Brownies number 1's - I think I will stick with the OER consensus at the minute and say Troy Simmonds would be leading, pretty cluey bunch on here (well most).

Joel will allways be a danger and Tucky (as a dark horse) has been very consistant if unspectacular.

Simmo just ahead of Petts with Rainesy, Joel and possibly Richo making up the top 5.

Can someone tell me if the B&F takes into account finals games?
The real B&F, not the supporters' votes.

I reckon Simmonds is that far in front right now even if he didnt play another good game for the rest of the season he still would coast it in.
Outstanding performance so far.

No idea Moi but you would think it would include finals as a single club award. What happened in 2001? I can't remember. The voting system must have changed as Gas won with only 117 votes in 2001 yet Cogs in 2003 ended up with 325 votes  ???.

I don't think he can win it, but Polo might be the surprise 'bolter'.

Especially with another 7 games remaining.

Well done to Sugar.

I was initially shocked but looking back on it, Kane probably was our best player especially in the second half of the year.

Really led by example and showed many of the boys how it was done.

The thing that is hard to judge about B&F's is that it is the coaching staff that vote and they also know what they have asked the player to do in a certain game. So for us sitting up in the stands we make think someone hasnt contributed all that much in a game but it may be the total opposite to what Wallace and Co think if that player has taken another out of the game.

Great effort by Rainsey to get second.

Congrats and well done to Captain Sugar  :clapping  :cheers  :congrats.

Reckon Sugar came home with a rush in the second half of the year. Simmo jumper-punching Riewoldt   ::) and being suspended would have cost him votes.

Awesome effort by Raines to come 2nd.
Petts is improving nicely as a dangerous HF.
Another high finish from Joel to back up his 2 B&Fs.
Also congrats to Foley on winning the most improved and Polo best debutant  :clapping.
Well done Boys  :cheers.

It was a very good night - bloody good crowd they said around 700 :o

They honoured Chubba Kellaway, Staffy and Chaf

Chaf presented the Bill Cosgrove/Jenkins medal to Polo.

The Francis Bourke award is for the player deemed to have shown all the qualities we admired in Francis Bourke - courage, the 1 percenters etc - it's awarded by the coaches and was presented by St Francis himself

In the biggest shock of the evening - one Matthew Richardson won the Michael Roach medal for being the Clubs leading goal kicker :gobdrop ;D 11th time the big fella done it and sets a new record at the Club

More tomorrow - I am stuffed

PS: When I left one very very proud OERite (their boy had a sensational night and gave an excellent speech as runner up :clapping) - Moi was starring on the dance floor :thumbsup :thumbsup

I agree.

Previous points made about not knowing from the stands what the player has been asked to do are valid.

It is a negative decision by the club. He is a negative midfielder- he might have claimed a few decent scalps this year, but any old trier can tag in AFL football.
Do you ever see gun midfielders like Judd, Cooney etc worry about where their opponent is? No, because they create play, they don't negate it.

Johnson leads the way at Tigerland
Lyall Johnson
The Age
September 21, 2006

CAPPING off his second season as Richmond captain, Kane Johnson was last night awarded the Jack Dyer Medal as the Tigers' best and fairest, beating young star Andrew Raines by a mere three votes in an exciting count.

Johnson's win followed two runner-up finishes in 2003 and 2004 and denied Joel Bowden a hat-trick of wins. Bowden last night finished fourth behind Troy Simmonds, whom many thought had had a year good enough to earn him All-Australian honours as a ruckman.

Kayne Pettifer, who two years ago was struggling to find a spot in the side, was fifth — his best result.

Johnson's win came in a season where the skipper was assigned a different playing role, often running with the opposition's best midfielder. Yet while shutting down the likes of Chris Judd, Brett Kirk, Nick Dal Santo, Travis Johnstone and Simon Black, he also managed to average more than 17 disposals a game.

Raines, who came second in this year's AFL Rising Star award, played every game, collecting 397 disposals for the year at an average of 18 a game.

Dean Polo, who picked up 28 possessions and was awarded best-on-ground honours in his debut against Essendon, won Richmond's rising star award.

But amid the celebrations last night, there were black armbands to mark the death on Tuesday night of former premiership ruck rover and defender Terry Smith following a short battle with cancer.

Affectionately known as "Brutus" to his teammates, Smith was a low-key and humble man off the field but a tough, no-nonsense player who was a member of Richmond's 1980 premiership win over Collingwood.

Smith played 56 games for the Tigers in two stints split by 44 games with St Kilda, and was a member of the Victorian side in 1981.

2006 JACK DYER MEDAL: Kane Johnson 226, Andrew Raines 223, Troy Simmonds 215, Joel Bowden 204, Kayne Pettifer 186, Greg Tivendale 172, Matthew Richardson 164, Patrick Bowden 160, Dean Polo 152, Shane Tuck 151.

Leading goalkicker: Matthew Richardson (45).
Francis Bourke award: Andrew Raines.
Rising star: Dean Polo.
Most improved: Nathan Foley.
Best player at Coburg: Matthew White.
Most valuable person: Kane Johnson.
Fans' choice: Andrew Raines.

Skipper wins first Jack Dyer Medal
21 September 2006   Herald-Sun
Rebecca Williams

RICHMOND captain Kane Johnson held off a string of hot contenders to win his first best-and-fairest award for the Tigers last night.

Johnson polled 226 votes to claim the Jack Dyer Medal ahead of youngster Andrew Raines (223) and ruckman Troy Simmonds (215).

All-Australian defender Joel Bowden, who was aiming for a hat-trick of best-and-fairest wins, finished fourth on 204 votes.

After crossing from Adelaide, Johnson has twice been a runner-up in the Tigers' best-and-fairest in his first two years at the club in 2003-04.

Despite missing three games early in the season with a hamstring injury, Johnson was able to out-poll Raines, who played every game, and Simmonds and Bowden, who each only missed one.

The 28-year-old was rewarded for his consistency and ability to negate the opposition's best midfielder each week.

West Coast star Chris Judd, who was kept to 16 disposals in Round 3, Fremantle's Josh Carr (12 disposals in Round 10), St Kilda's Nick Dal Santo (nine touches in Round 17) and Brisbane Lion Simon Black (six kicks in Round 19) were among Johnson's scalps this season.

But Johnson did not surrender his ball-winning ability, averaging more than 17 disposals a game.

While Johnson walked away with the award, Raines, Simmonds and Bowden could all have easily laid claims to the best-and-fairest crown.

Raines, the son of Richmond great Geoff, was a revelation for the Tigers this season with his run and carry out of defence.

Simmonds enjoyed the best season of his eight-year AFL career, while Bowden won All-Australian selection for the second year running.

Correct decision the captain was outstanding throughout the course of the year. Wallace was very public in his support for Johnno. Bowden winning a 3rd would have been an injustice. Speaking about injustice Tucky finished 10th...diabolical...he was top 5 material for mine as was the Krak!

My major complaint was with the entre - and it is a major bug bear of mine at this type of functions (actually happended again today at luncheon I went too) - BLOODY SALMON - I hate Salmon but at things like this 98 times out of 100 for entre you get salmon. Why?? Not everyone eats it :banghead

I think I need to start a campaign for the banning of Salmon as an entre

I forgot to mention some positive news and that was that the President Gary March in his speech said that the Club was heading for a record profit in 2006.

He said we had a record year for sponsorship, membership and the 2nd highest crowds amongst the Vic teams and as a result we were heading for this record profit -  :clapping :clapping :clapping

If it is a record then I would think that our balance sheet will be back in the black - will still have a debt to service but the B/Sheet will be in the black

If you squint your eyes and concentrate really hard you can actually see who it is. Just like those magic eye puzzles.  :lol

Record profit = $700k doesn't it? :o

I think we made $650k in the late 90's (?). In any case great effort by the club  :clapping.

We had the 3rd highest crowds overall but more importantly the 2nd highest home crowds which equates to $$$ to the club. More reason for us to play our home games at the 'G Andy D  ::).

Steve Wright and the administration will turn RFC into a financial powerhouse no doubt about it. Everything thats been done in financial terms has been spot on since he took over from Campbell.

Just checked for sure at home. The actual highest was $918k in 1990 but that included the SOS money. 1999 holds the record profit of $687k.

they must have scored some big gate receipts or new sponsorship dollars at the end coz for a long time most of us thought we were gonna make about $350k

I wouldn't have a clue how much extra $$$ we made out of it but scoring a crowd of 35,000 against the Eagles would have been a much better crowd than expected IMO.

Had a look at the EOTT section where they go through all the B&F results and voting process.

For those who don't know the five members of the match committee cast their votes for each of the 22 players after each game. Each player receives from 0-5 votes (so the maximum a player can get is 25) where 5 votes are awarded for an outstanding performance, then 4 for an excellent game, etc... down to nothing if the player is beaten on the day.

Interesting that Cogs got 112 votes for roughly half a season. He wouldn't have been too far away from winning if he hadn't done his knee based on that. Lids, Hyde, Foley, Krak, Tambo and Razor finished in the top 20. Chubba came 14th with 114 votes out of interest.

Roach and Rodan only got 9 and 1 vote respectively. 36 players received votes in total. McGuane, Moore and Humm didn't receive any votes despite playing 1 or 2 AFL games.
