North Melbourne v Richmond Preview
Luke Mathews
SEN
15 Aug 2025
Both North Melbourne and Richmond will be looking to close out their season with one final win and avoid a dreaded bottom two finish.
The Kangaroos have been one of the most disappointing sides in 2025 with just four wins and are currently 17th. Despite bringing in plenty of experience during the off-season, the Shinboners thought this would be the year they would finally start to climb the ladder. It has proved to be anything but.
They were never really in the game last week against the Giants, going down by 54 points. Luke Parker had one of his better games in royal blue and white by collecting 29 disposals and kicking a goal while Colby McKercher’s excellent end to 2025 continued with 27 disposals and one goal.
Sunday’s match is the Roos’ best chance to claim four points for a while, with their last win coming against Carlton in Round 15. Richmond is one of the only teams that North has a reasonable record against in recent times, having won three of their last four dating back to 2022.
Despite having very low expectations entering the season, the Tigers have had a promising year, winning five matches and losing three by under a goal to currently sit 16th. Although a loss to the Kangaroos would drop them down to 17th, it wouldn’t change their draft hand with the Tigers currently holding North’s first-round pick.
The Tigers, amid some massive defeats, continue to show plenty of fight to end the season, highlighted by a four-point loss to St Kilda at the MCG last weekend. Jack Ross and Rhyan Mansell stood up in a side littered with kids, with Ross finishing with 26 touches while Mansell booted two goals from his 17 disposals.
Adem Yze will be hoping to see more improvement from his budding stars Taj Hotton and Harry Armstrong which the club can build on in 2026.
While a win will mean a lot more to North Melbourne, Richmond’s form has been much better in recent weeks and looks like they could hand the Kangaroos their eighth defeat in a row.
Prediction: Richmond by 15 points.

North Melbourne coach Alastair Clarkson dismissed the idea the winner of Sunday’s clash in Hobart against fellow battlers Richmond would come out as the team closer to a surge up the ladder.
Instead he referenced the “seven or eight year” build of the Brisbane Lions, the reigning premiers, “from the bottom of the ladder to the top” as an example of the long road still ahead of both clubs.
Clarkson would hope his Kangaroos are more competitive by then, having won just four games in 2025, one less than the Tigers who would arguably be a step behind in their youth-led rebuild.
But the premiership winning coach said wins were not the only metric, and only time would tell whether North was on the track to success, and whether they would get there before Richmond.
“I know that’s a sexy story, but we are both on the same journeys,” he said of the two clubs.
“What excites us is sides like Adelaide have been on the same journey as us, the Brisbane Lions, same journey, and Adelaide are on top of the ladder and looking really good.
“Brisbane took seven or eight years to get from the bottom to the top.
“We know what the formula is, but it’s a difficult track and there’s no guarantee you are ever going to get there. What we can guarantee is we are trying out best to get there. “Everyone would like to thing whoever wins this game is on track to get there a little bit quicker, but it’s over along journey rather than a short one.”

Correct, there is a real chance we will get sleet and possibly snow. You’ll need to rug up, that’s for sure!

Free hit today. C'mon Tigers.
-
Typical sucker punch goal to Norf ::).
Asleep at their kick-in.
-
Loose as so far :banghead.

How was that not within the 10m protected area?

That's better Tiger Tom :gotigers

Kmac to Ross out of the centre and Lynch marks it again this time 10m out. Goal! :gotigers

Lynchy looks on today.
Yep. Helps that Norf's key defenders are crap.
-
Nice hands from Hotton. Kmac inside 50 to Mansell 45 out. Good kick. Goal! :gotigers
Rich 3.1-19
NM 1.1-7
-
Dumb Dion. It was our free and you don't have the mobility anymore to run around opponents.
-
Pin the bloody arm in the tackle Tiges :scream.
-
Lynch should have marked that.
And again we don't pin the arm. They can't handball it away if you pin the arm. Basics Tiges! :banghead
-
That was a soft goal to concede. Some terrible 'efforts' in D50.
-
We are worst tackling club technique wise. We have opponents caught cold and yet we just allow them to easily get a handball away.
-
Well done Trezise. Deserved that goal from the desperation to get to the marking contest :gotigers.
Rich 4.2-26
NM 2.4-16
-
This has been an umpiring stitch up so far
If I was a Norf supporter, I'd be fuming
-
Kmac won't want to see that 'effort' again on the wing.
Lucky they are missing.
-
Quarter time
Richmond 4.2-26
North Melb. 2.7-19
Goals: Lynch 2, Mansell, Trezise.
Lynch show has us in front. Otherwise, Norf had the better of general play.
-
Kmac won't want to see that 'effort' again on the wing.
Lucky they are missing.
Wasn't a lack of effort and insinuating otherwise insults a player who can be criticised for many things, but obviously not a lack of "effort"
He ran a wrong angle, simple as that .. wasn't real clever, that's for sure

He's been a brave servant for us for a decade but in that specific contest he was brushed off and worst of all went to ground too easily.
-
First KMac is done.
Second. The ease that the kangas are waltzing through the middle does not bode well for todays results
-
Getting chopped up in the midfield.
Seth had to go then.
-
Can we protect the defensive of the stoppage, Tiges? Norf mids just waltzing out the front.
-
Getting chopped up in the midfield.

He very rarely goes when he has to
Does the flash things, and thats what he is

Nice goal Maurice :gotigers
Rich 5.3-33

Trezise playing 1940s collision footy in the last 5 mins :o.
-
What's with these idiotic handballs? :banghead
-
For the lynch smoother. Isn't the guy supposed to stand there until the ump says play on?
Under the new stupid rules
-
Just lucky. Another aimless bomb inside 50. Balta crumbs his own ball and goals :gotigers.
Rich 6.3-39
NM 5.9-39
-
Change something in the middle. Getting destroyed
-
Vlas injury looked horrible .. hopefully it isnt a 2026 problem
-
That landing didn't look good for Floss. Ankle or knee injury as his leg got caught underneath him like what happened to Zurhaar.
-
Geez we lack tackling pressure or technique
Just can't stick them.
-
Being down by 8 is a minor miracle
They've dominated every aspect of the game .. it's been pathetic
-
Geez we lack tackling pressure or technique
Just can't stick them.
Yep we're hopeless tacklers. It's a club problem. All our teams are terrible at tackling. Need to a proper tackling coach down to Punt Rd over the summer. Even borrow one of the Storm boys down the road to teach us.

Half time
Richmond 4.2 6.3-39

Agree Damo. Pathetic quarter and very very lucky to be just 8 points down. Starts in the middle. Owned. Can someone pick up an opponent. Sheezel with 28 disposals to half-time. On track for 50 plus :help.
-
"Sheezel with 28 disposals to half-time"
Woah
-
Prestia, TT and Hopper getting their pants pulled down.
I’ve said it before TT and Hopper may be having good individual seasons, but the 1st half is one of numerous examples where we get absolutely killed in the middle.

Floss subbed out with an ankle injury according to Fox Footy.
-
A lesson in how not to enter your F50 :facepalm.
-
That was sitter Tom.
41 - 47
-
Frustrating game to watch.
-
How many times has a Tiger gone to ground in the loose ball contest? Keep your freaking feet :banghead
And they punish us for our misses this qtr :banghead.
-
Frustrating game to watch.
Yep. We get first hands and we just cough it up.
-
Trainor out for green hammy
.
Reckon this kid has played enough, should have just been iced for the year tbh. Been sore and ordinary for weeks.
-
Embarrassing now
-
17 points now.
Games nearly done.
-
Can Prestia have a f.... Look before he kicks it.
Far out
-
FFS 4 behinds this quarter and most of the shots have been gettable :banghead.
-
Hopper too stupid to handball kicks it straight into his opponent.
-
Some deplorable defensive efforts
-
Miller, why would you keep it in play and not rush that through? Seriously! :facepalm
-
Game over now
Just finish the season FFS
Give us a priority pick.
Kangas are shizen yet we make them look like superstars.
That's what happens when you offer zero pressure around the ball.
Pack of losers.
-
Priority pick? lol
-
Game over!
5 goals from just 7 entries to Norf this quarter. We've just given up.
-
Should have been down 6 goals at half time
This is just them putting it on the board now
Embarrassing, insipid, gutless
-
Priority pick? lol
:lol :lol :lol :lol :lol :lol
-
Campbell goal.
49 - 77
-
The only positive is it shows where we are at in our rebuild in comparison. Media chatter saying both clubs were in the same rebuild spot is nonsense. Norf have underperformed this year. Should have reached 8 wins this season. Norf is more advanced than our rebuild with their midfield set for the next decade. They've been rebuilding for the past 8 years. It's the bookends especially down back that they are still missing. Whereas we are only at the start of ours and drafted a number of young talls in last year's draft and only in this year's draft will we focus on bringing in young mids with leg speed.
-
Cue in the rack today. Hate to think what Geelong will do to us next week. Telstra Dome game on repeat :help.
-
Embarrassing

Disgraceful showing of skill, or lack of
-
Really need Adelaide to win v north next week.
Hopefully they don't take it easy pre finals.
Danger game cause they have 1st knocked up
-
It's actually been a better than expected year.
But going forward I don't want to see our main CBA set up have Prestia, Hopper and Taranto again. Which may mean we may be worse next year but I'd much rather see our next crop of boys spend the majority of time in there.
If we are going to lose to the 3rd bottom side I want to see kids getting priority development.
-
Really need Adelaide to win v north next week.
Hopefully they don't take it easy pre finals.
Danger game cause they have 1st knocked up
Geelong would jump them if they win their last 2 ( v Sydney and us) and crows drop the game next week.
-
Excellent by Sonsie. Can't stuff around anymore give him a good solid consistent run at it next year.
-
Nothing excuses the lack of pressure
Nothing.
Boys should hand back their pay check after that quarter.
Laughable

He isn't hard enough at it.
Don't owe him any development next season sir he's still in the list
-
our prime midfielders showing their true colours again.. smashed in clearances and there no excuse at all.
Taranto hopper and Prestia are just not good enough
-
Excellent by Sonsie. Can't stuff around anymore give him a good solid consistent run at it next year.
1 kick and 4 handballs towards half time for sonsie too
-
Just stuff off Yze u clueless dud and take Prestia, McIntosh, Trezise, Ralphsmith and Sonsie with you
-
3/4 time
Richmond 4.2 6.3 7.9-51
North Melb. 2.7 6.11 14.13-97
Goals: Lynch 2, Mansell, Trezise, Rioli, Balta, Campbell.
Given who we are playing, this is the worst performance of the season. It's one thing to be outclassed by a top side but to be so unaccountable and outworked so meekly by another also-ran side is disgraceful.
-
Harry 20 hb 20kick 40 touches.
2 goals.
Embarrassing by the mids and coach
Edit - 42
-
Campbell goal.
57 - 97
-
Horrible horrible performance. Tyler young has gone back to his pre acl form. Not an afl player
-
That sums up our game. Slow play, high ball and the North forward takes the easy mark 10m out :facepalm. Our heads haven't been in the match.
-
Green goal.
63 - 104
That must be our first clean centre clearance since the middle of the first quarter. Even then the kick was terrible.
-
Harry Sheezel has the most disposals in a game by a North Melbourne player ever
-
Taranto is not right. Can't change direction. Never seen him go to ground as much as today. Worst game he has ever played.
-
Lynch goal.
69 - 122
-
Balta goal.
75 - 122

Scoreboard flattering us.

Brown needs a spell badly
-
Brown needs a spell badly
Still not sold on brown.
You’d wanna see some big improvement in him and many others over the offseason
-
Young has been disgraceful
-
Young has copped a bath today. If Faull wasn't injured, you'd send Balta back down back.
-
Really sick of watching this midfield group. If there aren’t major changes next year it will be hard to stay invested at all
-
Final Score
Richmond 4.2 6.3 7.9 13.9-87
North Melb. 2.7 6.11 14.13 20.15-135
Goals: Lynch 3, Campbell 3, Balta 2, Mansell, Trezise, Rioli, Green, McIntosh.
Just an embarrassing shameful display.
10 Norf players had as many disposals as our whole team. Sheezel 54, LDU 40, Parker 31. Talk about no accountability for an opponent.
-
54 and 40 lol
-
People won’t agree but Yze isn’t the answer. I think we saw his inability to reset at h/t against an ordinary side as clear evidence.
We will not start the properly build until they replace him.
-

But in other games we’ve come back from behind and won ? I think he’s shown plenty as a coach, we just need to get the list right which is the most long and painful process
-
I'm currently sitting in the QANTAS club at Hobart airport
What a pathetic, disgraceful, gutless and embarrassing display.
Worst performance of the year by a long way.
All the goodwill built up this season, a lot of it obliterated in 3 qtrs of footy
I don't want to hear it wasn't up to standard. I want to hear an apology to all members and supporters for embarrassing the Club and jumper today
-

But in other games we’ve come back from behind and won ? I think he’s shown plenty as a coach, we just need to get the list right which is the most long and painful process
How can you let a bloke get:
54 disposals
• 2 goals
• 7 marks
• 5 tackles
• 15 score involvements
• 6 clearances
• 8 inside 50s
• 186 AFL Fantasy
He is a good player but that's not acceptable and it's got to start with the coach
-
Feeble effort. Felt we lost this game at the selection table. Failure to bring in Gibcus showed a lack of courage.
-

100%
It’s one thing to let a player run wild when you are winning the game and they’re not really changing the result. But to get killed in midfield and do nothing about it is weak. I don’t know why he didn’t throw Ross onto him. He’s done it multiple times this season but just chose to lay down today????
-
So, the outcome of today is that we swapped pick 3 for pick 2 and pick 2 for pick 3.
-
Team Stats:
It was a record breaking day for North Melbourne, winning their fifth game of the season with their highest score of the season. Harry Sheezel equalled the AFL record for disposals with 54, while Paul Curtis kicked a career-best five goals.

Assuming Adelaide do the right thing
-
Me so sad BUT we have had 5 more wins than everyone predicted, we have a very young group, injuries and suspensions have made it difficult, I think we are going OK.
-

After getting obliterated out of the centre in that 2nd qtr we started the 3qtr with the exact same starting mids. Zero accountability for Sheezel. We can’t use youth as an excuse with Prestia, Taranto, Hopper and Nank vs Xerri, Wardlow, LDU and Mr 54.
Remember, he was schooled under Goodwin - a famous non changer.
A team with the experience we had today - more experienced than the Roos - turned up it’s toes far too easily.
A really disappointing day and while it doesn’t undo the good work of those 5 wins, it’s a real pattern that we give up when the going gets tough. That goes beyond youth.

So is it the players or the coach?
I’m not a fan of this midfield mix at all but it is what it is right now, Campbell isn’t a mid, Hotton is a kid and everyone else is injured. I fear it’ll still get worse before it gets better
-
Perhaps it’s a little of both but ultimately the coach has to find a way to get more when we are swimming against the tide. We were able to do it in round 1. Perhaps it is something Yze can develop as a relatively new senior coach but it’s a glaring issue that needs addressing.
-
Everyone seems to think our midfield is better than it actually is but I think it should be beaten moat games we play because we just don’t have the midfield depth. There is no chopping our mids out and no variety. When the likes of Taranto and Hopper get replaced by the likes of Sonsie and Dow at the centre bounce, we are stuffed.
We need to add three mids ASAP and another three to cover impending retirements.

We have Lalor, Smillie, McAuliffe and Hotton all to add to the depth, just gonna take time. Even more time with all these injuries
-
It's time to start adding a free agent or 2 this year.
We started with bachar and it's time now to start. A midfielder would be nice who isn't getting game time.
Imagine if we lost hopper and tt this year? Serpel and Yze would be dead men walking.
Need to get improving.

Bachar Houli Grigger 2011 versions didn't think the same.
Wouldn't hurt to wait a year, but I definitely want to see something coming through in that mid 20's range very soon.

If that Port bloke is interested in coming over I'd be keen

grigg and houli were 23 when they came in.
I wouldn't want to target players much older than that.
Would be disappointing to go down the darling/parker/Daniel type recruitments are this stage

I'd consider that for sure. He'd have at least 6-8 years of footy in him.

Butters is contracted for 2026 and i can't see Pirt trading him out.
FA end of next year and certainly is worth making a pitch to him for 2027. Though I can see Port offering him a monster deal to stay

grigg and houli were 23 when they came in.
I wouldn't want to target players much older than that.

Well I'd make an exception for butters.
Currently top15 player in the player ratings and would speed up the rebuild one would think.
Bit different from grigg and houli - 2011

Ditto Reid and NWM

I wouldn't pay that price for Butters tbh. Nor Messiah.

8 premiership players plus TT and JH and they serve up that slop .
Me thinks they’re already on their end of season trips .
Next week could be even more embarrassing.

NWM no longer an option.
" Nasiah Wanganeen-Milera has decided to stay at St Kilda. Understand the superstar Saint is set to sign a two-year extension and become the AFL’s first $2 million player. "

See for me at least it won't be as I'm expecting to lose. Geelong are like the Bulldogs, beat up on lowered teams (as they should)
Yesterday I was expecting to win. Based on the team we had there versus the team N0rt had out there I was expecting to win.
It was an embarrassing day for our Club

You've clearly cut and pasted the above quote from somewhere. Site rules are if you do that you must quote the source.
Suggest you do that pronto or it gets removed >:(

Only a two year deal

@tommorris32
"The playing group just erupted at Moorabbin having been told Nas is staying. It’s $2 million x 2 guaranteed money.
Adelaide’s offer was $1.5-1.7 x 4 (they were prepared to offer longer if needed). Port’s was 12 years at up to $2.5 million per season… As much as $30 million in total"

It's time to start adding a free agent or 2 this year.
We started with bachar and it's time now to start. A midfielder would be nice who isn't getting game time.
Imagine if we lost hopper and tt this year? Serpel and Yze would be dead men walking.
Need to get improving.
While understand your point Frankie. Personally I wouldn't be going after free agents this year
And TBBH I doubt we'd attract any anyway
My view is...
We go to the draft and being in more young talent to compliment what we've got. 2027 onwards we go after free agents.
Sh
The club should always be looking at FA as it doesn’t cost us any draft capital. Whether players actually want to come here in our current state is a seperate matter but it shouldn’t stop the club from making pitches.
I would steer clear of making any big trade plays for a couple years which cost us top end draft picks.

How much for SONSIE ::)

spot on. I would start now, though they have to still fill a need and i think surely there is a mid or ruck worth looking at?
we wouldn't want to lose Nank.
-
It is going to take awhile to build up midfield depth. We lost alot of depth last year. I am hoping Lalor and Josh can have a good run at it next year but unless we recruit a ready made midfielder in this draft I don't see things drastically changing.

AFL Report Card: Round 23

RICHMOND
An extremely disappointing afternoon for the Richmond faithful, particularly after what was a promising start to the game. The Tigers were thoroughly outplayed after quarter-time in a fixture they would’ve gone in thinking they were a real chance to come away with the four points. And to add injury to insult, star interceptor Nick Vlastuin’s year is done with a broken leg.
In the votes
Skipper Toby Nankervis battled all afternoon against one of the AFL’s top ruckmen in Tristan Xerri, finishing as Richmond’s highest-rated player with 21 disposals, five score involvements and five intercepts. Spearhead Tom Lynch looked sure to be the gamebreaker but was well-held from quarter-time onwards. He still finished with three goals and a team-high seven score involvements.
Room for improvement
The Tigers registered 20 fewer entries than the Kangaroos, telling the story of the dominance the hosts were able to impose after the visitors jumped out to an early lead. Staggeringly, Richmond allowed North Melbourne 431 disposals to its 297. For context, the Roos have averaged 357 disposals per game for the year. Adem Yze’s side did next to nothing to stop the Roos’ uncontested game, with the Kangas recording 113 (!) more uncontested possessions for the match. And perhaps worst of all, Yze’s coaching staff elected not to put a hard tag on Harry Sheezel, who virtually did as he pleased en route to an equal-best all-time 54 disposals. The Tigers allowed the Roos to post their best score (20.15) in six years.

"For me, that just becomes a bit embarrassing for the Richmond football club."
Hirdy & the panel were full of praise for Harry Sheezel – but perplexed at the Tigers' decision to not tag the young gun.

Richmond's decision not to tag Harry Sheezel in record-equalling performance labelled 'embarrassing'

There has been plenty of praise for Harry Sheezel after he equalled the AFL/ VFL record for the most disposals in a game, but some pundits have questioned the Tigers' "embarrassing" decision not to tag the young gun.
Sheezel led the Kangaroos to a 48-point win over the Tigers at Bellerive Oval on Sunday, equalling the all-time disposals record of 54. The record was first set by Tom Mitchell in 2018 while playing for the Hawks.
The mark also broke North Melbourne's previous possession record of 44.
With Richmond allowing Sheezel to run free, Essendon great James Hird criticised the team for not applying a tagger or run-with player.
"After he had 28 [disposals] in the first half and 26 in the second half for a total of 54, I think someone needs to go near him, or even just a tag at stoppages," he told Nine's Footy Furnace.
"Start on him around stoppages and around the ball, because for me, I think that becomes a bit embarrassing for the Richmond football club that someone is able to get that many possessions.
"Fifty-four shows that Richmond was going one way and North Melbourne was going the other way, and they were definitely not coming together."
Speaking post-match, Richmond coach Adam Yze defended the team's decision not to tag Sheezel.
"At half time I think [Sheezel] had 20-odd [disposals] and the game was in the balance," he told media.
"The third quarter, I didn't see that as being a big issue, especially early.
"He did go forward and kick a couple of goals, so Jack Ross went to him for a little bit.
"Obviously, he's good enough to just go and change positions...
"I think he ended up with 12 or 13 in the last quarter; we kicked six goals. So, you're always looking at those numbers, but he obviously had a great game, and he's a terrific kid."
Also finishing the match with two goals, Sheezel's performance highlighted his dual threat as both a high-possession player and a goal scorer when moved forward.
Geelong legend Jimmy Bartel argued that Richmond needed to send someone to Sheezel as a "teaching moment" despite the game being a dead rubber.
"I know he's going to be too good, and I think that's the point Yze was making, like we're just playing footy out there," he said.
"But it didn't really matter in the end if Richmond won or lost this game, because they own North Melbourne's pick."
With a pre-existing pick swap agreement in place between the two clubs, even if they were to swap positions on the ladder, Richmond would still get the pick that is higher in the draft order.
The Tigers also chose not to tag Nasiah Wanganeen-Milera in their game against St Kilda the week before, allowing the defender to tally 33 disposals.

Bachar Houli Grigger 2011 versions didn't think the same.
Wouldn't hurt to wait a year, but I definitely want to see something coming through in that mid 20's range very soon.
Frankie reckon at least two F/A, four nd picks and a spot for Campbell to the main list and and then look at Msd psd and psss drafts.
How hard would it be to take a state league player with more attributes for the top level than say Sonsie or Dow. Cut and cut hard giving ourselves the best chance to find one or two good upgrades on blokes who clearly are not going to take us anywhere.

It is easy to say cut and cut hard. Even easier to say let's got for 2 free agents, 4 draft picks, Campbell to the main list. Then you want to make sure there's spots for the pre-season draft, mid season draft and pre-season supplementary selection period
Buy how do you do it?
With your grand plan you are suggesting we delist contracted players, which comes at a cost to your salary cap.
And please don't suggest trading blokes out because I've no doubt the ones you suggest to get rid of are on your dud list. So who's going to trade for them?
