Eagles ruckman Gardiner in car crash
July 18, 2006 - 11:09AM
West Coast Eagles ruckman Michael Gardiner has been taken to hospital suffering minor injuries after his car hit a power pole and careered into two parked cars overnight.
Police say Gardiner was driving in the beach-side Perth suburb of Scarborough at about 11.30pm (WST) Monday, when the crash occurred.
Police questioned Gardiner at the scene, before being taken to hospital with minor injuries.
All three cars were damaged "extensively", police said.
"Mr Gardiner is helping police with their inquiries in relation to the crash," a police spokesman said.
"No charges have been laid at this stage."

Reports on SEN this afternoon are that the Eagles will continue to stand by Gardiner. He may be suffering from depression and the word is that he will only be out of the team for 2 weeks.
I would think he is a monty to get traded at the end of the season though.

6PR have apparently said he copped a $5,000 fine plus an indefinite suspension.

AFL star suspended over car crash
Herald-Sun breaking news
July 18, 2006 05:16pm
CONTROVERSIAL West Coast ruckman Michael Gardiner has been suspended indefinitely and fined $5000 by the AFL club after he admitted to drinking alcohol before crashing his car last night.
West Coast chief executive Trevor Nisbett said the Eagles match committee had recommended that the 27-year-old Gardiner be suspended following a long meeting today. "It is a decision not taken lightly and it is something that there was a lot of thought given to," said Nisbett.
"Mike has let a lot of people down, more importantly himself, because he was on track and things were going well for him.
"He informed us of the incident early this morning and we believe we have taken the appropriate action."
Nisbett said it was unlikely that Gardiner's playing contract, which is due to expire at the end of this season, would be renewed.
But he did say the club would work with Gardiner to counsel him for his ongoing problems, which Nisbett said included depression.
Gardiner is expected to be charged with drink-driving following the accident in the northern beachside suburb of Scarborough at 11.30pm (WST) last night.
Gardiner was taken to hospital with minor injuries after the crash, when his car struck a street sign and careered into two parked cars.
Gardiner's black Holden Commodore and one of the parked cars, a Holden Statesman, were extensively damaged and may have been written-off, police said.
The other vehicle was also damaged substantially.
Police questioned Gardiner at the scene of the crash and said he had been very cooperative.
He was breath-tested and his car was searched.
Gardiner had only forced his way back into the Eagles team three weeks ago after the club sent him back to WAFL club Claremont indefinitely in February for drinking alcohol the night before a practice match.
Second-placed West Coast's next AFL game is against Collingwood at Telstra Dome on Saturday.
Gardiner will be badly missed by the Eagles as their leading ruckman Dean Cox will not play for the next month as he recovers from a broken collarbone.

If he doesnt return to the weagles, some victorian club might take a punt on him in the pre season draft.Someone like sheedy would love a challenge to iron him out and get his head right.
-
He'd be safe over at Collingwood given their past record with TAC turning a blind eye. He and morrison could be the clubs designated drivers. :lol
-
Nice 3sum u reckon tiga...the ex weagles.... two micks and the chad! hehehe
-
SEN just said that gardiner has ben told that the eagles will not resign him next yr, he has been suspended indef, and will never play 4 the eagles again.

The Eagles have been far too lenient with both Gardiner and Cousins. About time they got rid of him.
How to stuff up a career in one easy lesson.
Short of reincarnating himself into Mother Teresa, we don't want him at Richmond.
Hate seeing ppl stuff up their lives, so I hope something good comes out of this for him.

:clapping Problem is the players think they are untouchable - look at Cousins he still hasn't taken responsibility for his mad dash earlier this year.

Exactly - give me Aker anyday ;D And I think everyone has a fair idea about my thoughts on recruiting Aker :thumbsup

I am a bit confused - the CEO of the Eagles said Gardiner is suffering from severe depression and has been treated for it in the past and then Karl Langdon said on 6PR that he'd spoken to Gardiner and that Gardiner told him that isn't suffering from depression and has never been treated for it ::) :-[ :-\
Does anyone over there have a clue about what's going on
Gardiner's a :wallywink :wallywink
-
yep
denial!!!

Just as long as Gardiner isn't coming to Tigerland I'll be happy. We don't need baggage from other clubs :shh.

Gardiner's not the only footballer in trouble for traffic offences:
Hawthorn footballer Mark Williams has been ordered to do a road trauma awareness course after pleading guilty to four driving charges, while former AFL player Corey McKernan has been fined for driving offences.
Williams, 23, was also ordered to donate $1500 to the court and not reoffend within the next 12 months.
Melbourne Magistrates Court heard that police found Williams was driving whilst unlicensed after a cyclist rode into the back of his car in Burnley on October 25 last year.
....
Corey McKernan was today fined $1000 for driving while disqualified and for using his mobile phone at the same time.
McKernan, 32, had lost his licence for six months for exceeding the prescribed alcohol limit last November, Melbourne Magistrates Court was told today.
