oldie putting in a blinder nothing good is coming from this year.
That said put in something like that against the rabble saints im sure we won't be so forgiving.

AFL Report Card: Round 21
Ben Waterworth and Dylan Bolch
Foxsports
4 Aug 2025
RICHMOND
Coach Adem Yze conceded the performance against the Suns was “probably a step backwards”, but the Tigers certainly have a lot to be proud of this year. They continue to get valuable experience into their plethora of young talent and Yze’s Tiger cubs would have learned plenty from playing against some of the best players in the competition. It’s tough to find too many positives out of an 84-point loss, but it’s about the bigger picture for the Tigers.
In the votes
Nick Vlastuin battled valiantly with 20 touches and eight marks and could be in line for a maiden All-Australian blazer this year. Sam Banks had 26 disposals and has been a shining light for the Tigers this year. The Tigers tried a few different names through the midfield too at different stages.
Room for improvement
The Tigers were never really in the contest after a goalless first half. The Suns flexed their muscles in a big way dominating all the key stats. Losing the inside 50 count by 22, the clearances by 13 and contested possession by 24 would have been some of the more alarming things for Yze and his coaching staff. Unfortunately Jonty Faull’s season looks over too after suffering a knee injury. Tom Lynch looms as a straight swap.
