Title: Top 10 Richmond players
Post by: one-eyed on August 18, 2025, 08:20:02 PM
Interesting to see who would be added and who would be left out of this list if done now.

Flashback from almost 30 years ago:

Greg Hobbs names his Top 10 Richmond players from 1947-1996

Dusty cotch Jack and Richo are locks.

Rance would have to be too

So its 1975 - 2025. For me Roachy would be in as would be Bartlett. Do any of the others meet the criteria outside of flea.
Reckon obviously Dusty Cotch Richo and Jack would get a gig. four spots left for me.

I was born in 88 so my memories start in the mid 90's at best.

Dusty
Jack
Cotch
Rance
Richo
Floss

Shedda

Then I'd have to think a bit harder tbh.

Have to put grimesy in if Vlas is in too.

My top 2 would be

1 - Dusty

2 - Maurice Rioli Snr

I need more time for the rest

Ian steward and why doesn’t Jack Dwyer get a mention?

Jack Dyer retired in 49.
Seems a logical reason

Yep, that would explain it , I incorrectly thought it was later .

Hart
Bourke
Bartlett
Clay
Richo
Dusty
Cotch
Jack R
Roach
Flea

This was much harder than I thought!  I'm happy with the 10 but the order is all over the place ... there is much bias going on.  Trying to stop my childhood self from naming all his faves to my adult self wanting all the dynasty heroes is really tough!  By rights Dusty should be number 1 but I couldn't leave Royce or Francis out of the top 2.  Apologies to General Lee ... & the Ghost ...

Flea was a better player in a Big V jumper than as a Tiger. Cotchin yes a a capt no as a player.
Rance is the best key position defender we’ve had in my lifetime so he goes in. I don’t know him but you can’t knock Roy Wright and his 2 brownlows

Cotch sacrificed so much of his game from 2017 onwards for the good of the team to allow dusty to be dusty. Have a look at his Brownlow year, absolute weapon.

Agree rance has to be in there. He was the best defender in the comp for 5 years or so and definitely one of the best defenders of all time imo.

Comparing eras is so hard

Richo and Knights from their era

Dusty, Rance, Cotch, Jack in that order .. shame to leave the forgotten man Lids out .. people forget how good prime Lids was

Then the "oldies"

Royce Hart, Francis Bourke, Kevin Bartlett, Maurice Rioli

Ian Stewart only played 78 games for the club, but won a brownlow and premiership. Hard to leave him out.

Lids a good mention. Would probably take one of my last two spots.

Forgotten man indeed.

I think it’s a less of a case of forgotten how good he was and more a case of people resenting him for packing his bags and not sticking it out with the club even though in the end it helped us build the list for the dynasty.

Former for me, I think I forget him because he wasn't part of the dynasty and have never shaken off the feeling that his lack of leadership wasn't good for the club's culture.
