Richmond's AFLW side packed with big-name stars but winless after four rounds
By Marnie Vinall
ABC
9 Sept 2025
In short:
Richmond have lost their first four AFLW matches in the 2025 season, last week falling to a 37-point defeat against Melbourne.
The Tigers list contains big names such as Monique Conti, Ellie McKenzie, Katie Brennan, Caitlin Greiser and promising teenager Sierra Grieves.
What's next?
Richmond play Geelong at Princes Park on Sunday before taking on St Kilda at Moorabbin Oval.
Despite having some of the most talked-about names in the AFLW on their roster, Richmond currently sits in 17th place after losing their opening four matches of the season.
And those defeats have not been narrow ones.
The Tigers went down to Essendon by 15 points, the Western Bulldogs by 21 points and Sydney in the opening round by 20 points, with their heaviest defeat coming last weekend, a 37-point hammering by Melbourne.
This is despite a list containing the likes of league best and fairest Monique Conti, former number-one draft pick Ellie McKenzie, Katie Brennan, Caitlin Greiser and promising teenager Sierra Grieves.
They are now just one of two AFLW sides winless so far this season along with GWS, which finished 16th last year.
Given the brevity of the competition, a 0-4 start could mean its season is over before the side has really had a chance to click into gear.
But this is a team that made finals last year. So, what has happened?
What's going on?
AFLW analyst and commentator Gemma Bastiani says Richmond's biggest issue is not being able to convert forward 50 entries into goals, often due to poor decision-making and a lack of chemistry among their forwards.
This year, they are averaging two fewer goals per game than last, kicking an average of 26.8 points for, compared to 40.8 last season.
Despite getting the ball forward often, they are turning just 9.3 per cent of inside 50 entries into goals — down from 16.8 per cent last year.
"These numbers are reflective of really poor decision-making in the front half," Bastiani told ABC Sport.
"It's not about skill because we saw last year the players that they have in that forward line can kick big scores, can take control of games.
"But the way they're choosing to play is not allowing them to do that this year — and teams are defending them better".
In their round 2 loss against the Western Bulldogs, Richmond had zero marks inside 50.
They are also easier to score against this year, conceding 50 points per game vs 34.1 last season.
"So it's not like they've gone into a really defensive mode and that's meant that their scoring has dried up as well," Bastiani said.
"They're actually leaking nearly three goals more per game than they were last year.
"So not only are they converting poorly, they're then allowing it to go straight back up the other end and hurt them."
'A lot of talent'
Richmond are being figured out too easily by their opposition and they are not able to adapt in-game, which is a by-product, in part, of an over-reliance on a few senior players on the park.
"I think they are absolutely lacking depth, but not so much depth in talent. I think they have a lot of talent on the list. I think they're lacking depth in leadership," Bastiani said.
But that was, Bastiani said, also the nature of the young competition.
While the league is now 10 seasons old, a lot of players have only been in the system for two to four years.
"So yes, you can come in with all the talent in the world, but leadership, on-field game awareness, those sorts of things, you learn over time," Bastiani said, citing the experience on North Melbourne, Melbourne and Brisbane's lists.
"That means you have the players on the park that can actually see when you're in an awkward situation and change it.
"So Richmond on the weekend were really fascinating in that respect because at no point did they have the wherewithal to change what they were doing that wasn't working on their own, so they needed to go into a quarter-time huddle with direction from coaches because they didn't have the players on the park that could actually make those decisions for them."
Richmond have had no second-tier team for development or for fringe players to run through since they cut their VFLW program in 2021 and ended their VFLW alignment with Port Melbourne at the start of this year.
The Tigers' cause was not helped last weekend by the absence of captain Katie Brennan, who pulled up with knee soreness after their clash with Essendon.
So, season over?
It is a disappointing start for a side that made the finals last year, exiting in an elimination final to Port Adelaide.
The year before that, they finished 10th. In 2022 they played in their maiden finals after finishing fourth on the ladder but bowed out in straight sets.
Publicly, the word remains positive from a club point of view, with coach Ryan Ferguson saying after their fourth defeat of the year there were "a couple of things going on but we keep chipping away".
"Sometimes it can feel a little way off but it can click as well and sometimes [it's] not as far away as you think."
The short AFLW season, however, at 12 rounds this year, makes it hard for teams to make finals after poor starts.
Yet it is not impossible. Adelaide currently sits inside the top eight with two wins and two losses.
Richmond next play Geelong at their makeshift home of Princes Park on Sunday, before taking on St Kilda at Moorabbin Oval.

Agree with the majority of the above article
But can't help but laugh at another gem from the Coach, "a couple of things going on but we keep chipping away".
Just a "couple of things"? What a stupid statement. Clearly there's plenty blind Freddie can see it :banghead

That was our first F50 entry. It's been all Geelong so far without scoring.

Conti slammed head first into the turf in front of the ump and no free ::).

The tricky breeze is the only thing saving us so far. Cats have missed 3 shots from directly in front.

Geelong with the first goal. We have given them enough chances that they were eventually going to kick one.

LOL at handballing to the stationary ruckman surrounded by two defenders in50 rather than going for goal. Great gameplan coach :facepalm.

Lucky to be even this close. Geelong should be 4 goals up.

Fox commentator just then singled out Greiser (her former teammate at St Kilda) for not being physical and basically is saying Greiser hasn't learnt anything about key forward play from her Saints days.
-
McKinnon to Scott 45 out. Misses left.
4 - 31
-
Our "tackling technique" is full display again today :help. The difference between the teams is chalk and cheese. We can't stop the ball getting out when we tackle them (hello mistackles, one arm tackles or not pinning the arm) but they nail us every single time with the perfect tackle.
Another goal to the Cats..

Shevlin is another who is shadow of her former self this year. Confidence way down when you are dropping simple marks like that.
But all this starts with the useless clueless coach and those above in charge. They have destroyed our AFLW program.
Another Cats goal btw.

I refuse to watch
But surely what you describe would be on the players .. how on earth is that the coaches fault
I walked out at half-time and read this as I was walking back to my car.
I'll be honest Damo was first reaction was to post back that you constantly criticise the AFLW , you don't watch so what does it matter?
But you deserve better than pot-shots from the cheap seats.
So I'll give you my opinion.
It is on the coach because his game plan is so fundamental flawed that our players are running around like headless chooks.
Teams transition from D50 to FWD50 so easily because he refuses to have anyone defend the fat side of the ground.
Our forward structure is no existent. The majoirty of the time he has all our talls up the ground wh3n we transition and leaves one small in the FWD50 usually against 2 opposition defenders.
People pile on Greiser (rightly to a degree because she's horribly out of form) but today twice in the 2nd she bolted back to our FWD50 turned and made a lead forward and our mids are chipping it everyday but forward. That shambles is on him and his plan and structures
The incident that Mr OE posted about is onto the coach because of the set up. Ball should have been allowed to moved forward like it was because again we failed to pressure and/or guard any space. Further to that...
For reasons only he can explain he had McKenzie playing CHB bursting forward when we were transitioning but when we turned it over she was caught up the ground and therefore left 2 players trying to deal with a fast moving entry into the forward against 2 agile and fast opponents
Our players are clearly not fit enough. I am also staggered to see how big in the legs some of them have got this year which has caused them to lose any type of speed they had. Case in point is Shevlin. Think someone posted a shadow of the player she was, no surprise not only playing with zero confidence but lost all her zip.
Finally, for his game plan you need an abundance of skill. Our skill level has gone backwards. Again that is on him. We are team that has zero confidence and zero connection on the field.
After round 1 he said we'd improved. To put it bluntly we haven't we've gone backwards. Round 2 he potted the players and said they have the game plan and it's up to them to execute it. What we are seeing is a team that is for want of a better term; broken and that's in this case on the coach

Tigers downed by the Cats at IKON Park.
Richmond was outclassed by a slick and mobile Geelong outfit.

-------------------------------------------------------
Richmond suffered defeat to a strong and fast Cats side in their Round 5 clash at IKON Park, going down 8.11 (59) to 4.5 (29).
It was the Jackie Parry and Aishling Moloney show as Geelong landed its second win of the season, putting paid to Richmond by 30 points at Ikon Park.
Parry started the game like a house on fire, with seven marks in the first half, and ultimately finished with nine following a shift in opponent. Gab Seymour moved to quell Parry in the second half, but the Cat went on to finish with 17 disposals and two goals in a dominant performance.
Geelong ended up winning the disposal count 305-233, and notably the handball count 155-84.
The visitors moved with a real freedom and confidence and were willing to take on the Tigers and ask the question of their team defence.
Former No.1 draft pick Ellie McKenzie (27 disposals, 465 metres gained) tried everything, both at the contest and coming off half back, while star midfielder Monique Conti (26 disposals, seven tackles, one goal) did the work both defensively and offensively.
Two goals in the third term, by way of experienced duo Sarah Hosking and Conti, gave Richmond the breath of life. This was followed by Sierra Grieves' first career major, as the home side started to minimise Geelong's attacking run.
Unfortunately, it wasn't enough. Richmond's skill and decision-making often left it with broken chains of possession and plenty of opportunity for the Cats to pounce.
In just her second game, key defender Lexi Gregor proved why she was rated so highly by the Cats at last year's Telstra AFLW draft, holding her own against tough Tiger Paige Scott and bringing them down in a stunning tackle in the third quarter.
Up next Richmond will now head across town to face St Kilda at RSEA Park on Sunday afternoon.

stuffen joke. Our club is an embarrassment run by morons

It’s one of 2 things:-

ii) The women’s program simply isn’t a priority
Either way, it’s a worry.

I'm now of the belief it's the latter
But I also think re point 1, that they think the goodwill gained from 3 flags might means people won't question themq

Conti aside, I am not convinced our club takes AFLW seriously. Nothing about our side and set up seems remotely serious compared to other clubs.

She has also been handed a $100 fine for striking.

The AFLW program is symptomatic of just how useless and weak the leadership at our club is now. We are too woke now and can't make the tough decisions
